POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by KiKi27,

My surgery was very recent but I'm just curious about a few things. When I can finally start to consume actual meals about how much is it normal for me to eat for example, chicken wings (1 or 2?) Slices of pizza ? Pieces of sausage patties? Just so I can actually get a good visual of what it is my plates will soon look like.

  2. Started by achopp,

Hi, I'm 9 days out and having a problem that is starting to freak me out. Everything was going well until yesterday afternoon when the abdominal cramps after drinking began. Now every time I take a drink, weather it be Water or a Protein drink, when the liquid gets to my stomach I have these weird, painful, abdominal cramps that come in waves. I tried taking gas x strips, phillips milk of magnesia, and reglan but nothing has helped. Has anyone else had this? Could it be a leak? I'm not nauseated nor do I have a fever. thanks

  7. I've been having this constant hunger pain is this normal ??

  8. Started by rdy2Bsleeved,

So up until I have felt the restriction but today I got all my water in early, ate soup, protein shake, and more soup and I'm still hungry! I'm starting to freak out I ate like a cup of soup already

  9. Hey everyone, I'm asking this question because I feel like my sleeve can fit way more than the average patient at this stage. I'm 6 months post-op and at this point I can easily eat 6 ounces of food before feeling satisfied, not fully stuffed. If I overeat (which of course I'm definitely not making a regular habit of doing, I've just noticed this on a few occasions), then 7-8 ounces can leave me feeling fully stuffed. I feel like this is way too much compared to others who seem to only be able to handle a maximum of 4 ounces even several months post op. I don't know what bougie size my surgeon uses, but I'm wondering if I seem to have an abnormally large pouch or ma…

Anyone else not like half the things you liked before surgery? I'm extremely picky now and it's hard to find things I like anymore and some days I like it other days it tastes funny[emoji55]????

  11. Started by Keebie,

I have my 2-week post op appointment Thursday, and I've stepped on the scale a few times and kinda feel like I should've lost more. I'm supposed to be on strictly liquids, buuuuuuut [emoji849] I know I could've done better. I hope to hear good things on Thursday, but I know once I get back home that I'll make myself do better. Also!, I hope once I actually eat eat that I'm really restricted like most.

Hi everyone. My surgery went well and I passed all the tests, but I noticed a little numbness on top of my legs after the 2 hour drive home. Did anyone experience this? I feel fine but just wanted to check with all of you

  13. I only want to drink Water. I tried adding Isopure non-flavored whey Protein to some hot tea but it tasted horrible. I have no desire to eat anything, or drink anything but water. I've also just started my period today. Lovely. Please give me advice on how to structure my day to get in the 48-64 oz of Fluid and 40-60g of protein that I'm supposed to have the first week.

  14. Greetings! I had my RNY surgery on Tuesday, three days ago. Things went well and I came home from the hospital yesterday around noon. I did okay at drinking water, but when I attempted a protein drink (unflavored Isopure), it was exceedingly difficult to get down due to smell/taste. A few hours after that, I began getting a lot of rumbling and gurglings in my upper abdomen that I associate with hunger, and then an hour later the hunger began. This was not head hunger -- this was physical hunger. I didn't think I was supposed to feel hunger at all, and the panic began to build. The feeling continued all evening, getting stronger, and I ended up taking a Xanax jus…

Has anyone experienced hiccups all the time 1 week post-op? I have hiccups all the time and feeling full up to my throat all the time. I can hardly get 3 tablespoons of food down at a time.

  19. I'm almost 6 weeks post RNY and my weight loss has been extremely slow. My Surgeon has me at a goal of losing 6-7Kgs per Month so that I reach my goal weight in about 10 months. Since my last appointment with her which was 15 days back I have lost only 2Kgs. On top of that I read that weight loss slows down after 3 months and 6 months. I'm already slow if it slows down any further it will be virtually non-existent. This has put me into severe depression. I've been crying my eyes out . How will I reach my goal weight? Did anyone experience the same initially but they were still able to reach their goal weight within a year from surgery? I still have 47 Kgs to los…

Well, that magic number arrived today...you know that one you set, either officially or in your head -- the infamous goal weight! My surgeon never gave me a goal weight. I set one in my head of 160 pounds (I'm a 56-year-old, 5'6" woman). In a world where 130 pounds is the perfect weight, that still "sounded" high to me. And, after a little research, I realized that I had to get down to 155 to "officially" not be overweight anymore (according to the BMI charts) I was 159.4 this morning. That stupid 155 number is still in my head. But, in all honesty, nobody --including my doctors -- think that I need to lose any more weight. I'm very active. I eat 1200 c…

Hi all! I'm 10 days post RNY, and learned yesterday that I accidently tore a suture through coughing and/or sneezing. The pain is almost surreal at times. The surgeon advised to take a muscle relaxer, use a heating pad, and just rest as much as possible. Supposedly, the pain should subside in a couple weeks. He didn't seem overly concerned, and shared this is "normal." Has anyone else experienced this painful situation?

  22. I was banded on January 16, 2013. I have lost 130lbs and have been very overjoyed with my new body. I started having pain down the outside of my left calf about 6 weeks ago. It turned into a numb left foot and a condition called foot drop. I have read several different articles about how this can be inadvertently caused by the weight loss. Mainly because of the loss of cushion around the peroneal nerve and my terrible habit of constantly crossing my legs which can aggravate it. Anyone else had any experience with this? If so, did it go away and how long did it take? What was the course of treatment if any? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Melissa

Why oh why do I keep doing this. I just made home made pizza and ate it fast. Now I feel like I'm having a heart attack. The heart burn is so painful. I know it will subside but I must NEVER do that again. I have done it before and cried. But yet here I am again. Suck the lesson Learned. MIND OVER MATTER. I need to stop bringing back the old habits. Arggg Thanks Nancy

So I've been working really hard to get all my Water in, and most days I meet my goal, but....drinking so much water means I have to pee ALL THE TIME. Pre-surgery I drank a lot of liquid (not a ton of water though, mostly coffee, tea, or coke with some water mixed in) and it was never like this. Vets, does this get better as your body gets used to the water intake?

I am so proud to say that I am now 3 months post op. I ventured into this foreign land called the gastric sleeve on Dec 5, 2016. I was nervous yet ready to have a new beginning in life. A healthier life that was more fulfilling without illnesses and aches all the time. Well, this 3 months has been a true roller coaster but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I started my journey out at 242 lbs pre- op. On the day of my surgery I was down to 219 lbs with the help of my dietician( I was very serious about my dietician's recommendations on diet changes ). When I awoke from surgery, I was so confused and in so much pain . I immediately regretted surgery,, lol. But after a coup…

I have been going about every hour for the past several Hours. Is that normal? I feel like I always have to pee! Also, did anyone have crazy, what feels like pressure, on their bladder the day of surgery and into the next morning? I'm thinking it's gas, and am trying to walk around as much as I can. Last night my husband found out we have received orders to Okinawa, Japan - reporting in the end of July. Does anyone know if my having VSG just three weeks ago is going to prohibit going to Japan? I can't find any specific info on the EMFP website? I was a self pay for VSG. Any experience or knowledge about this would be helpful! Thank you in advance!

Hi all, well following on from my post yesterday about reaching the magic 100lb goal i also went to see my surgeon yesterday, after speaking to him he worked out some percentages and the sleeve alone will get you to lose 60% of your excess weight over the space of 12 / 18 month, i have gone further with a loss of about 65% in 6 months, he said that he doesnt think my loss will be much more now, my question is though at the mo i am having about 700 to 800 calories in a day and at the gym every evening with swimming straight after the gym 4 times a week aswell, now if i am still having the same amount of calories coupled with the same amount of activity how can the loss jus…
