Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by drydzynski,

When does sipping get easier?? I am about 72 hours out from surgery and in still having a ton of trouble sipping! I'm trying to shove as many liquids down my throat as I can but then my tummy gets angry! Im not calculating how many ounces im getting per day yet but im going go guess about 25-40 oz is all im managing. I've heard that it does get better. How long did it take to get easier for you? As a former gulper this is a big issue for me!!

I have to lose 25lbs before my surgeon will even schedule my surgery. I have an appt. with my Nut on Nov.13th and I want to hit my goal by then. Currently I'm 379lbs so I know weight can drop quick when you start out weighing this much. I would like those who went on two week til 30 day liquid diets how much weight was lost. I know some had two shakes a day and one meal and I would like to know much weight loss on those types of diets. My insurance changes at the end of the year and I've been on this journey since March. I don't want all of this to be for nothing. Any stats ya'll can give me will be greatly appreciated.

I was told to keep my diet low carb and low sugar. But I'm wondering what is low enough? At least at this stage (2 weeks post op) ? I'm finding some supplements online to replace having to drink a shake all the time, and some have 20 something, some have 12grams of carbs, some have 15, and some 2 or 3. How much is enough? How much is too much?

  5. Started by byjenna,

I'm 10 days pot- op. I've lost 15 lbs since surgery (early on...slow now)... 32 since pre-op diet. I am eating when I feel a need but really don't know if I'm getting enough or too much. I feel good (very sore) but I can tolerate everything without issue. Today I ate a sugar free hello, a fat free tapioca pudding, a cup of tea, water, a tiny bowl of egg drop soup, 1/2 an avocado and a few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt. I'm every other day with protein shakes because I hate them. Is this too much food, not enough... I'm not someone who is going to measure and track and calculate- I know that so why fool myself? I start to feel hungry so I eat a bit... am I going about this th…

My Dr. Said I could have low fat mayo, but I forgot to ask about a few other things...like: Mustard Ketchup (I know it's High sugar, but is it ok once in a while?) Tartar sauce Etc... Which condiments are we allowed to have? At least in moderation

Hey all. I am 4 days post op doing pretty good with my diet.. A quick question. My doc instructed me to have 10 days Clear liquids... can I have coffee with nestle creamer and splenda? Second question can I have fruit yogurt in my 10 day thick liquid phase? Many thanx

  8. I am paleo in orientation as this has been the best way to me to lose weight pre-surgery and seems pretty congruent with post-op eating as well. In paleo, fat is an important part of the diet, but all the post-op eating guidelines talk about low fat or fat free this or that. I am a week-and-a-half post-op and still on full liquids; pureed food starts in 5 days. No complications whatsoever with surgery. I've been consuming a lot of greek yogurt with added whey protein (low carb), with various sweet and savory flavorings. Lost 31 pounds pre-surgery; 9 pounds post-surgery. Weight loss plateauing x 4 days. Any advice?

Ok so I understand that week one post op is CLEAR liquid ONLY. 600 cals/ 60-90 grams Protein? Week two is full liquids? So we can now drink Protein shakes and thin puréed Soups and anything you can drink through a straw (but don't actually use a straw) right? Week three is puréed? So.... What? Like the consistency of baby food? Week four and five is where it gets very confusing in the paperwork they emailed me. Please tell me what you ate weeks four and five maybe even six... Thankyou so much ! :-)

So from what I understand, drinking while eating will result in making you eat more and more often... But if I'm just a few days/weeks out of surgery, isn't it ok that I would eat while drinking, which would cause me to eat more, which would allow me to finally get all my protein in? I'm really struggling to get my protein in, I haven't been able to get more than 30grams in a day... How do I do it?

Hi all!! I was just approved for surgery and was wondering from all the pro's what I should get NOW. Should I be taking anything before? There are so many to chose from! I don't do good with too many choices..lol. Also, What should I start doing as far shopping for things I will need after surgery and packing for the hospital? If you could give me any advice what would it be??? I am so ready for this mentally but I have NOTHING as far as vitamins and shakes yet and don't even know where to begin. Should get other things like sugar free pudding or anything else similar? ANY advice or things you learned along the way that might make my journey easier would be much appreciat…

Is so hard! I find myself getting back into old thoughts and habits when I was on a diet before. I'll eat something and feel guilty. I can eat 3 oz of chicken and an artichoke, and feel bad thinking I ate too much. I know I'm not eating a lot, but I feel like when I do eat (and I do try to eat only when I'm really hungry), the guilt kicks in and part of me wants to just not eat at all. Does anyone else struggle with this too?

This Wednesday I will be 4 weeks. I eat yogurt, the baked ricota dish, very small amounts of chicken, sf pudding/jello, cheese, pureed broccli soup and I can eat about 1/2 of a scrambled egg. Nothing goes down easy...but I understand this process is slow and things get easier with time. What did everyone else eat at 4 weeks out?

I am one week post op and in the full liquids phase. If I have one more protein shake or broth I might murder someone. I can't stomach the after taste anymore. Wednesday is my clear to start "soft" foods. I've already lost 20 pounds which is great but I just need something real!! Would I be a bad person if I had some Greek yogurt or applesauce? Hah.

What is important to focus on? I log my calories, fat and protein. I don't pay a lot of attention to sugar but I am not eating anything that I wouldn't feed my toddler (that's my rule to help stay away from junk food) Do I need to focus on sugar free rather than fat free? I guess I assumed that fattening food made me obese, so low fat and fat free were pretty important. Can someone explain why sugar and or carbs may be more important to focus on. veterans any input????

Do you count calories and Protein? Protein and carbs? All 3? I know that you need to follow what your NUT/surgeon says, but I'm curious what people have found that works for them. I sometimes feel overwhelmed counting everything, my nutritionist didn't really give me guidelines. My sample menu says 900 calories 60g of protein. My goal is always over 60g of protein and I avg closer to 70-80.

Hi there - I'm five weeks out from surgery and on soft foods since four weeks. Today for the first time I got a Chipotle bean bowl (no rice) and figured it would last me for a few meals. I got a mix of pinto and black Beans with cheese, guac on the side. I took 1/3 of a cup of the beans and some cheese and added 2 Tablespoons of plain nonfat Greek yogurt to boost the Protein. Are the beans okay to eat? I'm not even halfway through the 1/3 c I put in my dish, but all of a sudden I got nervous about the bean coverings. Are non-pureed/ non-mashed beans okay on a soft food diet? Thanks!

Hello everybody.. I was sleeved a little over a month ago in Mexico.. Didn't receive a very clear diet plan... Can anyone tell me when we are able to start eating nuts, seeds, berries and leafy greens? I am unable to stomach protein shakes, but before surgery, i made a shake containing all kinds of nutrients and some protein in my Nutri Bullet.. I'd appreciate any advice! Thank you!

  48. Started by goirish78,

Just curious if anyone else is eating paleo/primal since they've been sleeved? We were making a concerted effort to cut out all the processed stuff we could prior to my sleeve, and hope to continue following a primal plan as closely as we can.

Has anyone here heard of this type of eating plan before weightloss surgery? If so do u know of any websites with recipes?

  50. Started by Brighteyes,

I generally only eat home made soups. So I have a question. When we are told we can have cream based soups, what do they mean. Is it Campbell's Cream of something? Can I not just take homemade cream based soups and blend it? Thoughts?
