Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by Italiancurves,

I'm 7 weeks Til surgery. Self pay/ Mexico so I don't have a Nut or Doc to talk to. They sent me an e- file on suggested post op diet , but it's so vague. I hear people talking about chicken broth and Popsicles during the first couple days post op. I really don't like most chicken broths... Can I just drink Isopure? Does that count towards Water intake? Or do I need to drink 48 -64 oz water in addition to ISOPURE?

  2. Started by hoping2bskinny,

As anyone tried the hcg diet just to drop the required weight before surgery???

  3. Started by hope1106,

I'm supposed to be on clear liquid for a week and then all liquids for another week then pureed food for another week.. I was wondering, since I can't really drink much and I've only been on clear liquids for 4 days, what would happen if I start drinking yogurt 5 days post op? I've noticed some people were on clear liquids for a few days, I've done lots of research and it seems ok.. but I just wanted to get other opinions. Looking for ANY way to get more protein in.. thanks in advance!

    Started by Guest,

I have some plain greek yogurt the hubby bought (he is not allowed to shop alone again!) and I was thinking of mixing a little bit of honey in it to sweeten it... Is this an ok sweetner to use? I am just thinking sprinkling equal on it will not be good and I cant have fruit yet. Not sure what else to do with it. I am full liquids so I am still pretty limited but don't want to waste the yogurt. Any guidance would be good.

  5. Started by muneca1029,

Hey guys I had a really really bad day today my hubby loves sushi and so do I.. Well I've been really good at not giving in to temptations and actually feed my son with no problem but today my husband decided to buy sushi ( spicy crab rolls) I couldn't help it and gave in. But to be more exact it was wrapped with seaweed and it only had crab with avocado I'm on soft foods so I did chew really good and did not eat the seaweed either. My concern is wether wether anyone knows if its ok or not? Also I had 9 small rolls and it didn't bother me at all.. I don't want to put myself in jeopardy either.. If anyone knows please let me know thanks. I will call my nutritionist tomorro…

I get lots of questions regarding how to get back on track. This journey is tough, and one thing I've learned is that I'm not perfect - but if I'm going to move past that I have to figure out how to forgive myself. For me, the main factor in my obesity was my inability to overcome this. So I would give up and gain all my weight back, and even more. I cannot do this to myself!!! I have to pick myself back up and keep it moving. I didn't go through 2 torturous painful weight loss surgeries to just keep giving up. Heck no!!! So, along my Sleeve Journey, when I noticed I wasn't doing well and needed to get back on track this is what I did: The BASICS BOOTCAMP: Fo…

    Started by Guest,

I was sleeved 8/12/13. This was my first week off liquids and on to some soft foods. I'm a little frustrated because I've gained back 2 pounds. I keep telling myself it's ok because I've nearly doubled my caloric intake, but I'm still under 800 calories a day. Is this weight gain with "real food" a common occurrence?

  9. Started by Sleeved in Seattle,

I started pureed foods last night at week 4. The half cup of Fage went down well. Today's scrambled egg with 1/4 c of cottage cheese is sitting like a lead sinker. I got about half through and my nose started to run (my signal to stop) and I thought oh come on, surely more should fit. So I ate a bit more. Idjit. At least the dog got the last few bites, so *she's* happy! You'd think by age 50 that having to learn things the hard way wouldn't be necessary any more. But nooooo. Anyone having similar issues? Lisa

  10. Started by LeanerLena5426,

I am just over 7 weeks post-op, and I have no more restrictions on my diet. I have no difficulty eating, I can pretty much eat anything (though I'm still being really careful and haven't tried anything like raw veggies, steak, Pasta, etc.). Portions are small, I always stick to my surgeon's recommendations (without any effort, I get full). But I can consume a good 800-900 calories in a day without even trying (more, sometimes), and I've read a lot of people talking about 500-600 calories, or losing massive amounts of weight in a short period of time. Just wondering, should I be trying to restrict my calories? I'm torn, because on one hand I feel like going ultra-low…

My doctor said to drink water or low calorie drinks. I have been trying to find low calorie drinks and came across Powerade Zero. What do you think about it? I normally add no sugar drink mixes (propel or crystal light) to my water, but I am interested in the Powerade Zero because it has electrolytes. Also, I am getting tired of the same old grape propel water.

So just because I'm 6 days post op and bored to tears I've been looking anything and everything up on the iPad......I was just looking up nutritional value for Chinese food (past fav) and it seems to be very high in protein and if you order right not too bad with fat and calories......was wondering if someday I can eat Chinese again or is it a bad food? And how does it sit with the sleeve?

Any recommendations for restaurants that offer something I can eat during my soft food phase? I will be traveling in a couple of weeks and I know we will be stopping at some fast food restaurants on the way. Breakfast will be simple...egg with cheese, but what about the lunch menus? I've thought if I went to mexican restaurants, I could order refried Beans and grilled chicken (if it's soft enough to mash up.) Most other restaurants have Soups, so that wouldn't be a problem. I just need some ideas for the fast food places I guess. Btw...I am currently 6 days post op and my doctor's recommendations are 1-2 weeks full liquids (includes creamy soups, yogurt - no chunks…

Does anyone have some ideas about traveling shortly after the surgery? We will be flying from Houston to Boston staying in that area a week (NH, CT, MA) then flying home to Houston. I'm doing well on full liquids right now and will be in puree/soft foods stage by then. I know I'll take some protein powder, but after that I have no master plan! Has anyone had to travel while still on the post-op diet?

    Started by Guest,

My doctor has sent the request to insurance for authorization for my surgery! I had to do a 6 months medically supervised diet (and couldn't lose more than 10% of my weight or I wouldn't qualify...so I did not push myself to really lose.) My doctor wanted me to lose 13 lbs before my surgery and I have lost 9 lbs as of today. I had lost 11 lbs, but I gained 2 lbs back. Normally, I can drop 10 lbs fairly easy, and steadily lose 1 lb per week up until 30 lbs and that has always been my plateau that I could never get past. So, I thought 13 lbs pre-surgery would be no big deal...but for some reason I am not dropping it as fast as I once could. If I don't lose the extra 4…

Quick question. My doc has me doing a two week pre-op diet that partly requires protein shakes. For those in a similar situation were you allowed to mix fruits and yogurts in your pre-op protein shakes, or was that reserved for post-op? I am just a little confused.

Half an onion sliced thin 3 cloves garlic smashed 1in ginger sliced thin and julienned 5 Campari tomatoes 1/2 head cauliflower 3 c chicken stock 2 tablespoons pesto 1 lb frozen langoustine or lobster (see note below) Salt Pepper Sauté onions, garlic and ginger until browned (I used ghee, you can use fat of choice or spray w Pam). Hi! I am being sleeved on sept. 18th! Wondering how long it takes you to drink after surgery? Like an 8 ounce protein shake will take me how long to finish. I've been making them with 12 ounces of skim milk or 16oz. water. I'm thinking I should cut down the fluid amount to get used to the taste difference? Thanks !

  27. Ok....so this may seem like an insane question..but I really do need to know. So brief history, had band in 9/2011, lost 38 lbs. Too many issues, not enough weight lost after 1 year. Did band to sleeve revison Dec 2012 (also had hernia repair and spleen repair). I had Dr. Smith for my first sugery. And Dr. Tyner for my second. LOVE my second doc. He's very user friendly. While talking about the sleeve, he told me my meals would be limited to 5 bites (WHAT?) and I could eat up to 6 times. After mentally dealing with the 5 bites, I was excited to know I could eat more than 3 meals (sorry, but hated that about the lapband, was ALWAYS hungry). Well Tyner left my clinic …

Is anyone else having a hard time not drinking with meals? I start my pre-op diet in a week and this is the only thing that I am having problems with so far. Breads and sodas haven't been a problem so far, but not having water with lunch is incredibly hard to get past for some reason.

My surgeon was at two different hospitals with two different programs. One program required the Pre op diet to be clear liquids plus protein shakes and the other full liquids plus protein. I'd love to know which one you all found beneficial. I'm thinking of trying to do the clear, in my head it's seems like it would help detox better than the full liquid.

Do your protein shakes count toward your liquid consumption? I'm day-4 post-op and struggling to get 64 oz of fluid in plus 60 grams of protein.

I'm now one month post op and I'm cleared to eat just about anything! I really want to stick to my low carb/high Protein diet cause being 45 lbs down seems to be working for me (; but once I get to the grocery store I feel so overwhelmed. So I need a lot of help in that department! I live in a small town with just a Walmart and an HEB so if you shop there I would love to know some of your staple items that you buy every time you're at the store. Any suggestions would help! Thanks in advance!

  33. OMG my husband just made the best chicken bratwurst from scratch! If you can't tolerate pork or can't eat it for religious reasons, here's one to try. Made from The Mixer Bible, mine is a simplified version with no casing, no second grinding etc. Ingredient 2.5 lbs of boneless chicken thighs ground fine at home, or make it easy on yourself and ask the butcher to grind it very fine for you 1/2 c half n half or milk (see note)sp 2.5 tsp Salt 1 tsp ground caraway seeds 1/2 tsp ground pepper 1/2 tsp ground allspice Pinch ground nutmeg Method 1. My husband and I are going to Hawaii in October. We have never been there before. I was sleeved Aug 15th, I will be about 8 weeks post op then. I am still on soft foods, having trouble getting my water and protein minimums. I am very nervous about being a "downer" when it comes to eating and drinking (alcohol). Really want to have a great time. Plan on hiking, visiting memorial, shopping and of course the beach. We will be going to Oahu. Any recommendations on local food choices or just how to survive and still have fun would be appreciated! Thank you. HW: 276 SW: 257 cw: 241

I'm supposed to go on a 7 day clear liquid diet pre surgery. What is included in that? I've heard broth, water, and jello. I don't drink broth, so I wouldn't know if I would like that. I work in a restaurant and am wondering how easy it is to do a pre diet like this and wait tables. If anyone has recommendations as to what to have in those 7 days and not get grumpy at customers, I would love feedback!

I was wondering if some recent post-ops and veterans could give some input here. I was told last night by my WL center that post-op, fruits should be peeled and veg must be roasted, boiled, sauteed, etc to make soft. I can certainly understand this for when the solid food phase is intro'd and even a few months out after that. But is this common practice forever when sleeved? Is this advice so that skins or crunchy veggies do not get stuck or remain undigested? Is it because of the "chew" factor, that some people won't break down material good enough while chewing? Having to do this makes me hesitant on the surgery, because I love fresh fruit and veg (carrots, apples…

I saw my surgeon today and mentioned that yesterday (first day of purees) I had cottage cheese. She winced a little and I said, "But it was on the nutritionist's list!" Surgeon said I know, I know, I just prefer the purees to be thinner. I had made an egg salad with one tablespoon of low-fat Hellmann's mayo and 2 tablespoons of nonfat Greek yogurt but now I'm worried it's not thin enough. What can I use to thin it out in the Vitamix? Water seems do-able but not very appetizing, and I don't really want a super-strong yogurt tang, but I also don't want to add more mayo. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I know lower BMI folks lose slower than most but I have only lost 14 pounds and have not lost anything for over 2 weeks. I was eating 900 calories and now am going down to 700.
