Has anyone went from a sleeve to bypass? Need info asap

Any help will do. Did anyone have sleeve and went to bypass? What were the reasons? Were you happy of the decision? How long recovery?

I had a sleeve 6 years ago. I m at a good weight but have issue with food sticking where the staples were(“like a kink)

The doctor has recommended sleeve so my food doesn’t get stuck and food goes directly down. However I am nervous as hell. Not sure I want to go down that road again. However my reflux is severe.

Getting two more opinions but wanted to come here to see if anyone was similar to me?

What’s a mini bypass?

Mini Gastric Bypass:

  • Simpler and Faster:

The procedure involves creating a small stomach pouch and connecting it to the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the digestive tract.

Personally, it was severe reflux/GERD.. and also I developed Barrett’s esophagus from that and some weight regain.. so my surgeon suggested bypass vs the other procedures since I was sleeved already (10yrs ago as of 09/04/25)

I guess we are in the same spot. I actually wasn’t expecting this whirlwind in the last 4 weeks. I just thought I needed hiatal hernia surgery. So now I am getting second and third opinion. I think it just putting life on hold because I wasn’t expecting this and I have a vac planned at the end of October that I can’t reschedule. Sorry this is long winded just don’t have any one to really talk to about this

I had the sleeve done almost 10yrs ago and I’ll be getting bypass 09/05/2025.

I have a hiatal hernia to

I had sleeve surgery in 02/2013 with hiatial hernia repair for reflux. Two years ago I had gastric bypass and hiatial hernia repair to stop the severe reflux that has cause permanent airways damage.

My second surgeon and pulmonolgist worked together to get the bypass approved through insurance. Took about 6 months. Through alot of conversations, my history of reflux should have made me ineligible for the sleeve procedure originally as the reflux can be a side effect.

My airway was the size of a soda straw and it was causing heart and lung issues. I have no regrets for doing the bypass. Still have occassiional encounters from folks who are not in our shoes think.... "oh it's the easy was out" insert eye roll.

Over the years i have had to work on my diet and "fat kid brain" to take off regain. The bypass did help with taking off that last bit I could not shake. BUT I still have to follow the rules. Most importantly for me I no longer take multiple RX reflux meds or eat bottles of tums... although I have permanent airway damage that has to be rechecked and stretched back out every few years, I no longer suffer heartburn or wake up with acid and stomach contents coming up onto my sinuses. ZERO REGRETS other than not knowing at the time that reflux was a known complication of the sleeve.

Recovery went pretty quick. Standard can't lift for a certain number of days/weeks and the liquid to puree to soft food routine. Having been through it once before it was not as tough with the bypass.

Two years ago, I found myself in one of the most difficult periods of my life. I was struggling with severe acid reflux-gastric acid would rise up, especially at night, making it nearly impossible to sleep or eat without discomfort. Over time, the condition worsened. The constant irritation led to the development of a hernia in my esophagus, and things quickly spiraled out of control.

It got to the point where anything I ate would come right back up. I was vomiting frequently, and even more frightening, I often couldn’t catch my breath. The physical toll was exhausting, but the emotional strain was just as heavy. I felt helpless, scared, and unsure of what to do next.

I finally spoke to my doctor, desperate for answers. After a thorough evaluation, he explained that what I was experiencing was a known complication associated with the gastric sleeve procedure I had previously undergone. He told me that in some cases, patients develop severe reflux and related issues that can only be resolved through a revision surgery.

He recommended bariatric surgery to correct the problem. At first, I was hesitant. Surgery is never an easy decision, and I had already been through so much. But the pain and disruption to my daily life were unbearable. I knew I had to take action.

I had the surgery two years ago—and I can honestly say it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Since then, my symptoms have completely resolved. I can eat without fear, sleep through the night, and breathe freely. My quality of life has improved in ways I never imagined. I feel stronger, healthier, and more in control of my body.

That said, I can’t eat everything I used to, and I can only manage small portions, but honestly, that’s a blessing. It’s helped me maintain a healthy weight, and I’m no longer gaining like I used to. It’s a small adjustment for such a big improvement.

If you’re struggling with similar issues, know that you’re not alone. Talk to your doctor, ask questions, and explore your options. Sometimes the path to healing requires courage—but it’s worth every step.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had sleeve to bypass revision due to weight regain and other reasons. Best decision ever. Recovery was more difficult with the bypass but I was back to work in 2 weeks. The results have been significant vs the sleeve and I am so glad I made the choice to have the revision
