Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by Healthiernewme,

So, this morning I grabbed an almond croissant with the full intention of eating half of it. (TMI: I am seriously PMSing and was craving stuff (not to mention I was also really hungry).) I went back to my desk and stared at the delicious pastry; then, I proceeded to wrap it in a napkin, squish it, then throw it in the trash. Yay for me!

Just started my full liquid phase today. Anyone else in this stage? My nutritionist said cream based soup is okay but it notes it should be 98% fat free and made with skim milk. I'm having a tough time finding one that meets those requirements. Anyone else have any ideas of things they ate during this stage that was acceptable. So far pudding and yogurt have been My nutrition for the day. I'm going to try a protein shake this afternoon.

  5. so i'm on day 4 of the preop liquid diet, (3 shakes, 3 servings of dairy, and 1 cup of veggies) is all my surgeon allows and I'm struggling but doing ok. Broth really helps me. However today I got a call from the hospital and the doctor wants me to go in for more labs. I have to go in on thursday, and this means 8 hours of fasting completely just water. I wanted to say to the lady are you f**ing kidding me. I didn't though, I just said ok. Maybe it's the lack of food and the adjustment but i just wnat to cry. I'm sorry for venting. :-(

Egg drop soup...how many of you had it during your 3-week post op diet? I worry that the eggs don't qualify for the liquid diet. I know they're super soft, but can they hurt me? I placed a call to my Doc's office since I'm not starting the "soft" portion of the diet until Tuesday (commmmmmmme ON Tuesday!) but today I'm REALLY struggling with wanting something more than my chicken/beef broth, runny cream of chicken soup and protein shakes!Doctors office closes at noon on Friday's so I don't know if I will hear back or not. Any advice is appreciated. Don't want to do anything to hurt my sleeve and my recovery, but if Egg drop soup is "safe" I'm going for it!

Hello experts! I'm post op day 3 and having trouble with liquids going down. My throat feels tight like there's a pill stuck in there. Of course have not swallowed anything solid. My sleeve cramps when I drink liquids and I feel slightly nauseated. Is this normal?

  10. I have been reading up on some foods for post op, I am still on liquids till next week then mushy. But was thinking about trying this when I can get to the crunch phase. I see these dry roasted and then I have seen you can eat them steamed. Wanted some opinions. They are high in protein.

Yummo! A few weeks of near (think liquids) will do that to ya! What was your first soft food...how did it go??!

I know we are not supposed to drink carbonated drinks, I've heard it hurts like crazy... I'm wondering if I could get a caffiene free diet soda and open it and let it sit til it's flat and then drink it? Pretty sad, huh? Lol.... I'm 6 wks post op and doing great, just so bored with my powerade zero, skim milk, and every flavoring for water that's made! Lol

I am 11 weeks out , sleeved on 5/29 - I am so lost right now as to what I can and can't eat or what I should or shouldn't be eating . I have ZERO appetite , the smell of food makes me feel hungry but when it comes down to it I just can't eat , it makes me gag . Yesterday my diet consisted of a cheese stick and some fruit cocktail in lite juice . My protien shakes make me sick & my vitamins make me sick . I am drinking lots of water and green tea , but my finger tips feel funny and are all wrinkly looking , my fiance says it means I am dehydrated . I called my surgeon he pretty much told me my surgery is over and I have healed nicely that his job is done unless it's a …

When I am home, I track everything -Protein, fat, carbs, sugar, Fiber, and calories. I have a hard time losing weight (go up & down the same .5 - 1lb) But when I go visit my parents for a week, I don't track anything, eat everything, and come home 6 pounds lighter! How does that work? I admit, I don't really cook, and at home I use shakes and Protein Bars for a lot of my protein. At Mom & Dad's this week, I ate rice, bread, grits, even a whole piece of lemon ice box pie! But meals were things like crab, shrimp, lamb, beef filet, a bunch of pork (we were in North Carolina, home of pulled pork!) and even chili dogs. Is the difference real food vs fake foo…

I started my soft diet on Monday. Yeah. 4 wks on liquids is long enuf. The list my dr gave me includes: canned fruits, canned veggies, deli lunchmeat, cheeses, refried Beans, chili, tuna egg and canned chicken salad, and even melba toast (that's a shocker) Just curious if any of these went down easier than others. What did u have problems with. While imk eager to progress to soft food, Im so cared of popping my staple line with too hard of foods on my stomach. Suggestions?

I just passed 5 weeks post op. I am still having a problem getting enough water in every day. I don't dislike water (so flavor doesn't matter), but I have never been a big water drinker. I am having a hard time remembering to drink enough. I have tried all kinds of water bottles and drink cups with lids and some with straws. I know some doctors warn not to use a straw, but it doesn't seem to make a difference to me if I use one or not. I have one water bottle that has a counter so you can keep track of how many cups (or bottles) you drink. It holds 20 oz of water. I like it, but it is a little big to carry around all the time, so I just bought a little kid's drink bottle …

Just curious: after surgery are you eating according to hunger or schedule?

  26. Okay, so I am required to attend a dinner at a local steak and seafood place Friday evening and I'm still on a soft food diet. I'd hoped to find a basic grilled fish on the menu. No such luck, of course. The choices I'm considering are as follows: 1 - crab cake appetizer (I'm guessing not the wisest choice, due mostly to the breadcrumbs that are sure to be crispy, though it might be okay if I choose really well.) 2 - clam chowder - sometimes has fairly tough clams, and I don't want to spend 1/2 the night spitting out the bits that don't chew down well enough. Also, I'd end up with more potato, cream, and flour than Protein... 3 - Broiled prawns - should be tender enou…

I had my 6 mo post-op visit yesterday. I've lost 64 lbs. The doctor said I should have lost more and asked me about my diet. I eat eggs, cheese, microwave lite popcorn, fresh fruit, yogurt, Peanut Butter on apple. I think I'm eating well. That's the whole idea. He said I am eating "way" too many carbs and wants me to cut down to 15 carbs per day. I can do that but when I eat primarily Protein I cannot go number 2 and get so backed up that I'm miserable and end up having to take a load of laxatives once a week to get it all out. That can't be healthy? I hope that's not TMI. LOL. So how many carbs are you eating a day and are you still losing. At 6 months out I'm losing abo…

this is not about a new egg salad recipe, but that i just graduated to eating egg salad and it was better than ever and i enjoyed every bit of the tiny portion i could have. i have figured out that despite the perceived slowness of my eating i am still going much too fast and the sleeve is protesting so i am timing my tiny bites. tuna salad is next! then perhaps chicken salad. Does anyone eat peanut butter in the pureed stage? i am tempted but it is so thick that i am not sure. i thought of warming it up so it would be a bit runnier.

My office is having a working lunch today at a Chinese restaurant. I’m almost 5 weeks out from my VSG and trying desperately to figure out what I can eat there. (My doctor's plan allows me to try everything except raw veggies at this point.) All my Chinese favorites (except the luscious green beans) are fried, so I haven’t paid a lot of attention to what else is on the menu. By the way, I’ve eaten beef, chicken, and pork with no problems—in fact, nothing I’ve tried has bothered me at all. I know I can look over the buffet and see what looks like plain chicken, etc., and get that and steamed veggies. But I'd prefer to order from the menu so I can take the leftovers h…

OK, was having a Great day at the Mall of America with the kids….Took them to the 3rd floor for Lunch. I needed something to eat too. I knew I should have just drank a low fat chocolate milk, but had a HUGE craving for Hush-Puppies from Long John Silvers, and I gave in. I am almost 7 months post op, I should be good. I ordered 6, ate 2.. JUST 2, ONLY 2 and was SO sick, stomach cramping, palms sweating, and then had to RUN to the bathroom….Needless to say I WILL not be eating Hush-Puppies for a LONG time.. What foods do this to you, so I can have some idea of what to stay away from???
