Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

Hi. So I'm nearing the end of my full liquid stage and i've developed a strong aversion to protien shakes which of course means my protein needs aren't being met. I've been eating some soft foods (and honestly some that are more like normal food) to get my protein and I fell a little bad about not following the diet stages precisely. But I haven't had any problems with any of the foods I've been eating, even the regular ones. I guess I just wanted some opinions on this because I hate not "following the rules" but on the other hand I need to get the protien somehow. Thoughts?

I am a year out from my sleeve and have not lost as much as the doctor has wanted me too. Only lost about 55 lbs. I have had a hard time finding a diet that gives specific things I can and can't eat. I was hoping someone knew of a plan like that. I don't do well with vague things like eat more veggies and less carbs. A diet with actual foods like eat 4 oz of grilled chicken with 4 oz of carrots is more what I was looking for. Is there anything out there like that?

Just did weigh in down 47 to 244 nutritionist is so wrong using government fat ideas low carbohydrates work and since surgery no craving for sugar. I'm doing 150 grams Protein a day she told me 90 but my exercise routine is intense. Others with sleeve same day as me in stalls it's those carbs they're the enemy but people get money from the government so they adhere to what progressives think is best. This is 6 weeks since surgery and Low Carb is working well. last week at Doctor i was 5 LBS more and Nut told me that I was going to slow because protein is calories. THATS BS AND THEY STILL BELIEVE THAT LOW FAT MYTH OF WAY LESS CALORIES! Not true Sweden knows and it is junk …

  4. I recently tried some low carb/high Protein breads from netrition.com. Today I had half of a sesame bagel from Mirico. They make other bread products, too. You can also get it on Amazon. Fiber that offsets the carbs, as well. Anyway, thought I would share. I've been missing bread. Anyone else have similar stuff to share?

I'm about 6 weeks postop and on the final food plan. I get to have "real food"! lol However, I was wondering about spicy food--does anyone eat spicy food? Such as Indian food or Mexican or some hot sauce or chili. I've got a hankerin for chicken tikka masala! But, only if it's ok.

Hello. I am 5 days post - op. I was surprised to see Tomato Soup as one of the food options. Does anyone know what other types of soup would be considered whatever is acceptable for post op. I was under the impression clear liquids would be broth only. If tomato soup made with lactaid milk is ok I'm wondering what else is. Also can protein powder be put in the soup? I'm currently only getting approx 300 calories a day and only 30 protein so I'm trying to find ways to add it. I put it in sugar free pudding and it was fine. Last question is. I was using Muscle Milk powder but I'm almost out of it. What is everyone's favorite or best choice for protein. Thank you :-)

5 weeks out and down 39 lbs. I tried a veggie burger yesterday and a turkey burger today. Could no get through the recommended amount. Had to stop eating and walk around for a while and burp...I felt terrible! Has this happened to anyone? I am thinking that they may have been too dry? Any thoughts?

  9. Started by Robin Lanzoni,

I am an ovo-lacto vegetarian (no meat but will eat dairy products and eggs). In the last two years I've even been a raw vegan - a fantastic healthy diet but not socially easy or viable for very long (no meat, dairy, eggs or any cooked foods... just raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds). I was wondering if there are any other vegetarians here and if the information you received was different since you could not eat meat, fish or poultry? Robin

  11. Me and my pouch are hitting the open skies! It's our first trip together, and includes 4 10hr flights (2 there and 2 back). I'm 6 months out, so not completely new, but the thought of having such limited options for food/water for such a long period of time make me nervous. Does anyone who has travelled post-op either domestically or internationally have some advice they would be willing to share? -How did you manage getting enough Water in while flying? (those cups they give you are tiny!) -Did/were you able to bring Protein bars or beef Jerky or anything like that? -Did you need a letter from your surgeon/doctor for anything? Also, I'm going to be in India for 3…

I got a lap band over a year ago and find that my body tells me when enough is enough with both my band and my digestive system. I was reading the recent addition of Men's Health (March 2014) and came across this great snippet of information. It's explains, maybe, why I've become more sensitive. It's so good I had to share! The 30 Percent Solution If your weight is trending upward, consider this: Australian research shows that cutting calories by nearly a third primes your body for easier weight loss. Obese men who did that increased their production of satiety hormone, and their small intestines became more sensitive to recognizing food, all of which makes it easi…

I'm nearly six weeks post-op and would really like a vehicle for all this egg/tuna/salmon salad and hummus. My meal plan says nothing about crackers except for unsalted Saltines weeks 5 & 6. I'm skeptical about Saltines because I used to binge on them and haven't had refined flour for almost two months now. When were you able to successfully incorporate crackers and what kinds worked better with the sleeve early on? Do you know of any sleeve-friendly crackers/bread substitutes (I can't have raw veggies yet)? I'm not concerned about grams of carbs, just the risk of awakening the refined carb monster, and the pain that comes with pointy foods. Thank you!

I expected to feel like I was starving but after drinking the Protein shakes, I really didn't want to eat..even when I was offered delicious food. Nobody can throw down on some boneless chicken breasts like me but when I tried to eat it, I felt nauseous like someone offered me a dead mouse. I find this strange but who knows, maybe I can manage to get through the next 3 weeks without cheating. anyone else felt like this? also, how was the first day of your diet?

So not complaining, but haven't lost in two weeks, and think I hit my first stall. I had surgery in Mexico so haven't had the luxury of a NUT. I checked into it but didn't see the point of paying $300 when I've been pretty successful on my own (to this point). I've been at 800 calories for several months and 60-80g of protein a day. I'm debating if I need to increase my calories or protein? For those of you around 6 months like me, what's your calorie/protein intake?

I'm almost 6 months out from surgery and haven't felt like that in months! I felt like the surgery was last week again! Am 31/2 weeks post op and have been in soft foods for 3 days. Went out to eat! Ordered white fish with citrus salsa (hold the salsa). Ditched the rice in exchange for plain baked potato and steamed veggies. Eyeballed about an ounce of the fish, tablespoon or so of potato which I mashed. And set the rest to the side.I skipped the veggies as they weren't properly overcooked ( most restaurants wouldn't WANT to do that). It was really good. I ate slow and I'm so happy it all agreed with me. Even better..I could have continued eating and probably would have been within plan to have a little but more but didn't want to push my luck. Hi All! :} I'm just curious if anyone else out there is doing regular bodybuilding/weight lifting, because I have recently started in the hopes that I could break this stall/plateau. BUT...it's not working. I'm not sure if I'm eating too much, too little, the wrong stuff... NO ONE in the traditional bodybuilding/personal training world can help me. They want me to eat like 2200 calories, but I am only 9 months out & still struggle to get 600-700 CLEAN calories in. 35. I am 3 weeks post op and on day 2 of soft or what I call real foods. Started yesterday with 1 oz tuna with a little reduced fat mayo. I had to use a tsp for consistency and even then it found it dry. Probably doesn't help that my mouth has been very very dry despite all the liquids. So this morning...giving Morningstar veggie sausage patty a go. Starting with a half. The good news is that I like it even though I disliked them a lot pre surgery. The odd thing is that I am finding them spicy. And these are the regular ones, not special flavor or spicy. I suspect heartburn might result. 36. I feel like I'm on a really strict diet....I still can't hold down meats - deli chicken with mayo, tiny pieces of steak in Soup, I regurgitate all meats. I try to avoid carbs like bread, but I had 3 tiny pizza rolls (you know those tiny things you cook in the oven) and they tasted so good, but I know I shouldn't be eating them so not having them again. I haven't tried eggs yet but to be honest the thought makes me gag. I am tired of Soups, burrito fillings, Protein shakes, cottage cheese, hummus... Any new ideas for 5 week post opers?????

Anyhow while at the market to purchase more Jello pudding i saw something called rice pudding. It's 90 calories and has 5 grams of sugar per serving (which is about a 4oz cup). I'm wondering if it's okay to eat that at this stage? My full liquid plan says i can have pudding but no Soup with chunks. I assume rice pudding has chunks, so i'm thinking it's a no.
