A lot of WLS patients find their tastes change after WLS. Sometimes it’s too bad, like not liking healthy foods like chicken or salad anymore. Sometimes it’s a good thing, like when you don’t like greasy foods anymore. Sometimes it’s a direct result of surgery, like being intolerant to super sweet foods after gastric bypass or not liking the taste of Water anymore after the sleeve. Sometimes it’s the result of getting used to a new set of foods that you first FORCE yourself to eat, and later actually enjoy more than the junk food you used to eat. Like many lap-band patients, I didn’t notice any immediate changes in my tastes post-op, but my tastes have definitely chan…

Okay so, you may have seen the post i made about the Protein mug cake. If you haven't I will enlighten you. ( i promise to minimize the enlightening as much as possible..) I use Syntrax products for my protein supplements. Well every day for lunch i normally have a Protein shake. But now that its cold ( dang im freezing lol) and id love something not cold, So i came across an idea on the net and ran with it. And boy do i love it. You take a scoop of your favorite Protein powder, ( i use syntrax matrix Cookies and creme and syntrax nectars Cappuccino and syntrax nectars chocolate) so 1 scoop of the powder, 1/8 teaspoon of baking powder and add non dairy creamer unti…

Late last night while studying I craved the salty, crispy yumminess that only comes from a potato chip. I haven't had a potato chip in about a year and before surgery was eat Pop chips, Veggie Sticks, Pork Skins, Pirate's Booty. Ya know Snacks that you convince yourself are not as bad as eating a handful of Lay's. I have a few different recipes that would satisfy this need PLUS be low-carb, WLS friendly and give me some Protein. I also had a couple of zucchinis in the fridge that needed used, so I Googled, then Pinterested and found this recipe: Parmesan cheese Crisps Laced with Zucchini & Carrots *Note - I left out carrots. Print Parmesan Cheese Crisps becom…

Every year a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker,or a distant relative end up handing you a plate (or tin or Ziploc or Tupperware container) full of Holiday treats. Cookies, brownies, truffles, rice krispie treats and other goodies that not only can you not eat but don't really want around the house. I also make foodie goodie plates. This year I am taking on a different approach and picking 4-5 items that can be enjoyed by all including a few Vegans, those that are lactose intolerant, those that are WLS patients and those that don't worry about the 5-10 pounds they gain during the holidays. With the plates I will have the recipes for each item printed on index cards, this …

I'm flying cross country on Thursday so I'm going to be spending most of the day either at the airport or on the plane. Does anyone have any suggestions of low calorie (around 100 calories) non-perishable snacks that I can bring? I hate buying food at the airport because I'm a control freak who likes to weigh and measure as much of my food as possible.

I am about 6 weeks post op. I have a family function today and was asked to make dip. No biggie, found lots of good recipes that are good for me. One problem....what can I eat this dip with? I am pretty much convinced I will just have to use a fork lol. Is there no kind of whole grain whole wheat cracker or toast I can have? I know, vegetables, but I am still not supposed to have raw yet and not a lot of veggies go with different dips....ugh. Any suggestions??

Oh man! I don't know why I haven't done this before but I finally bought something to keep food warm while I ate it and got down a whole scrambled egg and it stayed warm! I was so sick of cold meats and eggs and would eventually just give up halfway through once the food got too cold. Blech!.... I got a candle warmer / coffee cup warmer and set my plate on it and wha-la! Here is the one I got in case anyone is interested. (It has a larger surface so it heats a little larger surface.) broth warm in between very slow sips.)

Hey guys, I was curious if anyone purchased any kitchen items to help them with portion control... (2 oz storage containers, smaller forks, smaller plate, etc.) Someone I know who had the RYN bought 2 oz baby food containers that she said helped her, but I wasn't sure if it was necessary. Obviously I have a problem with portions NOW, but I am hoping with the planning process I will get better with it. Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions?

I'm only 3 weeks out, but I've been looking for different diet recommendations for sleeve patients. During my pre-op appointment my nutritionist specifically told me she was not the low-carb believer, meaning she would prefer me to have a balanced diet. I know most people here tend to stick to the low carb rule, so I started questioning her advice and I'm now a little bit lost. I am suppose to see her in 3 weeks to talk about my further diet, but I've come across this article: http://bariatrictimes.com/recommended-levels-of-carbohydrate-after-bariatric-surgery I now it applies mostly to the gastric bypass patients, however, the recommendations seem to be based on th…

Hi there, I am having a hard time with chewy foods. I got the clear from my doctor to eat anything to get my Protein in. I've been eating a fairly regular diet of: B: Egg sub with cheese or Low Sugar PB with WW Crackers and Bacon = 20ish Grams Protein Iced Coffee: Decaf with Kroger Carbmaster Milk = 11g Protein (not everyday) L: "Kibble" 30g Shelled Roasted pumpkin Seeds 28g Roasted salted Peanuts and 20g Whole Grain Goldfish = 20g Protein D: Protein Powder "Cookie"/Bar = 18-24g Protein I usually can't finish this. I know I'm not getting in my protein. Total daily Protein I'm getting is only about 45-50g. I would really REALLY like to come up with foods that a…

Hi everyone! My RNY is in about three weeks, so I'm working on getting everything in order for my post-op diet. I've come across something called "Protein shots." They're basically 3-4 oz drinks with about 20-45 grams of protein each. They're made by various companies and come in a variety of flavors. Most are very low in fat and sugar. Here's an example of one i'm looking at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003FKJLPM/ref=pd_luc_rh_sim_01_01_t_img_lh?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Has anyone had experience with these? I'm thinking they could be a miracle for the liquid phase when it's a struggle to drink enough protein through shakes that might be gritty or not taste so good.

So basically i called an "i didnt know" about food, when you realize something you never realized about a food or product. For example, i was looking at a "lite" salad dressing this weekend, and the "lite" version had 6 times as much sugar in it as the "regular" version did?? This is one of those events, those things that rally make you think about how things are labelled or how they are represented to us. WHat kinds of these events have you discovered?

I am a month post-op and am trying to incorporate some new foods into my diet. I see that hummus is on my approved list of foods, but I am struggling to figure out the best way to consume hummus. Pre-op I would eat hummus with pita chips or pita bread. What is the best way post-op to eat hummus? Does it pair well with other food (chicken), or can I use something to replace the pita chips for dipping?

Hope this helps you out on your VSG journey. Remember to follow your own surgeons plan as each surgeon has different methods. These are just so you can see what others are saying about how to reach goal. Me? Generally I tried to stay above 60 gm of Protein and below 30 gm of carbs. This is what worked for me and may not be right for you. Hope you like! I have been told different things so I want to get the "straight skinny" from those in the know! Here are my questions. 1. True/False: My doctor says my taste buds may change after surgery and foods I love now I may not like. 2. Will my appetite REALLY go away? Will the feeling of being hungry all the time disappear? 3. I'm totally addicted to food. While I have been able to mostly control it over the past 3 months, there are times when I have NO WILLPOWER and stop at Culver's on the way home from work for a big, greasy double cheeseburger and a soda! Will I be able to break this after the surgery? I'm so worried about this. I'm already having a hard time with the l…

It's my birthday in little less than two weeks and I was thinking about making myself a cake and have been scouring the Internet for recipes that fit my low sugar, low fat, low carb needs. I have fully accepted that this may be impossible but I figured I'd ask for suggestions? I can't really tolerant Splenda or aspartame. I made a practice cake with Swerve yesterday but something about Swerve made my tongue numb! I successfully made chocolate zucchini pumpkin bread and coconut flour shortbread (I add protein unflavoured protein powder) but I'm looking for something a little more birthday cake-y. Has anyone made something like that?

A new artificial sweetener is about to hit the market called Dolcia Prima. "Dolce" means sweet in Italian; and Prima means "first." The chemical name of this sweetener is allulose (also D-Psicose), and it’s totally natural, albeit rare. Small amounts of it may be found in figs and raisins for example. Allulose is 70% as sweet as table sugar, but contains just a 10% of the calories of processed sugar. Allulose has a taste profile that closely matches sugar, with an almost identical perception of sweetness over time. Allulose is not metabolized by the digestive system and therefore its effective calorie value is so low. It can be used in baking which is one of the pr…

Here are links to several VSG diets from well-respected bariatric surgeons, hospitals, and clinics around the world. I didn't make this list for the purpose of "diet shopping". It is remarkable how similar the advice is in most of these lists. We all know it: Protein first Lots of protein (I think the lowest plan here calls for 50 grams) Don't drink with meals Drink 8+ glasses of Water a day If your surgeon's plan is not on this list already and it's published online, leave the link as a reply and I'll add it. Maybe we can get this thread added to the stickies. Auckland Weight Loss Surgery (New Zealand) Baker Bariatrics Brigham and Women's Hospital Columbia Univers…

I have been using the MyNetdiary food tracker for the iPhone and it is a really great app. You just take a picture of the UPC code and it list tall of the nutritional information for that food. You enter the serving size and instantly your intake for the day is calculated. You can even scan ur vitamins and track your water intake. Easy to use also. It also gives the food choices a rating so you know if it is a wise choice (A-F).

Due to constant stomach pain I'm going to try going back to a full liquids/soft diet for a bit. I think part of the issue is having difficulty digesting dairy. I need suggestions for getting 15 grams of dairy-free, soft Protein 5 times a day. I'm also curious if others have experienced bloating, gas and feeling like a brick was in their intestines even with daily bowel movements?

Such a learning curve... Now the hard part begins Who knew that eating a healthy balanced diet was soooo complicated?? Well not me. No wonder I've been overweight for 30 years. No wonder my children have no clue about nutrition. For some people, the surgery and recover may be the hardest part. Maybe even the low calorie count is the hardest part. As for me, the hard part begins now that I am eating a regular diet. I want to learn about balanced diets. I want to eat healthy. It's about so much more for me than just eating little portions. Trying to figure out how to get in the right amount of Protein, vegetables, fruits, starches, dairy, and fats. On top of that k…

I read this interesting article on the quality of different types of Protein sources today. I couldn't wait to start pureed foods partly because I'm concerned that the protein in powders and drinks isn't the same quality as that in real food. I found this article interesting, and some of the recipes sound really good, especially for those of us who don't eat meat! I can't wait to try the egg muffins. Do you think they would be ok for Stage 3 (soft foods), or will I have to wait for Stage 4 (regular foods). I actually have the same question about quinoa. I LOVE quinoa, but I'm not sure when I can start eating it again. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-best…

So basically i am getting the feeling that we are supposed to be on a low carb diet from now on , does that seem pretty accurate? I have been stalled for 2 weeks sitting between 240-243. Ive been eating low to no carbs for breakfast and lunch and then having a little for dinner. Should i just cut them down for dinner too? I cant say i am having tons maybe a few from crackers or a small portion of potato, or even flat out bread.

Hi guys, I'm pre-op and trying to plan ahead what I can eat during the various phases after surgery. My nutritionist suggests sticking to foods with 10 grams of sugar or less and 5 grams of fat or less. But she also says olive oil is okay. Does that sound right to you guys? I'm hoping I can continue to use olive oil in salad dressings and to roast veggies. What's your experience been? Also, I have questions about meat. When I'm back to solid food, do you know if 93 percent fat free ground turkey or chicken is okay? Or does it need to be 99 percent fat free? I tried making turkey burgers this weekend with the 99 percent and they were, understandably, pretty dry. I'm wond…

Balanced nutrition - Protein, carbs, and fats. An emphasis is certainly put on protein. It is the priority. However, Carbs and fats are also important. The bala…

I went to dinner this evening with family visiting from out of town and wound up sitting next to two cousins and a nephew who were second and fourth graders. I found it very interesting that I ate about the same as the second graders (except they filled up on chips, salsa, and queso before the entree and drank real pop). I even still had leftovers to bring home. This post-surgery life really is amazing.
