Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by Fishing girl,

17 days post op. I just started soft food. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I'm only down 7 lbs and have been stalled for the last three days with my weight remaining the same. I am hungry off and on during the day, even though I am drinking Water or Protein drinks all day. I will add that I stopped taking estrogen pills 30 days before surgery and have made the decision to stay off them. The hot flashes are brutal. Could this stall me? If so I'll get back on the estrogen. Quote Edit

I am just over 11 months out. I'm reading the book A Pound of Cure, and I really like where it is going. I would love to hear anyone else's experience with this way of eating? I will post my experience as well as I move through the process.

  4. So i'm post op and super bored with the same old shakes. But i love using them for breakfast because i'm not big on eating first thing in the morning either. But it's time to switch it up. I love premier but if i have to look at it again, i think i'm going to lose my shit lol. So what are your favorite shakes and flavors??? (Preferably available in a ready to drink form too) Thank you all in advance.

Maintenance is tough, it's a super fine line for me. Typically, I avoid ALL fat in food. Recently, however, I have noticed that some fat helps with maintenance/loss. On days where I stick to Protein and small to moderate amounts of fat, I either lose a pond or two or maintain. On days where I allow a small amount of carbs, even if healthy carbs, I can gain 1-2 lbs by the next day. Is this unusual? I understand that some fat is needed to absorb certain nutrients & Vitamins so maybe that is a contributing factor??

Because I have no idea I feel like I'm messing up, because my nutritionist just tells me I can eat what I want as long as it's low in carbs and fat, but if I find something low in carbs it's high in fat and vice versa Like today I have a strong craving for tacos and I know I can't have it So please can I have some advice ? Or am I overthinking it ?

Before surgery I used to chug Water. Big water drinker. But now post-surgery, I can drink anything under the sun with no problems. But with water, taking small sips, regardless of the water temp (I'm not a big ice water person, so it's usually room temp), and regardless of whether I had any food earlier or not, I tend to get stomach pain. It's pretty annoying, because drinking water is the one thing I've always been good at. Now I'm sometimes reluctant to drink it because of the stomachache. Anyone have any words or wisdom or experience? I am about three weeks out, btw. Hopefully, and presumably, this will pass. It's frustrating how we all can have such drastically di…

  12. Started by ANewLife4_Me,

I get to start soft foods Thursday!!!!!! Curious what everyone ate as their first soft food? My plan says I can have soft/moist chicken and deli turkey/chicken. Would ground turkey fall under this or would that be a different consistency/harder to digest? (Emailing NUT too, just seeing if anyone has experience and noticed a huge difference) My husband has been cooking for himself and I wanted to make something we could both enjoy. Found a turkey meatloaf recipe with ground turkey, melted cheese and sautéed onion/pepper. Hoping I could test a bite and see if it works going down. Right now, I have been preparing my daughters' meals and it is all I can do not to lick eve…

I am 2 weeks post op, and I'm so tired I can barley function through out the day. I am certain I'm not getting enough protein, but with the 2 oz restriction I find it nearly impossible to reach the 60 g requirements. My dr specifically restricts against protein shakes and I'm unsure how to get the protein I need with out them. I'm fallen short meeting my fluid requirements up until today, but I am doing well with my vitamins. I also work out on the treadmill for 30 minutes 5X a week. Can anyone offer any advice please? Thanks

Sorry of this question has been asked over and over. I haven't read through all the previous topics, but I'm looking for ideas. I am 4 months post op and allowed to try anything as long as it is sugar free and low carbs. I have been existing on salmon, tuna, soft cooked chicken, soft veggies, cheeses and eggs for 3 months now. Getting boring!! Some things I like (and am hoping to incorporate into tasty dishes/recipes): Artichoke Onions Creams Roasted Red Bell Peppers Porabella mushrooms Garlic Chicken (if soft) All fish Steak- if extremely tender Eggs if not overcooked (Benedict is yummy) Thai seasonings and sauces Spinach Nut butters Bananas, Apples…

  16. I'm officially 2 weeks post op and can move on from liquids (thank God????). My surgeon skips puréed because they say essentially it's the same because they're allowing soft/moist protein and when you chew chew chew it'll be puréed. 17. So I'm 2 years out from gastric sleeve surgery. Last year I started eating carbs again and got way off track. I posted about this back at the end of December and I'm still trying to work the kinks out, since I have been on-and-off doing well with getting back into the healthy lifestyle that I LIVED BY before reintroducing carbs. I know that I can do it I've just been having trouble keeping myself from falling back into old habits. I've recently noticed that I almost always get sick when I drink/eat anything dairy-based AND sweetened. Whether the sweetener is artificial (no sugar added hot chocolate or protein shakes) or real (like one serving of ice cream on a cheat day…

Hi everyone! So, I'm 3 weeks post op in my puréed phase. I start soft foods next Wednesday. I was curious as to when people started incorporating sushi back into their diet? I know not everyone likes it, but I really love sushi. Obviously the rice is a no-no, but what about sashimi? I'm currently allowed to have flaky fish, so I feel like it might be okay now, but I wasn't sure about the raw aspect. I plan to email my Nut and ask, but I just wanted a few opinions here first!

I am almost 3 weeks post-op and I’ve been following my eating instructions very closely. I know I’m early on in the process but I was wondering, when should I start tracking my calorie intake again like I was pre-op? Up to this point I have had no issues with eating, but like I said, I’m following my instructions closely. So at this point I’m not really worried about overeating, I’m just trying to make sure I get my protein and water in every day. At this point I have only been hungry maybe once or twice I’ve been losing weight at a rapid pace and my blood sugars have been a little high to my liking but stable. Any information would be greatly appreciated thanks

  24. Hi everyone, how are you all doing tonight? I'm 8 months out from my surgery and so far I can handle just about anything with little to no issue. I have a question, though, regarding soups and stews. I'm currently sick and I have this insane craving for homemade chicken soup, but I am too nervous to even have it because it is both a liquid and solid meal. I've been doing very well at not having liquids with my meals till 30 to an hour after eating. How do I do this? Do I eat the chicken and veggies first, then sip the liquid later? Or should I just not do this till much further down the road? For stews, I don't really drink the liquid, even before the surgery. Would …

I'm struggling really hard right now with getting in enough calories and protein. I'm on soft foods, supposed to eat 2 oz every 2 hours, and I'm still averaging under 500 calories and maybe about 40 grams of protein if I'm lucky. So I'm asking, those of you who are successful at getting in enough calories and protein... what are you eating? Can I please see a daily food plan? It would be ever so helpful.

Half cup spinach.. couple packets of approved sweetener to taste. Liquid egg whites 1 tsp cocoa powder. Mix the spinach, cocoa powder sweetener with a little Water and ice in a blender, then add PASTEURIZED egg whites, for just a little bit. (too long and it gets frothy). This is surprisingly good, high in Protein, and you can drink it from week 2. Nice way to start the day.

I have been reading everything I can get my hands on to position myself for long term success. I just read an interesting study. It was small (only 20 participants) so it is not conclusive, but does show there may be a correlation to fat and carb intake and energy levels. The study found that those with higher fat consumption and lower Carb intake had greater energy expenditure (REE) after exercise and higher fat utilization for fuel burning. They also found that there may be a link to body fat percentages. https://jissn.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1550-2783-11-S1-P6 so, how much fat/carb do you consume and has it been helpful in keeping weight off in…

  29. When it comes to being au courant, food has been one of the areas for decades. Nitwits grab onto the next big thing and suddenly would rather die than be caught dead eating the last big thing. Food as status. With that observation, I'd hate for anyone here to be a left-in-the-dust social outcast. Let it be known that I always thought kale over rated and have long been a fan and cook-eater of various greens. I draw the line at carrot tops, though. They simply look destined for the compost pile. (Might I take a taste behind closed doors?) http://www.purewow.com/food/2017-food-trends

But that makes 2 weeks of nothing but Protein shakes for meals. i try to add broth in, but its not enough protein to get in my daily requirements so Im still having to fill in with shakes. How am I gonna make it another week, and then a semi-liquid the third week. My stomach is continuously rubbling for food. And I feel like an over filled Water balloon all day with no solids. Ok so my first post here and I really hope I can get some help. My surgery was 10-27-16. Started at 318lbs, now I'm at 272lbs. I'm having real issues with getting the protein I need. I've tried GNC shakes, ISO pure, and premier protein shakes. All of them now make me want to puke! I cannot drink that stuff anymore. I also am having a real hard time eating anything. I've almost developed a complex about eating because of the way it makes my stomach feel. This past week I've been feeling like throwing up all day. Anything I smell or taste just makes me sick. Just when you think you've got this whole thing down; I'm stumped. I'm just 13 1/2 weeks post op and so far, this has been going well and I am losing well. Even went on a 4 day cruise on lost a pound. My instructions all along, or maybe I listened in the beginning was to stop when I felt full. I was very cautious of this as I never wanted to not have I ever gotten sick. I do use genepro in my morning coffee. But I try and make sure the remaining protein is from food. I've only recently been told I can add vegetables, but very sparingly. Mostly protein. As I progress to more dense protein, it often fills me quickly. I just noticed today, if I'm not…

A really common problem immediately pre-op is how to get all your protein in. One of the reasons that it is hard is that a lot of protein drinks taste horrible, especially immediately post-op when our sense of smell and our taste buds are heightened. One way to find a protein drink you like without breaking the bank is to get samples and try a lot of them. Where can you get samples? I have also heard that Syntrax will send you a sample pack of their products for free or a small charge, but I've never been able to find the info on how to get it on their site. I think you have to contact them via email or phone to get the samples. In terms of buying protein in stores, GN…
