Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by DavidOso,

what exactly is a liquid reset? what do you do? how long? how does it work? after the "reset", do you go back to full foods or start over with blended stage? i'm 6 months post op and have hit a HUGE STALL. it is becoming quite frustrating. (did i mention it is a HUGE STALL?). i have heard that a liquid reset can help get things back on track.

  2. In about ten days I'm taking a week long trip to Paris and London. I'm really excited but I'm also really anxious. I've taken several trips since surgery, but this will be the first one where I won't really be able to make any of my meals. I keep meticulous record of all of the calories I consume, my protein, sugar, etc, and the way I do that is by making 90% of my food and by knowing the exact nutritional breakdown of what's in the other 10%. I also weigh and measure everything (except for those rare occasions when I go out to eat.) I don't feel comfortable whipping out my food scale at a fancy Parisian restaurant and, especially in Paris, I may not be able to read ingre…

  3. Started by Alex Brecher,

I don’t go out to eat at restaurants very often; I prepare my own meals. It occurred to me, though, that I very rarely actually cook “real” dishes. Breakfast might be something like instant oatmeal and a container of yogurt; lunch could be a salad with some sardines or tuna, and dinner might be beans and veggies, or a vegetable stir fry made with tofu or veggie burger patties. But I don’t think that qualifies as “real” cooking! I guess I don’t really feel like taking the time to make gourmet meals, so I use convenience foods – although healthy ones – instead. Do you cook a lot? What do you make? Do you cook nightly? Or do you make, portion, and freeze big batches on w…

Oh my gosh I love this stuff. There are different brands and you can get them without salt, but it basically has onion, garlic, sesame seed, poppyseed, and sometimes caraway. I stopped eating bread and bagels months ago so I've been coming up with ways to use this. I mix it in plain Greek yogurt as a dip for veggies, dip hard boiled eggs into it, sprinkle on baked chicken breast...all yummy! Any other suggestions? I hope my tolerance for this hasn't changed, and I will be waiting a good long time to make sure the little bits don't get caught up in my sleeve.

Just discovered these and had to try them, so great for keeping a few in the car or gym bag! It's 25g whey Protein (mix of isolate, concentrate and hydrolysate so if you need isolate only it's not for you) 8g carb and 150cal PLUS electrolytes! It comes in this pouch like a juice drink and you mix with Water right in the pouch so you don't need a shaker bottle and they last like 18 months. I tried one and it's not quite as good as the Syntrax Matrix I like but not half bad. All natural with stevia/sugar blend (4g sugar). I wouldn't use it every day but perfect for emergency supply! I got it from their website but they have it on amazon and in stores too.

Hi guys, I'm so scared and ashamed of myself. I was sleeved December 10 and here it is December 27 and I already cheated. I am not getting my protein in (maybe 20 g a day) I hate the taste of my protein shakes already and I'm so tired of soup and cottage cheese, grits and oatmeal. I ate 2 deviled eggs today ( chewed them to mush ) but I just felt like I had to have them. Now I am scared a piece will get stuck in my staple or something and I feel like a total failure. I can only eat about 3 oz at a time which I know is correct but I get hungry so fast, within an hour. I know some of it has to be head hunger, but I'm trying not to be a failure at this and just keep thinkin…

  7. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/02/10/feds-poised-to-withdraw-longstanding-warnings-about-dietary-cholesterol/ Yep, you wonder why we keep getting conflicting advice from our NUTs and Surgeons...Its because it's much more complicated than just calories in vs calories out. Some of us have problems with cholesterol and hardened arteries, some of us don't. I suspect they will figure out a link between those who thrive on high Protein and those who need carbs. It probably is an odd mix of hormones and genetics that some brilliant physicists who specializes in chaos theory will finally figure out...but because he's not a "doctor" it will take twenty years…

  8. I have lost 51lbs so far, but I feel I'm eating to much, even though I'm hungry I never get sick after I eat. I've been journaling my food the last 3 weeks and average 1000-1200 Cals and 120g Protein. My Water intake hasn't been the best -about 40-50oz. I'm trying to cut cals down under 1000, but having a hard time because I feel hungry. I can eat up to 5oz of protein and feel fine. but the weight has definitely slowed coming off. Any help?

Scientists say so: http://www.buzzhearts.com/en/blog/drinking-tequila-could-help-you-lose-weight-according-to-scientists/101/ Seriously though, the article does show some scientific evidence for Agavins lowering blood sugar and helping with type 2 diabeties, so I hope that leads to more follow up studies on Agave sweeteners! I may have to switch over.

In a few weeks I am flying out to Phoenix to pick up an RV and then drive it back to the East Coast. I will only be bringing a small suitcase with me and the RV will be empty (no plates, cookware, or utensils). I am about 4 months post-op and was looking for some meal suggestions for this week long trip. The RV does have a refrigerator, hot Water, stove, and microwave. My plan at this point is to stop at a Walmart after picking up the RV to pick up supplies for the trip. Here is my partial list at this point: - Ready made Protein drink (Premier Protein) - Small frying pan - Paper plates - eggs - Cooked grilled chicken - Yogurt - Lunchmeat …

I love pickles. Love them! To me they are not a garnish but a side dish. I know that my tastes may change after surgery but where exactly do my beloved pickles come in? They are one of my favorite grabs when I want something crunchy or briney or puckery. I will also tuck a sandwich slice into a low carb tortilla with some turkey and vege cream cheese. Who is still loving pickles and when could you tolerate them? Thanks so much!!

  13. Started by songsmith,

My dietitian said we cannot add unsweetened cocoa powder to unflavored Protein during the liquid state. However, she did not explain this to my satisfaction (meaning she never could provide a "why.") She told me and later reiterated in the group class that in the liquid stage following surgery we can: Have Protein drinks, unflavored or flavored Cannot add ingredients (such as fruit) sugar free syrups are an exception We can make them with milk ("they'll taste better" Now, I have read the ingredients list on Syntrax nectar chocolate Truffle (an acceptable drink) and other chocolate protein powders. They all contain cocoa powder. Since Hershey's unsweetened cocoa onl…

So im exactly six days post opt and received a rude awakening from my nurse. I thought our full liquid meant food low sugar low cal high Protein liquid form. Ive been eating bean Soup and was told I could really hurt myself , get sick or die. I have a very clear understanding now, but I called her about my chest pains and now I'm terrified. Can't even sleep. Like I don't want to die...sounds dramatic but I'm serious. Besides if I intentionally wanted to abandon the rules I would die from canollis or chicken marcella...ijs this is serious but jeeze I would want my last meal to be chic peas. Hopefully the pain goes away soon and I finshed my day off with broth and…

Starting to panic a little. 7 days post op sleeve. Drank 1200ml yesterday and drank 2 litres too day. CAN I DRINK 2 much (water only) ?

  16. I am sorry if this question has been asked here before, but am hopeful people will still respond. I was given instructions on what to consume post surgery during each stage, but there aren't specifics about calories. I've been using My Fitness Pal to track what I consume. I've only been eating around 420-480 calories since returning home from having the surgery on Friday. I have been able to get 50 grams of Protein or more by making most meals Protein shakes. It seems like an inadequate number of calories and fat to me.

  17. I'm fairly certain I got fat out of convenience. I am not lazy by any means, I am actually super busy. I have two kids who go to different schools, neither in our district so I have to drive them both and pick them both up. They both do activities after school and are on totally different schedules. I own a business that I run from my house that has me in the car most of the time and I spend a few hours of each day at my martial arts school. I'm fairly anal about keeping my house in order and I like to have dinner most nights for my family, even if we don't all get to sit down and eat together. I barely have a minute to myself but I know that my lifestyle is not at …

  18. Started by Indieflickers,

I'm almost ten months out since surgery and I've been noticing the last month or so that I get hungry a lot sooner after a meal, sometimes only an hour later. I'm still consuming no more than 4 ounces of food per meal - 3 ounces dense protein and 1 ounce fruit or vegetables. I also still follow the liquid rule - I stop drinking half an hour before a meal and 45 minutes after. Has any one else had this problem? What do you do about it?

  19. Looking back, I don't think my nutritionists (NUT) added all that much to my journey. Both of them offered very basic information that I learned in high school back in the dark ages and already knew from a lifetime of dieting. I don't especially regret the 3-4 hours I've spent with them over the last year, but wish they'd offered more. Plus, I see threads here from time to time that make me think some NUTs don't understand much about bariatric surgery or the differences in nutritional requirements for bypass patients and sleeved patients. Your thoughts?

    Started by Guest,

I am just over 12 weeks out from gastric bypass surgery and have only consumed creamed or blended/pureed soups. I have come across two great recipes one for white chicken chili and one for cheesy chicken and cauliflower soup. So I am just wondering how much to consume per meal? I don't have a caloric/protein per serving breakdown so just wondered what others do with soups, stews and chilis to ensure you are getting the proper nutrients per meal.

Please post your go-to foods, recipes, etc for the purée (aka creamy) phase. Remember these foods should be smooth with no chunks. Also remember that you can have foods from the liquid phase during the purée phase. I made a list of all the post-op diets I could find from reputable sources online (surgeons and Bariatric Centers of Excellence, as well as international practices of renown). The list is here: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/255776-list-of-vsg-post-op-diets-from-surgeons/ If your surgeon publishes their diet plan online, add the link to the original post.

Hello my friends (tips hat) Got home couple hours ago from having gastric sleeve. Could someone please tell me a rough idea of how many millilitres per day my intake should be on this liquid diet. I am 6 ft 2 and 365 pounds. Thanks Redmond

  27. Started by Daisee68,

Ok silly thing to be excited about I guess but at 5 1/2 months post-op, I have not even ventured towards a piece of bread out of fear of it "sticking". Honestly I know I can live without it, but I really needed a way to get my carbs and Fiber up a little and mostly have really struggled with Breakfast choices as I am savory / salty craving person and not a sweets person. ANYWAY, I bought Cobblestone Flatbread Rounds 100% Whole Wheat and they are very thin. I toasted only 1/2 of the "round" which was 50 calories, 10g carb, 2.5g Protein and topped it with a Laughing Cow cheese wedge and 1 oz of deli turkey. I took tiny bites but so far so good! Probably need to up the …

Is there any reason why I can't mix a packet of Protein powder with a ready-to-drink Protein shake to get a double hit of protein? Thanks.

  30. Started by Indieflickers,

In my job I don't always get to sit down and eat lunch. For the past nine months I have been mostly eating variations of the same meal - roll ups. Deli meat rolled with cheese, or vegetables, etc with once ounce of some kind of fruit or veg on the side. I'm definitely getting tired of them which is dangerous because the catered lunches my work provides are looking more and more appealing. Does anyone have suggestions for lunches I can eat while running around or in the car? I'm still only eating 4 ounces per meal and I try to keep it closer to the 150 calorie range.

  31. I'm in the middle of my 7th week post-op and back on solid food. I've gone to Jason's Deli a couple of times to have a cup of Soup for lunch. Just looking at all the food on everyone's plate makes me feel sick. It's really strange. I just can't stop wondering how they can eat so much at one time. I don't know how my mind has changed the way it sees food so quickly. Anyone else have this problem? I live alone so I really don't see others eating unless I go out for a meal.

What soups are you guys eating? I'm not into making my own just for me my family not big on soups. I'm on the soft stage gastric bypass had my surgery 10/7 and can start solids in a week and half. So I tried Campbell's soup creamy shrimp and mushroom boring!

  33. Started by Indieflickers,

I'm almost 8 months out from surgery and I'm trying to gauge how many calories I should be eating. Right now I'm averaging about 1300 a day which feels way too high, and yet I still feel fairly hungry. I'm eating really clean - lean meat, vegetables, etc - and getting, frankly, too much Protein. Where were you guys at at this point?

  34. We've seen the term head hunger used with great frequency. What does it mean to you? What do you experience? How do you differentiate head hunger from empty-stomach hunger? What do you do to avoid it? And when it strikes, how do you manage it?

I just made some refried Beans with a tiny amount of cheddar cheese. It isn't sitting well with me. What alternatives do I have to mix in with the beans? I might be having some lactose intolerance, hoping it is just my body adjusting to foods again. Thanks everyone.

Hi All, I don't have much time to cook for myself and in all honesty i don't know how to cook well at all. I tried and they call tasted baddddd. Any ideas of what I can buy in the supermarket that I can just grab and buy and eat (pop into the microwave and it's a done deal) that is healthy and that you guys post op have approved and worked for you? I mean deli hams work but eating them everyday has been boring. Maybe soups? What kinds do you buy that doesn't hinder your weight loss? I have low fat cheeses etc. But I feel like there is more out there I just don't have ideas of what.

  39. This seems the best forum/sub-forum, yes? Today's WebMD email includes a slide show with some good tips for eating less, "10 Ways to Control Your Eating." It's followed immediately by another, "Secrets of Healthy Eating and Portion Control." Some of the tips are new to me; maybe you'll get some good ideas, too. http://www.webmd.com/diet/ss/slideshow-10-ways-to-control-eating?ecd. Another is on binge eating. It identifies the signs and may or may not give tips (didn't view it). http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/eating-disorders/binge-eating-disorder/ss/slideshow-binge-eating-disorder

I have found that I cannot get down a Protein shake in under 30 minutes and have not been able to finish them. Then, I came across a Think Thin bar that has 20 g protein and no sugar. My NUT doesn't love them because "they were created for people to eat on spaceships" but I find that with my ridiculous lifestyle they come in handy. What do you guys think?
