Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by mjmeadows,

So I had the bypass on June 6 and I'm on stage 2 puréed food. My doctors office says if you can tolerate a 1/4 cup of puréed food you can move up to 1/2 cup. If I eat a 1/4 cup I don't feel satisfied but if I eat a 1/2 cup I'm satisfied. My wife is arguing with me cause she sees people on Facebook who can hardly tolerate food or water. I have no issues with water.

  2. My dr and dietician say i should eat 3 meals per day. But all my sleeve friends have told me they eat 6 mini meals/ snacks per day. Which one do you do? And why does that work better for you?

  3. Ok, a little about me and my situation - Nearly 2 years post-op Lost around 120kg (264 pounds) so far Well pleased with the result No complaints at all HOWEVER... I still have another 30kg (66 pounds) or so until I'm "happy" I've had stalls and fluctuations just like everyone else. I keep my Protein up MOST of the time I'm just getting back into exercise/gym after a break over Christmas (ok, ok - November and December) What I want to know is this - Simply put, what is YOUR carb intake like? How many grams per day? What about your protein/fat/carb percentages? You see, I've been trying to keep my carb count as LOW as possible This has meant that, on occa…

  4. Sleeved 6-15-16 (Thursday will be 1-yr out for me) I hit 100lbs lost back at the end of January (so that took me a little over 7 months to lose) Have been at a stand still ever since. Problem is, I started sneaking in a little junk food here and there (that was my main weekness before surgery). And sadly, I have never gotten sick while eating said junk food (cookies, cakes, ice cream, candy etc) I have also started craving Dunkin Donuts caramel iced coffee with cream and sugar. I have always LOATHED DESPISED HATED coffee. And now this. UGH!!! My question is this.......is it too late for me? Will I be able to get back on track to start losing again? I still have …

Watermelon - where does it fit in? It isn't high in protein, but can you count it towards water intake (since it is naturally flavored water, technically)? What stage would it fall under? You need to chew it but it melts in your mouth - does that qualify as the mushy stage? I'm honestly just curious. I plan on sticking to what my doctor and nutritionists tell me, but I had a piece of watermelon yesterday and got to wondering what stage it would be a viable option.

  6. Hi everyone! I work a desk job and I've been thinking of starting a little stockpile of sleeve-friendly snacks for days where I don't have time to prepare a lunch so I can avoid the cafeteria. Anyone got any drawer-friendly suggestions? So far my list is just quest bars--I avoid nuts because I always go overboard with them lol

  9. Started by xoxococojay,

What are some of your favorite recipe ideas post op? What do you love to make both for breakfast, snacks and dinner? I'm running out of creative ideas since my appetite is gone. I'll try anything new. Also, what do you eat on days when you don't feel like cooking?

  10. So I'm 8 months out and gone from a size 18 down to a size 6. I'm 5-3 and 135# right now. I've been consuming roughly 1400 calories per day. Pre-op testing showed that I had a very high metabolism (blessing and a curse). I don't want to trash it. I have no trouble getting in my fluids and proten. I do a combo of either walking/running, yoga, and interval training 3-5 days per week. I have struggled with hunger from very early on post-op.... real hunger. Anyway, I'm still losing about a pound per week, but am thinking I want 130 to be my new goal. So I'm thinking ahead to "maintenance" nutrition. What would a healthy, balanced macro profile look like for me? I'm thinking I…

  15. Started by Berry78,

I've seen several posts where people are diagnosed with low potassium post op. After reviewing my own meals, I realized my own consumption is 1/3 the recommended daily amount. So, I did some research. In the general population, low potassium is almost non existent. Potassium is found in virtually all food groups. The problem in the bariatric population is that all food consumption is cut down dramatically. The recommended daily consumption is around 4500mg. The minimum daily consumption is thought to be between 1500mg and 2000mg. Consuming less than the minimum will likely result in a deficiency, which could even be lethal (heart rhythm problems). My own co…

I'm nine months post out and have been at goal for the past 5 months. I know we should not drink alcohol, breads, sweets, and large portions once we reach goal. But are there foods we should avoid altogether because they are dangerous for our small stomach or we can longer process them in the same way. I don't overeat, I never eat bread or pasta. I have the occasional small bite of birthday cake, or a piece of chocolate and I have an occasional glass of wine since reaching goal. I haven't changed my weight in all that time. So this is how I've decided to exist. I am no saint but for the most part I stay on track and an occasional treat hasn't affected my w…

  19. I am pre-op but looking for a blender or food processor for when I get to the the pureed phase of post op. I have looked at the magic bullet, the ninja, and just basic ones but I'm indecisive. What do you use and why do you like it? And what uses does it have for after your puree phase, I hate to think it will just sit in my cabinet later. I currently use a $10 smoothie blender from Walmart for protein shakes which has served me well but I don't think it will puree very well.

So I am looking for some snacks that I can carry with me when I am unable to have a good meal that fits my diet or when I am on the go. I had read that the Quest protein bars are the best tasting an aren't loaded with sugars. Are these good or is there something better out there? I am sorta picky when it comes to taste, but who isn't? I mean if it taste nasty most people won't eat it. I know these bars have around 20 grams of carbs in them but the net carbs aren't to bad do to the fiber content. I just don't want to sabotage myself especially since I'm dealing with some stall issues already. Thanks for any insight and advice!

  28. Can you all help, 10 months post op. Still reaching my goal weight. How much protein should I be consuming each day? How many calories a day? and How many carbs? My pre-surgery weight was 245 lbs. I've lost 64 lbs. Lowest weight so far 181. Goal weight 145.

  30. Everyone, I am so afraid I'm going to gain all the weight back! I started at almost 300 lbs. when I had my surgery in July of 2015. I was in the high 160's with only about 10 lbs. to go until I reached the goal weight I had set for myself at 150. My surgeon originally said he thought I'd probably level out at 180, but I refused to accept that as my goal weight. Now, I am wondering if he actually knew because of his experience that 180 is about what I'd be able to maintain, or if I allowed his words to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I have been gaining and am so unhappy with myself, but can't seem to get it together! I am only 5' tall so I just can't be hap…

I am 2 months out and need some Breakfast alternatives. I have been eating yogurt but find that it doesn't stay with me and I'm hungry an hour or two later. For some reason, eggs are not compatible with my sleeve; the first bite is like a cork-no matter how much I chew it first. I need something that is portable so I can take it to work. I have a Protein drink/bar (spilt up in the day) to supplement my protein, so need something different. Suggestions, please!!!

We've used Blue Apron for a few years now. It has generally worked well for us. The recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. It lets me cook (and I'm no chef) on the nights when my partner (who is a great chef) can't. But unfortunately we're quitting Blue Apron. We've had just too many problems with late/missing deliveries and missing/leaking/spoiled ingredients. So now we're looking around for a different service. Purple Carrot looked nice, though it's all vegetarian. Also, it appears to run low on Protein and high on carbohydrates. We'd tried Hello Fresh but were disappointed (I guess "Mostly Canned", while more accurate, doesn't have the same ring). Are…

  37. I bought a boat load of them and even though each box has a flavor to it, they all basically taste like mildly flavored cardboard. It's just plain nasty. So I'm tossing them all out. I can't stand them! total waste of money. I should have bought just a few boxes but ending up buying a boatload and just can't stomach the taste. The idea was to have a simple easy snack on the go but these are hardly Snacks if they taste so awful.

  38. Good Morning! So I am 5 years post op, and over the course of the last two years or so, I have gained about 15lbs. I have been as low as 153, but was happy at 158lbs. Once I hit that goal, I kept working out, but started to not follow the diet my surgeon had directed. That's when the weight start creeping back on, and I found myself at 174. I will be honest, I actually do not have a problem being at this weight..but I have read so many horror stories about people who became comfortable and gained almost 50 plus pounds back, so I decided that for a week I would go back to the basics just to see if I could lose a few pounds. So, starting last Monday I went back to thre…

I have been comparing post op diets from different surgery centers, and even the maintenance portions vary. Johns Hopkins recommends eating 3 meals and two snacks (one snack is just a cup of milk). Baha Bariatrics recommends 3 meals and no snacks. My pre-op self eats constantly, although I have eaten anything from 2 -5 meals a day while dieting before with good (albeit temporary) results. What do y'all do? Took five days to get rid of all the fluid they pumped into me. On clear liquid diet and am so hungry. Is this normal? I'm getting worried. I'm not sure I can make another week feeling this hungry.

  41. I am trying to wean myself off of the protein shakes and onto more solid foods to get the required protein. Any ideas on high protein foods to replace the shakes? I had my surgery one month ago so I can eat soft foods. My surgeon encourages eating rather than drinking protein at this stage to get metabolism to kick in. Eating meat gives me stomach pain unless it's pureed and most meats taste yucky pureed. I have bought some baby food meats but they are only 8 grams of protein. Appreciate your replies!

  42. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I will be 7 months out on 3/10. I have only lost 35 pounds since surgery. I get in all my protein and all of my liquid. I am working out both cardio and weight training and I am not seeing any movement on the scale. My surgery weight was 259.6 my current weight is 224.2. I take my vitamins. I get in my 10k steps... Can someone tell me where and how I need to make adjustments.... This is getting frustrating and quite discouraging because I am truly working for the body I want.

It's been two weeks since I got sleeved and I'm already noticing myself racking up calories throughout the day by grazing. What I'm eating is generally healthy (protein shakes, jello, peas, cottage cheese, tomato basil soup, Crystal Light) - none of what I eat isn't on the avoids list for me. It just seems I feel like I snack around more than I should. Have you all experienced this and how did you put an end to it because I know a sleeve reduces an intake... it's me who controls the frequency. Partial venting here. I know I need to change. I am 3 weeks post-op...when can I have coffee?

  46. I'm 3 days post-op. In the hospital I was served diluted fruit juice, which I was too afraid to try. I simply don't understand how diluted fruit juice would not cause dumping. Apple juice has 24g of sugar per cup. Even if I dilute it with 50/50 with water, that's still 12g which seems like WAY too much. This morning I attempted just 4g of sugar in my protein shake and had what seemed like early dumping symptoms. I am similarly concerned about milk, which I am allowed to have beginning tomorrow. Skim milk has 11g of sugar per cup. Again, won't this cause dumping? Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

  48. Had the SIPS procedure last Friday (3/17). Everything on my Facebook feed screams "food!" We have family helping us out and they brought my boys some pizza for supper. The smell was almost too much, I wanted a piece so badly! Then I got angry thinking "What have I done with myself? I have taken away this wonderful thing called stuffing my face" I know it sounds horrid. I know I needed to change. But that monster reared it's ugly head and then I started thinking of how much I would love McDonald's, and pork rinds, and all these things I want right now. Which I wouldn't eat. But I felt angry, and sad, and irritated that I couldn't just eat what I wanted right then…

This has probably been asked before, but I'm wondering how many grams of macronutrients do you aim for in each day post-op? I am still pre-op (hoping to submit this week to insurance). I've been told I need 60g of Protein each day, but what should I aim to stay at or under for fat and carbs? I was looking at daily recommendations from Health.gov (which I realize isn't targeted towards bariatric surgical patients), but based on their recommendations it would be something like this: Health.gov Recommendations: Fat: 20-35% Protein: 10-35% Carbs: 45-65% Fiber: 28g 34g fat = 20% (low range) 60g protein = 35% (high rang…
