  1. Started by Plucky,

Hi I was sleeved 7/24 and am trying to get prepared. I will be traveling on a mini vacation during what should be the beginning of the puree phase, I go to the doctor and the nutritionist in a few days, but I'm trying to plan ahead. The first 4 days will be staying with a relative, so I'll have access to a kitchen and am not worried. The second half will be at a small hotel with a microwave and fridge. Would it make sense to buy a portable blender, and a strainer or two? Eat in my room while my hubs and parents get real food :)? Any gadgets that will make life easier? Thanks in advance!

Hello All, So I had my band installed in 08' I went from 410 to 160 in about 1.25 years. It was amazing. However, my family kept saying I was too thin, I listened and got on sliders...so now I am up to 250 or so...still better than 400, my restriction is good, doc approved, but pretty tight. I just started CrossFit, YAY! However, I need to stop the sliders and eat better. They say to eat paleoish and all that, but I could not finish 1 chicken breast without throwing it up, my stomach can't hold it. I need small sized meal ideas that are protein-rich, vitamins and minerals are always a plus, low calories, I need to cut carbs out for a bit, I need protein to build…

What are some of the things you've struggled with after your surgery? What resources and support do you wish you had more access too during this journey?

  4. Started by Miss Ivory,

I’m told by my nutritionist that I should have all of my protein within 200-400 calories per day in these first two weeks post-op. Except it’s been a week and a half and I’ve lost 21 pounds, and I feel very weak most of the time (I needed to lose 75 more to get to my goal weight - now 54 lbs). When I google, all I get are diets explaining THAT post-op folks should limit their calories to approx. 300 calories, but not WHY. Any insight?

Hello friends, You guys are the best, so I wanted to ask about eating at restaurants. I sometimes travel for my job, it's normally in the spring but I have a 2 day trip next week. I am only 4/5 weeks out and I'm still on eggs, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, etc. By the time the trip comes, I'll be able to have shaved deli meats and cheeses. What do you recommend when it comes to eating at restaurants? I'm worried about, let's say they go somewhere and I can get scrambled eggs. Will what they cook it in make me sick? How do you know what they are cooking your food in if it's not grilled salmon for example. Will certain oils make me sick? I really don't want to dump …

I need help, I'm at work and I'm so nauseated, I've been for hours. I try going in the restroom and hang my head over the toilet hoping to just throw up. i hope it would make me feel better. Now i have done very well without soda, dont need it don't want it. I don't want to ruin my sleeve, I want to take care of it the best I can, but I'm in a bind, there is nothing here but bending machines full of crap. I don't feel good at all. in one machine there is some finer ale. if I let it go flat can I drink some. I'm desperate. all that sugar, ugh I don't want it but I'm at a loss of what to do. also, I cant go home sick, I just got written up for being over my…

  7. Started by Emersyn,

Hey there! I am 10 days post-op and I see my nurse and nutritionist on Tuesday to see if I can move on to soft solids. My question is, for those of you out of the starting phase, has anyone had an issue tolerating spicy food and snacks? I know sweets are an issue, even right now I don't like things that are too sweet. Takis are my alltime favorite snack, and I would be heartbroken if I could no longer have them. (That and sushi haha). Obviously it would be in moderation due to it being a tortilla, but as an occassional snack, is it ok? What about spicy food for meals? Anyone have any insight on if this negatively affected them or if you were ok with it in small quantities…

Hello all. Was thinking about getting a Vitamix hoping it will be useful for post op diet. Anybody have one and if so are you getting your moneys worth from it? Thank you!

  9. I am 8 weeks post RNY. Need guidance on what the best standard daily intake for gram % for breaking stalls and Continued aggressive weight loss. (Carbs—Fats). I can reach the daily protein goal as well as liquids without any problems. New to the grp. So, apologize if this has already been asked previously by-others. ?

I’m 4 days post op from gastric sleeve surgery , I’m 220 pounds and They told me to drink light juice for 2 weeks and I was just wondering if it’s okay to blend watermelon and strain it so the juice has no fiber and drink it? My friend whom also had the surgery a year ago said that the hospital actually recommended watermelon juice for the first two weeks

  11. Hi all. Needing a little encouragement or an idea for some new food to try. I’ve been managing with my protein drinks, sugar free ice pops, cottage cheese, soups (broth). I saw the doc for my 7 day post op visit on Tuesday and he said to try egg. I did and threw it up. I think I ate too much. I’m bored of what I’m eating and feeling depressed about it today. Can anyone give me some ideas? Is it going to get better?

  12. Started by Letsgetgoing2018,

Tried eating some scrambled eggs last night but threw them up (added a little cheese for flavor), tolerating cottage cheese tomato soup, cream of chicken soup. Need some other things to try in the category to keep it interesting. Any suggestions?

  13. Hi all. Seven days post op. Doing well and had my one week visit with surgeon today. He said I can try egg whites and steamed veges (haven’t yet). Cooked Cornish game hens for the family and want to try a piece but not sure if it’s too soon. Can anyone tell me when I would be ready to try a moist bite of hen?

If you're on regular foods diet stage, do you observe the 30-30-30 (or 20-20-20) rule when some of your meals are liquid? i.e. You have some meals of solid foods, but also have a shake for breakfast. Do you not drink for 30-minutes either side of the shake meal? I'm asking because I'm good about real "mealtimes" but if I drink a Protein water on my way into work, I tend to immediately make a cup of tea when it's gone. So, I was wondering if I need to set my timer after the Protein water.

I’m struggling with this diet terribly. I’m 16 days post op so I’m suppose to only eat puréed food. I can’t do it. In fact a big part of me regrets doing the gastric bypass altogether. I know that’ll probably change once I start losing the weight but I miss bread. I haven’t puréed anything and I seem to be dealing with it fine. I’m hungry coming evening and I don’t seem to get that full feeling. Struggle hopeless. Any advice encouraged. Thx!

  17. I am not great with protein, so of course, my doctor upped my minimum to 75g/day. UGH! I chronically get close to evening and still need 10-20 g more protein. So I ordered the protein shots from the BP store and tried my first one today - apple. Delish! It's tangy, not toooo sweet, kind of like a cross between an apple Jolly Rancher and pineapple sherbet. It's less than 3 oz., so even in the evening it's not hard to sneak in. I'm delighted. I'd like to get away from supplements, but for the time being, I take a lot of them. This is much better than having to drink a 16 oz. Protein water right before bed.

  20. Ok guys! This is so helpful to us newbie losers! Please tell us how many weeks/months/years out from surgery you are and what kind of surgery. If you can, list your portions and nutritional averages. Please post what a day of food looks like to you including any meal with calories (i.e. real food, protein drinks, protein bars, snacks, etc). OK! So excited to see what y'all post!!!

Since there are a lot of smoothie aficionados out there, I've got questions: When you make a smoothie, how much do you drink as one "meal"? And, how do you save leftovers? This is confusing for me since smoothies are sliders, so I'd appreciate your input. Thanks!

I had gastric bypass on June 20th. My surgeon seems to have a VERY different plan than most others. I was on clear liquids for 48 hours then was allowed full liquids and purees "as tolerated". I keep reading about the different stages everyone is on. My plan in all my paperwork says that after 2 weeks I can start regular food. So far this has been a breeze. The first few days after surgery were a big tough but I'm feeling great. Has anyone else have a plan that advances to real food this fast? I'm still planning on taking it slow and chewing like my life depends on it but I'm so ready to be eating normal food again.

Hello, I am 6 weeks post op and should be able to eat small meals per last meeting. I take maybe 3 bites and feel like I am going to get sick. Only thing I can really be ok with is shakes ( tired of!) And pudding. Anyone else has this happen and will it stop? Thanks! Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

  26. My bariatric binder that my surgeon's office gives you cautions you away from adding in fruits to your shakes in your post-op diet. I'm curious... I've started drinking the shakes the my doctor's office sells just to make sure I like the taste (and to try them with Almond Milk vs. Water, in the blender vs. a shaker bottle, etc) and I added in a banana to the chocolate shake. It's seriously delicious. I'm a little sad that I can't have it in my post-op diet. How many of you add in a fruit to your shakes when you're in the maintaining stage? I know that a lot of fruit is not a great idea, but I'm curious if it would be okay for a treat every now and then (as opp…

One of my bigger challenges is eating healthy when I go to the movies. I do like to snack while watching a movie, so I'll usually bring a bag of nuts, roasted edamame and maybe a few pieces of dark chocolate in a zip top baggie to munch on. Another snack I take is berries. It annoys me that the snack choices at the movie theater are so poor. Would love to hear thoughts on what you do when going to the movie theater to stay on track.

I am 5 months post-op and down 80 pounds so far. I am jogging on the weekends and hitting the gym for 4-5hrs a week. I am still slowly dropping 1-3 pounds a week. I feel as If I can do more and better if I focus more than I am on my diet. I am not following any certain type diet (low carb, keto, weight watchers...) but I do try and stay away from carbs as much as possible. I want to eat healthy and as clean as possible but still be able to not be tied to an app and a calculator. I am really bad at tracking my food via apps, to be honest I probably haven’t done this in two months. What are your favorite diet plans? Why do you like them? I have 60 pounds left to…

  34. Hi y'all. I thought it would be fun to post a real or theoretical day of eating that allows you to get your protein in at the individual level you're at presently. So like, if you're eating 1/4c per meal and have a protein requirement of 60g of protein for the day--what are you eating. Likewise, if you have a 1/2c per meal allowance and an 80g of protein requirement--what do you eat. Maybe if we do enough of these posts they will be great references for people as they work their way up from the initial 1oz=1/8c per meal, all the way up to 1c=8oz per meal! I know it will sure help me. I'll start by giving a hypothetical example for me when I'm 6 weeks out--on a "good day".…

Hi, everyone. I'm close to 6 months out. My last visit with the doctor was in March. He recommended only one meal a day. I have no protein goals or calorie goals or other guidelines other than to stop eating before I'm full. It's the thought that counting calories puts one back in 'diet' mode when we should just learn to eat naturally, intuitively. Naturally, I'm hungry more than once per day! I've found in attempt to stave off hunger, I'm grabbing less than healthy (aka: quick) snacks that are lower cal that a meal might be. And I don't feel I'm losing as much as I should. I've tossed around the same 3 pounds for almost a month now. I've found this r…

Ok, for a while it was oatmeal with dried cherries and pecans. Had to eat it all the time. Loved it. (still do, but getting bored) Lately I want refried beans with cheese melted on top and a bunch of salsa. Not really craving the tortilla, so don't bother with it. But the beans! Love them lately. Wonder what that's about? Sometimes I also want avacado, lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro and lime. But for an on the go lunch? Beans with cheese and salsa...has been really good lately. Never would have eaten this before. Cravings have changed so much in the last six months. Weird!

I know they have a lot of protein but are higher in fat and sodium but those are two things I'm not directly focused on. I want to buy a canister of Flamin' Hot Peanuts and was curious to know if any of you would do the same?

This came to mind after I had a terrible experience with tuna at work today. It was the Starkist pouches. I’ve had one before but this pouch was a bit dryer and it did not settle well at all. My supervisor had to give me some time to recoup. I also had an absolutely awful experience with salmon. Never again will I go near what was one of my favorite foods. White meat chicken is a no go too.

I’m trying to reach that 60-80 protein goal but I feel like with that I’m getting too many calories. Today I had 920 calories, yesterday 850. I don’t eat anything I’m not supposed to but the weight just isn’t coming off like I want to. I’m 7 weeks out, what was your carb/calorie goal at that point?

  43. So I am almost a year out in April. I'm am female and 48. My hair seems to be thinning now. I have , unintentionally, stopped taking my bariatric vitamins as we were moving out of state, selling our house, getting settled, getting new jobs etc. Then there was the added stress. I'm wondering if it is just that I stopped taking my vitamins and my protein has reduced or if this is just the way it's going to be. Period. Any thoughts, suggestions, or advice welcome. I am starting my protein shakes back up.

I'm feeling very confused about this and just need to know exactly how much you all are eating after a year post op. Thanks!

I know leaner meat will be less calories and have more protein per ounce, does this make the leanest meat available the best option post op? I recently found myself able to incorporate meat again (beef and fish, waiting another week or two for chicken) Should I use medium fat meats for a few weeks as they're supposedly easier to eat and digest (ie 85/15) or just jump in with the leanest stuff

  48. I started regular foods a little over a week ago. I'll find something I really like, for example chicken, cheese, lean lunch meat and turkey burgers. I'll eat a few, they settle well and then I'm absolutely sick of them. I hate that it happens because I feel like I'm wasting food but my enjoyment will only last a few meals. The only thing I can eat on a consistent basis is beef jerky, Greek Yogurt and some soups so far.
