Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by mousecat88,

In my FB group, someone mentioned the need to occasionally shock your system, and people are recommending carbs or sweets. I have never been told this, and I stick to my plan 100%. Has anyone heard of the need to do this for any reason? To break a stall? It seems like cheating on this regimen is setting yourself for failure if you became overweight due to lack of control or moderation. I would never eat a brownie or cookie this early on - we are all 2-3 months out (or ever, unless it was bariatric friendly). Advice?

Hi my name is Monae and I had to vsg surgery in July and I was wondering what are the net carbs we are allowed to have during the day you know for the day I do anywhere from 40 G to 60 G of carbs but I need to know the net carbs on the vsg surgery thank

Been cruising the interwebs looking for future recipes. Came across these noodles that are essentially carb free. Anyone tried them? They look like an answer to prayer to me!!!

  4. Started by chattycat,

Ok, I know post op we should limit our Food portions to 1/2 to 3/4 cup for RNY but my question is, do we need to limit our liquids to the same amount? If I drink 2 cups of a protein smoothie for Breakfast or have two cups of coffee is that wrong? I’m not sure if liquids should be portioned out as well? I am 6 months Post Op.

Has anyone tried recipes form Fresh Start: Bariatric Cookbook by Sarah Kent? Are the recipes good?

  8. So I'm not really back on caffeine, but I had such a jones today for a cuppa joe after lunch. So I poured about a quarter cup of coffee, added a no sugar-added hot chocolate and some milk. SO TASTY! And then, miracle of miracles, about an hour later BAM! Clean bowels!!!!!!! I am ecstatic! What a relief! So tired of microscopic bunny turds! Wahooo!!!!

I saw these on "The Facebook". Have y'all tried them? Are they just thin, deli slices of cheese? https://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/a25804784/folios-low-carb-cheese-wraps/

I am almost 5 months out and I just began this week eating sunflower seeds that are still in the shell. I have been trying to only eat the seed, but am worried that some of the shell may have been ingested. I am now feeling anxious that I may have somehow done damage to my pouch. Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a way to know if you have damaged your sleeve in any way? I am just concerned how easy is it to damage the sleeve with what you eat. Trying very hard to eat right, but I do sometimes fall backward and eat things I feel are not the best for my new diet. Thank you in advance for all feedback.

I've heard good things about the Instant Pot and am thinking of getting one. There are just 2 of us at home. Should I get the 6 quart or 3 quart? If we want to cook a roast is the bigger size better? Any tips or advice? Thanks!

Hi! I'm new to the forum, so nice to meet you all. I had gastric bypass when I was 22 (12 years ago). When I first had the surgery, I received very little guidance about my new post-op diet. There was no support group, there was no eating plan, there was just...nothing. I dropped from 264 lbs to 160 lbs, but slowly began gaining and am now at 213. At the time, there was very little information about how to make the best of my gastric bypass, and I almost feel like I was cheated the results I could have had, had I been given the resources that are available today. And granted, I take the blame for much of it, but I'm also just...lost. I'm terrified of the weigh…

I had gastric bypass surgery match 6, 2017. I have regained. Since may 2018, I've gained about 35lbs. I am setting my mind to do this. I should be down to 250 by now. Anyone else regain?

  14. Started by xMissyChrissy,

Hi everyone! I'm brand new, and I just had my surgery last week. I'm on the full liquid diet, which includes yogurt. I am having a really hard time finding a low fat yogurt with artificial sweeteners. I tried the Oikos Triple Zero, and even though I could tolerate it pre-op, it makes me extremely nauseous now. Does anyone have any recommendations of yogurt brands or styles? All of the Greek yogurt brands I have found seem to have like 6-7 grams of sugar, which I believe it too much, and haven't found any that are artificially sweetened (aside from Triple Zero). Thanks!

So I'm about halfway through my last week of the post-op liquid diet and the plan was to be placed on soft foods after seeing the Dietitian on the 3rd. The issue I'm having is the post-swallow pain I'm still feeling with just plain liquids. If clear liquids or protein shakes still cause pain, will I be able to transition to soft foods? The pain radiates downward, retrosternal to Left Upper Quadrant, 30-45 seconds after swallowing. I'm not gulping, still just small sips at a time. Cold liquids are really bad, warm ones not so much and of course I'm not using straws. The pain dissipates about 30 seconds later, but happens every time. Really looking forward to some actual fo…

Wednesday I’ll be able to transition to a regular diet, hallelujah! Trader Joe’s is my ultimate favorite grocery store and I’d like some healthy suggestions, what others may eat from there that is low carb and Bariatric approved. I don’t like fish or pork. Thanks for any suggestions!

Just wondering what the general consensus was about LiquaCel packets. I travel a lot for work and these look convenient, just wondering about taste, flavors, etc. Want to have something that mixes readily with bottled water that isn't a shake or pudding. Thanks!

hi im morbidly obese and cannot get any surgery so i would like help with trying a post op diet. i understand that it would be hard because sometimes the hunger can be greatly reduced or gone with the surgeries for some people but i wouldnt be any more hungry trying a post op diet as im always hungry now no matter what i try. im looking for general instructions as i know i would have gotten some with a surgery so it wouldnt need to be exact in this case. so basically what would be the amounts (volume) of what foods and how frequent and maybe a calorie amount? I'm only 5 days post op, and doing well with liquids and protein needs. My problem is muscle spasms in my lower abdomen and calves. I'm adding Gatorade for electrolytes, but struggling to get much activity in. Any suggestions?

Hello , Im new here . Been using Baritastic app for a while . I'm post op gastric sleeve ; done on 10/9/18 ; I try to eat home baked fries , or green bean and tomato salad , triple zero yogurt , scrambled egg , chicken tenders . Not all at once , but those are some things I eat . Problem is ? They sometimes stay down ? Other times they don't . I have trouble feeling full sometimes even now . I chew 20 times , even eat with left hand to slow down my eating . How do you guys know how much you can tolerate portion size wise ? Thank You [emoji16]

I know having seasonings and spices are fine after surgery, but what about serious hot sauces? I asked my nutritionist about it, and she was like "oh, curry powder and red pepper flakes are fine!" No, no. I meant like Trinidad Scorpion/Carolina Reaper Death Sauce kind of hot sauce. Start-crying-when-you-smell-it hot sauce. Currently, I don't get any upset stomach from any level of the Scoville. I douse crazy hot sauce on pretty much everything. Anyone a hot sauce junkie? Can you tolerate it post-op?

Hello everyone! I had a gastric sleeve in April 2015 - everything went well for a while but then the weight loss stopped! I am now gaining and it is scary. I lost about 40 pounds total but now have gained about 10. Any tips on how to get back to the loss again? I watch my intake and work hard at getting the protein in. Any thoughts, ideas or recommendations will help.

  23. Hey friends, I'm thinking about my Christmas menu. It'll just be me and a friend this year and I'll be about 2 months post-op. My favorite Christmas food (at least for my family) is corn casserole - you know, the one with whole kernel corn, creamed corn, jiffy, butter, sour cream, and cheese. I know I don't want to eat that right now (or maybe ever - too much fat/butter and I haven't had anything carb-y like jiffy corn bread mix yet), plus I don't want to make a big pan of it just for two people, one of whom (me) can only eat about a tablespoon full. So, does anyone have any ideas on how to make a single serving of something kind of similar, but lighter? I've be…

  24. Hello my fellow sleevers, I was doing so good finally with my water & protein intake and now i developed gout in both my feet, It seems like my protein intake is the cause of this, Which leads me to my next question what should I consume on a daily basis. I'm currently 2 1/2 months out of surgery and im doing great 95 lbs down since pre op. Bariatric doc has me on 90 grams of protein and im limited to 40-50 carbs daily.... But now that i'm fighting gout i started eating fruits to fight my uric acid but fruits = carbs...... not sure how to beat it or what diet to follow. Any suggestions ???

Can someone in layman's terms explain intermittent fasting to me? Because I already eat all of my food within an 8 hour window each day, so I am confused about the "fasting" part. Am I already apparently intermittently fasting by sticking to this 8 hour window? I eat between 9ish-5ish every day. I looked through the existing thread for IF'ers and I don't really understand the difference between... just eating between a certain timeframe and the 16:8 stuff or whatever. Also, when is this supposed to be healthy for you, technically?

  26. Started by austin2622,

Im eating 3-5oz of food about every 4-hrs Im getting in between 600-900 calories a day. Is this normal for 5 1/2 ,weeks post-op from sleeve surgery?

  27. Started by Kgkev02,

Hello all, I am new here. I had my surgery November 8th 2017, had a wonderful surgeon and great staff, I love my post op weight, still have about 16 lbs to go for my personal goal weight. I ran across some one talking about sliders and triggers mentioning that crackers popcorn are trigger foods. What exactly are they and how do they affect us as sleevers? I must admit I absolutely love rosemary crackers and have eaten them with some cheese and grapes for an actual meal. Anyone out there can comment on this for me?

  28. Started by FluffyChix,

I borrowed this idea from another site. But to be fair, it's a concept that is not new to the low carb/keto community. Atkins '72 had you shoot for your daily protein goal and to keep your carbs (whole, non-net carbs) to about 10g or less per day (loosely). If you can't do <10g of carbs per day, then try to keep them as low as possible and definitely do NOT exceed 20g of whole non-net carbs. So those of you who know me, know I get bored with my same ol' same ol' routine! So I felt like mixing things up and tightening up the carb wagon a bit. I'm eating a crap ton of carbs for my body (about 50-60g per day whole which comes out to about 30-40g net after fiber subt…

Hi, i use to love coconut water befor surgery, would anybody enlighten me, does it considered as clear liquids for sleeve post op diet ?

  30. I am having trouble finding many items in the bariatricpal store that does not have whey in it. Anyone here familiar with any products on there that are whey-free? I've clicked through a bunch with no luck, except for the sloppy joes.

I know it's way early, but when was everyone here able to start eating lettuce tomatoes and other raw salad veggies after gastric bypass?

  32. Started by audaciousmarie,

Hi everyone, I am currently in the Soft Food phase of my post op diet (I was sleeved on October 18th). Before surgery, I did enjoy Halo Top Ice Cream. My question is: At what point can I have some Halo Top? (If at all). Would it be considered a “soft food” or should I just wait until I’m on solids?

  33. Started by notmyname,

Hey all, I've been making Eggface's ricotta bake, but haven't figured out what size pan works. A regular loaf pan is too large. A mini loaf pan is too small. I feel like Goldilocks here. Any advice on what size pan to use? Thanks!

  34. I've been drastically increasing my carbohydrates to put on muscle and lean body mass. I've been eating a ton of oatmeal but unfortunately oatmeal is totally a slider for me. What are some great healthy carbs that you've been eating that keep you full instead of leaving you starving? And I'm not looking for low carb things, I'm trying to get around 250g of carbs a day in. Thanks!

I had surgary feb 5th i lost 80lbs but been at this for 2 months I was just told by some one that im supposed to be eating every 3 hours ,is that true and if so what do you all eat ?

  36. Started by notmyname,

I start soft foods tomorrow. I am going to try some tilapia, but the frozen fillets are far too large for me to eat. I tried to cut it in half, but my knife couldn't cut the frozen fillet. Anyone have any tips? I'd like to just thaw what I'm planning to cook because I'm not a huge fan of leftover fish and I'm not sure how long frozen fish will last in the fridge. Thanks!

Hello Everyone, Im new here & I hope someone can help. I’m 6 days post-op and I can’t seem to get all of my liquids in. It’s so hard for me to get used to only taking 1 or 2 sips at a time. I practiced so much during pre-op but it’s much different now that I’m sleeved. I know it takes time to heal and I’m still swollen. I just feel a little down that I’m not doing better. My last day in the hospital, I finished almost all of my water and was eating broth as well. Now when I eat broth, I feel full after a few spoonfuls. I’m using toddler spoons, btw. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi! I was just sleeved on 11/12/18. I was just seeing if anyone else was sleeved that day or close to it and wanted to know of any challenges you've faced so far this first week!?

  39. Started by samantha814,

I was sleeved 7/4/17, so I am a little over a year out. I was sleeved in Mx, so I haven't seen my bariatric team since my surgery (as far as post op checkups, etc.) . My weight loss has slowed down quite a bit and I have been between 173-178 for the past few months (30 years old, 5'8 and trying my best to exercise 3-5 times a week). I was hoping that some people who were about a year out could tell me how they are doing and what their approx. macros are. I have been trying to follow bariatric keto for a few months...but it really doesn't seem to be a good fit for me. I had the ketone strips and joined a special "bariatric keto" group on Facebook and they provided me with …

Hello everyone! I was sleeved on July 30th 2018. I’m down 62ibs since then. My weight loss has been going down only about 1-3ib a week and I try to go to the gym 3-5 times a week mostly focusing on weights as cardio is my enemy. I am curious though, what do you guys like to eat for meals and snacks?? In addition how much can you eat in one setting? Do you measure by oz or cup? I don’t necessarily need recipes yet but any helpful general food and snack ideas are greatly appreciated

I'm 6 weeks post-op, on Monday I will be 7 weeks post-op. My surgeon said I can start solids, I need ideas. I get scared to start them.

  42. I have discovered that I have no interest in pizza or bacon. I never thought that would be possible but my tastes have changed and I have no cravings and no desire for either. I'm not complaining, I am just surprised. I love it!

  43. Started by Gr8Mom,

So...I didn’t enjoy the aftertaste of crystal light and light type drinks before surgery...and I really can’t stand it now. I do enjoy ice cold tap water. Are there any alternatives to this for drinking post surgery. Sometimes, I jut need a good drink!

  44. Started by HealthierMe2017,

So Wednesday marks a full 2 weeks since surgery. Per my surgeon, I can’t have soft or puréed foods until the 15th.. but I want to eat! I just want to chew something but can only have broths and protein shakes. Did any one else experience this? Any suggestions?

  45. Started by GreenTealael,

What do you think? Do you agree/disagree?

  46. HI all, I am almost 4 weeks post op from a sleeve, and on mushies, I don't know how I feel about this, but I ate half a sandwich ( no crust), it had chicken, avocado and lite mayo, and i chewed it till it was all mushy. it was so good, and my stomach didn't hurt, gargle or give me reflex ect. do you think I have overdone it? I have struggled with the mushy stage with reflux and pain, then did this which I thought would cause issues, and nothing, thoughts anyone?

  47. So tonight is the end of clear liquids (stage 1). Tomorrow I start on full liquids and can start having protein shakes. Besides the fake sugar aftertaste one of the things I don't like about them is the frothy or bubbly they get when mixed in a blender. Not premixed, I rather make my own with powder. I can't imagine the swallowing those frothy bubbles is good for the air in belly situation either. I was having the same problem with adding flavorless powder to my broth this week so I started just shaking the contents in a bottle. It still froths up or bubbles up but it doesn't last long. My question is if there is any way to avoid this happening? Can I do it in the bl…
