Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by birthygirl,

I have always been one to drink a large amount of fluid. And with this heat (100+ here) it makes me even more thirsty. I always feel like I drink too fast. I'm only one week post op. Could this stretch my sleeve? And how do I make myself slow down?

  2. Started by FireEMT710,

So today I made butternut squash soup. 1 stick of butter, 2 butternut squash, 2 32 oz containers of chicken stock. I don't have surgery until 11/23, but I decided to freeze some of it in muffin pans in just shy of 1/2 cup portions. I have no clue how to know if that will be ok after surgery? I know the butter wasn't a good choice, and probably could have done fat free (is that a thing??) stock. How do I figure out the nutritional value of it? Websites I've found want me to know how much soup it made. I didn't measure it before I ate some for lunch and supper and the kids had some too.

  3. I just had my Gastric Bypass on Jan 12th, and my Dr. started me on ready-to-drink protein shakes in the hospital. They had the brand "Oh Yeah" in vanilla. I loved them. I got home spent $65 on the only web-site I could find them in stock, and I received them this morning the 17th. They taste terrible to me!! I had been trying to drink the Fairlife with 24grams of protein, but could barely get them down. Well, now that the "Oh Yeah" are here they taste terrible??? What is wrong with me? I feel like I just don't know what to do. I can't afford to waste money like that and now I feel like I have to drink them, but they aren't setteling on my stomach like they were, a…

Hi! First time poster here. I’m on week 3 of my liquid diet and I’m struggling so much. I haven’t lost weight in about a week, and I’m not sure why. I’m back to my normal cardio and yoga workouts every day, I drink way more than 64oz of water. My real issue is food, I am getting so nauseous (even with the anti-nausea meds) with all of the sweet protein shakes, etc. The only thing that I can eat without being nauseous is savory soups with added protein (and all of the recipes my dietitian gave me are low fat cream based) but I can only do about two cups a day of that. I basically don’t eat except for the one bowl of soup a day and one protein water. Does anyone h…

  5. Hey y'all! Anyone and everyone is welcome to jump in and join us. This is the Intermittent Fasting DAily Menu/Results/Accountability Thread. It's where a few of us (or many) are going to log in and encourage each other while we experiment with our own IF plans. You can list or talk about anything--not just your food. I look forward to adding in HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and core exercises to my walking plan while practicing IF. So expect to hear about that too. hehe I expect some of us will talk about the known IF side-effects like insomnia, circadian rhythm disturbance, etc. It's all good! Let's hack this IF mofo! mkay? There is not any 1 specif…

  6. Started by LJW,

I'm almost 2 months out from my sleeve. I have lost 42 pounds. The problem is that I am finding that a lot of foods taste yucky to me now. I totally never expected that. Even foods that I once loved now taste "chemically" to me. I have given up on lots of foods altogether. My surgeon says he hears this all the time but no good explanation. Any insights?

I am in the liquid stage soon coming to the pureed stage. What portion sizes do you do for each meal ? It seems like a obvious question but my diet plan wasnt very clear on it. It mentions to measure out ur meals ... I dont feel much of a restriction to be honest, I just stop myself because I am afraid of puking. I imagine a couple of months out measuring meals is gonna be real important with my hunger coming back. thanks.

  8. Started by nolo56788,

No responses really required but I have fallen off really hard (eating the wrong things, bigger portion sizes, etc), so I'm using this post as a means to put out in the universe to get myself back on track! Might need to do a soft reset to get back in the habit. Mind over matter people!!

  9. Started by Summer32,

Hi! im three days post op and the protein water I liked before surgery makes me want to throw up now. I don’t know what it is but I feel like it tastes weird? Are my taste buds changing? I’ve been drinking other protein shakes but they’re not the same “level” according to my nutritionist as the protein water with the whey protein isolate which Im worried could screw up my progress. But at the same time I cannot drink the protein water so I just don’t know! I could only get up to 50g protein yesterday. I’m also exhausted and still feel a lot of pain. I have been napping every day. Is this normal? Am I supposed to have more energy? I went out to the store with m…

  10. Hello. I am due to have surgery on 8/7/20 and I am about to look into some products for the clear protein stage right after surgery when you’re home but not ready for full liquids. I tried Isopure clear and found it revolting. I was able to get it down by holding my nose but I would love to hear some of your suggestions for this stage. Thanks!

  11. Started by jc-17,

Hi guys, I’m about three months post op and I’m struggling to stick to plan. My hunger/thirst seems to still be off and it’s getting harder to make myself drink enough water and get my protein in. Plus, I’m getting really bored with my protein options. Texture has been a big deal since surgery and certain protein shakes as well as yogurt makes me sick. And when I do want to eat, I want something that is “worth it” taste wise and find it much harder to force down the foods that I’m supposed to be eating. I was doing good on weight loss at the beginning but I’ve stalled and I know it’s because I’m not getting enough water or protein. I’m afraid of staying where I’m at …

Hi - I'm 7.5 weeks post surgery (sleeve) and feeling pretty good so far. My big worry is I do not seem to be able to tolerate any vegetables or fruit well, unless blended. Both my nutritionist & surgeon have told me not to worry about this as long as I'm getting my protein in (I always hit goal) & take my vitamins. This just doesn't sound sustainable, they've not given me any timescale for such a diet. Any suggestions welcome. It feels wrong not to be getting my greens

I just started my 3rd week post op and now on pureed foods. I was hoping someone might know about eating oatmeal? I was told I can eat Cream of Wheat but I'm not sure about oatmeal. Anyone know?

  14. Started by Judy090,

I'm so tired and stress, it's been 2 years and I still can not eat properly, I feel blotting and disgust in every meal. I can't go to restaurants anymore because I end up vomiting or with lots of acids even testing a bit, I guess is because of the fat used?. The only thing that I can eat are beans, rice, soups I been surviving eating bread but end up gaining weight. I became vegan because I can not eat meat anymore... I don't know what to do. What's your experience?

  15. Started by brebrexoxo,

Hello everyone! How long after surgery do u start on the purée or soft food stage

  16. Started by shawttyy,

I have to eat 2 meals of protein. Im 3 weeks post op I'm over eating ricotta and fish can anyone share anything that I could eat please.

  17. Started by Jessica Wheeler,

I'm miserable when it comes to eating.. Or should I say drinking broth... I took it upon my self to start on pureed foods a week early or else I would've died of starvation. However I'm doing pretty good.. I've started walking up to a mile and a half everyday. I had surgery on Nov. 3, 2020. Before surgery my weight was 245 now I'm 225... I'm sure I lost some weight pre-op due to the 2 week liquid diet. Anyway the Journey continues.

I used to drink regular coffee all of the time. I haven’t drank it since I’ve been in this process. Has anyone drank regular coffee after an RNY?

Hello all, What are your best low carb bread options? Costco in so cal only had one and it was still 12 net carbs per slice.

Hi had my gastric bypass on post day 5. Roughly a week left of liquid diet. I am finding it difficult with head hunger. Wishing for solid foods right now can't concentrate sometimes. I am having soup, milk, yoghurt, broth pretty much . Any suggestions with things that can help ? Anyone finished the liquid stage earlier cause they couldn't deal with it ? Thanks

  21. Started by Jsteelecat,

I’m on a liquid diet for the first week. I did fine with protein shakes the first couple days but now I’m feeling I need more. I know of broth and Jello but what other ideas do you guys have for a liquid diet?

  22. Started by JuicyJenny,

I’m 7 weeks post op and I’m bored with food. I’ve started to do protein shakes more often because I’m uninterested in eating. Has anyone else experienced this?

  23. Started by Jen637,

Hi friends! This is my first time posting/asking a question. I am 8 weeks post VSG surgery and I'm struggling with food. I know this isn't a new story and everyone struggles in some way. I find myself struggling to force myself to eat. I don't feel hunger (that I know of) yet I feel nauseous when I *do* eat and nauseous when I *do not* eat. I think my sense of smell is heightened as well so any cooking that I have to do or even opening up the refrigerator is causing a nauseous sensation as well. Has anyone experienced this? What did you do to overcome this? Thankfully I'm still losing but I know the loss won't continue if I can't get my metabolism kick started. Any…

My first gastric bypass I was told that I cannot eat soup after surgery. However I have no such limitations this time around. I also see many soups in the store. I was wondering how people felt about eating chunky soups after surgery.

Does anyone have problems eating salmon (fatty fish) and/or avocados after roux en y?

  28. So I had VSG 3 years ago, and my BF just had the same procedure done 2 weeks ago (different surgeon/hospital). I feel like he is not following his surgeons guidelines, and I'm not sure how much to worry/comment on things I observe (we live together). After my surgery I don't think I ate "real" food until 1 month out (starting with eggs and other really soft options). He is 2 weeks out and eating salmon, chicken, beef, etc. (mostly from restaurants where it's questionable how they really prepare the food (from a nutrition standpoint). Per his surgeons protocol he should only be doing pureed. Also, I know everyone is different, but I was NEVER hungry until about …

Does anyone else have trouble getting enough water in while at work? I'm in an "essential" position meaning I never got to work from home during covid so I've been dutifully going in to work every day. That's not a big deal really as my workplace is doing a pretty good job keeping everyone safe and healthy. However most of my day (>90%) I spend working in a lab where food and drinks are prohibited. The closest I can keep my water bottle is on a little table near the front door. When things aren't too busy it isn't so bad for me to regularly step away from the bench and walk over for a sip. The problem lately though is that we are stupid busy and I find myself with less…

How do you get in enough protein for the day when you can only eat 1/4-1/2 cup at a time?

  32. Started by GivinItMyALL,

I am not post-op yet, but I am preparing I got a Dannon Light & FIT yogurt today to see what it was like. I am used to full-fat, regular sugar yogurts, which I enjoy. THIS, however, was WAY too sweet (I assume the artificial sweetener makes it that way.) Has anyone put some type of flavoring (SF syrups in small amounts or something similar) into plain yogurt, and is it palatable for someone who *doesn't* generally like plain yogurt? I dunno if I will be able to choke down the pre-made SF yogurts Especially when I see most folks think things are too sweet post-op. I think it is too sweet NOW.

  33. Started by MichelleinWNY,

I am going into week 2 and I can start eating soup. I am planning on making my own. I bought a cookbook for food but many of their soups seem to have cheese added. Should I being consuming cheese at this stage? Or should I just subtract this ingredient?

  35. Started by Stacia143,

I had RNY Bypass Sept. 30th. I am feeling great! I was sent home on a liquid diet (strained cream soups, broths, yogurts, puddings, protein shakes, jellos) to last 2 weeks. I see my nutritionist on the 15th. I was told I would be comfortable eating 1/4 cup. Honestly, my liquid diet isn's cutting it. I am able to eat 1 cup of cream soup comfortably and still left feeling hungry. I am not feeling comfortably full, at all, and it is driving me crazy! I am getting all of my recommended proteins and fluids in. But, I am dying for something with more substance. I have heard of so many struggling to get fluids in and never feeling hungry, that I am feeling frustrated with…

I'm having huge cravings and the only reason I'm not giving into them is because I don't want to hurt my pouch. Just had GBS and I'm looking for alternative liquid/puree options for me to get through my favorite comfort food season!

So I've had these "episodes" of all of a sudden feeling really ill. Read all my symptoms and I have the symptoms of being hypoglycemic. I read it can happen more commonly in bariatric surgery patients . Has anyone else developed this?!

  40. Started by Itsmehab,

Hey everyone, So I have surgery set for 9/03/2020. I was looking through the packets that my dr and nutritionist sent me home with to make sure I get everything prior. I have already ordered vitamins and I was told not to buy to much before because you don’t know what you will stomach well after. Well after looking at the packets I see where they have a protein goal but not really like a diet plan for me to follow each week. I was hoping for like a breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner type of food plan for the first couple weeks after surgery breakdown of what to eat. They did give me like a list of 4 things I can have each week but I was hoping for something …

I’m 9 days post op and struggling big time. I hate everything. I’m tired of the sweet flavored sf popsicles, sf gaterade, sf propel, and protein shakes. I’m sick of them!!!! Pre-op, I developed an adversion to broth, regular, bone, vegetable you name it. Thinking about them makes me queasy. Post op I developed an adversion to sf jello. Now I am starting to develop an adversion to protein shakes because they are so sweet tasting and I’m sick of them. I’d rather just not eat anything to be honest but i know that’s not going to help. Worst of all, my surgeon requires a 4 week liquid diet after surgery. I’m just feeling really defeated, regretful, angry, depressed annoyed. I …

Hello! I had gastric bypass surgery 18 months ago. All was fine until my hypothyroidism turned into Hyperthyroidism, now I can’t seem to stop losing weight. What are some foods I could add that could help either maintain or gain a couple pounds? Thanks!

  43. Started by nolo56788,

I'm about a month out and my nutritionist said I may be able to move to regular foods! I'm still going to keep up good eating habits but rice is kryptonite haha. Has anyone tried the Right Rice brand? or is a veteran and can deduce if this would be a safe alternative to rice that's okay to eat post-op?

  44. Started by Isabelmonster,

Kinda weird question but I know breads are a big no no because of the carbs and it expands in the stomach but I wanted to know if you guys have handled pita well? I’m about 9-10 months out and I have yet to try pita.

Hi I’m new to this website. Didn’t know it even existed. So happy I ran across my accident. I don’t know about y’all but any food/foods I eat gives me gas something awful. I see that this website sells their own food. Does this food give you gas? Thanks in advance for answering my question. Lena B.

I realise this is maybe not the best attitude to have one week post-op - but I would feel so much better about this if I knew that one day, when I'm healthy, I can enjoy the occasional bit of fast food like everyone else. Can people who have had a bypass eat a McDonalds if they want to?

I know I posted something similar before but I made it very specific. General question-did anyone have issues taking their regular meds after surgery (even after splitting and crushing!) and did it go away? What did you do to lessen the blow? (I've tried taking them with a protein drink to little avail.) I'm sicker than a dog every time I take my meds.

Hello! I am 20 months post op and lost over 100 lbs. I make my own salad dressing and have it every day. I also track everything on the Baritastic app. How can I get the nutritional value of something homemade?
