Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by Bianca S.,

Thoughts on rice cakes? I use to love them with PB and a couple raisins on top

  2. Started by RowdyR3b3l18,

Question for everyone. A lot of times I am on the road for hours working. My question is that in times when I do not have a chance to go home and have a meal would steamed chicken be ok from a Chinese restaurant? I know of course no sauce but wonder what everyone’s option is on this. Would imagine it would be ok but just curious.

  3. Literally like I miss broccoli and salads and basically all my green veg and regular veg!! When were you guys able to take in the greens? Also which is your fave now after weightlifting loss surgery

  4. It occurs to me that not all of us are foodies, born with an innate desire to cook and try new recipes! Many of us got to the morbidly obese ball by eating fast food from drive thrus, or delivery meals. Still others shop in the frozen pre-made food isle and love Stouffer's Mac n Cheese and Stouffer's Lasagna, and Banquet Fried Chicken entrees! Many of us, have very limited ability (especially in the early days of weight loss) to stand up while preparing food. And, then too--many of us are on either fixed incomes or have very limited money for food--even though we might have been guilty pre-surgery of buying tons of craptastic food from the grocery store. So shew! Lon…

I need some meal ideas. I am stuck and need to break my stall I have fallen back into some old habits but trying to get back. I know eating bread has not helped me. A friend of mine said she cant eat bread but not this girl- my new tummy doesn't seem to mind. One good thing is if I have too much sugar I get sick so that makes me not eat a lot. I am looking for some ideas. I love yogurt and I tend to eat that often for breakfast. I got burnt out on eggs a long time ago. I need to cut my carbs down. Anyone tried intermittent fasting? I am wondering if that would help break this stall. Stephanie

I bought the BariatricPal Variety Pack protein candy bars and had the Rocky Road one yesterday and IT WAS SO GOOD. AND IT MADE ME SO VIOLENTLY ILL. lol. I *knew* it probably would because of the whey proteins, but it was heavenly. And *almost* worth it. I ended up sweating for 2 hours and puking. So, maybe not. Anyone know of any NON-WHEY chocolate goodies we can have? Soy-based?? Obviously low-carb, preferably high protein. Low-carb soy anything is so hard to find!

  7. What are your top foods for high nutritional value yet for smaller volume? I still have a premier shake to help get in protein. I am also sautéing 1-1.5 cups of spinach with an egg to get more iron and fiber. I have nuts or nut butters to help with protein and increase my calories for maintenance. I have not tired chia seed but plan to soon.

    Started by Guest,

I'm really not sure I'm watching these areas carefully(protein, Carbs & fat). I feel like I'm "winging" it and the uncertainty has me questioning things. I'm down 41 pounds in 8 weeks despite bowel issues or should I say the lack thereof. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

  9. Started by lvidacovich,

I saw my surgeon and team last week and got some good info on calorie and carb limits and it gave me a great idea. I came up with a rule of thumb for my food. 10 calories per gram of protein and more protein than carbs and I can eat it! Why? I need 70 grams of protein and 700 calories a day so as long as I'm getting 1 gram of protein in with each 10 calories I eat it shouldn't be an issue! Carbs and Protein both have 4 calories per gram. If you have a food that has more carbs than protein then chances it it won't fit this rule of thumb. This won't work for everyone obviously but I wanted to share it as I know looking at nutrition facts can be daun…

  10. Started by Sweetthing,

Hey guys! So I finished the phase of full liquid and am now in the pureed protein phase. Looking for some recipe/food ideas. I’m basically still just having protein drinks, yogurt, soup and hummus. It’s just kinda boring lol. Thanks for the help!:)

  11. Due to the limited stomach capacity I am trying to eat the best nutritional foods with vitamins and minerals I can. Besides protein requirements what are some foods you eat to get the best nutritional bang for your buck? I still have a premier protein shake daily. I eat yogurt and spinach daily. I eat pumpkin seeds and or walnuts often too. I know a varied diet with different fruit and veggies is good but sometimes i want to just stick with something I know I will get a lot of nutrients from. I don't eat beans often and think maybe I should try to add some to my diet.

Dear all, Sorry if this was already discussed 100 times, the search option was not very helpful. What is the fool log app of your choice ( free or paid) Thank you so much ! Ruxa

  13. I'm struggling getting enough clear liquids in and already messing up day 1 as I thought protein was more important. When I sip the clears too quickly I get a pain the middle of my chest that radiates outward. I'm wondering how best to time this. Sure I can gradually sip, but it's prefer to just take half an ounce at a time if possible.

  14. Hello everyone Post surgery I've really started to enjoy my evening cups of tea I have some black tea bags laying around but I was wondering is it better to use green tea or is there an even healthier option out there. I'm using no sugar so I may have to go buy some Splenda or something like equal sachets. I put maybe an oz of soy milk with my tea or even sometimes all black tea.. I never really was into hot tea before surgery so it's good to find something satisfying with next to no calories my surgeon says caffeine is fine just no more than a few cups a day is best. Thank you.

  15. I feel at my age I should know this but I've never been in the position of having 1/2 a grocery store's roast chicken left over. I took 1/2 of one breast/white meat and made pureed chicken salad. Am not feeling up to doing more right now - feeling clammy and dizzy but very PROUD that I made something!! And got the very pureed chicken salad into my 2 ounce disposable containers. Have SIX and 1/2 from just one side of the chicken! BOOM! Mind blown!! Any quick tips on whether I should slice the other part of the breast up, dice it..add broth to it..or anything that needs to be done as a prelude to freezing it? Also, freeze in Tupperware or a freezer Ziploc s…

My surgery was a week ago today. I also found out that it made me lactose intolerant. I am struggling with not having anything but Fairlife Milk and water all day every day. I know I can have broth and SF popcycles but I have a hard enough time getting in enough milk for my protein. How have other people combatted this? All I can think about is how good something with flavor would taste!

I'm going on my first vacation since my vgs surgery and it's an all inclusive resort. Are there any low calorie cocktails that I can drink? This will also be my first time drinking alcohol since my surgery 6 months ago-a little nervous and excited...

  18. I'm on several meds now that I got home yesterday, including some for helicobacter pylori, and I cannot find a way that doesn't leave a completely disgusting taste in my mouth trying to dissolve the meds in water or protein shakes. I'd love to hear any ideas you folks have.

  19. Started by mousecat88,

Just wanted to share these because they are the bomb. Sold on Amazon and comes in 3 flavors. The jalepeno ones are spicy. 21g protein!

  20. Started by aprilny,

I’m Post-op phase 2, liquid. My guidelines say I can have soups without pieces in it, but it also says no veggies. Does that include tomato soup? I REALLY wanna eat something other than broth and shakes...

Hi I was wondering during the purées stage if I could have Lump crab spinach dip puréed? Crab is high in protein and I’m scared to eat meat right now and honestly don’t have a craving for it. I tried Chick-fil-A grilled nuggets puréed and let’s say they don’t purée well.

  23. Started by KCgirl061,

Gah! I’m so excited about this I just had to share! I was browsing Pinterest last night and found a recipe for making cereal from a Quest bar! I adjusted the recipe to make in my air fryer. I took the temp down to 320° and checked it every 3 minutes instead of 4. Also skipped the parchment paper since the ‘cereal’ would be too light to properly weigh down the paper.

  24. I am 6 weeks post op, and I am able to incorporate regular foods into my diet, slowly. I can seem to get a clear answer. I use the Baritastic app to track my intake but I am never sure how many Net Carbs, Carbs, Sugar, Calories, Fiber, and Fats I should be my intake per day. Can anyone assist me with this one?

  25. Started by loridee11,

Can anyone recommend a good blender for the pureed stage - something that's not expensive like the vitamix but still works well?

  26. Started by evilpixie20,

I am on full liquids and 10 days post OP. I am having no issue eating/ drinking my soup. I just ate 7oz of cream potato soup (minus potato) no problem in like 5 to 10 minutes. I feel like I could keep going and not feel restricted. Same with water. I can do more than just tiny sips. Also I feel hungry all the time. Help me please. I had rny on 10/9/19 SW 289 and down to 261.

  27. Started by loridee11,

Hi all, What is your favorite clear liquid protein? I tried the Premier Protein fruit punch and it was WAY to sweet for my taste buds so I'm curious what others have liked. Thanks in advance! Lori

  28. Started by MariaPartyPantz,

I’ll be moving onto my stage/phase 3 soft food diet soon I noticed a lot of “bariatric recipes” use low fat cream cheese, wanted to know if anyone eats it and doesn’t or does have a problem with it?

  29. Started by Mrs. Hayes,

Has anyone out there dumped on popcorn? I'm almost 7 months out and still have LOTS of foods I've never tried post op and this is one of them. I fear dumping more than anything right now

  30. Started by NagathaChristie,

Monday I start my pureed stage of my post of diet. What was the first pureed meal you ate?

  31. My husband and I want to travel about 4 hours to Wichita starting Friday. Friday is also the day I can start my pureed diet. Am I stuck on liquids for a couple more days or is there anything I can take with me. I need to get some calories in, I have been losing very slowly this week.

  32. Started by ypease,

How many of you you have or did lay in supplies (nutritional items, vitamins, eat) prior to your surgery? Did you think this is a good or not so good idea? My surgery date isn't until 10/1/19, so I have plenty of time to figure this out. I just don't want to find myself purchasing unnecessary items. Any thoughts?

  33. So, I'm set to have surgery at the end of this month and I'm worried about what sugar-free options they will provide as I have an extreme sensitivity to aspratame. I know I can bring bouillon or broth easily enough as all I need is hot water, but I can't really bring my own gelatin or popsicles as they require to be chilled and I don't think that the hospital will do that for me. I plan to ask my dietician at my 2 week pre op appointment about this, but I was wondering if anyone had any issue at the hospital with food allergies and the clear liquid diet.

  34. I know that all of our tastes differ, but I’m just curious about what low sugar (5g or less) or sugar free beverages people have found that actually taste good. Especially with NO after taste?!

  35. Hey, y'all So, I am set to get my gallbladder out shortly due to many stones and sludge. (Yippee...) Being 8 weeks out from my bypass surgery, I am just starting to really feel like I am getting a good handle on this new way of eating/ planning food as it is right now. For those of you who have had your gallbladders removed, what changes did you notice/ need to make in eating? Did those changes, if any, resolve over time? Any tips or tricks? Thanks in advance for sharing!

I'm not much of a cooker and have been kind of winging it. I want to cook and freeze protein dishes. Any recommendations for small freezer type dish to use? I tried and searched but nothing came up. Thank you!

  37. Started by ashem,

Hi all! Any recommendations for food containers for lunch? Portion control is a must ??

  38. Started by KohakuSueda,

Every time I drink my protein shakes I feel like I’m going to throw up and it’s making it difficult to get my protein in. I got my sleeve 9/17 and I’m stressing. Anyone else have this issue? I tried the clear protein shakes, readymade, and powder and I can’t find one that doesn’t upset my stomach. Is this normal for gastric sleeve?

  39. Started by pkron,

I can't find an answer on how long to wait after a Gastric Sleeve to have a drink. I've seen answers from one month to six months to never. I will speak to my nutritionist tomorrow, but I was looking for a quicker answer because of a work event this evening.

  40. Started by AZhiker,

Just thought I'd throw this out, as it seems like a lot of fresh post op folks have trouble tolerating their water requirements. I have found myself gravitating more and more to warm liquids - herbal teas, rather than straight water. I do drink lots of water, but warm/hot tea seems to really settle well, if not better than plain water. Water sometimes feels like a rock landing in my pouch, and I am 8 months out. So just an idea to experiment with temperatures and teas, to see if some are more tolerable than others.

  41. Started by KohakuSueda,

I’m a week post op and my plans wants 80g A day of protein full liquids. Had anyone been able to do this? I feel like water is so much easier to drink than the protein shakes because they are so filling and I’m getting a little over 40g instead of 80.

  42. Started by mousecat88,

I ate half and the chocolate is super rich tasting so I put the rest in the fridge.

  43. How much protein, how many calories, and how many meals do you eat in a day?

  44. Hey ya'll, Trying to decide what to buy now that I have no restrictions. I've seen lots of deli meat and string cheese. I will still eat greek yogurt. But I want more ideas! Help!

  45. Started by Glower,

There are a lot of days where nothing is appetizing, or I'll take a few bites of something and it'll make me feel nauseous. Since I still don't get hungry (less than 3 months out, so my hunger hasn't come back really), it can be really hard to make myself eat. Because of this, I struggle with my protein intake A LOT. Shakes make the back of my throat burn (I've tried most of the premade brands that are approved by my program, as well as made my own with different powders). I can't get enough of a bar down for it to be effective. The protein waters feel chalky in my mouth and feel so gross (a lot of food is about texture for me). I've got the Liquicel protein nectar, …

  46. Started by Butterfly#7,

Of course I understand that one of the main challenges of achieving weight loss goals is changing or eliminating old habits. One of the habits I had since being a child is eating my favorite food or dessert with my favorite tv shows. Now that we are in the season of “Season Premiers” and the return of some of my favorite programs I still have the mindset that I need to have something special to eat while watching. So I have started to put an end time on when I eat to avoid this-I try to finish eating for the day by no later than 7pm. The excitement of watching the programs or movies just isn’t the same without that “special” treat.:(

  47. Started by levinme,

I'm on month out from surgery and found these little snacks balls to be super useful to have around and they keep for a long time. I mixed the following in a big bowel (you can play with the ratios of things as you like): * creamy peanut butter * oats * honey * vanilla protein powder Then ball them up into little balls and refrigerate. When you want a little snack; just grab one and pop in it! They travel well too for work and stuff.

  48. Started by Lynda486,

I have been looking at flavor extracts on Amazon and the choices are endless it seems. I am curious as to what flavor extracts does everyone like the best?

  49. Started by Butterfly#7,

One of the Medical Assistants at my surgeons office informed me that seafood is easier to digest than regular meats. So, I’m in the purée phase my husband bought me a crab cake. Let me tell you I was able to eat half of it! It was soo good, I will admit I probably should have only eaten a quarter because I was really full but I didn’t get heartburn or nadeau. I tried a piece of tilapia and what a horrible experience, it felt like it was stuck in my chest! This is when someone informed me that Tilapia is not real fish, so I guess I have to stick with “pure’ seafood. Has anyone else had success with seafood this early (only 3 weeks since gastric sleeve)?
