Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by Lbtnew,

I recently saw bariatric cookbooks mentioned in another thread. Hoping anyone using them can reply as to which book is their favorite? I want to start with just ordering one. TIA

Hi All, Quick question, I am currently 148. I am fine with this weight and size. I feel much healthier. I was wondering if 1400 is enough to maintain my weight without regaining. I try for 1200 per day but sometimes, I have trouble staying with that amount of calories. Most calories come from healthy sources and I practice portion control. Thanks!

  4. Started by Beatsalad,

I'm 3.5 months post-surgery and really sticking with my diet and have had amazing success with weight loss. I have found sticking to the same foods and times to work for me. The problem is that my wife and son have started to complain that I have messed up their meals and meal planning. They want me to go out to eat with them and either share something or just sit there with them. I have no interest in doing this, as what I doing is working for me. Are there meals that you prepare that can be shared with family and stay our your post-op diet?

  5. Hey Folks, I had my surgery on 08/07/2019. Things seemed to go great, I was concerned the day of the surgery that I was put into the wrong area of the hospital because the RN's on duty kept giving me things that I was not permitted to have. They would walk in and give me full cups of liquid and asking if I wanted a soda. They would put straws in everything, they never asked me if I wanted anything to eat. etc. I had to get my little book to show them what I was supposed to be eating and they still would bring me a full cup of soup that had chunks of things in it. I barely drank any water while I was in the hospital and because I was nervous about the nursi…

I hope this question makes sense. My doctor told me that the surgery (I had VSG) would take care of 50-60% of the weight you wanted to lose and after that, you're on your own (must work your tool). I know there are some who lost all of their weight with the surgery and I know some who have lost about 1/2 of their desired weight loss with their surgery and now they must lose the rest on their own (I fall in the latter category) I am 3+yrs out from VSG and I initially lost 100lbs in 7 months then hit a stall. Since then I have gained about 25lbs. I'm in the process of losing it plus the rest of the weight I need to lose (I still need to lose 100+ lbs) So here's my …

I have noticed that I am getting mild heartburn after eating meals...especially dinner. Anyone else experienced this? I am not taking any medication for this. Worried that it will get worse. Any suggestions?

  10. Started by Fc,

Hi all !! Im 18 months post op !! My highest weight was 218 lb . In the first 9 months i got to 168lb and since then I've been in a stall . 5 weeks ago i decided to make a drastic change in which i excercize 6 hrs a week and dropped my carb intake to fruit only . This change has been really effective. This morning i weighed in at 159lb Im really happy and proud of myself , however i am worried that as soon as i dial it down ( when i get to my goal weight - 142lb ) im going to gain everything back . I dont want to stop but i also don't think i can continue this long term What should i do ?? Thanx

  11. Started by mousecat88,

Is a pouch reset diet okay to do simply when you don't feel much restriction anymore, but aren't actually gaining any weight? Will it be helpful in any way to bring some feelings of restriction back? I'm finding I can fit a lot more in lately and I don't like it. lol. I was going to do a modified "pouch reset" of protein shakes and a hardboiled egg for 3 days, then purees 2 days, then soft solids for 2 days.

  12. Started by MeepMeep,

I made it to the full liquid phase of my post-op. Yay! I can have soup. I was never so excited about soup. I made tomato soup and thinned it out. I had 4 oz, ate it at a glacial pace. 20 minutes later the gurgling started and my new tummy revolted. Am I just not ready for full lipids yet?

  13. I am tentatively planning a trip to do a 5 day hike across Peru next Summer. The trip includes all meals, which is all local cuisine with local families or in small villages. I am concerned because I know I will need a good amount of protein and calories to do this hike (it's pretty intense), BUT, most foods make me very ill. I can't eat anything with flour, I am highly sensitive to anything with much sugar, I can't eat any fish, ground beef, most chicken. I can't eat MOST dairy (with the odd exception of cottage cheese and yogurt?? - cream-based anything makes me sick). I can't eat any fruit except berries without feeling sick. And all starchy veggies make me sick. I don…

I'm a month post op VSG and if I eat 3 meals a day I usually hit just below 1000 calories. Weight loss has slown down dramatically since my thin liquid stage, and I was wondering if 800-1000 calories is somehow too much? The info packet my nutritionist gave me doesn't really even mention. Calories. Thanks!

I scoured the forum for tips from people and came up with a revised list of things to try. I'll be adding to this and updating as time goes on but this is a lot to go on and gives me hope as I start my Pureed diet phase this weekend. Enjoy ! 1. Eggface Ricotta Bake (google it) 2. Green bean casserole (bariatric style) with canned chicken 3. Tuna casserole (bariatric style) with green Beans instead of peas 4. Mexican beef with cheese or beans with cheese (too carby for me--made me hungry too soon after eating) 5. Broccoli, spinach or cauliflower pureed with light cream cheese, lemon juice, s/p/g (steam the crap out of it first) 6. Smas…

So before my gastric sleeve I loved pizza! I’m starting to crave it again. My Nutritionist said that I can try pizza with cauliflower pizza crust; however, it has to be 100% cauliflower no flour! Honestly to get that I think I would have to learn how to make it myself. Pizza chains like Pie5 that offer cauliflower crust it does have flour in it. As well as the frozen pizzas like the “O” pizzas. Has anyone found a 100% cauliflower crust.? What about gluten free crust is that carb free?

  17. Started by Butterfly#7,

Surprisingly, I have been having success with international foods. I tried a small portion of the mushroom chicken and angus steak from Panda Express (of course no rice because I’m only 7 weeks post gastric sleeve) and it was soo good! My sleeve didn’t fight me. Today I just noticed thatOlive Garden now offers Zoodles! Zoodles is pasta made from zucchini. I had the Salmon piccata that is served with zucchini, it was good but I have now discovered that I don’t really care for salmon anymore. My husband makes delicious Jamaican curry chicken so he’s going to make some for me that is mild and use cauliflower rice to accompany it. Has anyone else had success with internationa…

  18. Ok, I admit I'm a slow adopter. LOL. So many of you probably already have been making this for centuries. Most of you know how much I still my decaff protein lattes--17 months out. I still love the mornings when I'm not fasting and get to put a juuuge in mah morning or afternoon cuppa. Nirvana! BUT! Lately, I've been jamming on two different decaff coffee variations! They are "non-recipes". Not a great deal of measuring...unless you want to track your cocoa. Decaff With Cinnamon - Just sprinkle a bit of ground cinnamon in the bottom of your cup and fill with hot decaff coffee. Nothing else. No sweetener. No creamer or protein drink. Just pure cinnamon and deca…

I am 2 weeks post op from my VSG and am just starting the pureed/fork mashed soft foods stage. I'm spending the 4th at a club with the BEST chopped salads. Is it safe to eat a proper portion (Currently told to eat at most half a cup) of chopped salad if I have them chop it extra extra fine? Just wondering. Thanks!

  20. Once you open a container of protein powder, how long does it stay good for? I need to get back to basics and plan on starting having a protein drink for breakfast, but not sure if I should use the powder that's open or buy new. And no, I'm not sure how long it's been open for. Just don't know if they're shelf stable or if there's an expiration on it.

  21. Started by Butterfly#7,

My Nutritionist told me to avoid fruit juice like the plague because it’s full of sugar and may cause dumping. My surgeon told me that during the liquid phase I could have a little fruit juice because I’m not getting many calories elsewhere, and long as my sleeve can tolerate it. Well so far my sleeve has not had a problem with 100% fruit juice! I’m about to start soft food phase so I will have to watch caloric intake of fruit juice. I’m so happy I didn’t experience dumping because I don’t like sugar free drinks! I don’t like artificial sweeteners. I’m hoping a little treat of juice once a day won’t hurt me or am I being a rebel lol?

I’m 4 days post-op and I find that I am struggling with hunger. I’m drinking the water and protein shakes, but I’m still very hungry. Am I the only one who is/has struggling/ed wish this? If so, what did you do? What should I do?

  23. Started by Ellf,

I'm now about three months out and am looking to try to start adding some fruits and veggies back in to my diet. What recommended of each should I try? What should I avoid?

  24. Started by Butterfly#7,

Next week is the 4th of July and I’ve been invited to several barbecues. I’m on the soft food phase (only one month since gastric sleeve) can I eat any barbecue food? How about a hamburger (without the bun)? Grilled chicken? Potato salad? I do know that I can’t have hot dogs (don’t like anyway), sausage or corn. Since I can’t eat bread yet can I eat cold cuts on a wrap? I appreciate any and all knowledge regarding this. Thanks in advance.

  25. Started by Butterfly#7,

It’s been about a month since my gastric sleeve procedure. I’m growing tired of sugar free popsicles, yogurt, sf apple sauce and sf jello! Are there any other snacks safe for me to eat?

  26. What does your typical day of eating look like for you.

  27. Started by Butterfly#7,

I had gastric sleeve surgery exactly 3 weeks ago today. My nutritionist forbade me to drink smoothies because of the sugar content. My calves were extremely sore after surgery and it wasn’t due to blood clots but a deficiency of potassium. So, my husband made me a strawberry banana smoothie with nonfat Greek yogurt and added my protein powder. The smoothie was great! It didn’t upset my stomach and my calves started feeling better. I also don’t like -premade protein shakes so now I make me a smoothie everyday and add my protein powder. I’m still losing weight. So I was just wondering if anyone else was told to stay away from fruit smoothies, but found them to be helpful?

After having a double surgery due to them not doing a leak test. I never went back for follow ups. How do I get back on track as far as my food/caloric intake. Does anyone have any suggestions how I get back on track and help with my food. Thanks

"bagel bites" on a chicken and cheese crust. they also make enchiladas and jalepeno poppers with a chicken outside, stuffed with cheese and jalepeno (and other flavors). bosssss. only sold at Walmart or online.

  31. So I'm going to try and describe to you the flavor I'm looking for. I generally hate the taste of plain water, unless I'm dehydrated. My liquid of choice was always regular Coke from a fountain over crushed ice. [trigger? Sorry] Never in my life drank coffee. I would get my caffeine via SF Rockstar. Stopped drinking milk 25 years ago due to intolerance and what I term milk-mouth. That filmy feeling after I would drink dairy products. I would describe the two categories of taste as: sharp (carbonated, citric, film-cutting) And what I mean by the last one is that it removes that milky-film in your mouth like Simple Green on grease. Dull or thick (da…

  33. Started by Cococandice,

Good evening, I’m new to this site and had the gastric sleeve May 22. I’ve been cleared to start eating soft foods/puréed and wanted to know if anyone had any good recipes or ideas so far I’ve only had a scrambled egg

  34. Started by 2Bsmaller18,

I am almost 3 months out. My doctor has a food plan of introducing all proteins at 4 weeks, start vegetables at 2 months, potatoes (all varieties) at 4 months, fruits at 6 months and all foods at 1 year. The nutritionist said try some fruits at 2 months as they may be easier to digest vs vegetables however be aware of carbs/sugars etc. A lot of others post here about potatoes and oatmeal a few weeks after surgery. So far all is well but I feel like I am not getting natural vitamin sources with such a limited diet. I do take calcium and bariatric multivitamin. I'm in a rut and stick to a premier shake, yogurt, some meat (protein, tuna, egg) and some limited vegetabl…

  36. I am now 4 days post-op and am confused about the intervals I need to give while drinking fluids. My doc said to give 30 second breaks- does that mean I can drink water non stop if I give thirty second breaks? In my diet booklet it says 15 minutes for every 30 ml?? And when I have my broth (250 ml for a meal and nothing else) do I have to finish it in an hour? Help please with how long I have to wait in between...

Hi.. I'm a little over six months out. I've been on a pretty strict diet over the past month or so after finding out I cant just eat less of all the bad stuff I used to eat and still lose weight.. heh.. but ya.. I had a cup of ice cream tonight.. the first dessert I've had in a decent amount of time. My calorie count for the day with the scoop included is still fairly ok a bit over 1400 for the 2 meals I ate. I'm just wondering how others deal with this kind of stuff. Did I make a huge error? Or is it ok to have a treat once or twice a month?

I am nearly 4 months post op RNY. The biggest problem I am having is knowing how to tell when I am full. Prior to surgery, i never felt full. I could eat endlessly and still pack more in. Now I will start to eat what seems like a reasonable amount of food - maybe 1/2 cup of whatever. I chew slowly and assess my fullness after each bite. Then BOOM! About 10 minutes after eating, I am ready to vomit, except I can't. I have such bad pain, my mouth is watering with slime and foamies, a cold chill breaks out, the vomit sensation is so strong but it won't happen. (I never could vomit - maybe 10 times in my entire life.) It's just awful. It doesn't happen all the time, and this …

Hello ,I recently ad gastric sleeve in Mexico on April 18 th and so far so good. I have lost 27 pounds. But lately I'm at a stall. I don't have a nutritionist to talk to so I was wondering what are/was others eating at this stage. I feel like all I eat is refried beans, eggs, fish, and cottage cheese. Any good recipes? I'm also drinking protien shakes but I hate the taste. Any recomendations would be very appreciated.

  41. Started by llsl,

So I'm 4 weeks post-op from sleeve and have been on purees for about a week. In the last 2 days I have found that I am actually tolerating less food when I try to eat something. Three days ago I was able to eat 3-4 oz of yogurt, re-fried beans, sweet potatoes, etc. Yesterday I could only eat about 1 oz of anything I tried before I felt some restriction. I'm assuming it's normal to go up and down with how much one can tolerate, but I'm surprised by how little I can take in at the moment. Liquids are still fine. I am going to try waiting longer between eating (I was doing every 2 hours) to see if that helps. Anyone else experience this?

  42. Started by Ellf,

So, my Nutritionist hasn't given me a calorie goal or a minimum or maximum calories to go for. Instead, I just have a calorie goal of 75-85 grams of protein with a minimum protein to hit around 60 as "okay," so long as I target that 75-85 range. This usually ends up with me easily as less than 700 cals per day. According to MyFitnessPal, to lose 2 lbs a week, I should be eating about 2020 calories, so that's kind of a significant difference. Yet somehow, stalls happen. Were you given a calorie goal? Or were you simply given protein goals?

  43. Started by Ellf,

Anyone try this? I know they sell it at the BariatricPal store, but I want some perspective from other bariatric patients before I make the purchase. Is it any good? Does it sit well with your pouch/sleeve?

  45. I'm just over a week out of surgery. I work in an office building of about 1000 people administering health benefits. It is literally the battle of food cultures everywhere in this building. It's Cinco de Mayo and also Asian Heritage day. Everywhere you turn there's free tacos (good ones, I'm in central CA) ceviche, elotes, rice and beans. There's a massive BBQ cooking asada. Then there is every Asian food known to man. Two weeks ago I could have done some serious damage to these endless buffets. But I've got my beef broth to keep me company.

  46. Hey everyone, I’m 8 weeks down and I’ve only lost 11kgs! Am I being too hasty? What am I doing wrong? I’m doing over 10000 steps a day, i have a protein shake for breakfast (even though I can’t bare the taste of the whey shakes and the flavourless one is even worse) I have Caesar salad for lunch ( mostly lettuce, egg and bacon) other days it’s chicken, or tuna, or whole grain brown rice and chicken and dinner isn’t too different. What’s going on? Anyone have any ideas?

  47. Hi all, This article has me wondering if this research is legit or not. They are saying that BACCs compete with tryptophan which in turns leads to lower seratonin levels which can lead to obesity (due to lower satiety). https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325088.php Here is the journal entry https://www.nature.com/articles/s42255-019-0059-2

I am 6 weeks postop from gastric sleeve. I am on a regular diet. I can't seem to get in enough liquidsthroughout the day. I am having to force myself to drink when I'm not thirsty and when I still feel full from eating (maybe an hour after eating). I hate doing that because I know it's going to flush the foodout too quickly. Does it get easier to drink? I know they say that your Protein shakes/milk count towards liquid, but honestly my body needs straight up Water to feel hydrated. And when I don't drink enough I sleep like crap. Most days I struggle to get in 48 oz.

I'm allowed to start full liquids tomorrow and my brain is MUSH from all the information going in. Can someone just remind me what I can add during this phase? I've done great with my clear liquids : clear protein drinks, sf jello, sf popsicles, broth. I'm just now starting to feel hungry for something different.
