Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by Cheer Mama,

I have no appetite right now and I find it hard to want to eat. I need some ideas for 'full liquid'.

  2. Started by Museum-Mama,

1wk post op, I landed my hiney in the ER due to dehydration. I gained 6 lbs back. ok, no biggie. Now I am getting better and closer to meeting the 64oz goal each day. However, my weight has stayed at 199. I have started adding in full liquids ... mostly just Protein shakes. The shakes make me feel so stuffed, and it takes me a loooooooong time to get 11 oz down. Well, I weighed this morning and I have gained a pound. BOO I have e-mailed my NUT to see what she recommends. I am struggling and frustraited to get it all in. I feel like, when I was fat I have NEVER stuffed myself this much!! I am adding to protein to the Water, doing Protein Shakes, and sipping on…

I've been using Mio, Dasani squirt bottles etc to flavor water, but they were so expensive! I got the idea to use the diet sodastream concentrates to flavor my water. Same concept, but a lot more for your money, plus different flavours typically found at a soda fountain. So now I am drinking diet orange, diet grapefruit (great for breakfast time- before or after the meal), diet ginger ale (could be good to treat nausea), diet wild strawberry energy, and diet cola. Yummy!!!

  7. Started by Vixynne,

I'm just under two weeks until my surgery, and my old blender is such an ancient artifact that I knew I'd need an updated one. So, yesterday I went ahead and invested in the Ninja Max Kitchen System. I got mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and with a 20%-off coupon it was only about $75 more than a NutriBullet. The system I purchased came with food processor attachments, a 9-cup blender jar, as well as 2 individual-serving travel cups. Last night, I decided to jump into smoothie making. Here's what I put together to make a pretty durn yummy green one. Since it was an experiment, I was a little too gung-ho to make a small sample, and ended up making a full 9 cups (!!…

  9. Started by Rynn Ailes,

So I'm a huge foodie and I just got surgery, so naturally I'm planning ahead ways to both quell the foodie inside of me and stick to the diet as much as possible. Mixing mashed potatoes with lots of veggies (cauliflower is great) I make potato salad with corn, carrots, and peas, and replace most of the mayo with yogurt (haven't tried this post-op yet, obviously, but an idea for a small serving in case of a craving) Soaking crackers or a small slice (the crust off one side?) of bread in Soup before eating it so it's already expanded Lentils? Has anyone eaten those post-op? I figured I should figure some of these things out before I get to that stage, so I figured I'…

  10. I have finally found a clear liquid I can drink AND enjoy! I loved Ramen noodles before the sleeve. I didn't eat them much but I DID enjoy them. So now I take the flavor packet, a big scoup of unflavored protein(26g), and 2 cups of Water and enjoy. I also like it because when everyone else is eatting a very yummy and delicious smelling dinner, I have my own option.

Hi everyone, I'm new to VST so this is my first post on here. I had surgery last Thursday, May30 and boy has it kicked my butt! My husband had it down about a week and half before mine, and he was in no pain whatsoever. I, however, am still in loads of pain like someone is stabbing me on my sides and the middle of of my belly. I am having a horrible time even getting water down of th day and am SO extremely thirsty. Getting barely an of my protein shakes in either. I'm not hungry, but extremely thirsty and I'm scared I'm not getting what I am supposed to get. Doctor said to drink room tempurature water, so I guess I will try that! Any other suggestions to get the horribl…

  13. Up until about 3-4 days ago, I was having a hard time getting in my liquids and I was supposed to be starting stage 3. Suddenly, the other day, I was able to drink more Water in a day and drink more water in a 30 minute period. Not sure what happened, but I am drinking water at a resonable rate and getting in close to 64 ounces now with no discomfort and very little burping at all. I would feel miserable on the pureed stage, but as soon as I started the soft food stage I felt like I had more energy and my discomfort went away when I would eat. Was just curious if anyone else went through anything similar where you're just miserable and struggling and then suddenly on…

These last few days I was struggling on the pureed stage - yogurt, refried Beans, applesauce, I was just feeling BLAH after I would eat. Wednesday (today) I am to start the soft food stage. So over the weekend I bought tuna and mashed potatoes and cottage cheese. Today, I couldn't even get in 64 ounces of Water or 70 grams of Protein and thought there is no way I can start the soft food stage. Tonight, I couldn't sleep. I was hungry, for the first time I felt hunger. I decided I would be brave and try the tuna mixed in with some applesauce. Strangely enough, I didn't feel miserable after eating it. I took small bites and ate slow. I think I had 5 or 6 bites over…

  20. I was actually looking into trying their coffee drinks and was looking for sugar free flavors. I decided to peruse through their menu and came across a tasty, Protein high, reasonable carbs, and portion friendly Breakfast. It took me about an hour to finish it. And it was yum! I don't plan to make it a daily or even weekly event. But it's nice to know a decent breakfast on the fly isn't limited to a protein bar! Wake-Up Wrap:

So tonight I decided to have 1/2 cup of whole grain thin spaghetti with turkey meatballs (3) and Ragu. I usually avoid pasta but I didn't have time to make my cauliflower rice today like I planned. Anyway, I ate it, and all seemed well. Well. now I am thirsty well over an hour later, and I am having trouble getting my SF iced tea down. It's like the pasta swelled up or something...is that possible? UGH.

  23. I know everyone has different diets from their NUTS but I'm just curious. I feel like I might be able to eat too much at one time. Today for instance I had half a cup of oatmeal made with water and I felt like I could've ate more. And lunch I had about 3oz of Turkey with a lil bit of Mayo and relish. Sound normal or too much? I'm just worried about failing at this just like every other diet attempt.

Assuming I don't have any trouble tolerating lactose after surgery (I don't now, but I know that changes sometimes), is there a nutritional reason for me to choose either almond milk or soy milk over dairy milk after surgery? It looks to me like dairy milk gives me the most bang for my caloric buck in terms of protein and some other nutrients, but am I missing something? Thanks!

I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and am in the pureed stage. I'm looking ahead at the solid foods stage and meal plan from my doctor, and this seems like a lot of food in terms of the stomach is only 4-6 ounces in size, but each meal seems like it is more than 4-6 ounces. Does the stomach eventually tolerate this amount of food after a while? Breakfast - 1/2 small banana, 2 egg whites, 1 slice whole wheat toast, 1 tsp margarine lunch - 3 ounces tuna, 1 tbsp light mayo, 3 saltines, 1/2 orange dinner - 3 ounces fish, 1/4 cup cooked carrots, small baked potato, 1 tsp margarine Each meal just seems like it is more than the size of the sleeve. Thoughts?

Not that I have the ability, at this point, to enjoy anything other than Full Liquids, I am just passed 2 weeks Post Op and my doctor's office says I must be on liquids for 4 weeks, that is unless they progress me at my first appointment after surgery, which is next Thursday.....BUT, I am curious as I look through diet recipes on this site, I see where low-fat mayo and butters and other products are utilized, I was just curious if using the actual product, albeit not as much would be better than a product that has been transformed by chemicals and other processes? I am wondering if the natural products would be easier on the stomach? Just wondering if anyone has any inp…

Not really, but today after 3 weeks of protein shakes, plus pre-op diet I was released to the pureed phase. So, of course on my way back to work, I stopped by the store and got some cottage cheese and greek yoghurt to put in my refrigerator so I will be able to enjoy my next phase. Of course, I looked at what I could have, but not the serving size. Well, I ate an entire 4 oz container of cottage cheese. It went down well, and it took me about 20 minutes to eat it. Once I read my little sheet from the nutritionist, which said my serving size was 1 1/2 ounces I felt like the guy on the KFC commercial....I ate the bones, OMG, I ate the bones! I would be soooo sad if I had to give up the beautiful hen fruit. Does anyone know WHY eggs seem to be hard on the digestive tract? Are eggs a problem just in the beginning or long-term as well?

My surgery was just schedule for July 10th!!! I would've had it sooner but I'm getting married June 22nd and my doc doesn't want me miserable on my wedding. SO, I'm literally starting my liquid diet the day after my wedding ha! For my surgery, they have week 1 of 2 week liquid diet as mainly protein enhanced things. I can still eat veggies as long as their non fibrous, I can do cottage cheese, fruits (non fibrous), chicken, fish, lean beef. I'm wondering though, what are some creative ways to get fuller on the 2nd week of the liquid diet. During the "Clear liquid Phase", my docs instructions say "a high quality Protein supplement such as Isopure or powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury should be used...." So does that mean that any Protein powder used with Water instead of milk is fine? I've ordered some Unjury...but I don't see how it's different than say Chike or GNC's 100% whey. Can I use one of the flavored Whey Protein Powders with water and it be okay during Clear liquids phase? Thanks!

I am making a grocery shopping list to prepare for the post-op diet. I don't want to get burned out on the same three foods and end up eating something I shouldn't. Can you all share what your typical post-op shopping list looks like? Also, I like to juice fresh veggies and fruits and it usually ends up being a little pulpy. Would that be considered appropriate for stage two liquids? If the pulp was strained could it be the stage one Clear Liquids? Thanks!!

How did everyone's eating plans go? I did not have the day off so I didn't go to any picnics or BBQs...I did, however, have a craving for BBQ and stopped by a BBQ restaurant to pick up a to-go meal. Of course, I will be eating it the rest of this week. I am only about 3 weeks out, so maybe I shouldn't even have had this mini-meal at all..I had a grilled chicken leg (no skin), about a teaspoon of sauce, and about three bites each of green beans and baked beans...here is a pic (this is on a saucer so it looks like more than it was)...I was actually surprised I was able to eat that much, and it's kind of scary..I am full, though, from it...what do y'all think?
