Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by babsvt,

I posted this under another forum, but this might be the right place for this... There seems to be very different stages on when to eat foods after surgery and I'm getting confused. Some plans are liquids only for 1week, then full liquids week2, then pureed foods week 3, then soft food week 4, then solid food week 5 and beyond. My sister had surgery a year ago May in NYC. She was started on pureed and soft foods by day 3 and by week 3 was on solid foods. I'm having mine in Mexico on 7/16. I see my Vermont bariatric doctor two weeks after the surgery (he doesn't want me to go to Mexico, but will be my doc anyway.) The only food plan I located on line that follo…

I'm a little over 2 weeks post-op. and cottage cheese is saving my life. I have it alone, mix it with refried or black Beans, mix it with chili, etc. it has almost no carbs and 13 grams of protien per 1/2 cup! I got so sick of the sweet flavors or protien shakes (vanilla, choc., cookies&cream, etc) that savory foods have really made me happy. And I feel more energy getting my protien from real food instead of liquid.

  8. I am one week post-op, on full liquids, but had some mushy food today. It did not sit well with my stomach and I threw some of it up. Now I am very scared. I feel fine now, but should I look for warning signs of a leak? Should I call my doctor? Or am OK? Thanks!

I just wanted to let everyone know how I just lost 7 lbs in the last 6 days. I have been doing around 60gm of carbs a day, per my doctors orders. I had a stall at 255 for 7 days. I decided to go back to low carb, <30gms a day. Well, I've lost 7.4 lbs in 6 days. I have always been a fan of low carbing. In fact I lost 100 lbs in 2004, went off and gained all back. The major difference this time is I'm eating 5-6 small low carb meals a day and man it is burning my fat off. I always eat a Protein and good carb right after my walk every morning. EX: 1 scrambled egg w/jimmy dean sausage crumbles and 1 roma tomato, peeled because the skin bothers my "peanut". Just wanted …

  12. When will it happen? I started pureed stage today and my first meal was about 8 mini bites of refried beans. I went really slowly and didn't drink anything while eating. My stomach feels ok, kinda rumbly, but I haven't had any of the horrible dumping symptoms. How long does it take for your stomach to decide it does or doesn't like the food?

They have been great on the full liquid phase! I'm a vegetarian so I had veggie and bean curd soup and today I had seafood soup! The seafood soups is wonderful! It's a clear broth, but full of veggies and seafood! I think I'm going to purée the seafood and put it back in since I can handle cream soups just fine! Great protein I'm sure!! Oh it even has egg whites!

Hello everyone. I'm finally home, three days in. I still feel weak. Doctor told me to sip on Water and Protein shakes. I know we're supposed to get in a lot of h2o, and pre-op I could get down 100oz+ easily. I'm barely a 1/3rd of the way through one 16 oz. bottle. How long until your intake increased?

Hey guys, I ordered a box of the 12 Flavor Sample Pack and 4 packs of the PB Cups. I have tried 1 pb cup (out of one of the packages, half of the free cookie dough (sweetened with Stevia) one they sent, and 1/2 of the brownie one (sweetened with Sucralose..aka splenda), and YUCK! I just can't do it. They taste overly "artificially sweetened" to me. The company is being gracious and is refunding me for them, but doesn't want me to send them back. They asked me to give them away. I know some of you really love them, so does anyone want me to mail you the rest? (11 bars and 3 packs of the pb cups...slightly melted from delivery)? I discovered this a while ago while on one of my many weight watcher diets LOL This Pasta is amazing! It tastes like regular pasta, and 2 oz uncooked is 7 grams of Protein. The calories, fat and carbs are low too. So, if you like pasta...I recommend this (I can't wait to get back to my bread stage lol) Anyway...wanted to share http://www.fibergourmet.com/Default.aspx

Ok, I've been on other threads sharing my experiences and giving my confessions. I really wanna stick it now.. I just hit my 3 week mark. I was sleeved on 5/30.. Right at surgery I weighed 271... I'm at 255 right now and it's kinda sticking right there. It'll go down a couple of pounds then go right back to 255. I'll admit again, I've been rushing. Externally I feel completely normal and I don't have any pain so I guess I'm trying to go back to the old ways. I've tried pizza by taking small bites and chewing til it's mush, I've tried taking a bite of a chicken sandwich, and so on.... All of which has led me to throwing up and praying to the porcelain gods... I wou…

  35. Hello everyone, I am 7 months out post-op, I was 280 pounds before and my surgery was 11/27/2012, I am down to 231 now. Is that too little of a weight loss in that amount of time? I feel like I am doing something wrong. I started today to get back to basics, low carbs, low sugar and between 800-1000 calories a day, but I still went over today, around 1250 I think it is. does anyone out there struggle with their food intake? Are any of you still tempted to eat bad things and way more slider foods? I feel like I am. I need the support and I really hope I am not alone in this. What are your ways of doing better? Sticking to it? Is this what's slowing down my weight loss? Tha…

So I am exactly one week post off and I feel as if I should not be craving foods the way I am. Maybe I was naïve but I was expecting, that for the first few weeks at least, I wouldn't have my usual appetite. My mom did the surgery and for the first 3 months she had to force herself to eat. Me, 2 days after I got back from the hospital I am already craving my usual, bread, chocolate, crackers. And its like, if I eat too much I feel sick but I never feel full. Maybe I was expecting too much but im just frustrated because I am truly craving food and I was expecting it to not be like this in the beginning. I even joked that the doc left too much stomach in me. Does anyone el…

  39. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I know most ppl think about what they will and won't be able to eat post-op and alot of it is the less than healthy favs we might have but I have questions regarding healthier options. *Spicy foods? Will I be able to eat them post-op? If not right away when? I LOVE spicy foods. In fact I am growing multiple jalapeno and habanero plants, because I love them so much. I know spicy can cause acid issues but are they intolerable? If I can't have spicy I think this is what I will miss most post-op *Salads? woohoo i just found a solution to the clear liquid stage 1. surg 6/18. i have humapro 2 flavors but not a huge fan. finances are tight right now so that was going to have to be the solution. i bought sugar free jello and mixed 2 scoops into it and mixed to directions. it is ok. so now 2 cups has turned into 50 grams of protein. i have the peach mango and sour grape humapro. i bought peach and raspberry jellos to pair with the humapro.

  47. Surgery was May 16th, and I'm supposed to be on full liquids for 2 weeks, pureed foods for 2 weeks, mushy food for 2 weeks, and then normal food. But it is day 5 and I've had NO trouble getting anything down, and I've had some thicker stuff that was on the pureed list.... And I even had a bite of salmon yesterday... and some tomato soup (that I unknowingly ate not realizing I'm not supposed to have because of the sugar and possibility of dumping) and I had NO issues with it......... I know it's good that I'm not having trouble, but it makes me feel like something is wrong. I mean, I am eating 4 oz. at a time like I'm told, and eating slowly, but still........... Is this b…

But I don't think I have those issues. When I am sad/angry/disappointed, I usually tend to eat less because I withdrawal a little into myself. My therapist doesn't believe I emotionally eat either. My family is not large like me and we don't have things centered on food. Do I overeat? Absolutely! I struggle a lot with insulin hunger (I have PCOS and insulin resistance) but I also just plain love food! I just love how most things taste!
