Most programs discourage gum post op. The main concern seems to be if it is accidently swallowed it could cause a blockage.

Sorbitol and xylitol, two sweetening sugar alcohols that are often used in sugar-free gum and candies, can give people stomach cramps and diarrhea if overused, as well.

There's also a thought out there that gum chewing--like straw sipping--leads you to swallow extra air, which can cause gas and bloating.

I started chewing trident occasionally about 3-4 months out from surgery. My surgeon said it was alright as long as I didn't have a habit of swallowing gum, which I never have.

oooooooooo, I'm tellin!!!

I chew gum, a lot. In fact, I think it may be my new transfer addiction. I have never been a gum swallower. I chew probably 3-5 pieces a day to give my mouth something to do without actually putting things into my stomach. I don't use a straw though ^^^ ;)

I also chew a lot of gum. Almost constantly. Started 13 yr ago when I gave up smoking. Minty flavored eclipse sugar free actually calms my stomach down and helps me feel less gassy. My Dr never said I couldn't plus he allows straws from the beginning. Every Dr seems to be so different. Do what works for you.

Oh my. I chew gum infrequently but I swallow it sometimes. I feel awful after I do. Glad to see this thread because I couldn't figure out why.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
