At my 1 month check in with my surgeon yesterday, and I told them I was getting 60-80g of Protein a day, and to my surprise their reaction was shock. I didn't think quick enough to ask them why, but they said that I really should just shoot for 60g. I thought it might have to do with the idea that more protein=more calories, but they said I shouldn't even be thinking about calories, Does anybody know why they wouldn't want me eating more than 60g of protein?

So I had surgery on 3/25, 16 days ago. This past Friday I was started on soft foods. My MD doesn't have a puree stage. I was told that for protein I could add soft cooked eggs, cheese, and cottage cheese. I called back that afternoon to ask if I could have refried or black beans as long as they were soft/pureed and was told that I could but not to use it as a stand alone protein source. They want me drinking 1 hour and eating the next and alternating pretty much the whole day while I'm awake. The MD, NP nor the NUT will tell me how many calories I am supposed to be taking in a day. I went ahead and planned what I will have tomorrow with all of my protein shakes, me…

OK, I have some questions about nutrition, and how there are so many contradicting opinions. 1. Which is better, low fat or low sugar? It seems all the low fat or no fat options out there are high in sugars, and all the low sugar or low carb options are high in fat. Which should we go with? When I was on the Atkins diet, I was told to stay away from low-fat versions of things because they put so many fillers in them to make them taste good and have good texture. But now it seems they want us to eat low fat. 2. Some of the things they recommend for us to eat or drink, especially in the beginning, are full of artificial sweeteners and chemicals. Things like Crysta…

Just thinking ahead, and wondering if I should look for something like the baby bullet since I will need soft/pureed food. I have a blender, but wonder if something smaller might be better. I will be with parents the week of op, but at home afterward and most likely at work. The easier and more prepared I am, the better I can do! Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks!

I'm keeping track of my calories/protein/water on MFP and don't need help with those, but I'm not sure what to set my carb limit as? I'm 1 month out and have been released by my doctor to have all foods. He doesn't have very extensive or strict guidelines so I'm wondering what's everyone else's average carb intake? Right now, my carbs are usually between 70-80 grams per day.

I'm wondering how those of you six months in are doing and how much weight you've lost already? What do you eat now? How does it make you feel, for instance do certain things make you sick? Can you have a "regular" diet, I mean eat whatever you want just very small portions of it? How do you keep from stretching out your pouch?

I thought the new stomach was only able to hold 3.5-4oz of food at once? I just finished off my "first" chobani 6 oz yogurt with no problem. Toward the end I got that "full" feeling (new experience for me) , but my point being that I was able to eat all 6 oz in one short sitting. And yes, this was my first "solid" meal and I didn't eat it slowly because..it was ..solid..and I could wrap my tongue and teeth around it. Come on, you know what I'm talking about after drinking fluids for weeks on end, lol. . Has anyone else experience this, or did they not take enough in the OR, or does yogurt go down easier and kind of treat it like a liquid? I kind of feel defeated a bit. I …

So since being sleeved three weeks ago today, I have not felt restriction. I could drink fluids freely even in the hospital and can pretty much gulp Water now about half a cup at a time if I want.. When I added yogurts and cottage cheese, I'd measure a half cup and I could just eat the whole thing. On my first day of pureeds I ate a soft scrambled egg and 1/4 cup of refried Beans and yeah, it left me satisfied, but that's way more than most people say they eat at this stage. I started thinking there's something wrong with me!. Today I graduated to soft meats and fish.... I ate a 1.5 ounce piece of hot bologna (it's a weird spicy canned meat) and as I was chewing the…

So I am scheduled for surgery on 4-16-2013 and started my preop diet a week sooner than required. Even though I was told that I can start my diet 4/1/2013 I decided that I already have accomplished a week on the diet that I might as well keep it up. Instead of having Easter dinner and candy I chose my protein shake and some air popped white corn plain instead. Feeling very proud today. Just wanted to share.

Wow, I really need to re-focus. Over the last 3 days I have eaten so much of the stuff that I swore off over 2 months ago. Saturday was my birthday, I turned 37. My wonderful sweet husband took me out for a date day without the kids. The day started out great, I went for a 5 mile walk and then went and had a 90 minute massage. We decided to venture to the city and we were having a great time meandering the streets. My husband decided that he was going to have some ice cream and this is where I fell off the wagon big time. I figured heck its my birthday, one little scoop of ice cream will be ok. I got a scoop of mint choc chip in a cup. About 45 minutes after eati…

chicken and chicken, veggie/veggie, etc.) Since this was first week, everything got strained through cheesecloth before drinking. I added powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken and unflavored Proteins to these when needed, and that was really nice for when I wanted something savory instead of that sugar-free sweet. This is the first time I have ever said it....i didnt know how much until today...i was sitting here looking at the number to Red Robin on my phone trying my best to not call it. I was afraid to leave the house today because i didnt want stop and get something like i often do..Today scared me. I wept uncontrollably as my husband held me,I felt so helpless yearning for something I know is bad for me. I am technically ahead of my pre op diet schedule,my surgery is in 3 weeks and I have already started the restrictive diet. I weighed my self and I lost 12 pounds in 4 days. Of course that prompted me to want to cheat myself. After all,i am ahead of schedule and I can pic…

I'm so very proud to say I'm on day 3 of the preop diet and I've stuck to it religiously. I haven't had 1 slip up. I even went as far as going to a crawfish boil at my best friend's house which was full of delicious foods and alcohol. I patiently drank my protein shakes and chicken broth. Sipped on water all night and still had a blast. My friends have been so very supportive and loving. I will admit I did bust into tears briefly from feeling a little overwhelmed. But the important thing is I'm sticking with it! I've found strength and determination I didn't know were there. I have to admit I'm feeling a bit like Wonder Woman. Lol

I'm a few days away from being 4 months post-op and I think I'm doing pretty well. I'm just seriously lacking in the food variety department. I could count the things I only eat on one hand: beans, cat fish, chobani, weight watchers string cheese, and egg beaters (egg substitute). Wow I really was able to count them all on one hand! haha..so I'm in need of some guidance as to what kind of things to eat so I could mix things up a bit because I am sick of always eating either beans of cat fish for dinner. I know that Kaiser guidelines said I could have ground beef by now but I am really afraid of not losing my weight so I'm staying away from the heavy meats. Also, has anyo…

EDIT *5 Day POUCH Test Diet So, i'm 9 months post op and I've lost about 130lbs, which is great! The problem I've been having are those dreaded stalls. After two months of no weight less, i tried the 5 day sleeve test diet, and i have to warn you, the results were not great! I became so impacted in my bowels that i almost had to go to the hospital. It was horrific. I have managed to unblock myself 'manually' but it was an extremely painful and distressing experience. I am worried i may have caused actual damage to my digestive system. Has anyone else experienced this? (Sorry about being gross) Paul

So I'm 6 days out and all is fine and dandy EXCEPT for my JP drain....the stitches poke when I move certain ways, I can only sleep on my back(so I don't sleep through the night) and I can't leave the house because this thing doesn't hide well.... Is anyone else hating their drain?! Most people I heard didnt even have one, so why do some doctors choose to use one while others don't? Phew... I just needed to get that off my chest!

Hello VST friends. I know that a lot of intake early on has to do with sleeve inflammation and not necessarily the size of the actual finished product.. but still I can't help but compare... I am two weeks out and this morning for Breakfast I had 3T of refried Beans, 1/4 slice of american cheese, and nearly a whole egg. Now of course yes, this is much less than I would have ever eaten in the past, but still I was shocked by how much it was.. I ate it in about 10 minutes. .. from a baby spooon... putting the spoon down in between bites to chew (chewing refried beans and eggs is something that I've NEVER done in my life) I ate to the point of being satisfied, though I …

I was sleeved on 3/18 and can't stomach the thought of anything warm. I'm not able to stomach jello or water. I have been able to take sugar free apple & cranberry grape juice. Orange popsicles are the only flavor that would settle. Thank goodness today I move from clear liquids to full liquids. I'm looking forward to trying a few more things.

I am 4 days post op and on a very limited full liquid diet. It consists of yogurt, protien suppliements, and pureed fruit. I was craving something savory and the chicken broth just was not cutting it. my husband came up with an excellent add in for the plain yogurt, taco seasoning! I just popped the contents of the packet into my spice grinder and added a small amount of the powdered goodness into the yogurt, it iasted like I was eating a dip with a spoon, spicy and creamy. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I had my VSG 8 days ago. I'm forcing in my water intake but I haven't had any protein shakes yet? I haven't had more than 200 calories per day. I'm sure that'll increase w/ time. My concern is I haven't been able to drink any protein shakes so my protein intake is ZERO! Is this going to stunt my weight loss?

Out of curiosity, was anyone able to take bigger bites after a while or do you have to stick with "toddler-sized" bites forever? My surgery is March 26th & i have been practicing the small pieces, longer chewing and i cant seem to do it. My tounge just pushes the food down my throat naturally and im afraid it may complicate things. Im trying to avoid throwing up at any circumstance and just wondering if this is a tool to get used to the size of your new tummy. Any experience with this? Or advice, tips would be very helpful. Thank you!

I hear people saying a couple bites and they are done stuffed. I have had no nausea, or pain after eating so guess should be happy and down 21 pounds total so is it just bc not on regular foods yet?
