Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by deedeemuffin,

I am 6 weeks post-op and friends of mine are getting married on the 18th of this month. After the ceremony they're just having an informal get together at a sports bar in Manhattan. I think people are just mostly going to have drinks. Cocktails are like $12. I am just wondering what peoples experiences with alcohol have been post-op? I haven't had any problems with any food that I've tried. I don't really drink. So, even before surgery I would just nurse 1 drink all night. So, pros? cons? Worth the $12 drink?

I am 6weeks post op band to sleeve revision and 41 pounds...YAHHHHHH. I ate tuna salad for the first time and felt sick to my stomach. Ate it again today for lunch....yup; sick to my stomach. Today for dinner my best made me boneless and skinless chicken thighs. Made me feel the same sick to my stomach. Scrambled eggs are fine. Soup and other purees have been fine. Has anyone had problems tolerating certain foods? I have tried some cheeses with no problems. I was told that as I start eating different foods my stomach may not tolerate them. What has been your experience? Thanks for sharing..... I love my sleeve!

So I am on day two of my pre op liquid diet and I am allowed a serving of greek yogurt a day (plain of course) - lovely right? It's hardly edible. Well, I was looking for ways to make it taste better without adding solids or sugar to it and this is what I did today that actually made it tolerable. mix your half a cup of greek with a teaspoon of vanilla extract, a teaspoon of almond extract, and a teaspoon of lemon extract. I also added a pack of splenda. Don't get me wrong, its not great, but its a lot better than before. If anyone has any better ideas please bless me with them. I already tried crystal light in it and honestly that was pretty terrible for me…

Hello all, I was prescribed stomach stuff by my doc in Mexico but have run out of it and am starting to get what might be acid symptoms. I was thinking of trying Prilosec or the Cosco analog, which is cheaper, but both of them say to discontinue use after 14 days. It seems like a lot of folks post-sleeve just use these every day as a fact of life. Is that safe, or is there something I need to do to balance that? I am already taking Multivitamins and calcium citrate.

I am 3 days post op and on my liquid diet. I was just wondering what a daily diet looks like 1-5 years from now.

  10. Started by amytug,

Ok. I'm not complaining. I'm not saying that I cant do the preop diet. I'm not lamenting about not being able to go without good because I need bacon and chocolate. What I AM saying is this: since so many surgeons all have a different PRE op diet, is it safe to assume that I can pick another strict preop diet? Especially If I do it for 2 weeks vs the 1 that is required for my bmi. I was choosing between 2 different surgeons. The other surgeon gave me a choice between 2 weeks low fat low carb or 4 days of only yogurt. This surgeon I chose says one week of shake Shake 4 oz lean Protein Shake if needed Metamucil for hunger What if I were to add super low carb…

  12. Started by blewy99,

Afternoon all! I am almost 2 weeks post-op (12/17) and getting ready to go from liquids to puree diet. Was wanting to ask for ideas for transitioning. I have been to the store and bought some things but know as much as I want to "eat" something I need to ease into things. What were some of the things that you all ate as you made the transition between the two diets? When you found something you didn't like, was it the taste or the texture that sent the negative signals? Thanks in advance! Christy

Has any post- op ppl try protein bars? I had surgery 12/4 and haven't been able to get protein in. I've tried every thing shakes, powders, isopure and even some protein teas and every thing wants to come right back up HELP!! I talk to doc but said every thing is ok and it's just me and my taste buds...

  14. Started by Danielle81,

The combination of optifast and water all day leaves me with a terrible taste in my mouth, so I asked my doc if I could chew sugarless gum and he says ok. I can chew it up to the day before my surgery. It's so nice to have something with flavor to chew on! Extra gum dessert delights has awesome favors. I think I bought one of each at Target lol.

My surgery was Aug 27th. I was 350 day of surgery and now I'm at a standstill at 265. Before I could only eat 6oz. The size of a yogurt cup. Recently I increased going to the gym and am now Gibson.g myself so hungry. Today I had soup and then lunch was 3 inches of a turkey hoagie. All low fat. But not even an hour later my stomach was growling so bad and I was hungry again so I ate the other 3" of the hoagie. I'm not supposed to track calories but I am supposed to track portions. Am I eating to much??? Is there anyone else hungry like me? And how about going to the gym, is anyone really hungry afterwards?

  17. Started by Strangefruit,

I went to Chipotle and got a naked burrito bowl - chicken, cheese and mild salsa... I got 4 meals out of it. I am looking forward to being able to add onions, peppers and other stuff, but for now its a very satisfying change from fish. I am trying to go high Protein and low carbs, so no Beans... Anyway, it was delicious!

I am 2 days post op, band to sleeve revision. I had been told to try to drink 2-4 oz each hour. I have been able to do at least 4oz if not a little more. No pain or discomfort. Should I be able to be drinking this much already??

  20. Started by Paulag,

I was sleeved on November 20th 2012 and I am starting to crave foods other then chicken and fish. I have had so much Soup that I am afraid I will never eat soup again and I have always loved it. I am wondering if anyone else is eating different foods right now? I noticed that some people sound like they are eating almost anything and I am just concerned that it might be too soon for some of those things but I would love to try it. Anyone else from MN that has stepped forward on the diet? Paula

  23. Stevia, splenda, etc, all taste extremely bitter to me and leave that bitter taste in my mouth for HOURS. I cannot tolerate them at all. So, my question is this: am I allowed any sugar at all after the surgery during my liquids and mushies phases? I've found a few Protein powders at the natural grocery store with only natural sugar and those taste ok, but they have like 6 or 7 grams of sugar per serving. Everyone also talks about sugar free popsicles and pudding and Jello, but I've tried all three of those things (my dad is diabetic and kept those things around the house) and the pudding actually made me vomit. Are the non-sugar free versions ok? My first nutritio…

I started my soft food phase today- whoopee! I am seriously enjoying my soggy Special K Protein plus! Looks like I will be able to get down all of it- 1/2 cup Cereal soaked in 1/4 skim milk...yum yummy yum. On another note, have you guys really noticed the difference in your grocery cart? I read literally every label before I put anything in the cart. My cart looks SO much different post-sleeve. That's what I think I love most about my sleeve- it allows me to not only eat less, but it allows me to choose healthy food that my old big stomach would have been hungry on...one more week then regular diet! -Kendra Starting: 302 SW (12/17): 272 This morning: 251

If you like peanut butter & or just want to get a good amount of protein out of a meal this is great. It's also almost like a sweet treat. Just mix together a 6oz. container of your favorite plain Greek yogurt, 1 packet of whatever calorie free sweetener that you use regularly & 2 tbsp. of PB2 powdered peanut butter. It gives you 145 calories, 23g of protein and 13g carbs. If you want less carbs just use one tbsp. of the PB2. It doesn't taste quite as good as the 2tbsp. though. So glad to have this in my food rotation. Try it!

  35. Hello everyone, This is my first post. I am 9 days post-op and just had my drain pulled out today.. Yippee, it caused a lot of pain and discomfort, on both sides of my stomach. My question is I know that I should be on full liquids for a while, but my doc states 5 weeks as he is VERY conservative. When are most of you able to move to purees? I am not wanting to eat food but 5 more weeks of this seems crazy. thanks.

I hate when people don't support or give u the wrong advice. Telling it's OK to to just have a piece of chicken or that ur daughter had the bypass and she used to put chips in her mouth suck the flavor out and spit it out. I say I'm not even hungry I don't crave that stuff, than u are going to be anorexic. WTF Im just doing what the doctor says. Offering me for is not helping me!!

I hope I didn't screw up too bad - I was hungry at work after my 2 protein shakes and lean cuisine entree (my one reasonable meal for today), so I ate 3 celery sticks and 2 tbsp of hummus. I don't think I did too badly with that, especially since at one point in the day I was holding a bag of Cheetos AND a pack of Oreos, but can someone please give me some feedback about the preop diets? I still have 9 days to go. I know it will get better in a little bit, but the last couple of days have been rough. Can someone please give me an idea of what you are doing for your preop diet?

I'm so tired to protein. I'm at the end of my first week of full liquids--I have one more week to go. I am having the hardest time drinking all my protein! Sure, I sip all day, but the taste (and I've tried a bunch--Nectar, IsoPure, Premier Protein, etc.) of all of them are driving me crazy. It's to the point that I'd just rather drink water all day...which is exactly what I did today. I know that's not healthy. I know my hair is gonna fall out probably. I need encouragement! Do any of you feel the same way about protein? I feel like once I start my mushies I'll be ok, but for now, with just liquids, I'm about to pull my hair out....of course, it'll probably com…

The supplements that I purchased make me so nauseated. I never had sweet tooth, now I can't take any of the favors. I vomited on day 2 after trying protein Jello, talk about scary. I did tolerate a nectar, coconut flavor, but barely. So I am going to keep on my broths, organic chicken was best, my fluids and just have to work on protein in week 2. Vomiting was scary and I don't want to do it again. So I do have a few bottles of Isopure if anybody needs them. I know that many people don't mind the flavor, you can message m…

  49. It's been 2 days since surgery and the popsicles are really helping me get through this part. The combination of cold, sweet and the sense that I'm chewing is really helping. Still can't eat more than a couple of nibbles each time, but it is getting better. Anyone else have a favorite post-op food that helped them the most?

I was sleeved on 12/10 and still on a full liquid diet. Before surgery whenever i had an upset stomach i would put baking soda on a lime and bite it, something my hispanic husbands Mom taught me. My Dr has instructed me no carbonated beverages. I've had an upset stomach all day, and his office if now closed, what do you guys think, would it be ok?
