Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by bringiton,

I was just wondering, with the amount of protein drinks right away and all, do you think the post op diet is expensive? Vitamins, supplements, shakes, et al. Surely this is doable for us "common" folk too and not only the Doctors and lawyers?

  2. Started by MissTiffany203,

I'm week 4 post op ; & I've been eating soft foods.... I eat slow & everything but still afraid I might throw up... I think I'm nervous of that because I don't want to throw up lol anyone else have this experience?

I am 2.5 wks post op and am starting to incorporate puréed and really crunchy foods per my surgeon. I understand we aren't supposed to drink 30 min before or after, but I can't imagine why. Right now my goal with eating is to try new foods and see how I tolerate them. I am not eating for fullness (I'm not really hungry to begin with!) Accordingly, what is the problem filling my stomach with liquids at the same time? Seems like the point would be so we are full of nutrient rich food and not liquid when we have a meal--but I'm only taking small bites of food. Any thoughts? Thanks!

OK, so I have a calorie question..I am tracking my food daily on MyFitnessPal. I have set my daily goal to 600 calories. I was sleeved 12/26, so I am 6 weeks today. I have lost 42 lbs to date however I am experiencing some weight fluctuation. I am aware of the stall stages and that, I am sure, is part of it. But my question is...with a calorie goal of 600, is this goal BEFORE or AFTER exercise is factored in? I want to utilize my tool (sleeve) to its fullest and want to make sure I have my facts correct. Also, does anyone know any tips or tricks to avoid the stalls? I seem to get out of 1 for a couple days then another starts and I'm so freaked out that the weight…

I work in a small office and today they ALL decided to order some delicious steak fries from a local deli. THEY SMELL AMAZING!!! The smell of fried potatoes and salt and ketchup is all around me and I can't escape!!!! I am barely 2 weeks post-op and still on a full liquid diet so obviously I won't sneak one but I just wanted to vent my "frustration" to all my sleeve buddies who know how I feel. Thanks for listening...I'll go back to my protein drink and try to think about something else now. lol

Just wondering what people take on a reg basis re: Vitamins and supplements. I am on day 4 preop liquid diet and take Calcium, magnesium, a multi Vitamin, Biotin and mega red daily. Actually, the magnesium is every other day. I think these pills will be too BIG post op. What do other people do? Not fond of any LIQUID vitamins!

  10. Started by Sharonisshrinking,

It seems as if i am developing some old new bad habits. I had my surgery on November 8 and I have lost a total of 90 pounds both preop and postop. But lately it seems I'm getting into some bad habits. I've really started to enjoy my morning Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks and no it's not skinny! It also appears that I've fallen back into eating whenever I'm watching anything on TV. I hate that I'm getting some of my old habits back. Now I know that before I had the surgery, I had some real issues with food. I know the surgery did not magically fix any of those issues. So, now I'm realizing that the hard work has to start. A part of me is just really disappointed in my…

OK so I packed my little lunch bag so I would be ready to go tomorrow morning. I put 2 protein drinks in there and lots of water. Going to stop at a gas station and just buy a package of water to carry in my car. I'm a home health speech therapist so my car is my office. All I'm allowed is 2 protein drinks and a small dinner-beef, chicken, etc and a side of vegetables. Let the liver shrinking begin.

I just had my first glass of skim milk for my 3 week diet. I'm worried I won't be able to stay on it, and very jealous of everyone else on this board who doesn't have this strict of a pre-opt diet. I'm scheduled and approved for Feb. 19 I hope I can do this I'm so excited for this life change. Has anyone had to do the milk diet and what helped you get through it?

I had very slight discomfort and I wont be doing that again!!! But now I'm scared to death I did that. i feel fine now but glad to have the wake up call to stay the course. Just needing assurance I didn't spring a leak over it.

  15. Well today, at exactly 2 weeks out, I have not been getting in my protein shakes or powders hardly at all. Last night I resolved to do better. Today I was feeling kinda like a warm drink as I have had some indigestion, and thinking along the hot chocolate line, lol. Really. Hot tea wasn't going to work for me and I remembered my resolve for the protein shakes. Well I experimented and took a double coffee cup 16 oz. put water in it, nuked it, and added two level scoops of the protein powder from Wal-Mart in Chocolate Peanut Butter, stirred it up and it was just like hot chocolate with some peanut butter stirred in. I almost got sick I wanted to drink it so fast. This is a…

For everyone what did your daily meals look like throughout the day and what were you doing for exercise !

  17. Started by ISleevedIt,

I just met with the dietician today. She said that clear liquids was only for the day after surgery then I progress to full liquids for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of puree food, then solids. I won't need to start my vitamins again until the puree stage. She said many people have problems with vitamins during the liquid stage, so they like to start the vitamins at the puree stage. How's your diet plan?

It's Superbowl weekend!!! What we used to do: chips, dips (lots of fattening dips), salsa, beer, wine, ribs... basically we started with the "Puppy bowl" and ate way through midnight!! So changes this year... still have ribs (for daughter who loves them), cottage cheese, blueberries, but I also am making homemade guacamole, bean dip (this is super yummy - I pureed this at first and now eat it - see recipe below) and hummus - oh an no beer or wine this year :-). But I don't know how I can "dip" into these???? Any suggestions? I am still on soft foods - and I know that my stomach will only allow about 4 tbls/hour on these things.... Any other suggestions - in additi…

2 days shy of my eight month mark. 105 pounds lost. At 5'11 I am at 287 pounds. I have not lost any weight for nearly 3 months now. I was actively exercising until about three weeks ago, when I had an incident involving an external hemmoroid. Never had one before, but I am not sure what (if anything) there is to which I can attribute its arrival. It is not awful, but has managed to put me off exercising and now I am having some reluctance going back into it. Looking for tips on dealing with plateaus, specifically falling off the wagon and getting sloppy as the scale victories slow down. thanks

Just picked up some Isopure before surgery. I got it cold and started to drink, yak it's not so good. As expensive as it is, and I bought 4 bottles, I tried to figure out what to do. Well I have Hawaiian punch drink sticks, so I added about half a stick. Much better. I have the fruit one and a pineapple fruit one. Just wanted to share if anyone else needs to try it. Also, If you look under Protein shakes in Pinterest there are good recipes to make your shakes better.

Hello, I am having my surgery a week from today and trying to find a suitable protein supplement. Something that I will like, My question is nutrition wise as well as which is best for weight loss after surgery when you have to supplement, which is better or does it matter......low carb slimfast or a protein powder such as unjury? Thanks for the help!

I was told to do a 3 week Bariatric Advantage pre-op diet because my BMI is 50. I understand this is totally necessary, and will bite the bullet and do what I gotta do---- however, do I HAVE to use bariatric advantage ( sooo gross- I had samples at surgeons office) or can I use another protein drink 3 times a day?? I'm putting a call in to NUT but was curious on everyone's thoughts;).

Okay kids... I actually love Soup but never make it because spouse and teenager don't like it at all... so my occassion to use broth in the past is zero. So, no idea what to look for. I've seen the "box" broth, cubes that make a broth, crystals, cans... the works! But what do you use and like? I appreciate brand names. I live in the Seattle area. Oh, and what's the story on strained Miso soup? I read in one thread it's a good source of protien but counts for the immediate post-op clear liquid phase too. Thanks for your voices of experience. I'm two weeks pre-op tomorrow.

Hi all, I am scheduled for surgery on 2/6 and I am trying to get everything (work, home, kids, kitchen) ready. I am good with the stage 1 and 2 foods, the pureed foods however....not appealing at all! What worked for all of you? I have been told that baby food (stage 1, meats) is the easiest to manage. There has got to be a more palatable alternative! Thanks

  30. So I started my Pre-op Diet on Saturday. It has 19 points on it that read more like a healthy-living lifestyle guide rather than a super-conservative, hard core diet that I was expecting. I'm managing the 19 points just fine, but feel like I'm cheating... I read about so many others, especially with super high BMI's like my own, who have to do full on liquid diets in this time period. I have even been following the video blog of another recent sleever, same surgeon as me, who mentions repeatedly his two week pre-op liquid diet. I contacted my coordinator to be SURE that what I had was the guidlines they wanted me to follow and yes, I have the info they want me to hav…

How much did your dr. Want you to take to help clear you before surgery?

  32. Started by Stef,

I've only been here for a couple of weeks but I am stunned by the number of posts where people ask if it's ok to ignore their post surgical dietary instructions because they really want to eat something they know they shouldn't. Is it really worth the chance of having complications to satisfy a craving? Do you want to be cut open again to deal with a leak, infection or some other complication? Are people really lacking that much basic common sense? It honestly boggles my mind to read so many posts like that.

  33. Started by sexyjimenez,

For dinner I had 1/4 cup of mashed potato and 1/4 cup of hormel turkey n bean chili. I mixed it in the bullet (so much for not blending meat lol) and it was actually delicious... I ate the whole thing... Shouldn't I be full???? I didn't feel any restriction... I'm two weeks n 2 days out... Thanks

Hi everyone! I am 9 months post op and I have only lost 10lbs since October. I have been doing everything (not perfect) but when I slip I catch myself. I am exercising, eating right, and avoiding temptation as much as possible. I have heard that if you do a back to basics week it can help start up your weightloss again. Is this true? Or is anyone else where I am at. I have lost a total of 87lbs since surgery, which I am ecstatic over, but I have another 50 to go feel as if there is something wrong. I'm not sure why I'm not losing anymore! Help!!!!

I'm looking to buy some books to help me through the postop diet ruts. I read on here about a book or cook book for the post op diet. It is exactly what i'm looking for, it has recipes and ideas of what you can eat, even went through the different phases of the post op diet but I can't remember what its called. If anyone knows what it is or knows of any other books that would help, I would really appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

Hello Dec 19 Sleevers. We are 1 month out today. YAHHH!!! My progress is still very very slow but am trying my best not to get discouraged. Stalled with the exception of 2 pounds in the last 2 weeks. I'm 15pounds down since surgery day. HW - 228 Pre-Op diet - 224 SW - 218 CW - 203 I guess I can't complain because my pre- opt diet was just 5 days so maybe I can say I've lost 21pounds in 1 month? Also I want to try the Ricotta Bake I found on here. Anybody else tried this just 4 weeks out?

Also these huge Vitamins make sick, any suggestions on wha tis not so nauseating? Thanks.

I had the vertical sleeve on Monday 1/14 and was ok the hospital for four days. It seemed so easy to do the liquid diet there and get the essential fluids and Protein, but now that I am home I don't feel like I am getting enough of either. On top of that my boyfriend and I live together, and I know that he has to eat (lol), but the smells remind me of the foods I used to love. It's torture. I am now constantly questioning my decision to have the sleeve surgery in the first place. Should i have let my love of food consume me? I am so uncertain right now. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  47. Started by Satchel,

Not having had "food" for three weeks (two pre-op and one post-op), and have three weeks left of a liquid diet, I am getting very discouraged. I know that I am not getting my 800 calories in each day, but time passes so quickly and then I realize I have not "eaten" anything for too long of a time period. I can hardly stand the shakes, drinks, yogurt, etc. I have my first post-op appointment with my doctor on Monday, so I hope to get some good advice from him. Three more weeks, though, before pureed foods. Is it okay to drink herbal teas, or green tea?

I am in the stage of blended chicken and full liquids. I tried something today I will check with my NUT on Monday to see if I can do it again. I put my chicken breast in the blender with some Franks Hot Sauce. My stomach took it fine. It was so good to have flavor I am afraid they will not allow it. Any thoughts??? I am 12 days post op and doing great just getting board.qqqq

Has anyone ever tried juicing for an extended period before surgery? My inspiration was watching the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I have put some thought into and have decided to do a 50 day juice fast (started today) followed by the surgeon's 10 day liquid diet. I think that there will be several benefits to doing this. If anyone has done anything like this I would appreciate some input/feedback on my thoughts below... 1) Obviously...Head start on my weight loss. 2) Load up my body with nutrients prior to surgery. 3) Most importantly...I am thinking that this will be a great test into how I can adapt to a different way of eating, challenge me by l…

I am in the paperwork started, met with the doctor, waiting for insurance approval, etc. phase of this procedure. This is a great forum, I've learned so much already! I'm trying to start making changes now so the pre-op diet will be an easier transition. I have a lot of room for improvement! Among other things, I scarf my food down in lion-sized chunks. I have just discovered that I really don't like chewing my food as much as is needed. I get to chew 18 and then I almost can't help swallowing. I really dislike the texture of food when i chew it to a paste. Is this just years of habit? I'm fine with things that are pureed or mush before they go in my mouth, but making th…
