Dont flame me

Ok. I'm not complaining. I'm not saying that I cant do the preop diet. I'm not lamenting about not being able to go without good because I need bacon and chocolate.

What I AM saying is this: since so many surgeons all have a different PRE op diet, is it safe to assume that I can pick another strict preop diet? Especially If I do it for 2 weeks vs the 1 that is required for my bmi.

I was choosing between 2 different surgeons. The other surgeon gave me a choice between 2 weeks low fat low carb or 4 days of only yogurt. This surgeon I chose says one week of

shake

shake

4 oz lean Protein

Shake if needed

Metamucil for hunger

What if I were to add super low carb low fat Proteins to this plan? Say

Shake

Egg whites

Shake

tuna

Shake

Ya think?

I'm not looking for ways to break rules. I'm just remembering my hcg days where I was eating 500 calories a day, and was sure I'd be in the hospital after day 4. i found myself on the floor thinking about orange juiced and shaking and woth serious fatigue that left me on the floor. I have 6 kids to take care of. Stairs to climb etc.

I still have about 4-5 weeks until I need to start. I'd like to plan ahead a little though.

My surgeon doesn't require a pre-op diet. Like you said every Dr seems to be different. I ate a normal diet right up to the day before surgery. I had been on 6 months of nutrition classes, so my diet was no longer fast food and junk, but I wasn't drinking Protein shakes (GAG!!!!).

I had no pre-op diet either. Had dinner at 8pm the night before surgery!

Did your surgeon explain WHY he/she wanted you to do a pre-op diet? To shrink your liver? To lose weight? That will help you make an informed decision.

My surgeon didnt require a pre op diet either. Had a grilled cheese and lemonade as my "last meal" the night before and then milk of magnesia.

Every surgeon is different. Perhaps the 4 days would be easiest for you as they are the shortest?

Well, I've been being pretty good and avoiding that stuff for almost a week now. My goal is to get under 220 before surgery (225.6 today) so I'm pretty good and it's not so much the junk I'm afraid of. I really just want real food. Even if it doesn't taste wonderful. Lol

I'm jealous of the other PRE opers who get to eat!

Seriously change, the yogurt diet woul float my boat, but that is the diet of the OTGER surgeon. The one I'm not going to. I'll email my surgeon with my questions. I hate being the "thorn in his side"

What if you were to freeze for of the shake into ice cube like pops? May help with the need to chew?

I'm currently on the pre-op diet and I can tell you honestly that I had my share of food funerals up until maybe a couple of days before I had to start the pre-op diet. So much so that I had gained weight and my BMI was getting really close to 50, which would have meant that I had to pay $500 more for surgery. That has been a big motivator in helping me to stick to the pre-op diet and I have lost 6 pounds already in the week since I started it. It really has not been that hard to stick to it, but I think I was ready--I had honestly gotten sick of eating junk in the days before I started it. I'm committed to doing the work before and after surgery that it takes to be successful. The only slight modification that I made to the diet that I was given is that I allow myself broth and other sugar-free liquids if I feel the need (saw this in other pre-op diets that are otherwise identical to mine), but I haven't much. My pre-op diet looks like this:

B: Protein shake

L: Protein Shake

D: salad with Protein (I was not given the 4 oz limit, so I have not limited myself to 4 oz. of meat necessarily)

Snack: another Protein Shake if needed

I relied on that additional protein shake (160 cal) the first few days, but after that, I chose broth (30 cal) instead. Last night, I did neither, but if I feel hungry later after dinner, I am comfortable with either of these choices.

I am not a doctor, but my ultimate advice to anyone who feels that they want to decide on their own about the pre-op diet is to make the decision based on your BMI. The closer it is to 50, the more likely that you have a fatty liver (although I do have 2 relatively skinny friends who were diagnosed with fatty liver disease because they eat fast food ALL the time), so I would suggest doing the full 2-week diet. If your BMI is lower, maybe you have more leeway. Good luck!

My surgeon explained to me that one of the reasons that he puts people on the pre-op diet is so that they get a good understanding of how their diet is going to change post op. I'm just wondering it you couldn't do a hybrid of both. I'd hate think what will happen post op when you are pretty restricted for quite a while.

Honestly the pre-op diet was rough. In fact I didn't follow through with it all the way. However I really regret not sticking withit. Any weight you can lose pre-op will be of benefit to you. Also it will make you procedure go much smoother. My recovery was slightly longer than average because I wasn't able to lose enough weight. However I'm now down 40 pounds so I can't complain. Just do the best you can!

The rational side of me says to go ahead and switch things up as long as you don't go overboard.

The irrational side of me says, No way, you can't do that! It's not fair to me because I had to suffer through TWO WEEKS of only Clear liquids on my pre-op diet. That's right, no shakes, no yogurt, and certainly no tuna. I got crystal light and Jello for two weeks. Surely for my injustice, you should also suffer!!! ;)

Well. This isn't as much about the need to chew or not being done with junk. I'm already eating fairly healthy, exercising lightly and trying to lose before my surgery date. It's more about that "I might pass out" feeling that I'm afraid of. I need my energy. I suppose though, I'll have to get used to what it feels like to have less calories anyway, since that's probably more calories than ill he gettin post op.

Icon, that's right!! salad with Protein. We're both going to mi doctor. :) I'm going to Garcia though. So would you say you mentally and physically just kindof adjust after a couple days on the shakes?

I'm sure people vary the pre op diet to fit their own needs without any consequence, however I would talk with your surgeon about modifying the diet and not go behind his back about it. He might help you come up with something workable that will still achieve the goals he has set. Every doc has a different pre op diet but they all prescribe it for a reason. If your BMI is at a certain level, fatty liver is a risk. Getting off any additional weight can be nothing but a benefit to you. I did 2 weeks of liquids ( that includes drinkable soups) and really it was fine. It's not like hcg where you're limited on calories.

Oh man!!! That's torture!!! It's clear that you took the "easy way out". *wink win

Curvy j, thanks for your input. Okay, if y'all did it, I can. I did email him though for the reason you mentioned. I'm not about going behind his back. He's in mx, I'd be heartbroken if I had to come home with a fatty liver!!!!

Yeah, I definitely missed being able to eat whatever I chose the first few days (oh, the food commercials killed me on day 3!) and it wasn't even a craving for junk food, just to be able to chew, but ultimately my body and mind adjusted. I went grocery shopping with my bf last night--regular groceries for him and post-op stuff for me--and I was not even bothered by all of the junk food in the aisles or the delicious smells coming from the deli, so it's definitely gotten easier.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
