Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

How can I get rid of my arm fat? I'm losing every where except my bingo wings. Help?!?

  2. If you have read any of my recent posts, you can understand I enjoy fitness as a post op VSG. Pretty sure it is my transfer addiction from previon version of self! I know there are tons of other fitness enthusiasts out there from long distance bikers, to runners, to cross fitters, to power lifters, to (fill in the blank). The question I want to pose to VSG today: what is your 5-10 year plan with regards to fitness? What are your short term and long term goals? Here is what I have been thinking about recently: 1. Summer 2014 - qualify for regional cross fit competition 2. Summer 2015 - qualify as a finalist in regional cross fit 2. Summer 2016 - transition into pa…

Which Polar HRM would you recommend? I am thinking about the FT40 or the FT7, but am open to suggestions. I work out 4 days a week - zumba, HIIT, Body Pump, Warrior Workout, Step My goal is that I would like to know how many calories I am trying burning when I work out. I am ONLY interested in workout calories burned, not necessarily calories burned for the day (steps taken, et cetera)

Has anyone used the IT Works wraps?? I ordered a box of 4 last night and they'll be arriving next week!! They're supposed to reduce cellulite, stretch marks and make me lose inches!! I'm mostly wanting them for the stretch mark and cellulite benefits, I have a lot of stretch marks on my stomach and don't think I'll ever be able to wear a bikini even if I do lose all my weight!! If anyone has used them I'd love to hear feedback!!! XOXO

which one do you guys think is better? I personally like the steam room. My gym has both a steam room, sauna, hot tub, indoor and outdoor pool, and of course all the workout equipment needed. Plus free tanning. I love it. I want to get a good workout then sit in the steam room for like 20 minutes then take a shower, then to the pool.

So I have been looking around researching different information sources on lifting specifically relating women and what are some of the goals, timeline, workout plan etc., that I can aspire to. Holy Crap there is a lot of information out there and everyone and their mom seems to have a differing opinion. So I thought I would ask you guys! What are some of the forums/blogs/website you follow? I honestly am not sure what I am looking for. All I know is that I love lifting weights and I never thought I would and want to learn more!

Overhead lifts with zero core and lower body movement with no jerk is one of my most challenging lifts. It is all arms and shoulder strength. When it gets heavy i really lose my ability to explode from a clean to straight arms up in the air. I am pressing 150 today as my max. For overhead lifts, you definitely hit a wall in a matter of only 2.5-5 lb increase. The reason why I am writing this thread is I need some advice on how to get stronger faster so I can lift much more for a max. If I am going to transition into the Olympic lifts soon, I better be able to do the overhead lifts with heavy weights. I have found that doing military presses and full dive bombers r…

  12. I finally got approved and transitioned from toning sessions to heavy lifting. I'm starting out "slow" (by slow I mean lifting twice a week, kind of like a "weekend warrior" kind of thing) due to my schedule and four heathens (I say that with love), ranging in age from 2 to 10. Today's session was full body, I worked my biceps, triceps, lats, quads, hams, calves, pecs, as well as the posterior, medial, and anterior deltoids. Each exercise consisted of three sets, 90 sec rests when I transitioned to the next exercise, and 30 sec rests between each set; 8-10 lifts until failure. If i failed before the 8-10, I switched to a lower weight and pushed until failure. OH MY GOSH, …

I was wondering if anyone else has this issue? When I get too hot I start to feel extremely nauseous. I have delayed starting a workout regimen because of this. It's not just once in awhile, it is literally anytime I feel hot. It happens even when i am in an air conditioned area. Did anyone else have this problem? If so did anything help you out? I am four months out. HW 229, SW 214, CW 162 RNY 3/14/13

I am concerned and confused. I have now lost 35lbs, and am almost 2 months post-op. I weight once a week, on Sunday. I have noticed that my FitBit Aria is reporting that my body fat % is still pretty high. Its usually around 43-45%. Sooooooo.....what am I losing exactly? Just muscle?! Or am I losing both fat and muscle, which would cause the BF% to relatively remain the same? I don't know what all to tell you, so if you have questions about what I am doing and eating etc....please just ask! Should I even be concerned with it at this point? Please and thank you! On my first day though I woke up early and was the first person to the gym! It felt good to be THAT guy in the gym working out at 7 a.m.!! Started my journey at 369 (March 1st). Surgery on May 6th (333). Today's weight 303.

Interesting thing happened today after doing some dead lifts. Instead of gripping the bar, I held onto the bar loosely with my fingers, letting gravity hold the bar in place. The end of my finger tips turned white. Is the usual artifacts of lifting like this? It took 15 minutes for blood to seep back into fingers. They are still a little white. It was a very weird feeling to have rest of hand pumped with blood, but none in fingertips. Kind of like frostbite feeling. Any thoughts? I thought gripping hard would do this, but I did exact the opposite with no grip. I did a warmup run before lifting at home. Now onto my body weight without! Fun stuff!! [ATTACH]16035[/A…

How many of you have actually reached your healthy BMI according to the BMI chart? I was telling a coworker today that my suggested weight is 120. She's a very frail looking woman & she said she weighed 120. I'm not sure 120 is right for me. Am I just making excuses?

  27. Therefore it makes you weigh more. I just started an exercise program (my own homemade one but hey, something is better than nothing). I have been doing some cardio off and on since surgery on 3/25/13 but nothing as consistently as I should have been doing. I own an elliptical. There is NO REASON I shouldn't be getting on it daily. Well, I have made a commitment to myself and to my husband (even though he has already bailed lol) that I am going to come home from work and get on the elliptical, adding a minute or two each day until I reach 30 minutes, maybe more later. And I will also do some weight training, upper body and some abs one night, lower body and more abs…

I increase my distance but my minutes walked decreases at I lose weight and get a little more "fit."--- 40 lbs lost as of yesterday, whoop whoop!--- I enjoy my walks, but in this hot/ humid south Louisiana weather, I have to walk early in the morning for it to be tolerable. (The 60 yr old women put me to shame jogging at noon in my street! Lol) Anyway, I wanted to have an alternative for when its just too hot or raining outside, so I picked me up a couple workout DVDs-- one of them being Taebo. I totally forgot what a workout it is! Protein synthesis and builds muscle that can lead to a higher metabolism. In the same way that strength training can create an anabolic environment that helps burn fat, performing sprints does the same by temporarily boosting growth hormones and testosterone. After performing sprints, metabolism is significantly elevated, meaning you continue to burn a higher number of calories, even at rest. That means that you can cut your workout time in half and still get the results you’re looking for. Sprinting can take the form of running, cycling or even rowing. A great starting point is maintaining a sprint for 8 seconds with 3-5 minutes of rest between bursts. Pushing a prowl…

  38. So I've decided that I'm ready to start amping up my work outs. I'm almost 8 weeks post op, and I'm feeling like I'm full of tons of energy. Although I've worked out before and have played sports most of my life I'm really thinking that having a personal trainer will kick my ass into gear. I know that if I work out just on my own I won't push myself as hard as I should. I've never had a personal trainer before, and I've had a few suggestions from different friends and met with two different trainers. There is one that I'm leaning towards, she seems peppy but I worry she might not be firm enough with me. The second has the personality of a wet mop, but from client testim…

8 weeks ago I was 1 month post op and decided to start the C25K program to help boost the weight loss efforts. I started out running at 30 second intervals and felt like I was going to D.I.E and could barely breathe... I almost quit. But I didn't...and I am so glad. Today I packed my kids in the buggy and ran 2 miles without stopping...30 full minutes. I didn't run fast, but I RAN. I've signed up for 2 5k runs in September/October and now I KNOW I can make that 3.1 miles. I love my lapband!

Just a few observations: - The rear tire didn't go flat the moment I sat on the bike! LOL! - It was MUCH easier than the last time I rode which was last Fall weighing approx. 315lbs. - I could ride a lot faster (less drag I guess) and was in a higher gear. - was able to stand up on the little hills (no big hills on the gentle trail I was riding) and it didn't totally wind me. I used to sometimes make it up the hills by leaning way forward but I was always afraid to stand up before because I had to slow down so much. I often had to get off the bike and walk it up the hills. - I had fun and can't wait til next time! pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013…

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I've been working out with a trainer 2x a week for about 4 weeks now, and do cardio (treadmill) on most of the other days. I'm building up my endurance pretty well, but I was almost completely sedentary. Last night I got a cramp in the front of my shin that literally twisted my foot up towards my leg and just wouldn't quit! Took about 25 minutes to work it out. Just wondering if this is a result of beginning to exercise, or something else like not enough fluids or Protein (or something else I haven't thought of)?

How does it differ from strength training? Did you find it helpful? I'd be interested in any info - good, bad, ugly.
