Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Phoenix79,

It's my six week post op today and that means...I'm off my 15 lbs lifting weight restriction and can do other forms of workouts other than walking (boring boring boring!!). Yahoo! I celebrated today by doing a belly dancing workout video and I even wore a hip scarf with jangly coins. I probably looked like a complete idiot but it was fun and I'll get better. My husband watched me for a bit with a smile on his face and said "cool" a couple of times. Maybe I'll keep this up! . Zumba, salsa and ballroom dancing are next...once I get a bit lighter, it's back to tap dancing!

  4. I have been walking mornings and evenings since 2 wks after surgery. I am loosing inches every where, but the stomach area is taking it's sweet time. Don't get me wrong, it is going down, but not as quick as legs, arms, face, etc. I need to add more than just walking. I was just curious if someone was the same as me and added something and started seeing a change in the stomach area.

I've never had an activity monitor, and I hear lots of good things about the FitBit One. However, I just saw this soon-to-be-releaed fitness monitor, the Pulse, in an article, and it looks as though it can do everything the One does and has a heart rate sensor. http://www.withings.com/en/pulse/#catch-phrase It mentions that it links to the My Fitness Pal app...is that how most of you track your intake, etc?

Now isn't that a mind bender? What is an exercise that you hate so much, you LOVE to hate it because it is so good for you? Mine used to be pull-ups. Pull-ups are ok now that i can do 10-20 unassisted in a row. Now I love to hate toes to bar exercise. This is essentially where you hang from a high metal bar with your arms straight and you have to use your core strength to get your toes to touch the bar where your fingers are at or above the bar. My trainer made me do almost 200 of these today. And today was my first exposure to them!! Yup- I love to hate T2B exercises and need to get good at them. They are good for me I hate you so much I love you T2B!!!! better st…

  8. I was in a car accident on my way to my very first day back at work after surgery, and the dash came up and smashed my knee. My tibia was fractured, the acl is completely torn, and both menisci are torn as well. I'm on week 5 of crutches, and as soon as all the bruising goes away and the bone is healed, I'm gonna have to have surgery to fix the acl and menisci which will restart everything back to square one while I heal again. And apparently the healing process after an acl reconstruction takes up to a year. I was looking forward to exercising after surgery sooo much because I enjoy it, and my weight loss has slowed down considerably because I've been forced to r…

When is it ok to start lifting weights?

  10. I'm almost 8 weeks out and have been in the gym 3-5 times per week since Week 2. I do 30 minutes on the treadmill (started at 2.0, now at 2.5; fast for me) and work up a good sweat -- not making it rain, but I use the towel often. I then follow up with 15-20 minutes of weights, upper and lower body alternating days. The weird thing is that I continue sweating a little during strength training, during my short walk home from the gym, and for a good little while after I get home. I also begin to sweat when I do everyday activities that require a little exertion, such as running up and down the stairs (NSV!) or playing with a small child. Anyone else notice this? Any possibl…

  11. If anyone has been following my posts, one the topics i post frequently about is my struggle with flexibility and mobility as well as general back soreness / stiffness. I have been trying yoga for a long time (6 months) with no real strides. I stretch a lot before warming up and after cooling down for a workout. I also have purchased a couple of excellent books on the subject of flexibility and mobility titled " genius of flexibility" and "supple leopard." I am starting to work through both books and they are going to help, but it will take a while to absorb the information and put it into practice. I like the supple leopard is written by a Cross fit expert and it is c…

I have a really hard time getting to the gym. It's SO far away from my house and just costs too much money in gas. I try to go on weekends with my boyfriend to the one lower to him. During the week I haven't been getting much of anything in. I've started walking on my breaks at work. Just not sure how I should do it. It's .6 miles to walk around the building twice, which I can do on my 15 minute break. I get 2 breaks a day. Or I could walk around the building 4 times nonstop on my 30 minute lunch. Not sure which would be better or worse, splitting it up or continuous. I've heard mixed things. Also going to start trying some crunches at home.

Recently I have been feeling like I am going to throw up after a workout for last week or so. It lasts for about 20 minutes then subsides usually after a protein shake, drinking water/BCAA or a combination of both. It is a sign of overtraining or just that my workouts are hard? Do not read anything more into this message then is written. I love the challenge of working out an hour a day really hard and am only trying to understand where this nauseous feeling is originating from. I have been working out nonstop 5-6 days a week for about 6 months at an intense level ( kind of like an athlete).

When lifting, is failure being able to complete your last rep but struggling to do so? Or is it not being able to complete that last rep? For you C25K people, on the last day of the week are you completing that run before moving on to the next week? Ex: being able to run the full time of 3 min runs on week 3 before moving to the 4 and 6 min runs of week 4?

  16. Mystery of all mysteries... I just ran a report for the last week of my recorded data from my Link. Calculating my calorie deficits for the last week, I should have lost 3.53 pounds over the last 7 days, and you know, my measured loss was 3.6 pounds. I love it when my body does what I tell it to! And I particularly love it when my gadgets are accurate! (This has not been a paid presentation for the Bodymedia Fit Link... I promise!)

Joking, but i do need to strengthen my body. what has worked for everybody?

  18. When working out, do you go by how many calories you burn during a session or just workout for a certain number of minutes, like an hour? I'm trying to get an idea of what others are doing. I'll be 4 months post-op on August 8th. Also, how many days a week do you workout and for how long at a time (for those of you that just go by a certain number of minutes, not calories burned)?

I was cleared to exercise a week after surgery. I did so with religiously. 30 min cardio and 30-40 min weight training per workout. My summer job is in construction. So now i am back to work the last 10 days and have not been at the gym do to time and energy. However I am physically working 10 -12 hrs a day and have actually lost more weight than before. Does the physical work count ( maybe not for cardio) ? I go back to my other job (teacher) in September so I will resume gym for sure then. Here are my stats and thanks in advance for input. I'm with Aetna signature administrators and they said that there is no coverage for weight loss surgery even with letter of medical necessity. My bmi is 52 and I'm suffering at this point. I don't have the money to pay out for the surgery. I'm going to the seminar at the hospital anyways because they said that they may help get me financial assistance from the hospital but I think my hubby may make too much money. Anyone have this experience?

I was banded back in November 2012 and have lost almost 90lbs (YAY!) However, I have yet to be in the green zone with my band. The first 50lbs was due in large to the band and healing process after surgery, but I then hit the gym and I have been going to the gym 5-6 days a week and have a personal trainer 3 days a week. The least amount I spend at the gym is an hour but sometimes with training can be there for 2 hours. I find myself still eating large portions (Normal size meals) as well as eating in between meals because I work out so much that my metabolism is kicking in for food every 2-3 hours. I normally will eat Breakfast, then 2-3 hours after have a Protein s…

I had a short, but very interesting conversation with my SIL's husband and boyfriend last night with regards to lifting and strength building. Our discussion went into the use of hgh in addition to their side effects. One of them used to be a trainer, but has since let himself go. The other is like myself: small waist, broad shoulders and strong. He has also been lifting for a long time and he has the muscle to show for it. He also explained that each one of us are born with a certain set of muscle cells that can not be changed, except with supplements like hgh. Lifting essentially only affects the muscle cells we are born with. It does not create new muscle. things li…

  30. Alcoholism and drug addiction are the most common addictions and these are considered as illnesses which needed serious treatment. Alcoholism is an uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic drinks which affect the brain but with proper treatment, the damaging effect to the brain could be stopped. Drug addiction on the other hand is a complex disease which also affects the brain, it is a drug seeking behavior regardless of the obvious fact that it has negative consequences. But with the help of expert psychiatrists and psychologists as well as with a tranquil and beautiful residential treatment center , it will be successfully treated. Residential treatment centers are often …

This condition can be caused by too much physical activity where excessive breakdown of muscle tissue occurs combined with dehydration according to how my trainer described it yesterday. You would think to solve the dehydration problem with drinking a lot of coconut Water, but that might actually introduce rhabdomyolysis . Basically, your kidneys shut down from too much potassium in the blood stream. She said that marathoners, big lifters or very active conditioners ( eg cross fit, sport training) are the people who should watch out for it. 4 hours of insanity DVD a day might cause it? That last one is just me thinking out loud. The reason my trainer brought this up …

I haven't been swimming since my LB surgery in January, and while we were in Yellowstone this last week the families wanted to go swimming. Well I am not a cork I have never had a problem treading Water, when I jumped in with 60 pounds less fat I sank like a rock, it took everything I could do to keep my head above water. I honestly believe if I had breathing gear, I could have taken a stroll along the bottom of the river. Well, at least I won't need as much weight the next time I go scuba.

I am still somewhat active on Saturday, but do not do a formal strength training workout most of the time (this weekend an exception).. On Sunday, I typically do not do anything more then stretching, yoga, walking or a warmup type workout. I have not had any problems with this approach to resting, but I am wondering if it is ideal. Sometimes I feel like I do not need 2 days of rest every week. Furthermore, I think back to back rest may also be compromising my muscle growing process. Don't know, but it is a theory.
