Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

WOW is all I can say. Has anybody tried this style? I add this 1 or 2x weekly to my workout schedule. Its amazing. Google this if you've never heard of it!

Today i sat in my car, outside the gym in the parking lot, gripping the stiring wheel until my knuckles went white. I am embarrassed about the way I look, and how I think my body will look whilst exercising. I can just feel people staring at me thinking 'what is she doing here, I wish I didn't have to look at that.' I know that this is exactly where I need to be but I feel like such a novice that I sould be doing the work at home. The truth is I need to be shown what to do, I need help. I know I can't be the only one who feels this way. This is YEARS of social programing by angry teens, coworkers, and strangers, talking and joking about the way I look. How do you get over…

Does anyone solely do their exercises at home? I get up now at 5am and walk down to my apartment gym to walk/run on the treadmill but I'm about to move and won't have that luxury. I don't want to join a gym because I want to work out early in the morning only and I know myself enough to know I won't drive that early. I have access to a treadmill when we move that I can have in my spare room so I was thinking about getting a couple of weights (dumbbells or kettlebells) and just making it a workout room. Does anyone else do this? Has it worked for you so far? or do you prefer using a dvd workout? hmm...

  4. Just wondering what kind of cardio would be most effective in helping me to shed this belly? My arms and legs lose weight fast but i find it difficult to shed belly fat and back fat. I look like an orange on sticks!

My port used to be lower, closer to the side of my belly button, but when I had my TT in March they relocated it higher up to essentially my ab area. As I cut fat and my abs start peaking out I'm becoming increasingly concerned about it sticking out a lot- has anyone had this experience, did you learn to live with it, or did you have it moved? and if so, to where? thanks in advance!

Hi, has anyone experience left shoulder pain while running? It feels like the pain I would sometimes get when I eat too much...and I know that could hurt your band. I wonder if I can keep running without hurting something? Before the band, I would get pain in my left side sometimes when I started to run. Could if be the same kind of pain??

Mobility and stretching are very important, if not more important, then working out in the journey to good fitness. Two books I highly recommend: 1. The genius of flexibility by Bob Cooley http://www.amazon.com/The-Genius-Flexibility-Stretch-Strengthen/dp/0743270878/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382630726&sr=8-1&keywords=genius+of+flexibility 2. Supple leopard by Kelley Starrett http://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Supple-Leopard-Preventing-Performance/dp/1936608588/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382630649&sr=8-1&keywords=supple+leopard You will thank me for these. Trust me. Both are excellent and part of my daily "study." You can find both on Amazon. G…

To follow up on my last thread, the following are two good tools for mobility: A roller: I like rumble roller and the grid Roller. I like to use them on shoulders, upper back, it bands and quads. The grid Roller has some good DVDs to help use it and strengthen core. Rumble roller: http://www.roguefitness.com/rumble-roller.php The grid http://www.roguefitness.com/the-grid-2-0-orange.php Lacrosse balls: I like to use them for mashing and flossing the shoulder, upper back, lower back, it bands and gluts. For me, my tight area is left side hip region. The lacrosse ball really helps there. You can find them on amazon or at a place like Sports Authority and Big 5.

So yesterday I am on the treadmill doing WK9/Day3 of the 10K program and my ipad that I am watching keeps wanting to fall off of the treadmill. I have never had this problem, ever! But I just could not get the thing to say up there and I couldn't figure out why. Anyway - I am about 1 min from the half way point and it finally falls, hits the treadmill belt and shoots like a rocket between my legs. So I have to stop the treadmill and pick my ipad up. Some of you may read this and think "ok - whats the big deal", right? But for me mentally it was a huge deal. I tried to get back on, but mentally I just couldn't get back into it. My time was now messed up since I technical…

So, I've always been the type that hates exercise, sweat, getting hot, etc. Monday, I ran for the first time in... 6-7 years. I ran 1 mile, with breaks. Today, I ran another mile. Without stopping. Clocked in at 12:41. It is slow, but I'm super proud What is a realistic running regimen for me? My dream has always been to run a 5k. I just never thought Id last half lap around the track. I plan to run a mile 3 times a week. It's one of my biggest NSV: I can't believe I can run! Sure I'm slow, but wow... Running??? Do you think a 5k is something that I could shoot for and how would I go about training for this? Any and all advice is much appreciated! I'm a fis…

Sunday I did the Insanity workout. I was so sore Monday and Tuesday and I weigh in today and I am up a little over a pound! Can t be related to how sore I was? My food I take was the same so I know it can't be my eating. It's not that time of month. I know I shouldn't be so worried about a pound but I'm just wondering if exercise causes weight gain? When I was working out I felt fine...I went at my own pace and I took breaks and drank Water. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone I started out walking in the cemetery and park, a mile per day. Last week I joined the local gym and have been doing the treadmill and bike. I have had trouble with shin splints so I didn't do the treadmill last night but did five miles on the bike. I really don't know how to use any of the Nautilus equipment and they don't have trainers. The elliptical kicks my butt, can't do but a few minutes. I ordered a step aerobics DVD, I'm not brave enough to go to a Zumba class yet. Any suggestions appreciated.

Just wondering I am a bit confused. I am on 1000-1200 cal per day and exercise 500-600cal per day. Am I meant to eat extra say 1500-1700cal per day to compensate for the exercise and then my day to day living runs on the remaining 1000-1200 cal or do I only eat 1000-1200 cal and then burn 500-600 and then run off for the rest of the day with 500-600cal. I hope this does not sound confusing.

Question...how soon after post op did you start working out? What was the intensity/type of exercise? And how quickly were able to increase the workouts? I know everyone is different. I have been doing crossfit for the past seven weeks and am hooked. I have surgery next Monday. Just trying to get an idea of how quickly I can get back into it once surgery is over. I plan to talk to my doc Wednesday to get his advice too. Just wanted to hear from some people who have been there, done that.

Today I went to my surgeon's office and had a metabolic test. This test measures your resting metabolic rate to see how many calories you burn while you are resting, while you are active and while you are exercising. I found the whole experience to be very interesting and to be a very worth while test for those that are able to take one. I learned that you actually burn the most of your calories for the day doing nothing but resting. Simple breathing and relaxing burns off more calories then you burn killing yourself in the gym for hours on end. If you walk for 30 minutes you are burning a max of 200-300 calories. Resting, I am burning over 2000! Doing simple every …

How do they afford to almost GIVE away memberships to a really great gym? Just got a membership yesterday after taking the tour. What a great gym. They have about 150 cardio machines and about 75 weight machines. In addition, they have 2 separate areas. 1 for a 30 minutes total body workout (similar to curves) and 1 a 12 minute ab workout circuit. They have a big flashing light that goes off if ur a "Lunk" (someone who bangs the weights, wears a muscle shirt, and drinks Water from a 1 gallon container). No lunks allowed (meaning no serious body builders, just plain ole folk looking to increase their health) With the $1 for the 1st mth and $20 a mth (they also have a $10…

I read today that an ample amount of magnesium is required in the blood stream to promote lean muscle and reduce body fat. This is especially true for those that consume large quantities of Protein. Did not know this. I seem to have a somewhat difficult time building muscle and real strength despite eating large amount of protein and consistent training week after week. The recommendation dose of magnesium is 900 mg daily, perhaps spread out in 3 doses of 300 mg to minimize diarrhea triggered by taking recommended dose all at once. The muscle growth comes from the ionization or breakdown of magnesium in the blood stream. Sorry I do not have more information nor do I hav…

Went roller skating last night, first time in a year and a half. I used to be on a local roller derby team, but with school and life found myself overwhelmed so I took a break. Anyway I can most definitely feel it today! According to calculators I would burn approximately 870 calories and hour doing that and boy is it fun!

Well I, have had a lot of success without working out but now I want to help myself starting toning up and gaining some more muscle. I don't feel as strong as I used to and I have been out of the gym for way to long. All my workouts will consist of mild strength training and cardio. I only plan to work out for 30 minutes about 3 days a week. I'm just looking to improve my health and reach my goal weight. Is there anyone else that works out 3 days a week for 30 minutes, any negatives or positives by doing so ? Please share.

I actually jogged on the treadmill tonight at an incline... granted it was only like 30 seconds to a minute, but I did it. I am very excited for myself.

  44. My surgery is 4 weeks from tomorrow. **GASP** I know that being in better physical shape (not the round shape I am today), will help with the recovery from VSG. With that said, I turned on my GPS and drove the 2 miles to my gym (note sarcasm). I haven't been to the gym in months because I've been on 6 month pity party and I haven't wanted to go. I've been doing some walking, but not enough. Again, that pity party thing getting in the way. I have been having this internal dialogue with myself the past few weeks about going to the gym. I tell myself I'm going to wake up early and go, but that hasn't happened. I'll go on my lunch hour, but something always comes up…

So I have always been an all or nothing kind of girl and I can't wait to get back to my crazy gym routine! 6 weeks seems like such a long time to wait before getting back to spin, running, lifting and crossfit. I am a gym addict and this is killing me. I have been walking some, but it feels so unfulfilling. Did anyone else have this long of a wait to get back to the gym?

In the last 3 weeks I have been religiously working out on my Bowflex and feel as if I have toned quite a bit. The downside is that muscle weighs more than fat and I cannot seem to make my scale move right now. I've lost 45 lbs since beginning this journey but only 20 of that since my surgery on 4/17 this year. I'm eating right but also having a glass of wine each night (this was okayed by my doc and nutritionist). The good news is my clothes are fitting better (I'm down a couple of sizes) so that is an NSV I suppose. Has anyone else experienced this? I see my surgeon tonight and wonder what he might suggest.

  50. Hi everybody, I am a sleeve vet who recently went through some non-VSG related health stuff that has kept me out of the gym for over 2 months and also has me on a post-op style diet again. I don't want to lose muscle mass or strength, I know that I already have, I feel so weak. Does anyone have any advice on how to return to lifting? Can't cardio atm beyond very gentle yoga.
