The hospital and affiliates that my surgeon does surgery at has a nice gym and when anyone has bariatric surgery they offer 3 months free. What makes it even sweeter is that if I use it ten times per month the gym extends the free membership 3 more months! You might want to ask at your surgeons office if they offer anything like that. I plan on taking advantage of it.

Back in baby's arms... So excited that I got back to my CrossFit box this week. On Thursday my coach had me do 5 x 500 row, with a minute rest between each; then we followed that with 50 sit ups and 50 squats, mostly to see how I would handle it. (The regular WoD included bench presses; not there yet.) Instead of waiting until Saturday to come back I went back in last night (Friday.) Saturdays at our gym-especially the first Saturday of the month- are usually workouts like Murph. But last night was Helen: 3x 400 m run, 21 kettle ball swings, 12 pull-ups. My heavy mod was 3x 500 row, 21 kettle ball swings (light weight), 12 ring rows. And I finished it in just under…

Sorry if this has already been covered... I searched the forums, but didn't find anything . I am pre-sleeve and filled out health questionnaires from a couple of different surgeons.. they both asked about my high school weight and my wedding day weight. Not super typical for me (obviously!!), but at those times my BMI was about 21. My lowest BMI after having kids was probably 23-24. Now it's been 33 for about 3.5 years. Is there a BMI that a majority of adult, sleeved women seem to drift to after they get on a fitness roll? Thanks for any insight !

I have just booked myself onto a spinning class on Wednesday! Feeling nervous, but reassured by the man who is taking the class. He has lost over 3 stone and promised me I could take it at my own pace. I would never thought 4 months ago that I would have done this in a million years. Feeling excited

Hey Everyone, I would just like some advice on cardio. As far as how many minutes? Intensity? Interval training? I was doing 90 minutes on the treadmill with a high incline. Due to ortho problems I'm going to try the ARC machine. Do I do HIIT? And for how long? I'm not so concerned about pounds, I'm more interested in lowering body fat %.

Need some ideas...... I was sleeved in August and I am down 80lbs overall. I've been happy with my results so far, but I feel like I have lots to learn in the gym. Right now I am working out 3 days a week by doing a 10min warm up walk on the track followed by 20-30mins of varying intensity cycling on the stationary bike ending with some arm focused weight machines. I try to either get ab focused workouts in or just mild cardio (treadmill) for 3 days and one day of rest. With all of this I think I should see more firming instead of more jiggles! Any tips on getting a good training routine without hiring a personal trainer?

NSAIDs are not good for those looking to benefit from Protein synthesis (aka muscle growth) following exercise that breaks down the muscle. I want to share the following study below with others as I found it very enlightening. I have been researching this connection between protein synthesis and pain medicine in order to understand my own lack of progress after months and months of "doing the right thing" in the gym and with my diet. I have been taking therapeutic doses of ibuprofen and some use of Tylenol to deal with back and neck inflammation unrelated to exercise. After finding this information, I have stopped taking the pain medicine cold turkey despite having …

OK gym rats (Butter, Fiddle, etc.): On all of my whole body exercises (push-ups, pull-ups, planks, lunges, squats) I'm doing 3 sets of 10 reps. Well, not the planks -- I just add time to those. On the rest, do I add more sets, or more reps? On my weight training, I'm doing 3 sets of 12 reps (to fail), and slowly adding weight until I'm actually getting "to fail." I've added about 10 lbs to everything over the last two weeks. Do I add more sets, more reps, or keep adding weight? Thanks!!

I'm wanting to start to keep track of everything-food, exercise, weight, everything… There are two main applications that I'm aware of – one is called MyFitnessPal and the end there is live Strong… From what I could tell, both have pretty much The same features but, I thought I would see if anyone has tried either application and greater detail and had suggestions or thoughts on one over the other. Any information would be appreciated... The only thing that I'm finding about MyFitnessPal so far that I don't like is that I can't go backwards and enter and weights or measurements or anything like that so that's a bit perturbing. I know there are more apps out there too – I …

Alright...so...my dirty pleasure the last few months has been watching the last season of The Ultimate Fighter. I'm not sure why but it has... I would like to get myself a heavy bag for home so I can do some workouts. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't need to get the best out there, but I would like a decent bag. Also, does anyone have any good suggestions on DVDs for that type of workout?

I found this interesting study of the impact of caffeine on restoration of glycogen stores. Interesting! http://m.usatriathlon.org/about-multisport/multisport-zone/fuel-station/articles/post-workout-caffeine-consumption-recovery-tips-100510.aspx I am a strong supporter of using caffeine as a tool for better and more effective workouts. Using caffeine to aid in the recovery process is counter to what I thought I knew about caffeine after working out.

Hey fitness freaks....and wannabe freaks. Time for the November installment of the fitness challenge. To try to be more inclusive and get more participation, I'm going to open things up in a new way. The point of this challenge is to set a goal for yourself for the month of November. A fitness goal which will be challenging.....slightly more than you know you can do, more than you did last month. The goal needs to be a concrete measurable goal. The goal can be miles run, walked, biked, swam, ellipted or paddled....or a combination of all of them. But it can also be a goal of hours of exercise. 30 hours of exercise in a month is a challenging goal for many pe…

Guys and gals.......looking for some honest feedback here...... I'm at the gym at lunch today and I'm doing upper back (pullups, bent over rows, seated rows & rear delt flies). I usually do them in that order as well. So while I'm doing my pullups and bent over rows, I see this guy doing some stuff with dumbbells in the dumbbell section using several different sets of dumbbells while bouncing around all over the gym doing other things (different lifting stations, talking, etc). Every 5 minutes or so he would circle back to the dumbbell section and do a set or two and leave to use something else in the gym and come back. Anyway, by this time I'm well into my seate…

I would just like to be able to post my daily (or weekly) exercise just for encouragement and accountability. I will be 63 next week. My goal is to do something cardio-wise 45 minutes a day 4-5 x week. For me that will mean walking or bicycling. My band is fine but my butt is a little slow getting back in the groove. I did walk 2 1/2 miles today and it did include some hills. At this point in time I'm not interested in how fast or how far but rather doing something on a regular basis. With the cooler weather coming I will be doing some hiking in the woods. I applaud all of you who are already fit or on your way there with utilizing your band and moving your bodies. T…

I am going to seminar on 12/03 in Denver hosted by Dr. Neil Wolkodoff (www.cochss.com) on aerobic exercise and weight loss. Limited to 25 people and it's a hands on learning situation at a very large fitness store with lot's of aerobic equipment. The store is closed and he is doing the seminar just for us! The link is: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/exercise-and-learn-cardiovsacular-exercise-for-bariatrics-patients-tickets-9152205493?aff=es2&rank=1&sid=db587e05571011e3bad512313d095975 I have had really good experiences with testing and exercise consultations with him, so I highly recommend you do this if you are in the area!

Hi there all! I was sleeved on 9/9/13 and including preop weight loss I have lost a total of 95 lbs. for the past two months all I have been doing for exercise is water aerobics twice a week and walking. But I have noticed the the skin is really starting to sag I want to start toning by lifting weights but I have heard it slows the weight loss. And I am only getting in about 560cal a day all protein(70/80g protein a day) and that is all I can handle while getting in all my water(65-80oz/day). Now my question is this: will I continue to lose weight if I start lifting weights or will my body think I am starving and try to hold on to it?

Started running and I have gained 3 pounds. I am trying to not get discouraged but after 3 weeks I am back down the 3 pounds but now stuck. Has anyone else had a plateau and how do you break it?? I journalize what I eat and usually stay in the 800 to 1000 calories a day. I also run about 8 to 10 miles a week. Help? Does anyone have any ideas? I'm nervous that I won't get the last part of my weight off. Surgery was May 28 btw. Help!!!

Anybody here do any regular swimming? I've just started, hoping to train for a triathlon. I already run and bike but I haven't swam in decades. I'm really not good, my feet drag too low and I swallow enough Water to meet my daily hydration goals on each lap. If there are any good swimmers out there I'm open to tips.

I was just sleeved a week ago, and I really need to start exercising some. The problem is I can't get to a gym, and even if I could, I'm way too nervous around people to actually go. I'm also at school and/or working all day, so the only time I have to exercise is at night, and I don't really want to go walking around my neighborhood when it's dark. So I'd thought I'd get myself a treadmill, or maybe an elliptical, so I can walk in the safety and comfort of my own home. (And in front of my own tv haha). But the only ones I can find that are under $1,000 have weight limits of 300 or lower. Does anyone have any suggestions for some relativly inexpensive high capacity trea…

Random question. Do you count your pre and post workout shakes or bars as a meal or no? My surgeon has me doing 3 meals, no snacks, 60-80g of protein a day, and 90 oz of fluids. I do workout quite a bit weight lifting, and running, etc. I'm burning on average over 3000 calories a day and consuming 400-600 calories. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My situation is this: I am two and a half weeks post op. I am back to doing crossfit for my work outs 3 days a week and walking twice a day for thirty mins. Within a day I am getting in 15-20 grams of protein, no more than 400 calories and 64 oz of water. My question is this: Am I being counterproductive in my workouts because of my lack of protein? I am afraid that the weight I am loosing is muscle mass along with all this fat. I know that I need to increase my protein intake, and I am working on that. But can anyone guide me to some information on how to know you are getting enough nutrition to sustain a workout routine. Or if anyone would like to provide some of…

I'm getting a routine down, finally, with exercising. I get up at 5 a.m. and walk on my treadmill for 30 minutes. Gradually going longer and faster using more of an incline. After I get home from work I am usually too tired to exercise, I am a morning person. I want to start some kind of toning. I am really noticing the 'bat wings' lately and wondering what others have done to tone them. I heard it is best to tone as you go help not have soooo much lose skin. I have two different size hand weights and would like specific exercises or whatever works for you. My space around my treadmill is tight, I have tried to use them on it but some mornings I'm so tired I hold …

Just wondering if there is any sleevers who train MMA or Jits, and wondering how itd go with the contact etc. Also on the old bucket list is Triathlon. Ive got big plans after my sleeve OP. Scotty

Hi everyone - I am brand new to this. All of my pre-surgery appointments are done and I will be meeting with the surgeon soon to set my surgery date. Have any of you ever run a 1/2 marathon (or full marathon) post-surgery? I ran a 1/2 marathon two years ago and that is something that I would like to do again but am unsure that I will be able to. How is someone who has the RNY surgery able to get enough nutrients and calories in to be able to have enough energy for long-duration type activities? If anyone has any experience with this, I would love to the advice! Thanks!
