Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by FightingSleever,

I have been lurking for a time here now, but have yet to see anyone even mention my biggest concern. I am currently pre-op, about two months out still, so gathering as much info as I can now. My biggest enjoyment for exercise was martial arts, generally high impact, high contact traditional arts. Grew up mostly in Tae Kwon Do to give an example, so high cardio, lots of jumping and kicking. No one mentions anything about this sort of training after a sleeve. Is it possible? Has anyone had any success with it?

I have been walking the treadmill since the day after my surgery and recommend it to anyone who needs a simple way to get your exercise. Many doctors will tell you that walking is the best and most effective form of exercise. Also good for people with knee and hip problems that many overweight people have. I like the tread mill for a number of reasons. First, if you simply go out walking in your community, you will find that you stop to talk to friends and neighbors along the way. After you've been out for an hour, you think you had an hour of exercise. Not so. On the treadmill you have no such distractions. If you walk around your community, it's real easy to s…

I am 14 months out and have been trying to do more exercise. I am currently trying to do "more" than I have ever done before. I am in a group trying to do 100 miles of walking/running/biking over the next month. In addition to that, I am also getting ready to walk a 1/2 marathon in less than a month. And to top it all off, I am in my final semester of Nursing school. My problem is that I feel so weak and exhausted. I need help! Does any one know what I can do to make my muscles feel stronger, to get energy back and to fuel my body. Should I be doing more strength training? I am lost! I have never been good at this and just need some advice... Has anyone been thro…

Can real muscle growth be achieved when on a post-op 650 calorie diet? I am just over three months post-op, have lost 74 lbs, 94 lbs total. I do strength training with a trainer three times a week and cardio five times a week. Because my target weight loss was 225 lbs, I am still on a diet of 600-650 calories, 100-125 grams of protein,15-20 grams of carbs and 15-20 grams of fat per day. During my weight loss, I have lost over 17 total inches but almost 40% of that is muscle loss. I am prone to stalls that last for two weeks. I work out extremely hard but am completely frustrated that I have no muscle growth to show for it. Any thoughts or suggestions are most welco…

What kind of exercise is alright to do in the weeks after the op? I use the Nike NTC app 4 times week at the moment but should I just stick to walking/running after my op? And how long until I can get to more rigorous exercise (jumping, Zumba, medicine ball stuff etc)? I just want to hit the ground running and don't want to rely only on the smaller food intake

Doctor diagnosed me with severe left scapula dysfunction today. Right scapula is fine. The issue is that the muscles are way to short around the left scapula, disrupting my thoracic (sp?) stability and lots of shoulder / neck issues. I will be starting PT on Monday for at least 6 weeks. It was caused by computer work for most of my adult career. Sitting too much and not paying attention to good ergonomics until the daily pain just had to stop a few months ago. It is good to know why my overhead lifting I do is so weak and lacks power. No real growth in strength in the overhead lifts in many months despite awesome nutrition, consistent lifting and good sleep. Lots of lift…

  9. Hi, I have lost about 120 lbs with my band but started weight training with a lot of core. After 2 c-sections, lapband, gallbladder, and hernia repair surgeries my poor abdominal muscles have been through the ringer and were next to nothing! I haven't seen the scale move but I don't really pay too much attention to that but I can feel that my stomach is getting tighter as I can move my stomach muscles much better now than I have been in a long time. The downside to this has been that I am having trouble eating, especially after working out but even if I don't for a day at this point. I'm having trouble even drinking a Protein shake and need to drink it slowly so t…

Hello bandsters! I had my surgery 8/12/13 as some of you know and I was recently cleared by my doctor to do water aerobics and I started today! I absolutely loved it, me and my sister decided to do it together and even though we where the youngest ones in the class we had a ball the older adults in the class where very welcoming and supportive. I chose this workout because I have knee joint problems and I have issues out of my ankles sometimes and being in water working out felt wonderful. I just wanted to share my experience with everyone because I know you guys understand me and the things us chunky folk have to go through! love always, Steph

I just got banded today.. I play roller hockey on a somewhat competitive level.. Was wondering if there was anyone else that plays sports here and how long did it take till you were able to get back into playing? Also did you notice any differences with hydration/ playing with less in your system?

Oh my! I started doing kettle bells and am doing them 4 days a week with recovery workouts in between. I use either a 15 or 20lb KB depending on the move. In two weeks, I've suddenly gone up 4 lbs. NO CHANGE in my diet. In my 'pms' week and usually experience maybe a 1-2lb gain but it is quickly lost. But 4lbs?? Ugh. Have had a stressful week (2 elderly dogs had to be euthanized yesterday. Been preparing for a week).. No inches gained or lost. Any thoughts?? Think it's temporary? Just in that flux between building muscle and losing extra fat? Btw, I am 10 months out, down to 176 (was 172) from 285.

Am thinking of putting this on my birthday/Christmas wish list. Due to painful knees thought it might be more effective exercise for me, especially if I can actually use it. I can only do about ten min on my treadmill then my knees start catching and feel like pins being stuck in them. Anyone have one and is it a good workout ?

Started running 2 months before my surgery. Let me tell you it's not easy but I have pushed though the shin splints. I really like running I'm sick of shin splints and hoping will ease up and I will get faster after being sleeved. I can run 2 miles now without a break and did a 5K last month(not fast at all). How much easier is it getting for all you post opers?

  19. Am hoping to kick up my weight loss with this challenge over the next 6 weeks. I am aiming for at least 20 pounds. It's guided interval training/ cardio classes. I hope I can do it. I was sleeved 10 weeks ago and have lost 36 pounds. It is slowing down a lot already. I have 59 more to go. I hope this will work!

  20. I was cleared to do walking, treadmill walk, elliptical machine and stationary bike and regular bike on gentle rides. I'm joust curious how soon were others back to the gym. ? And what kind of activity level were you at. As soon as I drop some more weight I'm going to start to joke, with long term goal, half marathon next year. Short term, 5k Thanksgiving fun run walk. And amaybe a 10k for Run for the new year.

Yet wondering...if I am consuming some alcohol but staying within my calorie requirements and exercising...will that slow my weight loss? I love spinning and core exercises, tabata, etcetera but I also like a couple glasses of wine a couple times a week. I'm keeping my food carbs low, too. Just wondering about others experiences. FYI--I am almost 5 months out. Down 63 lbs--275 to 212. Eating about 1000/ day and exercising 4-5 times week with good workouts IMO.

  23. In the last week I have started a regimen of beta-alanine and creatine. My goal is to improve strength and metabolic conditioning with a dedicated supplementation program that includes these. I understand both of these take a while to load into the muscles (1 month for beta-alanine and 1 week for creatine). Both products i am using are from NOW foods. I like that the creatine is in crystallized form rather then powder form as was the last creatine I tried from AST. Ended up stopping the AST creatine after a while because it gave me terrible nausea . The NOW creatine does not do this. I am excited about the power and strength properties that will come from the use of…

  24. Forgive me if I do not scribe this right, but here goes. Recently, as in last couple days, I have been getting a weird snapping sensation in my forearms after doing lifts, such as the clean jerk or s n a t c h and other exercises such as pull-ups. I talked to the trainer during the WOD today and they hadn't heard of it. Suggested I switch to ring rows instead of pull ups. No pain or inflammation this evening. The last 4 days have seen a lot of arm work, even back to Saturday when we did rounds of 50 pull-ups and 50 snatches. I think it is the s n a t c h sets we have done 2 x since then along with the split jerks, strict presses and front squats that are stressing out my…

They had this and the salesperson said he had heard good things about it, (don't they all say that). http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=17905666 I bought a small container and THEN got home and did some reading... seems to be quite a bit of difference of opinion around the use of thermogenic's. The only info I could find on LBT about it was back from a 2006 post... http://www.lapbandta...nic#entry309188 I'm NOT using it for weightloss reasons, just as a pre workout Protein Drink. At 20 grams per 100 calories, its a good choice in that regards. So,…

I went with my mom and sister to a musical tonight and the parking garage elevator was packed after the show. So I decided to take the stairs 6 flights up instead with my mom. Last year, before surgery, we did the same thing and she left me puffing on the stairs a full flight behind her. THIS time, I was a full flight ahead of her, with her puffing behind me. I tell ya, that felt awesome- even though she's 65 with arthritis cancer and Chrohn's disease and premature senility. Lol. (My mom wanted me to add this. ... She's still really fit for 65 though!

To Celebrate, I'm going to spend the next 30 days doing something I've never done before.....I'm going to run 100 miles in the next 30 days. Certainly other people have done it...even people on this forum have done it. But it will be my biggest monthly total to date. I never ran a step voluntarily until last year. Since then, my life and body have changed so much.....I can't imagine not having this great gift I've found. To me running is like a newly found super power....one that I never thought I'd have. So I'm going to run 100 miles total between now…

I only started out about 3 weeks ago, so I am still quite unfit. When do you do what? I want to incorporate weight training as well as I've read it's actually also good for weight loss, not just the cardio. What does a good exercise plan look like? I only want to go 3 to 4 times a week. Please specify type of exercise and amount time and what when you are doing? Today will be my first exposure to this where we test several 1 rep max and then a 1 mile sprint. Mentally, I am trying to figure this out and am asking for advice. It will be PR day on back squat, strict press, dead lift and bench press. Then followed by a sprint. How is this going to work? The PR lifting is going to fatigue every major muscle group to failure. We get max 5 attempts on each lift to get to PR. Last week, we did a day of only running 3 1 mile sprints (about 5k) where my times were recorded as 5:15, 5:59 and 6:20. Fastest ever by major leaps and bounds for me. My mind is holding me back a little, remembering the fatigue that followed that evening. I wa…

Long story short...I hope :-) I had bulging discs at L4/L5 and L5/S1 in 2002...after losing a lot of weight. Both eventually ruptured in 2006. This ultimately resulted in a laminectomy/discectomy in 2007. Unfortunately, I gained back the weight plus some- sound familiar? One of my ultimate goals has been to run a 5K and then work up from there. I have 1 under my belt now and LOVED it. About 4 months ago I started having the same symptoms as I did back in 2002. A year ago today I couldn't stand for more than 10 minutes without breaking into a sweat and needing to sit down. Today I finished my first 5K. The fastest guy in my age group finished it in 22 minutes - it took me 4 times as long but I finished it! What made this even more special was being able to walk it with people from my support group for which many was their first 5K as well.
