Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

Hi post-ops, If you have a Fitbit or buying one, I started a group on Fitbit a year ago and we have slowly been growing. The problem is that fitbit does not have a search feature for groups. So you have to go page by page of groups to find the "Gastric Sleeve" group. Come join us (we have 16 members), so we can all stay motivated. Between MyFitnessPal and Fitbit, I stay very motivated. Maybe these tools can help you, too!

Anyone know if ON makes a good whey? I assume it is because their casein is top notch. I currently take and like synth 6 because it is a good mix of different protein types and it tastes good. However, I am considering the ON gold standard whey if others think it is good for muscle building and tastes good.

  3. Hi, I am heavily (no pun intended, l) involved in Roller Derby, and as some of you may know, it's a very aggressive contact sport. I am scheduling my procedure during our break in Dec, so that I will have the down time to heal. How long after surgery should I wait until I can return to the contact aspect of the sport? I can skate about 2-3 weeks after I was told, but I am wondering about the other part. ALSO.. What has your experience been with excess skin? I am terrified I am going to lose my weight but still look big because of all the excess skin I could/will have. Any way to help reduce it? ( before plastic surgery)

  4. Hello everybody. I just wanted to remind everyone of the VST Community Group called Houston Active Sleevers. I started it a very long time ago, just after my surgery, so that makes it about a year and a half old. Orignally the intention was to hopefully get a monthly group together to meet, talk and laugh and exercise. I thought we could center each meeting around an event or a new location each time so the same people would not have to drive huge distances to attend. I also want to share my favorite hang-outs and places to exercize, shop for awesome healthy foods and just kick back and enjoy my new self. If you are not a member, please consider joining. If I can …

Hi there, I am a week post-op as of yesterday. Two days after, I was walking around fine, now I feel so tired and week. I haven't been able to drink much of the diet, just getting Water in has been tough. Today I had about 1/4 of a Protein drink. I thought I would finish it before now, but I can't. I am sipping on some delicious low cal juice (15cals) with a straw. The straw seems to help me more with little sips. Before the surgery, I was trying to walk 30to 45 minutes with my dog at least 4 times a week. I can't even get out there for ten, is this normal?

While I know the "what do you think about going against my Drs advice" post are not the most popular, Im looking for some advice. I have been cleared for walking at least 30 min per day. My surgeon didnt specifically state no to the exercise bike but it is not listed on my little handout. At the original seminar for the surgery he said do whatever exercise you were comfortable with as soon as you were comfortable. Heres the thing, I dont have a treadmill. I have a recumbent bike, and an elliptical. I feel confident the elliptical is too much, I get tired in the shower, but I feel that recumbent bike and treadmill seem comparable. The only possible problem I can see is wit…

Has anyone found that they are able to minimize the sagging skin of "deflated balloons" by doing lots of muscle building exercise? I am a 55 year old woman who has long ago left fitness to others. I would like to start up again and hope that lifting weights might fill the soon-to-be-deflated-balloons with something solid. I am only a few weeks out from surgery but know that sagging skin will be in my future as the weight comes off. I'd like to minimize the extent of it. Any success stories out there?

The Beachbody folks have a new workout from the creator of Insanity, Shaun T. (Beachbody has several well known fitness DVD programs out, P90X, Insanity, Turbofire). Focus T25 is similar to Insanity, but is only 25 minutes long, five days per week and lasts for 60 days. Guess I am an easy sell, because I was very excited to receive this! It comes with a easy meal guide with few ingredients, a road map to take you through the program, and two different sets of DVD's. Although I only started this today, I am hopeful it will get me most of the way to losing my last 30 pounds. Anyone else doing Focus T25?

I will be out with a friend that has never rode the Zube Park area (extreme NW Houston, up past Cypress on 290), so we will be going it alone but you could join us, join one of the group rides, etc. After we are probably going to make smoothies, maybe some yoga an dthen probably a run to the Rawfully Organic saturday location. http://www.rawfullyorganic.com/ Everyone is welcome, but you will want to touch base with me before hand so we know you are coming and so we can find each other! I work out a a YMCA. I am currently doing cardio 7 days a week. I do 65 minutes on an eliptical trainer, I usually end up with about a 900 calorie burn. I would like to incorporate a weight regiment into my workout....But where to start. The YMCA people seem to have no clue, I haven't even been able to get the fitness assessment out of them that they promised when I joined up. How did you guys and gals find a PT that you can work with? How much is the going rate for such a service? How often does your PT actually work with you? I also have a non sleeve friend that is looking to shape up, is it out of the ordinary to find a trainer for both of us (and maybe even our t…

So at the gym I had a couple really amazing moments. First I weighed in out of ritual and found out I'm down a couple more pounds and I'm now 167. Woohoo! Which made me excited to work out even harder. Did a full 5k distance in a little under 29 minutes on the elliptical followed by half an hour of circuit training where I upped all my max weights. I was pretty pumped by this point so I hopped back on the elliptical to do my fastest mile ever, 8.30 flat! Added one more mile to make it an even 5 and then off to the massage chairs. I love days like today!!

Proud of my kids, proud of my husband. But never proud of myself. Until I jogged a 5k last weekend. I was dead last. But I didn't care. I jog/limped. But I didn't care. The arthritis in my knee ached ever step. But I finished!! I did it. I haven't been very successful with my band like so many have. Not proud of that. But a wonderful banderentioned couch to 5k app. and I tried it one day, then another then another. I completed the 27 day program and ran a race. Maybe someday I'll know what slim feels like....

I like to have casein Protein every night to the tune of 50-60 g. It is double chocolate and is like a creamy pudding. Who can resist, right? On occasion I forget or eat dinner too late and do not have time for that shake because I need a certain number of hours of sleep a night. I have noted that when I do not eat this one meal, that my weight tends to float up towards the top of my maintain window (175-180). As soon as I eat it again, say, the next day, my weight will drift back down to the bottom of my maintain window and my core section feels much tighter on waking up the following morning. It does not matter if I fail to drink it on a lifting day or a rest day. Sam…

I was recently rebanded and should be walking daily; however, because of a diabetic ulcer on the ball of my foot, I am supposed to stay off my feet as much as possible until it heals. Therefore, I cannot go into the pool across the street, either. Walking is tricky for me anyway because of balance problems and a few missing toes. I just ordered some resistance bands and a Leslie Sansone DVD from Amazon. I'll sit in a chair and move my feet, kick, or whatever Leslie says to do. It won't be like real walking, but at least I won't be completely sedentary. Any other suggestions?

Okay, so once you are in the green zone you are full for every 5-6 hours, and even then most folks it seems can only handle a Protein shake in the morning (if they eat anything at all), something light in the afternoon, and then a "real" meal in the evening. My question is, health wise, we are suppose to be keeping our metabolism going constantly, which means eating Breakfast (especially since it's the most important meal of the day), and eating every 2-3 hours after that to constantly feed your metabolism and keep your energy up as well as the fat burning molecules that it consists of. So if we are suppose to do this, how is being in the green zone considered "health…

I am mostly alone in this journey as my family try to be supportive, but usually end up sabatoging me. I don't even know where to begin, except to say that walking is my best option. I would prefer to do more pool workouts but I live in the country and am caring for 2 terminally parents, so that just isn't going to be possible right now. That said, how m…

Mine is deflated but still pretty significant and I need to know what compression garments work best for keeping it in place while running. I'm in training for my first 5k abs until now I've been working on the elliptical which is a lot smoother than hitting the pavement. I'm getting ready for the transition and as you all know that sugar HURTS when you start bouncing around like a little teenager at a punk show. Any help? Advice? Tips? I know I'm not the only one. Typically I have either : 1. a 40 g Protein shake with 10 g simple carbs in it ( not a desired 2:1 carb/protein ratio though by a very long shot) <or> 2. a simple meal that satisfies macros like 2 apples slices with almond nut butter and a 1-2 oz portion of chicken. These have been my go-to pre workout meal options preceding a cross fit workout for a long time ( last 6 months). I am going to try something different starting today. Cross fit takes a lot out of me and I want more endurance and more stamina. I am going to continue to get smarter about eating right foods before working out. My post-op down time will be my longest break EVER! So, how soon after surgery did you start back into your Zumba classes? I don't use weights in every class, but plan on using light wights (3 pounds TOTAL) whenever I resume.
