Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Fiddleman,

Today I got the worse legs cramps at the end of cross fit training during stretch out. My workout was not anything crazy hard today. However, I was more tired then usual in between sets and really huffing and puffing. Felt like I was going to pass out. Warmup: 1 mile run 20 push-ups 20 pull ups 20 sit-ups 20 lunges 20 air squats Stretching WOD 1 3 sets: 20 ght sits as fast as possible 30 second rest WOD 2 5 sets: 250 m row as fast as possible 75 lb clean jerk @ 10 rep Burpee and bar hop @ 10 rep 1 min rest Stretching I started to cramp up during the 5 sets above, but the cramping afterwards had me on the floor desperately trying to make i…

Hello My name is Tamika and I've been here lurking for about 2 months now! You all are such an inspiration to me! I have decided to get the lapband and have been doing my own research for about 1 year now. Its a very big step and I'm ready to make a change! I wanna know from you good people what was your experience like at the informational meeting?? How long did it take from that first meeting to actual surgery?? I'm going through Kaiser in Martinez Ca. Thanks so much! <3

Every day I pay attention to my nutrition and fitness in order to keep building muscle. My goal is to Not only get strong, but also to have a lean, well proportioned athletic physique. I had really good definition on Saturday this week and then by this morning my fat percentage is up .1%, weight is down 1.5 pound and definition has gone down. What is up with that? Is my body going all catabolic on me? One change I made on Friday was to switch my evening shake from GNC refeed ( hate the taste, but good results) back to ON casein ( love the taste and still get good results for leaning out). I am new to the muscle gaining / cutting exercise and am trying to learn along…

So this past Monday I took my daughter and my two granddaughters out to a horse rental outfit on the side of Mt. Rainier. We rode steep mountain trails for an hour and had an absolute blast! The last time I was on a horse was about 5 years ago, and it was a miserable ride; I could barely fit in the saddle, a trot made me want to die...etc., etc. This time I fit just fine, I am 30 pounds under the maximum weight limit, my core strength is strong enough to keep me balanced during the roughest up and downhill trotting...I was ecstatic for the entire ride! The only thing that hurt was both knees, which have ached for years with any stress on them at all. Hopefully that will i…

As I'm trying to set it up the armband snaps!!! Sad. I emailed the company and within 5 minutes I get a reply. They are overnighting TWO armbands AND giving me an extra month of free subscription which makes 4 free months! Wow! I just had to share!

  12. Cardio gets the fat off! If you’re in the early stages of this weight loss, I just want to share and point out, that the best thing you can do to see inches lost and pounds keep coming off is Cardio! And tons of it. Cardio can be boring. I’ll agree. But it’s soooo effective in getting the heart rate up and also building the endurance required to get through those intense weight training sessions when they are added into your exercise regimen. I have been doing some tests on myself just trying to figure out my body. I am a gym rat at this point nearly 7 months post op. I do a lot of strength training and cardio. I notice some weeks I just don’t have the energy reserve to…

Try these warmup plank exercises out at different times and see how well you can do: 1. 5 minute plank hold. 2. Hold 5 seconds at top, lower and hold 5 seconds with nose touching ground. Repeat 10 x. Do not jerk when starting upward flow to top position. Increase reps as you get stronger. 3. Start in top position, lower down over 5 seconds, change direction, raise for 5 seconds until back in top position. Repeat 10 x. Do not jerk up from the bottom, but allow the direction change to be smooth. Push through the struggle on last 1 or 2. I believe the start of the slow upward movement from bottom, when your arms are completely bent, is much like a bench press. For this…

But I wanted to share an NSV that I had this morning. 24 sessions ago the trainer I hired did a baseline test on me which left me exhausted and wondering WTF did I get myself into. The baseline test was the following: 200 meter walk 12-9-6 of Squats, Pushups and Rows 200 meter walk My time was 13:34 seconds. Today we repeated the baseline test to see improvement and if you are like me I love me some numbers and percentages! I did the above workout in 9:30 seconds for an improvement of AT LEAST 32%, BUT I modified the workout with the above to make it even tougher! …

  17. Question for all you fitness veterans: I was 208 on Monday morning (my usual weekly weigh-in day). I did 90 mins of cardio & strength training Monday evening and after exercising my net calories for the day were 135. Tuesday, cardio only, net cals 166. Wed, back to cardio & strength, net cals 91. I am 7 weeks post-op today, on solids but mainly sticking to my Protein drinks still. I was cleaning my bathroom this morning and on a whim stepped on the scale - it was 210.4! It is only happened about two or three times and I did eat something spicy today. Other than this, I don't ever have heartburn unless I eat something spicy or too much. I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow to see if I need An unfill, but I feel like I am in my green zone. TIA!

  20. So.....let me just start off by saying I HATE EXERCISE!!! I never stick with it long enough to "love" or "crave" it but I'm trying to become better. I recently have become unemployed and have been VERY stressed which has caused me to gain about 10 pounds. So, today I'm starting the 5-day pouch test in hopes for a reboot and just completed Week 1, Day 1 of the C25K program. Losing 50 pounds sure made a difference in that since the first time I tried it a few years ago. My chest didn't hurt when I did the jogging portions and I actually completed each interval. Later I plan to do my exercise ball exercises in attempt to strengthen my abs. So, for those of you that ar…

A couple days ago I had a raised red spot on my right shin. Today I am noticing it is no longer raised, but the area is much larger. Anyone have an idea on this? First time I have got it, but did start reading about possible dermitology issues here: http://www.dermnetnz.org/site-age-specific/lower-leg.html Could this be caused by lifting? Or something else more health related? I have not gone in to get it checked out by the dermatologist because wanted to wait a couple days to see if it goes away. It is not really like a bruise, but more blood vessel related. It has gotten bigger since yesterday and a little tingly. It is sensitive to the touch ( as in ouch),…

Has anyone tried doing a boot camp class right after surgery? My surgeon cleared me for all exercise starting this coming Monday, which will be six weeks post op for me. She said she wanted me to "punish my body" and do exercises that would leave me "dripping with sweat and gasping for air." So, I immediately thought of the time I took a boot camp class about three years ago, and she said that is perfect. I am wondering if anyone else has done something so strenuous so soon? This is my first time posting in this section... Here's a little background: I had surgery 5/23. 3 weeks later I was ok'd to start working out. I've been working out 5-6 times a week and I actually look forward to it. I've only been doing cardio because I hate using weights and then being sore for days on end. So, here's my problem. After surgery my belly deflated and dropped. Now it's dropped even more and I have a serious muffin top thing going on all around from the front to back. I'm 3 shirt sizes smaller up top. Is there any help or do I just need to wait it out continuing on with my cardio?

Its easier to buy clothes based on inches and I dont want to waste money guessing on what size I should be wearing as I lose weight I have one question though: When I measure the breast area - is it with a bra or without a bra?

Hi, so far I feel I am doing well with my lap band. I am in Onederland for the first time in 16 years, my plantar facitis is completely gone, I can walk miles and not die. However "the girls" are still the same. I am on the smaller size as far as my frame is considered but I have always been busty. Im 5'2" and started this journey with a bust size of 40DD, now I'm 36DD. I still get back pain, I still get the digging in on my shoulders from my bra straps. I have lost 40lbs. so my question is, do I still have hope that by losing more weight I will get to a smaller size or should I go ahead and make my appt for a reduction consult.? thanks for your help

I've been walking since I got back from the hospital. I'm now walking on the treadmill since walking outside bores the heck out of me. I'm now up to 3.1 mph and 3% ramp elevation for 30 min 2x a day- works out to about 3 miles a day. But today, as I was 10 min into my walk, I felt soooo tempted to break into a jog! I had so much energy and I wanted to do more than I was doing. I'm sure my surgeon would frown on it until I'm further out, but it feels awesome to feel like I want to- and could do running! I've never been a runner, but I can't wait until I'm cleared to do more stuff! Running, crew, Zumba, ballroom dancing here I come- and maybe even hiking!

That'll learn me for trying to out do my young troopers in a pull up competition.. Lol It'll be lower body exercises and lots of waking for the next while.. I'm cool with it as long as the weather stays steady. Will have to modify food intake as I won't be doing my 1000 calorie work outs for awhile.. Lol Take care all!

I have been really studying how to properly stretch for maximum flexibility lately. I have picked up a book by Bob Cooley about Resistance Stretching. http://www.amazon.com/The-Genius-Flexibility-Stretch-Strengthen/dp/0743270878/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1373549509&sr=8-5&keywords=resistance+flexibility It is a phenomenal read (have not put it into practice yet) and I believe it is cutting edge in the fitness world. A lot of Olympic athletes have been successful with these techniques so it is bound to help even us. Essentially, maximum flexibility comes from both contracting and elongating muscles at the same time. It is the contracting from resistance (pus…

You can find ones for arms, abs, butt, legs etc. they show you the movements and form and then count out the reps for you. Did an arm set with a resistance band this morning and really liked it. I recommend them to anyone looking for home workouts. I think I will also get a lot of use out of them when I'm in hotels for work travel.

She said she gets very frustrated when training her clients who've had wls bc there's a very specific zone they have to keep their heart rate in in order to lose weight. She told my trainer if he takes me out of that zone, he'll cause me to gain weight. I know what she's talking about.. It's a test you get done that tells you at what heart rate you burn fat most effectively. It's for EVERYBODY, not just wls patients. We all have a zone that works b…
