Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Hey everyone! Banded 3/27 and at 22 lbs weight loss. Amping up my workouts (as well as focusing in calories) to amp up my progress. Been doing quick 20 minute jogs before work but one of my coworkers recoed longer incline walks for weight loss. Thoughts? Makes sense as I actually find it harder to walk on an incline than jog flat! However jogging just seems like more if a workout. Thoughts?

I've been constantly working out and it seems to be working. My legs have gotten noticeably smaller but they were small to begin with. I'm what you would call an apple shape. Although I'm happy with the results so far , I wonder if there are any exercises that you know of that would help out with the stomach section.

So i am "running" my first 5k on June 8th! I have NEVER been a runner. I never even considered running/walking a 5k, just not my kind of thing. But, it was deeper than that. I was embarrassed. Embarrassed of my size. Will I finish last? What if I can't finish? It will be embarrassing if I have to walk it all? Can I even walk 3 miles? What if its really hot outside? What if I cramp up? I'll just do one later down the road when I have lost more weight... All of these questions, all of the doubt. But, I've lost 47 pounds so far since I set up my initial consult and my attitude has changed! Screw waiting!! I'm ready now!! I've been training for my 5k with the help of L…

I just set my surgery date for June 21st last week, so now I'm becoming really motivated to be as prepared as I can before then! I know we're pretty much limited to walking for a while after surgery so I starting walking today with my dog. I have that Endomondo app on my phone that tracks how far/fast I go and I went .78 miles today in about 15 minutes, so I'm okay with that! I really wanted to do a mile today, but it was really hot out, I probably shouldn't go at 1pm in Texas in the summer lol. So what are some other ways y'all got into the routine of working out when you're obviously not in good enough shape to go run a few miles or do crossfit or anything? I actually l…

I was a truck driver untill diabetes, and my sight (not related to my diabetes) got the upper hand. I will be seeing my Dr. In June and will be talking about this sleeve surgery. Hey Everyone! I was sleeved 3-11-13. I have since lost 70 pounds! :-) I've done it not only with the sleeve, but also with hard work in the gym. I guess I over did it and have injured my ankle pretty bad. I'm looking for suggestions for a new cardio workout. I know...SWIMMING(rolling my eyes). I like to listen to music while working out. I also have bad knees. I would love to hear from people who have gotten awesome results doing cardio other than the treadmill. Also, any Chicagoland people, HOLLA!!! ;+) Nicky

I super proud of myself tonight! I hate doing things alone. I had made plans to start the C25K with one of my friends this evening. Well 6 o'clock came and went and she didn't show up. At 6:30 I texted her asking if she forgot about me (I confirmed our plans only 2 hours earlier), I waited another 10 minutes with no reply (while struggling with myself over wether to go alone or not). I finally decided this is about ME and I need to do it for ME and I can't count on anyone else to make it happen. If I do Im just setting myself up to fail. So out the door I went and I ended up at the community center where they have an indoor track and found they also have child care! Scor…

I don't think I have ever been so tired and so sore in my ENTIRE life. I am a week out from meeting with my surgeon and hopefully receiving a surgery date within the next 30 days. So I decided to jump into a workout regimen....A BOOTCAMP! Part of me feels like I need this workout and part of me feels like it's too much. I believe I'm the biggest person in the class and I am truly struggling. Bouncing around with 300 on my back/knees is KILLER!! I hurt 1, If I ever mention that I'm considering not having the surgery.....PLEASE...just say the work BOOTCAMP!!!!

I'm keeping it fresh and being creative with my exercise. Biking, walk/jogging, walk DVD, DDP yoga, t tapp etc. I use a heart rate monitor and love watching how many calories I'm burning an then challenging myself, etc. How else do you keep yourself from getting bored? I'm not joining a gym until winter, I plan on taking full advantage of at least the weekends in summer. Also, we can't really hike in Missouri. At least not near me. It's a bummer really. I know that I can hire someone to train me, but the guy I talked to wants about 300 per mo. Ummm....that's not in my budget right now. Any tips, advice, help would be greatly appreciated! Hi folks - I bruised a vertabrae in the middle of my back a few days ago after doing some large reps of sit ups on a concrete like surface. Did not realize it was a problem until after the damage was done. I will not do that again. Good news is that it has no real impact on any physical activity except if I am on my back. I can still run, lift, etc during my workout. Bad news is it is very sore on one vertebrae, right in middle of back. Neither Tylenol or ibuprofen help much even though I tried some high doses. Heat from a therm a care pad helps the most, but I can't wear that most of the day ( in Hawaii doing beach and pool things). I also tried one of those medica…

Hello Band Buddies At a recent coffee group we were talking about walking. "They" recommend you walk 10,000 steps a day. Now I'm not sure who "They" are but there are many doctors that recommend that 10,000 steps per day is the target number of steps. I came across this GREAT website that has information for beginners that are interested in increasing their daily steps. Now I'm not saying everyone get out and walk 10,000 steps everyday but if you have a "Smartphone" with an App on it that can track your steps get it and try... or if you have an iPod did you know that there is a Pedometer on the iPod... I didn't?!?! You can also buy inexpensive Pedometers fr…

Does anyone have a good recommendation of additional complimentary exercise to do on the same day as cross fit workout? I want to do something in the morning at 9am and my Cross fit workout is at 4pm. Do you think it would be good to do some running or an ab workout? I am already doing push, pull and leg weights days, so do not want to do weight lifting on cross fit day. Nor do i want to do something that is going to fatigue arms and legs before cross fit in afternoon. Running does not fatigue if I keep it non HIIT. Thanks for your your thoughts.

  35. I have spent a fair amount of time reviewing these 4 options on you tube and Amazon. Right now, I am leaning towards the power-block adjustable dumbbells set because of durability, ease of use and handle grip. Cost is a factor too, but not the most important thing. Note that with Amazon prime I can get free 2 day shipping on some of these. Yeah!!! I am leaning *away* from Bow-flex because there are many reviews on Amazon that it can be dangerous if the plates slip ( see 1 star reviews). This will be my goal weight gift from my wife. I like that these take up a small real estate and are cost effective over time when considering one needs to own 25-30 or more individual …

Was wondering how far out people were before they resumed their exercises? Have you now changed your routine and find a different exercise to benefit you more? I'm now getting a bit bored with walking and can't wait to get back on my bike as I can go further distances and time seems to fly by.

I'm pre-sleeved, but I've been working my tail off to get back into shape. Once upon a time I taught aerobics, so today I gathered some of my co-workers and friends, dusted off my old workout music, steps and mats, gathered in a friends hanger and led a 50 minute floor and step aerobic class! Plus an extra 30 minutes of resistance band toning & abs! I'm on such a high right now. We agreed to get together 3 times a week... I hope I can keep up the momentum!

  50. Anyone have any suggestions? I am a big guy, but think it would be fun to add to my exercise routine...
