Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

Ok Friends I need your opinion. Do you weigh yourself everyday or do you do it once a week?? I have been weighing myself daily and it seems to just make me more aggregated than anything. I just can't seem to pass up those scales every morning. Do you think this is a good habit or not.

I've been exercising 5 or 6 times a week since the beginning of the year. And I'm getting tired of the same ol things, the bike, the treadmill, or my fav the elliptical, and of coarse in the last week or two back on the weights. But today I hit the pool and I cant wait, I swam in high school and am looking forward to changing it up and swimming. I'm going to try for 2500 yards in sets of 100 and 200 yards. That would be 100 laps of the 25 yard pool. I bought some goggles and am ready to go. Does anyone else swim?

Has anyone climbed stairs in tall building or has an aspiration to? I am thinking about trying a skyscraper in downtown Seattle. Is it legal to enter any building that has an open stairwell and do this? Does not need to be the tallest building, but would it not be fun to scale the Columbia building? Sounds really challenging and fun, especially if a group gets together to do it.

Today I needed to go to KMart, about 5 miles from the house. So my husband came with me so we could go to the gym after. We got to the car and he asked for me to bring him home. I asked what's wrong and he said, I am lazy and don't feel like going. I said, no excuse, and I drove us to the gym. I enjoyed it and he sort of did and he admitted he was happy he went. The other day it was nice weather in Boston and not too far away we have wonderful outlet shopping. My husband and I walked all over, 4500 steps. He has been very sick for almost 2 years and this is the most walking he has done since. It was wonderful, outside and walking. Exercise has become very import…

Hi guys, I have been seeing a fitness trainer for a few weeks now. Every time I see her I get some serious doms. Right now I'm having a hard time sitting or bearing weight in a downward motion because of the squats and lunges I did yesterday. Anyone have experience with this And how I can recover faster? Or how to relieve some of the pain?

I just emailed this question to my doc but I thought I'd see what you guys think. I am 4weeks post op and want to start lifting weights (less then 15lbs). I wonder if its too soon, what's everyone's time frame been for weights? Also I want to begin swimming for exercise, did anyone's dr advise them on when they can begin swimming post op? Thanks

3 months out, down 40lbs. One month out I started couch to 5k. Thought I was in ok shape cardio wise as of today. I did my first cross fit this evening and omg I thought I was going to puke out my lungs and my uterus! I did almost pass out after my first burpee round, saw stars and bright lights! So I put my head btw my legs, caught my breath and jumped back in. I'm going again tomorrow (my next door neighbors garage) but today really opened my eyes as to how unfit my body and heart really is. Well I knew my body is very unfit but damn this felt so good after, wobbly thighs & all!

OK gym / cross fit guys, my cross fit coach recommended taking catalyst 15 minutes before exercise or training to lean out more as well as increase reps, speed and weights. Have you used this? Does it work for you? I bought a bottle and will try it out today. Looks like it is basically amino acids you can only get from supplements. Reviews on Amazon seem to praise it. Let me know your thoughts.

I've been workin out with handweights since I was 13 years old. I've got my moms old routine down pat. (Much like body for life) I used I love it. Been to the gym in the last, that was fun too. I'm a big introvert. I'm also not much of a people person and I'm private. I went at 4 am before work back in the day and there was one guy and a grandma there that early. Now? I'm a stay at home mom. Cardio ( walk at home dvd's) make me feel like I'm gonna throw up wether I do it On an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. 12. In my mind I've been a runner for years. In my life I haven't bc at nearly 300 lbs it HURT to run. Tonight (down 77lbs since surgery) I began a new runners program with a local running club and I jogged (slowly) for 3/4 mile! I know that's not much, but for me it was huge! I am registered for a local half marathon in October and come hell or high water I intend to jog it. *It will be my 4th one. I walked three at roughly 270 - 280 lbs so I know I can do the distance. With this weight gone, I'm going to now begin running them.

If any of you are looking for a great podcast based running program, the Podrunner Interval Series really gets my butt moving. Start out with the First Day to 5K then increase to Gateway to 8K and Freeway to 10K. The music is great too! http://www.djsteveboy.com/intervals.html Or, if you are just looking for a steady BPM beat for working out on your elliptical, these are the best. I also use these on my walk each morning. It helps me keep a steady pace. http://www.djsteveboy.com/podrunner.html

I'd like to set a weightloss goal weight for June 1st, but how does one go about setting a realistic but not too easy/obvious goal? I was sleeved march second. Sw 224 CW 198 Gw 173? That's 25 lbs down in the next 8 weeks. Think that's too much for me? Watch me hit my 3 week stall right now and throw me all off. Lol

So I took my first 'hot yoga' class last night. Before being convinced to go, I was afraid of the heat. Being a previously larger person, heat and I were not friends so of course I was concerned about it. But turns out it wasnt the heat that was the hard part. It was the moves. Holy nuts! This sh*t was no joke. I got into the room very early and the heat wasnt bad at all. I had taken previous yoga classes but this one apparently was for more experienced folks because there were some moves that had my thinking in my head "you got to be out of your mind". The times that I couldnt do the move or felt a little light headed, I just sat in childs pose and drank some …

Is anyone else doing Insanity? I just started yesterday with my husband (who also has a sleeve). I'm also doing Couch 2 5k (on week 3) and will run my first one in June. I have switched to a real food diet recently (not counting calories, fat, etc), but now that I'm exercising so heavily I know I need to watch my Protein. How do you get enough protein w/o shakes (I cannot tolerate them!)? I'm about 8 1/2 months post op and still cannot eat much (which I'm TOTALLY ok with!). But Insanity has you eating 5 small meals a day, and I stay full for so long after eating one I'm not sure how I'll get enough.

I started going to the gym last week (was sleeved a month ago on 3/8/2013). I've been doing the elliptical machine, by the third day I got up to 25 minutes. My question is this - when I first get on the elliptical machine, the heartrate monitor on the handles of the machine say that my heartrate is 115 at the start of my workout. By the time I finish my 25 minutes, it is up around 180. This seems really high to me. I don't get lightheaded or dizzy or anything. When I go to the doctor and they put the thing on my finger that tells me what my oxygen level and heart rate are, it's usually around 70-80, so I don't think my heartrate is abnormally high. Why would it be …

I'm hoping to be 30 pounds less by then, but still worried about being too large for some of the obstacles. Also, did you train for it and what did you do to prepare? Thanks!

Since Nov the only exercise I've done is walking on the treadmill for an hour four times a week. My question for you is...our there any other exercises I can do to loose weight with out gaining muscle?? I don't know if this is true but my Dr. Wants me to stay away from anything making me gain muscle since for the 1st year they want me to loose as much fat as possible. Can anyone help me. I'm bored with treadmill and lost with coming up with options. Thanks

Some of you may know I have been training for a few months with running 5k and 10k. Each week I try and push myself and get better. Recently I joined cross fit to improve my fitness level. Last week, I saw this special on Evening Magazine (Seattle show) about cross fit and it showed this guy running at full speed on a treadmill at 12% incline. Afterwards, he was on his back breathing hard and looking like he just had the best sex ever (pardon the visual). I thought, damn, I wish I could do that. They said several times during the show that athletes do cross fit for the extreme high it brings. I thought - sounds good to me. Fast forward to today, I decided to really push…

I really only intended to stop by and find out information, perhaps watch a bit. however, the instructor convinced me to actually do the class instead of just watch it. Kind of a surprised actually because, to me, it was not that hot. Their website said their temperatures are between 80-85 F. It was an hour of some really hard yoga. I am glad the instructor explained everything along the way and I could watch him as I turned my self into a pretzel. They were hard for a while, but now getting good at them. They really stretch the inner thigh area and release the endorphins (natural morphine). I am in my chair all day for me job, so try to get up every hour and do air squats. It makes the ability to continue sitting so much easier. So if you are feeling dumpy, get up and do some squats or do something else that challenges and eliminates the chair fatigue.
