Today I started something new. I did water aerobics for a good hour. I didnt feel it while in the water. I feel it this evening. My arms are sore. I am going back Wednesday and do it again. It was a good workout. Honestly I can't swim. But taking this class is helping me adjust to the water and now I am thinking of taking swim lessons. It is a good full body workout. I felt so much better afterwards also. I am sore this evening, but I had more energy afterwards.

My surgery is scheduled for March 7th. I plan on running the 1/2 marathon at Disney World this November 2013. Is it realistic to think I will be ready to run it by then. I heard its the balance between getting the calories in and the energy it takes to run. Who has started a solid running schedule the first 9 months after surgery. Everyone else I know did not start working out the first year.

I have developed a love for obstacle racing ( Spartan Run type races ). I have completed 6 different races from 3-6 miles. Around mile 5 I start to feel my tank start to run dry very fast. I have an eight mile race in 2 months and a 13 mile race in 4 months. Are there any supplements or during race fuel that works well? Im getting close to 2 yrs post op and can eat or drink just about anything. Any tips would be appreciated.

What do you eat or drink after a workout? Tonight I ate 750 calories then did an intense 70minutes of Zumba. It ended at 8:45pm, that's too late to have a protein snack so I had 1/2 a cup of milk and water after. Is that ok? What do people eat or drink after a work out and sleeve? What about eating late??? Anyone else have that problem?

Before I started this journey I couldn't run ONE mile without stopping and feeling like my heart was about to explode. This morning I ran 3.25 miles without stopping and even felt like I could go further. I averaged a 10:55 min mile which excites me even though its still pretty slow. The frustrating part is I get three different numbers for calories burned. The heart rate monitor says 400, the my fitness pal app says 480 and mapmyrun says 720???? I decided to go conservative in my journaling so I don't accidentally over eat....but WTH?!! The difference is nuts.

I've just started c25k (week three now) and have a speed question. For the first run of week three, I pushed myself to 5mph and got a little side stitch so I backed off the speed a little and did better. Last night, second night of week three, I did all the running at 4.5 mph at 1.5% incline (treadmill is my only option). I did much better at the slower speed- no stitch in my side. My question is; should I push harder on the speed, or build up the running time and work on upping speed later? Am I going to forever run slow if I don't push myself more now? I've never run before so I'm clueless about this! Thanks!

With all the concern over loose skin, just wondering if beginning weight training as soon as possible will help. Anyone have experience/feedback with that? How far out from your VSG did you start weight training? What's the general time frame post-op that people get the green light to exercise in general? Thank you for the info!

Hi all, I broke my foot 2 weeks ago. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of where I could go on the internet for exercises for 5lb. weights, or does anyone have any suggestions of what exercises I could do with a broken foot.. I asked about swimming and they said no..so I guess it's just upper body I can do right now.. Thanks for your help!

I hope I can explain this in a way that makes sense, because I know I am confused. So...I wear my fitbit to track my daily calories burned. Certain days (like today) when I do no exercise, only just my normal daily routine, the fitbit reads that I have burned 2202 Calories. I assume this is the BMR. First off, is this the BMR? So today I ate 1376 calories and according to fitbit burned 2207. Does this mean I have a calorie deficit of 831? Or since I technically did not exercise, is there no calorie deficit? Should I only count those calories burned by actual exercise? I really just want to be sure that I am burning more calories than I am eating on days when I could not f…

Hi fitness freaks, My new wrinkle for my aerobics days is running intervals up a killer hill next to my house. After a warm up I hit the bottom of the hill and run full speed up as far as I can get in 30 seconds while pumping 5 pound hand weights. I then walk back down swinging the weights around. Today I did 6 cycles.. number 6 was a real puff fest. Afterward, cool down time and then some push ups. I don't run down the hill because I think it would destroy my knees, I am liking interval training. I think it gives good results without wearing out my 64 year old body as much as longer training times. I have a big jar of powdered micronized glutamine that I got from…

This may seem like a simple question, but I have not really been able to find a good answer yet. Recently my gluts have been getting more sore after during run or after during hill climbing on my treadmill. For example, yesterday I ran 35 minutes and the did hill climbing on my treadmill at 4.0 MPH and 10% incline for 35 minutes. Today, my gluts are really sore. Is that normal or am I lacking proper muscle support in core? I also notice I clench a little in the gluts when running even though I internally think about relaxing them if I feel tight there. I have been trying to do additional stretching of my hip flexors before and after running, but this does not seem to r…

So, I just got the okay from my dr to start swimming and today was my first time at the gym to do this. I've never swam laps before & wondering how I should put this into MFP, there are two options one says light, moderate effort and the other says fast, vigorous effort.... While I certainly wasn't going "fast" it sure as heck wasn't a moderate effort on my part, I only didnit for about 20 minutes & my arms were burning so... I guess my question is, is the moderate/vigorous calorie count based on a "general" ability or my own abilities? Cause if I compare to the other swimmers that were there, I was going super slow, but for myself, I was working hard! Below is…

I have never been athletic in the slightest except for a brief period of time when I was really into soccer as a preteen. Ive never been able to run even a quarter of a mile but I would like to start. Is there such a thing as being to heavy to run in your opinion? I know its not the easiest on your joints but I am 24 years old. I just have no idea how to even approach this. I enjoy nightly walks and would love to just take off but 100 feet from where I started I start to feel as though I am unable to breathe and I have to walk again. Rinse and repeat. I never get anywhere with it.

Went to a support group meeting for all types of WLS last night at a local hospital. It is not the hospital where I had surgery. The patients in this support group were told not to do sit ups and crunches (even after 6 weeks post op)? I need feedback. I assumed that it would be okay to resume those activities when I was ready.

Just wanted to share a GREAT App I found in the App store on my iPhone called VirtuaGym. Its easier to sign up online first and then download the App and then sign into the App...anything done online or on the App gets synced each time you log in, and its FREE. If you like it you can sign up for the PRO benefits and they dont cost that much, as little as $1.92 a week. You can design a personal workout plan, and if you are a member of a gym or healthclub, it can be added to your profile. It has nutrition and everything, I'm liking it so far.....you guys should check it out.

zomg, last night I worked out for the first time since...oh high school, probably (6 years or so), and it totally kicked my butt!! I did the Power 90 workout with my husband (who was really just there for emotional support, since he's already fit and buff being in the Army). I was only able to do about 80% of the workout, and did some exercises while sitting in a chair, and others I just laughed at while drinking Water because there was no way I'd be able to do them (like the reverse push-up thing that I was suppose to do supporting myself on a chair, with my arms behind my back). I think I did 8 of the most pathetic looking push-ups in the world, and I realized that I'…

I have a habit of getting really excited about things I'm positive ill use, purchasing them, using them for 2 months and never touching them. Anything in life. Actually I had a treadmill about 5 years ago, and that scenario Happened. I think what happened was I just didnt know what to do, but I really want to do c25k and I'm not brave enough at this weight to do it outside. Now that I know about c25k, I want one again. What do you think?(I'm preop, surgery should be in 6-7 mos)

I need help with ideas. I work full time, 3 jobs, and attend college and university classes (15 credits this semester, plus clinicals 2 days a week). I also have an active 6yr old. Since my husband works crazy hours, I try to schedule my life around the family. In October I joined a gym and hired a trainer to help me get going. but then my schedule exploded. Between all of my work and school I just dont have time for the gym plus I cant take my son with me. Any suggestions for quick exercises I can do at home that does not require equipment or machines? Please consider it must start out not too intense...

Anyone out there that was motivated to have the surgery because of severe knee pain? Before surgery I was in constant pain at work and the first thing I did when I got home was ice my knees. I am down 42# with the preop diet and postop loss at 3 months. I really thought my knees at the end the day would start to feel better. The only exercise I have been able to consistantly do is pool walking, pool aerobics and pool zumba. Even with that my knees flair. So I keep to an every other day schedule. Im am interested in others experiances. Both with the weight loss and what exercises have been most comfortable. Was there a point where the pain got less? Ortho wont touch …

I was told no lifting over 20 pounds and no exercise other than just light walking around the house and what not for 2 weeks. I have a tread mill in my house and I'm wanting to get back on it but I'm not going to injure myself and disobey my doctors orders by rushing things. I'm just curious how soon all of you began to resume your normal exercise routines after your surgery and how long you worked out at first when you started back up.

I got this in the mail yesterday after pilfering sample from gnc for a while. Watermellon is my favorite flavor and only has 5 cals a serving. This stuff really works. I took a serving 30 min before my hour run and felt the pump. After 30 minutes of running, I still felt awesome and like I had only done a 5 min jog. Started to get fatigued at 50 minutes, but still had energy in the tank. Now the question is do you think I could use this in a 5 k compete? On the back, there is this big disclaimer about how this should not be used by certain sports because it may cause false positive on PS ( whatever that means). I am not sure if the races ban this kind of stuff. Thoughts?

OK guys and gals...I got the go ahead yesterday for strength training. Prior, I loved to lift and powerlifted years ago. I'm not dreaming about deadlifting a few hundred pounds right now, but would like some input from sleevers who weight lifted prior to surgery and where they started at when they were able to resume post op. High reps with light weights.....heavier weights low reps....little bit of both? I'm more concerned about maintaining (or dare I dream gaining) muscle mass than losing the fat right now....the latter will come in time as a pleasant side effect of the sleeve and weight training (yes, some cardio/yoga too ). Maintaining a positive nitrogen balance …

I'm a little excited! I just bought a Stamina UX2 Air Resistance Upright Exercise Bike from Walmart and got it all put together! I'm looking forward to using it tomorrow. I've always loved to exercise but after some trouble in college, I got out of the habit and started gaining weight and then exercise was a little uncomfortable. But since I've lost almost 50 lbs, it's a lot easier to move and I have so much more energy.... One of my major goals is getting a really nice bicycle and perhaps getting into cycling someday. I loved my bike when I was a kid, there's nothing like the feeling of the air streaming by as you peddle faster and faster. I'm on my way!!!!

Just finished my 2nd spin class and I had forgotten how much fun exercise is. I was out of breath, dripping sweat (I love to sweat) with legs of jello, but I burned 400 calories in 40 minutes and I had an endorphin high that makes the finest pot look like so much crab grass. I feel really good. I can hardly wait until I can get the road bike and the hiking boots out. I may just have to take the family out snow shoeing this week end.

The cold can make us want to stay in bed. WE ALL KNOW, we need to keep moving. What better way than a movement challenge. I am starting a January challenge to walk/run 100 miles in January (60k) Log in your miles each Saturday of January. For those of you wondering, that means TOMORROW it starts.. Who can hear the Rocky theme song in their ears right now? If not, what song will be your January motivation? Jump in all!
