Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Lapbandster,

I go to the gym 4-5 times a week on average (unless i'm sick or something) I spend at least an hour there, and I used to spend a lot of time on the elliptical (30 mins) and the rest strength training (weight lifting, situps, calf presses etc.) but now I'm doing the couch to 5k program (Just finished my first week, yayyy!!) and i'm exhausted! Running really exhausts me, and interestingly i'm only burning 1/3 of the calories on the treadmill than I normally burn on the elliptical . I'ts so frustrating.... So what's YOUR routine?

And joining a gym today. I have been happily walking (outside and on the treadmill) but thought I would kick it up a little. It has been years since I joined a gym and I am excited. Baby steps for me (gonna use the elliptical and other low impact machines until I am cleared for other activity). Another phase of the journey.....I am happy to be on the ride! Don't panic and keep moving! My motto for the day!

Very avid runner. Had to take time off due to my revision from band to sleeve which was successful on February 11th 2013. I am dying to get back on the road. Is it too early? I feel great. Just don't want to mess anything up. Sent from my iPad using VST

One of the goals that I set for myself was to complete a century ride for charity this year. I have registered for one and have started training for it. I am currently 7 months post op and only able to get 1200 to 1300 calories in with out using gel paks and the like. I have an appointment with my nutritionist in 2 weeks but I was wondering what others were doing intake wise during long rides?

Hi all. I'm 2 and a half months out. I just started really working out. I started trying to do C25K. I'm still pretty big and also out of shape so it's taken me a while to working up to complete even day one. I've done it 3 times this week as well as a 'boot camp' style workout with my best friend one night. I've also been walking in between and doing some floor exercises at home every morning (crunches, jumping jacks etc) Anyway I noticed my weight hasn't moved this week since starting all this. Intact it's gone up. I was 305 last week and now I'm 307. Is this normal? I've been going pretty hard at this, I'm pretty sore and swollen so maybe it's Water weight? Any input…

Hello everyone, So I been going to the gym everyday this week since i am now allowed to lift. I been taking my Protein drink about a hour before going to the gym. then I com home take my Vitamins then eat about 1-2 hours after that (3-4 hours after the protein drink). Should I take the Protein Drink after my work out? will it help more? Like to hear from the people that lift. Also do you take anything else to help?

  13. This is a loaded question..... I've had some pretty bad ankle pain over the past few months and its stopped me from exercising regularly. I had an MRI last week and I found out that I have tenosynovitis. Im pretty sure that ill have to get a boot on my foot. yay...... :/. Does anyone have any suggestions of good cardio workouts that can be done without putting much weight on my foot? I have defiantly notices that since I hurt my foot, that my weight loss has slowed.

I've thought about plus size slow yoga or dance but I don't know- to be honest I'm lazy if u will-- I don't like to sweat and get tired-- any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated. I recently joined a gym and realized how much I missed working out. When my NUT said I needed to work out 5x's week I thought she was crazy! I'm a single mom and my daughter does tap, ballet and t-ball. There was no time for the gym. I decided I had to find a way so I started taking my daughter with me and the gym owner got her a few coloring books and they talk to her to keep her from getting bored. The owner is aware of my WLS and his staff is very supportive. I have been able to go 5x's a week! This is a huge accomplishment for me and I'm proud of myself.

I've lost approx 75 lbs and although I look great web clothes on, my skin is very loose and looks weird when I'm sitting in shorts, etc. Any suggestions on "at home" exercising that can be done to tone? I was thinking Pilates DVDs but wondering if anything has worked for you. I have a 2 yr old and my husband and I work different shifts so that leaves me 8-10pm at night at home while my son sleeps as exercise time. I'm aware that I will prob need to get some skin removed but I'd prefer to help it now with exercise.

I'm 8 weeks out lost 76lbs. Started going to the gym at week 5. Started mostly cardio then started doing lite weights. I can't stop thinking about the gym. All I wanna do is be in the gym. Losing this weight motivates me to better myself mentally and physically. I just hope I don't get burned out like previous attempts at the gym. Any other sleevers feel this way?

So, I've been on this plateau for about 8 weeks now. (I'm only 4 mo.out from surgery) I've only lost about 25lbs since surgery. I had been going 3-4 times a week to the gym doing 30 min cardio and Nautilis machines. I got sick with a cold and did not go for a week and then started losing weight! did not go for another week. had lost about 3 lbs over the last 2 weeks. Monday I started back at the gym, have gone every day and have gained the 3 plus 1 lbs back? This is not logical I did go out to dinner Monday night but did not eat anything outrageous and brought home most of it. So why in the world would I be up 4 lbs? I was so happy thinking I'd broken the plateau, only to…

Before piling on the weight I loved to walk and could walk for miles. Now I'm getting back into walking (using my FITBIT) and I must say I'm enjoying it again. Loving that I'm not huffing and puffing climbing the stairs. I'm averaging 6400 steps (2 1/2 miles) during the week and 800 steps (3 1/2 miles) on the weekends. I hope to increase my steps and miles by the end of the month. Who's walking and how many miles and steps do you take daily?

Hey, I was online looking for workout plans and came across this one from Women's Health Magazine online. The description is: "Shed fat fast and get into the greatest shape of your life with this calorie-crushing, plateau-busting routine". I tried it today at the gym and I have to say, my body really responded. I was sweating and feeling the workout afterwards! It is based upon a set of strength training exercises with blasts of cardio between each set. You can choose whatever machine you want for the cardio portion (I chose the elliptical), but you have to have it at a mid to high intensity while for the amount of time you're on it. Here is link to the hot body worko…

LOL I kept at it, kept at it... (Even tho I had a hard time walking back out to where I parked the car!!!) and today I did 20 MINUTES on it!! I was so happy when I left the gym! Just a personal goal of mine I wanted to share. ( Pre-op )

I have been walking for months and months but now that I am 2 months post op I am really trying to switch things up a little. I have taken 2 different classes that have some type of abdominal exercises. Well, in one of them, you need to lay on top of the stability ball. The other is a sort of plank. My problem is is that I am putting too much pressure and weight on my port and it is extremely uncomfortable. So I tried to modify it but doing traditional crunches and even that puts pressure on my port. It seems like it is pretty close to the surface. I have already lost 30 post surgery and I plan on losing another 50. Does this get better or has my one modified exercises ev…

It helps for about 10mins then its right back to stiff and painful. I am just going to wait it out and ice it from time to time. Anyone want to give some suggestions so this doesn't happen again.
