I found a new body composition testing option called InBody: http://www.biospaceamerica.com I'm going to get the testing done in a couple of weeks. It is faster, and in some cases cheaper, than DEXA or BodPod. If you happen to live in Colorado, here's where I'm getting it done: http://www.rosemed.com/conditions_we_treat/sports-medicine/chss/inbody-720.htm If you live in another state, all I did was Google "inbody denver" and I found the local hospital that does it. It is $75 for a session that includes the InBody testing and a consultation about how to modify workout plans to achieve goal weight with optimal body composition. For example, either build more muscle (l…

We had 6 inches of snow yesterday in Everett area and it was a blizzard out. I had to do my training inside. Not today though. Sun is out, blue skies, and a beautiful day for a hike. Here is a picture from atop mount si. Mount Si is a hike for every one. 4000 feet of climb over 4 miles. Not terribly difficult, but you will get winded if not ready for it. There are runners, families, old people, young people, etc. Usually 100-200 people on the trail at a time so it gets a little crowded. I have not been up here in 20 years ( high school). Up in 45 min, a new personal record. The birds are hovering in front of me as I munch my Protein bar. The little beggars... Firs…

Hello Everone! I turned 18 on March 17, 2013 and I had my surgery on March 26th. I've been doing my best to get up during the day and just pace around my house or go up and down the stairs. When did most people start getting into light exercise like taking a walk outside? I just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of this operation. Just looking to hear peoples stories of what kind of exercises they started out doing, how intense, and for how long Thank you for your support and help!

Hi gang! Sleeved on the 19th. Would anyone have a good timeline of exercise that we can do on a week to week basis? For example Week one and two, just walking. I want to get back into all sorts of activities like kickboxing, yoga, horseback riding, weights, Zumba, stairmaster, spinning, cycling. Just not sure how and when to start incorporating these back into my routine. My two biggest fears, leaks and tearing sutures open. I also know that I don't want to wait 2-3 months before I can exercise again. That just seems like a really long time to wait. Any reasoable thoughts on what they did, or what advice their doctors gave them regarding exercise? I say reasonable becau…

I gave myself a wonderful birthday present this year. Health! I joined a gym. I have my own trainer Bill. He is very motivating and manages to make me feel excited about the scary machines that loom in my future. My husband and I joined on 2/16/13. To date I have lost 8.5 inches!! And most of it...in my stomach. I am really focusing on arms and stomach because the stair stepper, treadmill and eliptical work out my legs and butt. I am down 8 shirt sizes and 6 pant sizes!! Having the sleeve surgery saved my life. I feel like a new person. I have traded my love for food for a love of a healthier ME!! The best part is that I dont worry about the machines to come …

How does this work? I'm 3.5 weeks out and I really dislike the shape my body is taking on as it loses quickly without exercise! I really want to start a cardio workout (walk at home) but I know from experience that's hat one makes me stop and slam down Water to make it through the second half. I can't do that obviously, so I'm wondering where that leaves me. Am I stuck doing resistance only until I can get my 48oz? I'm getting about 36 oz fluids. I don't like water anymore (I was a chugger), just started tolerating Protein drinks, choke down Gatorade. This is my biggest struggle as far as the sleeve is concerned. Please help, so that I can get my cardio too!?

Hi all: I am almost 4 weeks post-op and am struggling with a lack of energy, getting easily winded and very low stamina. I used to work out before my surgery and could do 35 minutes on the elliptical and some weight machines. I've taken a few walks but I feel so breathless, especially when I first start. It seems to get a little easier after about 10 minutes but I'm not breaking any land-speed records. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I'm a bit concerned. Thanks!

I want to start exercising NOW & my favorite pre op exercise was kettle bells !!! Anyone else doing kettlebells...when did you start. I have emailed my doctors nurse to ask but I want to hear from someone who has actually had the surgery & do kettlebells. Also I have lost 23lbs since surgery & have noticed a plateau for 4 days. scale not moving and I feel I'm doing everything by the book. I understand my body is adjusting & most everyone will have plateaus has anyone else seen a plateau this early (2wks post op)

I'm a big MFP user and find it to be really useful. Question is: do most "eat" their exercise calories (using the net calorie calculation) or do you ignore them? I mostly try to ignore them, but there are times when it would be useful - like now when I'm on a vacation!

I am a pretty inflexible guy. Always have been. However, my flexibility seems much better since VSG. Maybe from all the stretches before and after running. Which instructor DVD would you choose and why? Looking forward to all the benefits from relaxation yoga.

I have around a 1000 calorie or more deficit each day. I should be losing 2 lbs steadily each week. While I lost more in the beginning, my weight has slowed down to around 1lb a week. This week I stayed the same. When I used my bodybugg before WLS, I would lose very close to what my calorie deficit. I am wondering what gives this time around. I thought I would see what others are experiencing. Mary

I would like to start keeping an more accurate and personalized account of how many calories I am burning each day. I believe it will make me more aware and accountable for my exercise...the way that tracking calorie intake on my fitness pal keeps me on top of my food intake. There are several out there now and I would like to know which ones you guys like and why you like it. I really need your advice and input. Im excited to find one and get started with it

Hi! I recently purchased a fit bit ultra and we aren't really getting along well. I do bootcamps and used to have a polar monitor with the chest strap. It would register 700 calories burned for one hour. The fit bit registers 400. I have tried pinning it to my chest, hip, shoulder and it registers all over the place. Where do you pin yours to get the best reading? It doesn't sync to MyFitnessPal like I thought it would. Unless I am missing something, do I really have to plug it into the dock attached to my computer, it isn't wireless? The manual isn't helpful so any other advice you have would be awesome. Thanks!

I have a question. I was discussing Yoga with a friend who is not getting WLS, but is in the process of losing weight. I have several times tried to get her into the studio with me, and there is always a reason why she cannot. She does/will exercize alone. Recently she asked me "are you sure I will show up and they will let me in?". I responded that they rarely get so full they turn people away, etc. She corrected me by saying, basically, she meant would they tell her she was too big, or that she did not meet the image they wanted, etc. This broke my heart. I just hurt inside for her as I realized what she meant. It has been bothering me sooo much. I brought it up to…

I am four weeks pre op, going on the 28th of March to get my sleeve! I want to know if anyone has experience maintaining, or losing muscle. I ask because I have a lot of muscle, freakishly strong honestly. I'm currently 5'10", 295 and wear a size 20 pant. I joke about my fat being a protective layer for my muscle! But seriously, how can I make sure to keep that muscle? I don't want it to deteriorate and be weak and bony. Do I need exercise? Is it all on the Protein? In the Vitamins? What gives? Any help would be awesome! Thanks. Becky

I was at the gym today and always do the same machines. I do a leg press machine and today it hurt my port. I told my husband when I got home (he is sick, so wasn't with me), He thinks it was because the seat was too close and it made my stomach stick out more than usual. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Have a great evening everyone.

This weekend I attended a running workshop called Chi-running. It's not as crazy as it sounds. The instructor is just a guy who is an ultra marathon runner who also happens to be into tai chi. He applied the form and physics of tai chi to running to develop a technique that allows you to run very efficiently and reduces injuries by reducing wear and tear on the body. It was a great workshop. We spent a good deal of time learning proper posture. Learning how to use gravity to help propel us forward. And how to run without the high impact which causes so many injuries. There were all manner of runners there from accomplished marathoners to total beginners who cou…

I've been using MyFitnessPal for quite a while, and I was frustrated that the prediction of what I'd weigh in 5 weeks seemed to be way off. Today, I was adjusting my settings again, and I noticed that MFP had set my calories burned from "normal daily activity" at over 2400. My actual BMR is about 1500. You see this number when you log into MFP, go to the home page and then click on "goals." I can't manually adjust the number MFP gives me for my "daily calories burned," but I was able to get it down by choosing "sedentary" instead of "active." This still gives me a higher calories burned from "normal daily activity" at 1800, but it is closer to my actual BMR. I noti…

Hello- I had lapband surgery on 2/14/12. I have lost 70 pounds so far. I started out going to the gym 5 days a week and working out pretty hard and steady there. I loved it, my problem is I have 3 kids and 2 grandkids and pretty active with them and also work full time. The only time I would have to go to a gym is 4am or 9 pm and then I live about 30 minutes from the closest one. I just can't stay committed to work out at those times as I know it will be very difficult. So, I'm looking for suggestions to workout at home. I have a treadmill and looking to buy a Bowflex. Are there any suggestions for exercises to do at home besides videos? I'm looking more for stre…

Ok- I already like and enjoy c4 and am looking for a good pre workout to cycle onto. My last cycle was no-eplode 2.0, but I didn't like it very much. Always gave me stomach issues. Is the Jack3d any good? Others? Looking for one that tastes good and gives me the push for my lifting and cross fit. Any known issues with taking these?
