Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by JenWis6,

I am 3 months postop and have a lot of excess fat hanging from my upper arms. I have been adding weights (triceps, biceps, press, etc) to my workout routine for the past 2 weeks and am wondering when I might start see some results. I am looking forward to meeting one of my goals of wearing a sundress this summer but will kind of be embarressed with the arm flab. Thanks

Hello, my name is Tamara. i was banded 2-21-12... so as of yesterday is has been 1 year. I have lost a total of 103 lbs so far! I am extremely happy with my weight loss so far, but for about 2 1/2 months I have been stuck at this weight. I recently joined a gym, I am hoping that will help. Anyone have similar stories after being around a year out? If so did the weight loss kick back in, or what did you do?

My day job is sitting for 10-12 hours a day unfortunately. Even though I get in 1 hour of rigorous exercise once a day (running or cross train) I found it still a little draining to sit all day. One tip that has helped me is to add in two little mini fitness routines during the day, one when I get up at 5:30am and one an hour after eating lunch around 12 pm. It is pretty short, between 5-10 minutes long. It is usually a slow 5 minute jog on the treadmill (4.5 mph) and then some in place stretches and light weight routine (10 lb) consisting of flys, curls, squats, laterals and so on. The whole thing is fairly low key, but is enough that I will get a light sweat going and …

Hi all, I am 3.5 years post op, have lost 4 stone and a bit with 4ml restriction. I have exercised constantly and got advice on what I should do with my arms to constant fail. My bingo wings are bringing me down, I cannot seem to shift them. Has anyone got any tips, advice on what exercises have worked for you or is surgery our only option? Thanks for reading.

  10. Started by AClamors,

I had surgery on November 27, 2012. My beginning weight was 193, I am now 172. My scale has not budged from 172 in the past past 7-10 days. I exercise every day, consisting of 20-25 mins on the eliptical, and a few days a week I will throw in an extra 10-15 mins. I know my scale is accurate because it is weighing my kids correctly. I don't understand why I haven't lost anything this past week. I do not count my calories, should I start counting?

So surgery was on the 21st. I've been making sure I walk around the house each day. This morning, I would take a sip of my protein drink then walk around the house to come back for another sip and my pedometer didn't registered all the steps. I use it as my motivation to work back up to 10k steps per day, but the stupid thing isn't counting my steps since I am moving too slow. I can't wait til the one stitch that bothers me, heals up completely. Otherwise I am feeling ok.

I NEVER thought I would be the person who loves going to the gym but now it's my favorite thing to do. I love taking the classes step, cardio kickboxing, aqua boot camp, sculpt, powerflex, Zumba and just recently took TRX. It has become part of my daily routine. I did not get the surgery to be skinny I did it to be healthy and the ONLY way to reach my goals. My entire life has changed since the surgery. I am so blessed!!

I'm walking on the treadmill at least once a day, sometimes 3 times a day. But I haven't started lifting weights yet. After 20 years of gaining weight I just don't want to do anything to slow down the weight loss. Am I nuts? I've lost about 80lbs so far & got 50 to go.

I know everyone has their opinions on this but I would like to hear them. The program I am on has me doing 30mins of cardio after my workouts every other day. It states to keep my heart rate at 75-85% of my max heart rate. What does everyone else keep their heart rate at while doing cardio. My heart rate shoots up to about 170 and I really have to slow in down to get it into the 150s... opinions please.

So this is my 7th week post-op. I started going to the gym and am doing the c25k and lifting weights. On monday i did 70 crunches on one of the machines with 35lb weights - i was still pretty sore from Monday, but on Wednesday i did 100 with 35lbs. Hopefully this will help with loose skin issues. Thoughts?

  20. hey I found this program called Ashy Bines bikini body challenge. I would love to try it but Im wondering if anyone has tried this and achieved results?

  21. Started by Fiddleman,

I got my precor treadmill off of Craigslist a while back and it is a refurbished model from a gym. The model is C954 and has been around awhile. Love it though as it is a very solid product and does the basics very well. The Max time is 60 minutes, but the message seems to indicate that it was configured to this for the previous gym where it was used. I want to be able to run more then 60 minutes on it without stopping and starting a new program. Does anyone know how to change this setting? I do not think it is an easy user setting because the idea is that the gym wants to enforce a Max time on the gym members. Might be a way to get into a different "hidden" setup m…

I go to the gym three or four days a week at 2:30 in the afternoon to workout with a trainer. I'm always afraid to eat too much for lunch, but find that sometimes I feel really hungry and empty while I'm at the gym. What's are good things to eat for lunch on workout days, and do I need to do anything but drink water after a workout to recover? I'm really new at this fitness thing!

Today I am 7weeks post op, & my 3rd week working out at the gym (cardio only)....I'm steady building myself up....but only averaging between 350-450 calories burned, just wondering if this is enough or what range should I be in. I usually spend about 45mins to an hour....I've been walking/running the treadmill, a few days I did the elliptical, today was the stair master ;(

Super excited! I am going to be meeting with a personal trainer later this week to have a fitness assessment done and to map out a plan. I will probably let him know that I had WLS just to he on the safe side and so he will have a better understanding of my needs. Working out always makes me feel good and healthier! I don't have a NUT, so I am not too sure if I should raise my caloric intake and incorporate more complex carbs.

I have my first compete coming up in less than 1 month and have started running dec 2012 and seriously training jan 2013. Schedule: 3 or 4 runs a week. Cross train and light weights on off days. 5k run : 28 min average, average 6.2 mph 10 k run: 62 min average, average 6.0 mph HIIT: 45 min- 5.5-6.0 spiking every 5 min HIIT 30 min: 6.0-7.0 spiking every 5 min During 5k and 10k, I put on the afterburners with last 5 min. I usually can sustain my averages above with energy in the tank for the end sprints. What advice do you have about preparing for the upcoming 5 k and how to pace myself during the run. 29. Started by nekaneek,

So, I'm 4 weeks post op, started walking this week and doing some arm exercises/lifting to tone arms. But, my stomach is still tender from the surgery and I can't do anything that requires a lot of tightening of the abs. I've always been heavier on the bottom than top, so I don't want all of my boobs, and some of my hips to go before the belly, lol! What did you do?

So I did it! I just signed up for a spring co-ed slo-pitch softball league, starting in mid-April! I haven't played softball since I was 17 years old (I'm 43 now!), but I love the game and I've missed it alot! I decided last year when I had my VSG in the spring, that this spring, I would be playing again. And now I am all set to go! I finally hit onderland a few days ago, so I am confident I will be able to play fairly well and not get too winded or injured due to my size (the main reason I haven't played for so long). So exciting! I can't wait for April 15! WOOHOOO!

  32. Started by Fiddleman,

I had the best hour run today of about 6.0 miles. Between 10 and 45 minute marks, it was just consciousness and music. I was jacked in. Kind of like that scene at the end of the "matrix" when he realizes he is the one and he easily does Kung fu or causes bullets to drop just by thinking about it. I made an agreement with my body to just do it and go on autopilot, enjoying the lyrics of my music. It takes about 10 minutes to reach that warm runner buzz. It wore off around 45 minutes when my legs started getting tired. This IS my new addiction.

So, Tuesday will be two weeks post-op from my gallbladder removal! I've been unable to work out well for months because of the pain pre-op, but I aching to get back to the gym on Tuesday. I figure I'll start with light weights for my arms and about 15-20 minutes of cardio. I don't have my official post op until one month out, but this was approved by my doctor. I never thought I'd be SO excited to go sweat!!!

I am looking for a low carb snack? I do Jerky but iy is high sodium. Couldn't tolerate nuts pre surgery so not going there now. Fruits are full of crabs. I don't want to just eat the Protein snack bar but I keep winding up back there because I can only eat so much sugar free Jello. I am limiting my carbs to 50 a day. Any ideas?

So I'm not a real runner by any means but I like to alternate running and walking in 6 minute intervals currently (so I can get 2 miles done in half an hour usually) How soon after surgery were people who do run able to resume it or start. My surgeon is saying 6 weeks but at the same time he seemed a bit surprised by the question so I assume I was the first patient to ask (or possibly just the first patient my size to ask).

  48. Hey gang...are there any other safe workouts besides walking I can do within the first month of surgery? My doc said no strenuous workout until after 4 weeks, but walking is not a productive workout for me...I need more cardio!

  49. Started by Success2013,

My energy is getting worse at 1 month after surgery. I'm taking my b12 and multi vitamin, I drink an average of 40 ounces of water and average 60-70 grams of protein. But by lunch time it's torture to stay awake. I have so much I need to do! Any ideas? I thought about energy drinks or even possibly asking my endocrinology doctor if its ok for me to take the diet pills he prescribed last year.
