Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Shells,

Just a gentle reminder to my fellow sleevers to always stay hydrated! Spring is here summer is around the corner so water is essential. I had my sleeve in January 24 2012 so I'm over a year out. Even now im still trying get my 64 minimum! I started at 240 highest and currently I weigh 165- my goal is 140 so 25 lbs away from there! I check the scale every other week because now I dont care about my weight I care about how I feel. By now I can eat anything 6 to 8 oz max if its protein then 6 max. Carbs I can stuff more lol. I ate carby foods and gained 10 pounds and I acknowledge every savory bite. Breaks over!! I'm going back to protein shakes and sticking with my vitamin…

I have lost 85 pounds in 6 1/2 months. My upper part of stomach is moving down and lower part is moving, but waist is not measuring any smaller in last couple months. Is this due to stomach moving down ?

How soon can I hit the gym? I do mostly upper body weight lifting and bicycling. I'm only one week out but I see the weight coming off already....heck I'm still on liquids. I don't want to sag yet?!

  4. Started by Fiddleman,

I remember someone posted a link to the proper way to do squats for dead lifts (Mark?) a while back. I was not able to locate it with search. Here is my problem: my flexibility stinks so when I try and even do air squats my natural inclination is to bend forward instead of going straight down, as is sitting in a chair. My flexibility might stink because of all the running I do. Hoping yoga will make it easier. I know how to do the squats but my body just does not want to do them very well. Does anyone have advice on how to fix this squat flexibility issue? I really have to self talk and focus in order to get the form close to right. Even then my butt is still not g…

  5. I'm a pre op. When I was younger and closer to a normal weight, I enjoyed a lot of fun activities... Mountain hiking, skiing, sailing, biking on trails in the woods, etc. I've had to give up these more strenuous activities because of my weight and this saddens me. I look forward to getting back into these activities in the future once I'm healthier. My question is, how do you keep hydrated after the sleeve with these activities? It's not like you can just sip from a bottle that's right next to you when you're at the gym. I'm worried I'll get sleeved and then because of dehydration risk, I will be unable to participate in some of these activities. Anyone have any …

here's a good investment invest in getting one of those sweatbands that go around your stomach because it also helps control your stomach when you do aerobics. you can get one is called golds gym and it's around five dollars at Walmart.

So I took my 1st Body Pump class tonight and OMG my legs and arms are so exhausted... It hurts to go up stairs or to lift my arm...but don't mind ...its something I never would have done before and after class I even stayed and biked for 30 min.. I'm actually enjoying exercise crazy And before when I would bike or trendmill 30 min seemed so long today on my own it was like a breeze and I kept making myself do sprints. I have gotten into spin classes!

Those that are working out at least 5x a week- do you find yourself hungrier more often? Not sure if normal or means I need a fill.

  13. Started by amytug,

I want a hard round tush!! Lol I've googled it and found a few moves bit what are your fave moves? I suck horribly at squats. I do baby bun presses, side lying leg lift, dog kicks. Fire hydrant ain't Happenin' just yet. Lol What else is there? I'm also pretty sure I'm not doing the dog kicks right because I really don't feel much of a burn. I have 5 lb dumbells I've been using for a couple back moves but I think they're Way too heavy for me just yet. I can't do very many reps. What are your favorite moves for the back?

Hey MFP users, I have a question for y'all! When you log your exercise it adds calories back into your daily count. Do you adjust it somehow so no matter what exercise you do you stay at a certain set calorie count? Forgive me if this is a stupid question. I've tracked calories before but never the exercise. Thanks a bunch!

I'm now 2 weeks post-op and have been exercising, with no problems, since about 4 days after surgery. So far just cycling in the gym and a lot of walking. My usual gym workout also includes using a vibration plate, does anyone have any idea how long after surgery it would be ok to go back to this?

  16. Today my husband and I cleaned up and organized our garage, and it made my heart hurt a bit. I hate that I have a garage filled with adventure waiting to happen, but that right now I don't feel good enough to do any of it. One wall holds our Kayaks, another our hiking/backpacking/camping equipment, another our bikes. (see attached pictures). When I started working on my health 7 years ago, my heart starting yearning for adventure, and while I have been on some amazing hikes, bike rides, and kayaking trips at this weight, it still holds me back (though I am 75 lbs down from my heighest weight) and I get so frustrated at the fact I'm slower than everyone else. I'm 4 months post-op. So far I have lost 103 pounds. I have also lost a lot of muscle. I have been using an exercise bike for about 6 weeks. I started doing strength training at a gym 3 weeks ago. I bike 20 minutes a day. With the strength training, I use ten different machines - five that work on the arms and five for the legs. So far, I do two sets of ten at each machine. I should mention that I have neuropathy in my feet and walking/running is difficult. My question is this: My heart rate isn't increased at either activity. Is this a problem? Do I need to sweat to experience a benefit from this exercise?

I am really thinking about getting a personal trainer to help were I am lacking. I was wondering if anyone has used a personal trainer and their results. I have the cardiovascular portion figured out it is the strength training/weight lifting part I am not so good on. I have lost 110 pounds and have a lot of excess skin and no excess money to get a TT

  21. I went to a new exercise class tonight (kettlebells) and felt lightheaded during the class and had to sit down. The class is more strenuous than the other exercise i do (UK class equivalent of curves 3 x a week). The problem might be the timing of the class (7.30pm) and eating. I had not eaten before the class (plenty of water) so I think this might be the issue. If I did need to eat before class what should I have? protein, protein drink, banana? I am clueless so need your help. Thanks

  22. I have been tracking every day using MFP. I have increased my exercise levels a lot and I am not sure how to or if I should even be adjusting my intake at all according to my work outs. HELP!! Today After inputting everything into MFP I consumed 808 calories and I burned 798. Can anyone give me any suggestions or pointers as to what the proper thing to do here is. Do you still stick to the original 800 consumed and ignore the calories burned? Do you need some extra fuel either pre or post exercise and if so what kind and amount? I am 4 months post sleeve. Thanks

I had a VO2 max test today, along with my BMR test. Very interesting data. I learned that my BMR is 2174.... 4% above average for a man my age and weight....good to know it hasn't been reduced down to nothing after so much weight loss and so long on a reduced calorie diet. My VO2 max was 46.3 which according to their report was very good. They were also able to give me very precise target heart rate zones for burning fat versus burning glycogen while working out. It's nice having the exact numbers rather than using the online guesstimations that are all over the Internet. I'd say for many people this info may not be very important or necessary, but if you want …

Post surgery, I have been walking and doing random "activity" at the YMCA. But, I wanted something a little bit more structured and I am a morning workout person. Started looking for something I could do at home. I tried Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD and liked it. Was about $10 at Wal-Mart. It's short (only 25 min or so) and she shows how to modify moves to make them easier or harder. After doing this workout for a week and feeling like it was something I could stick with, I checked her website. She has a 90-day program called Body Revolution. Total of 15 DVDs that mix cardio and circuit type training. It is a 30 minute workout, 6-days per week for 90-days t…

I want to switch up my pm powder to one that slows down the catabolic state that the body enters at night. Stop eating what little muscle I have Mr. body. Now! I read that a long lasting Protein powder like casin will help. Currently I am using an extended whey based powder that is designed to last 4-5 hours. Looking for a good powder that will keep my body fueled with protein throughout the entire night. Which one do you use for pm? Amazon has several with good reviews so thought I would ask my WLS friends.

I am looking for the best cardio workout DVD for the Wii. I thought about joining a gym with a trainer to help me tone up but, it is very expensive and I want to make sure I have full commitment by working out at home first before shelling out that kind of money. I would like to tone my arms and abdominal area. I have lost almost 70lbs since being banded in June 2012 and I have barely worked out. I think my weight loss is slowing down and I want to kick start it back up, plus toning up couldn't hurt either . I have heard about Bob Harpers DVDs and also so Zumba ones are fun too. What does everyone think? All suggestions are welcomed!

  39. I am about 3 weeks out and obviously I'm going to wait until I get cleared for more exercise from my doctor at my 1 month appointment. I have a boxing club a few minutes from me that I really want to check out. I've always enjoyed the heavy bag classes, kickboxing, etc. you don't actually fight another person. My question is, how in world do I get enough calories to make it through these classes? Right now I'm good to make it to 700 calories. I get so bored just walking so I'm looking forward to the perks of boxing as far as cardio and resistance. Any advice? I'll ask my doc about this too but just thought I'd see what anyone else has experienced

  40. My knees went out last July. After months of suffering with it and not being able to go up stairs, I went to the doc and was diagnosed with Grade 4 Chondromalacia (Runner's Knee or patellofemoral syndrome). I don't run. I got it from being overweight, stairs at work, and lifting my father who I cared for at home. squatting and lifting were the main culprits according to my doc. Is anyone else battling this? I'm on Celebrex (which is useless), tried PT and a chiropractor. I'm really frustrated because it is keeping me from working out like I want. I'm hoping that after surgery when the weight drops it will get much better, but I'm scared because I know the damage is alrea…

For the guys - would you rather be superman, batman, hulk, Thor, captain america, gladiator (aka Russell crow) or spartan ( from "300" movie) and why? For the gals- what body type would you like to see in your guy or potential guy? Mine would be Thor. Not huge, but incredible strength and agility. He was still awesome as a mere mortal after powers got stripped.

So regardless of how obese I am or have been I have always been in sports and loved running. now that I am 50 lbs down from highest and 30 from surgery I feel like I can become more serious about being active in these ways. The gym today was great, its always hard getting myself there but once I am I enjoy it. I love laying in the sauna relaxing afterwards too! My goal is less about weight-loss with the gym (thats what my diet is for) its is more about building lean muscle, losing inches and getting tighter. I know the skin will be an issue at the end regardless but I want more lean muscle

Fat is the ultimate three-letter word, especially the kind that you spend so much time watching your diet and hitting the gym to keep at bay (or at least to keep off your butt). But beyond making you look less-than-svelte, fat can have significant physical and emotional implications.
