Here comes the sun !! What time of day do you workout and why

Okay - in keeping with the thread, I'm working on getting my exercise program together. I've been walking regularly; about 20-30 minutes, 5 times a week. Sometimes I jam it on the treadmill, but it causes further pain issues with my back. I saw the spine doc last week, and I'm starting physical therapy next week; 2 times per week.

My ultimate goal with the PT is to have them set me up on a program, that is "friendly" to my physical issues; bad knee, herniated disc with leg and hip pain. I have a way to go, but at least I'll be working with people who KNOW what's best for me.

I tried Curves about 18 months ago, and they have NO clue how to deal with people with physical issues. I almost blew out my knee completely, and was able to get out of the membership. Now.....I'm moving in another direction.

In Florida, if you want to exercise outside you have to be flexible (and I'm not referring to limber limbs!) I have been riding my bike a lot lately. A couple of friends and I are training to ride the Pinellas Trail in January - all 37 miles of it! We have started at 5 mile a day and will increase one mile each week. That will put us to the date we wanted to shoot for - mid-January - riding 34 miles. We have found the 7 pm hour is usually pretty nice for riding in May. By July we'll have to switch to early mornings when it isn't so hot. We have a gym in our community, albeit a very small on, and we have started going on off-cycle days. Need to train the upper body as well.

Hey Carolina,

I am psyched reading this!!! You totally totally get it. I am impressed that you are going to group fitness - it's an important stage along the road to Freedom - as you said it's a big mental thing and you will get real physical benefits. For me I found that people were supportive especially after I was consistently in class week in week out month in month out - which feels good.

A huge key to exercise is to keep mixing things up - what you do and how intensely you do it - blending strength and aerobic. This keeps our body guessing and adapting therefore we drop pounds and inches more quickly and see REAL life physical gains - less pain etc... Even faster

Thanks for sharing the specifics and keep spreading the word on the power of exercise!

seems odd that obese people are rarely seen in the places (they) need to be. why is that? ashamed, embarrassed, fear other people judge.....why i didnt go.

but i live in a mayberry small town

its alittle tap/dance studio about 1/2 block from my house and i just walk there..to think 11 months ago, i couldnt even walk that far..

and there are about 4 or 5 of us....i am the biggest one and the oldest one (ripe old age of 47) but i am THERE......i am working in my fitness level..looking in the mirror at ME and knowing each step i do with my feet/legs and my arms going up and down, that it is WORKING.....

i am burning fat in oxygen and working in my fitness level...the more i do it, the higher my fitness level becomes....just lifting my knees alittle higher or my arms alittle higher ups my heart rate....What a great feeling...

and then after 45 min, i merely walk home

and hub and kabo the doberman are waiting on porch for me

I'm in sales so I set my own schedule. I keep a fully stocked gym bag in my car every day so I can hit the gym after sales calls are done but before I go home to finish paperwork. If I don't go while I'm out' date=' I know that it's highly unlikely that I will go back.

Powerful axiom as planning is critical to success and it also indicates how much someone really values something. People say they want this or that in life but you can usually tell how much they REALLY care about it value based on how much Time they invest in it and Planning is the same. I love the idea of the emergency workout bag in the trunk - so you can get it done no matter what.

Oh thanks for the encouragement : ) I am still dropping to get to "goal" weight but its not a race - there is no finish line - the "truer" measure of my transformation will always be based on blood work and fitness level - People always say its about lifestyle change and I have found that to be very true.

I love that you have a plan in place and action is happening !! Yes gyms aren't really knowledgable about how to deal with people that have the type of issues you have. In fact few trainers unless specifically certified in orthopedic issues know what to do. I am sure the PT people will help and give you a suitable plan. If you have been cleared to walk that's huge as you can do a ton of good with walking - by attacking your training like a runner (just walking) doing intervals, long slow, incline, other purposeful approaches. You may find that they will approve yoga which could help with flexibility and core strength and bring you some pain relief.

Keep attacking the problem as you are from several angles and you will find your Freedom.

This is SO GREAT!! I especially really like how you have an event you are training for (that always helps motivation) you have found like minded people to train with (also a big bonus) and you have Planned out your path to success with small incremental increases, this IS ALWAYS the Key to fitness success !! Can't wait to read about how the trail ride went - that supposed to be a very nice trail and a strong cycling community in Pinellas.

Thanks, Lee. I would love to do yoga, but I can't sit on the floor in many of the poses. I have a pretty bad herniated disc, and the bone doesn't move normally (it shears). I have a follow up appt. with my spine doc this afternoon. Disc repair surgery is in my future, but for now I'll probably opt for the PT and some more epidurals. I hate this sh-t!!

I can walk, but after awhile my hip will tighten up (from the disc). Leg pain, blah blah. Sometimes I'll get a really good walk; up and down the hills where I live, etc. But I pay for it later in the day, as everything tightens up horribly. This is all very frustrating, because I've had long periods in life where I was pretty fit.

I totally get it ... I have back issues and had a series of epidural a and eventually had Radiofrequency neurotomy which helped. But your situation sounds way worse than mine. I also have arthritis in my knee etc... You have the right idea just keep seeking the solution and you will find it. Back injuries are the worst to deal with in my opinion but it can be done. Your refusal to quit is inspirational : )

Rosie - good to see you! I haven't seen any posts from you in awhile

It's the time of year in Florida when we get a lot of company. Spring breaks up north drive them down here. Others just come down because they are sick of the cold! Also, I just finished finals from one semester, had a quick week of time off, and now back into another semester. So my time has not been my own as of late. I pop in once in a while but don't have time to keep up with the conversations. Think of everyone here often during the day - like between meals when I'm struggling with hunger pangs and I imagine the encouragement each of you would give me or when I accomplish a NSV.

I get up at 4:15am on weekdays to get my workout in before work. On weekends either first thing or after 12:30 when my kids take their nap. Summer vacation is going to be a challenge actually.
