Pre-op Diets and Questions

Pre-op diet questions for any weight loss surgery. For recipes, use the Recipe Sharing forum.

  1. Started by GotItDoneInHarlem,

I'm 8 weeks out from surgery if all goes as planned. My surgeon has my pre-op diet as 2 liquid meals and 1 solid OR all liquid meals for 2 weeks pre-op. That leaves me six week to prepare for that. Has anyone received a calendar or list of recommendations for how to eat prior to that to help make the transition easier? I'd also appreciate personal plans as well. I just want the 2 weeks pre-op diet and then the clear/full liquid and puree stages of the post diet to be a bit less of a shock. People who I see on these forums that are unhappy or regret surgery immediately post-op also appear to be the ones that are struggling most with the "loss" of food. Thanks fo…

I have my nutrition evaluation on the 4th of November. Is that when you typically get your pre-op diet instructions? I have a friend that used the same dr. and she said she didn't have to do a pre-op diet. Will I regret not doing one?? Help!

  3. Starting my 3rd week on the pre-op diet. It was a breeze before, but now that PMS has come around I am absolutely STARVING! Any suggestions for getting through? My pre-op diet looks like this: 3 Protein shakes per day (I use EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control) 1 solid meal consisting of: 4-6 ounces very lean protein 1 non-packed cup salad greens with fat free, oil free dressing 1 cup steamed non-starchy veg I don't want to go off my plan, just wondering how I can dress all this up to make it more filling.

I have been reading all of the posts about two weeks liquid pre op diet. my hospital requires 13 day high protein, low fat, low carb ( 20g - 60g per day, close to 20 as you can get ). the day before surgery is clear liquid only. and no nasty colon cleanse night before. I am very lucky

  7. My name is McButterpants, and I'm a breadaholic. So, I've been really working hard on my diet in preparation for my surgery next month - trying to do more Protein and less carbs, incorporating shakes, monitoring portion sizes, etc. I've been really cutting back on bread, almost to the point of elimination. Bread has a particularly strong hold over me and have been doing well...until last night. The dreaded garlic bread. I started my dinner with some grilled chicken which tasted really good and some baked Beans. I was satisfied. My husband cooked some fish and rice pilaf for him and my son, but I just couldn't stomach that last night for some reason. I wanted chi…

  8. Started by skinnyminnieme,

I'm not allowed to have any carbs(one slice of bread or one tortilla a day), not allowed any sugar in my diet, using truvia, allowed as many veggies as I want (except-corn, potatoes of any kind, beets, butternut squash, and carrots. All of which I love!) but I can have lettuce and all othe veggies. Only allowed one dairy, 2 legume, one nuts or seeds, four oils, two fruits, and three proteins a day. Anyone else on such a strict diet? I feel like I need new recipes soon and I just started this diet four days ago. And this is all pre-op!! Please any advise.

Anyone else have trouble sleeping after starting Pre-op diet? I am usually a head hits the bed and I'm asleep kinda girl but last night I was up til at least 3am and even then barely stayed asleep. It's going to make for a fun day today!

  10. Started by new_me_2013,

I thought the pre-op diet would be hard as hell...well it's not great but I started my 2 week liver shrink diet Tuesday, today is Sunday & I've lost 12.5 lbs. I've NEVER been able to get the scale to budge like that. I'm sure it's mostly water weight but I can even feel a difference in my work uniform pants! I'm totally motivated by watching the scale moving....if this is any indication of how it will be after surgery I can't wait! My only fear is loose skin but I know it's gonna happen most likely. Good luck to everyone...my surgery date is 9/10 so only 1 more week on this liver shrink diet. I know I couldn't follow it for life, too many temptations out there bit I h…

  11. Started by lawree,

So I went shopping today at GNC, Vitimine Shoppe and Publix to stock up on a variety of protein shakes for my 2 week pre-op diet, which starts on Monday. I am concerned about being able to stick to it. All the drinks i have sampled have terriable after tastes. My husband says "you just have to power through it" but i am really concerned. My brain is like okay lets go but my mouth is like nope-not gonna happen. AHHHH it is so frustrating.

  12. Howdy Sleevers! This is my 1st post as a lady with a surgery date on liquids... I'm on Day 5, and I am having a HARD time! I'm pretty sure I could be described as "hangry" (something another poster created as hungry+angry). Yesterday, we had skills competencies at work, and I'm lucky I got out with my dignity intact! I was SO hungry, shaky, dizzy, and FRUSTRATED that I wanted to punch innocent people in the throat. Like Godzilla terrorizing the city, I was lumbering through the delicate art of nursing, growling and sniping, while trying not to land in jail for accosting innocent bystanders who were drinking my beloved Dr Pepper. It has NOT gotten easier day by day …

  13. It tasted UH-MAZING!!!! lol. There are pretty much no carbs in it as the egg noodles were thrown out. I'm sure there are at least a few, but hardly anymore than 8g, if at all. Otherwise, there is no sugar....I just worry about all that soy lecithin!!!! Either way.....I'm transferring to home made broth/stock post-op from the bouillon variety (there's no Protein....wtfudge). Gonna go make some and freeze it in cup sizes for that exact use today. I have 4 quarts of the good stuff on the freeze but.......it isn't portioned so it's pretty unrealistic to try and unfreeze that, unless I'm making a large batch of something. That's actually what I'm saving it for. Anywho....fir…

  16. I am scheduled for 7/30, one week from today. The instructions I have been given are simply: Try to lose weight Don't binge Replace one meal a day with a Protein shake, starting at least 4 weeks before surgery Well, I have been actively working to lose weight since 6/1 by counting calories (keeping under 1800 or so usually) and exercising almost every day. I am down about 25 pounds since 6/1, 30 from my highest. I don't worry over where my calories come from (percentages or grams of fat, carbs, protein. However, I naturally attempt to eat more protein and less carbs because I find that more filling and allows me to eat fewer calories without being hungry. I obviousl…

Ok, so im on my fourth day of my pre op diet and OMG....today i felt like passing out. Im not even on a liquid diet yet, thats two days before surgery..but i feel like crap today! Really dizzy, shaky, nauseated, having cold sweats and everything. ...is this normal?! I was fine the first three days, but today was NOT a good day...ugh i hope this feeling goes away..

  19. I am only having to do a 2-day clear liquid diet before surgery and I'm already worried about what I'll "eat" when I feel hungry during that time. I hate jello, but something tells me that I'd better acquire a taste for it! I am thinking I can have chicken broth & popsicles. What else did everyone eat while on clear liquids?

Today is the first day of my pre-op diet. I'm not sure if I'm loving it or hating it, mainly because I am sick as a dog with severe allergies. I don't feel physically hungry but the mental hunger keeps rearing its ugly head. I do have a headache and can't tell if its from the drastic reduction in calories or a symptom of allergies. Also, I noticed not everyone is prescribed the same pre-op diet. Mine's consists of 2 protein shakes, 1 meal of 1oz chicken, 1/2 cup green beans and 1/2 cup of mashed potatoes and lots of h2o and low cal. fluids for 2weeks.

  25. I have successfully completed my pre-op diet. I have been dieting seriously since May and did not expect to lose much weight over the last two weeks. I'm happy to say that I lost 9 pound following my pre-op diet. The Bariatric Center I attend has the following pre-op diet... 800-1000 calories per day 60 - 100 grams of Protein minimum 80 - 100 grams of carbohydrate (yes, we certainly can lose weight eating carbs!) 48 - 64 ounces of calorie free, caffeine free fluids per day. This diet was easy for me to follow as I had already reduced my calories. I was amazed that I was never hungry. I ate mostly solid foods and occasional protein shakes. A couple of nights w…

  28. I'm on a low carb, high Protein diet until my surgery (haven't been assigned a date yet). I'm only allowed 20 carbs per day. I miss fruit and vegetables- ate them all the time before. My typical breakfast was 2/3 cup low fat cottage cheese with 1c strawberries and 1/4c blueberries. I can't stand eggs more than 2 days in a row for breakfast or I was going to hurl. I need variety- but has to be breakfasty! So I found this recipe for low carb Protein Powder pancakes- 9 G protein and 3G carbs per pancake and made them for breakfast this morning. Man, they look great, but they are so freaking dry I couldn't get them down! That's a bust. Anyone have some good low car…

  30. Started by Alajane,

Someone tell me if my thinking on this is skewed. My pre-op diet says to start weaning yourself off caffeine, but I wonder if that's necessary. I understand that I can't have it post-op because it irritates the stomach, but since the diet list says "start weaning yourself off" I can't see any reason I can't continue to have it until the day before. My reasoning is that with my desk job, if I'm caffeine free, I nearly fall out of my chair in the afternoons! And after surgery I'll be at home recuperating for 2 weeks, so what does it matter if I'm sleepy then. Please tell me if I'm wrong here, and if so, why. Thanks, Jane

I went to the Vitamin shoppe today and picked up some samples of the Syntrax nectars Protein drinks...so far I have tried the Caribbean one and as long as I put a lot of ice...it tastes really delicious! 36. Hey everybody! I've been a lurker, but decided to finally post something. I got a surgery date, and am scheduled for 5/21. I'm super excited about the life changing journey ahead of me. I've done really well with the high protein/low carb diet mandated by the nut, but this weekend had pizza and italian for one last time. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Don't get me wrong, it was definitely yummy, but just not as good as it 'used to be'. I guess subconsciously I also knew how unhealthy it was. Dinner: 4oz lean meat and unlimited non-starchy veggies. Snack: 1/2 cup veggies. I can have unlimited veggies all day as well as needed. Easier than many other's diets, I know. Day one. So easy. Day two. So easy until I had a Martial Art boot camp (at night) and had to go at full speed for two and half hours. When I got home, I was starving. I stayed within the above guidelines but then added two more ounces of lean Protein. (CHEATER!!!!) Day three. I did an all day vendor fair …

  38. Hello! Please help me! I was told by my NUT to drink 2 shakes and a healthy meal (high protein low carbs) or 3 shakes to help me lose the 10 pounds I needed to lose. The problem is she recommended Ensure which has 40gr of carbs / 22 g sugar. I followed her advise and gained 2.8 lbs in about a week! Can you please tell me what shakes have you tried (and liked) that can help me achieve the ultimate goal of losing the remaining 8 pounds I need to lose before my next appointment in 12 days! (My surgeon will not schedule my surgery until I lose the weight!) Thank you in advance for your help.

I am trying to train myself with better habits. I see a lot of posts about dehydration I have never been good with getting my whole intake of water in on a daily basis. I purchased a new .75 liter Camelbak water bottle because I figure it will keep me honest as to what I drink being that it labels the ounces. I filled it up with Crystal light this morning and threw it in my bag or at least thought I did until I got to the train and saw I forgot it at home! Ughhh tomorrow will be a new day!
