I'm so terrified of being hungry and emotional with this new way of eating. If I can't do it pre-op, I start it May 20th, then how will it be after surgery??

  2. Started by anm968503,

Have to do a high protein low calorie diet. Any good suggestions?

Hello Everyone..thank you for your informative posts. I'm in the midst of appointment h*ll! tomorrow is the NUT seminar, which is 3 hrs long. A few weeks later, I have the "one on one" NUT appt that will take 30 mins. Any ideas what the 30 min appt is for? Only asking because I want to hold off surgery til mid October, and if that meeting with the nutritionist is for her to load me up with diet shakes, maybe I should reschedule for a later date. Thank you!

Hi, I posted recently but go no replies/feedback I hope this time I'll be lucky, lol. Well, my PCP told me that by looking at the paperwork we have so far, the surgery should be by August. I figure Sept the latest. I can't wait. I have started to prepare since last week. I have been watching what I eat, keeping a diary and drinking more water, I want to know if the nutritist will give me a meal plan or a list of things I can eat or not. It would be easier with more structure. I am tracking my calories right now and making sure I don't go over. I haven't yet. For example, yesterday I went to Applebee's and ordered a Chicken Ceasar Salad. I ate the chicken first, I did no…

  7. I woke up day 4 of my pre-op liquid diet with my jaw and teeth hurting. This sucks, I have never done anything like this and my body and mind must be tripping not chewing. Sleeping with a mouth guard and keeping my tongue on the roof of my mouth to not clinch my teeth. Anyone one else experience this?

I start my liquid diet tomorrow and I have no idea what I'm allowed to eat and not eat! My dietician didn't help at all. He just took me to the store they have inside the doctors office and showed me some boxes but really didn't tell me what I was and wasn't allowed to eat. Can someone tell me some stuff?

Just wondering how long everyone's pre-op diet was/is?

  13. I've been on the pre-op diet since last Tuesday. Mine is only Protein shakes as meals & Clear liquids in between. Ive lost 13 lbs so far. I've been doing well but today I caved and ate a piece of chicken breast. I've seen that others are allowed to eat chicken & veggies. Today is Monday and my surgery is Friday. Advice: Should I call my surgeon's office & tell them? I think the chicken would be out of my stomach by Friday so I don't know what type of danger it would cause. Advice, please! :-)

I'm on Day 4 of two weeks of liquids. Technically mine will be It's getting easier thank goodness. The 2nd day, I was in a foul mood and angry at anyone & everything! It felt like every cell in my body was screaming for food. It took every ounce of willpower I had to not run screaming from work and go get a cheeseburger from Burger King. I drank lots and lots of Water on Day 2 and when I woke up on Day 3, I felt much better. It must really be like a detox, isn't it? I am allowed to have Carnation Instant Breakfast packets, Protein shakes, broth, sugar free Jello and limited amounts of sugar free pudding & cottage cheese. I hope I can keep this up. I will, be…

I'm starting my pre-op diet on Monday and I'm a little nervous, but much more excited. I don't have a date yet, but my doc told me to go ahead and start because my insurance is pretty quick with their decisions. I'm determined to stick to it, because I figure if I can't stick to this for two weeks, I don't need to have the surgery. Wish me luck everyone because I'm going to need all of the positve energy I can get.

For my pre op diet I can have 3 protein shakes and all the water I want. I am on day 1 and I think Im dying, emotionally and physically! I knew this would be hard but not this hard! I did well through the day but I have a terrible headache and am vomiting. I always get a headache when Im hungry....and when my headache gets bad enough, I get sick. Medicine won't touch it. I just don't know how I'll get through 2 wks of this... I desperately want to lose wt and get healthy but right now I have no willpower or motivation. Maybe Im just meant to stay fat. Very disappointed in myself....

Hi there, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good resources online or books to help with this. Especially looking for a free website that is good at showing true carb counts (like net carbs), I'm using myfitnesspal currently and it's ok for a starter. I want to know more food choices I can make to maintain a 40 carb/ 1200-1500 cal a day diet. I'd appreciate it. I hope someone has time to post an answer by tomorrow evening before I get groceries. Thank you all so much in advance and have a great weekend!

  27. Started by skinnynaked,

I am going to murder someone before Friday gets here! If I cannot have anything solid and no carbs or sugars why can't I have meat? Why does it HAVE to be liquid only? Shouldn't the no carb, no sugar shrink the liver enough? Did any of you "cheat" before your surgery? I ate a bite of chicken.

  28. Started by Caradina,

My doctor requires a 2 week pre op diet to shrink the liver. It is not a liquid diet. The requirements are basically no sugar, and less than 30 carbs daily. He said to eat mostly lean protein, like the Atkins diet. I'm followign it religiously... and I'm gaining! Fast! I also am constantly hungry and have constant heartburn from all the meat and eggs. I'm also exhausted and retaining water like mad. Ideas? I'm tempted to just drink protein shakes and nothing else until I go next week, because this diet is making me feel horrible.

  29. Started by Missmarbe,

My pre-op dieat is confusing me!! My surgery is on 3/21 which means I am supposed to be on Day 4 of my 2 week pre-op. Thing is, I cheated horribly the first 3 days and I am ready to get back on track because I DON'T want to get re-scheduled, gain weight and I realize how serious this diet is to the being compliant after I am sleeved. The only thing is, I don't know how many carbs, sugars or grams of fat ar too much. The diet they gave me was confusing meal replacement shakes and bars, which I brought the minimal amount. I thought about just doing a straight up liquid diet, fat free, sugar free, no carbs. All of the protein shakes I have purchased have carbs and fat. What i…

What did your full liquid pre-op diet consist of? My surgeon just sort of glossed over this topic since I'm a band to sleeve revision. However, I wasn't required to do a pre-op diet with my band. So, just so I can get some ideas and know what to shop for, what was on YOUR pre-op liquid diet?

So Kaiser requires a pre-op diet and at first I was pretty nervous about it, thinking to myself, "Dang, I don't know if I'll be able to eat such small amounts!!" but you know what? This has really not been nearly as difficult as I originally anticipated. I pre-measure out my meals ahead of time so that they are handy and convenient. If they aren't convenient, I will just grab whatever delicious, carb-filled treat is near me when I get hungry. I have been on this diet for 2 weeks now and I am down 7 pounds. Not too shabby, especially compared to how little I have lost on diets in the past. Honestly, it is very easy to stick with once you get the portions down right. …

  33. im on day 5 on a 14 day pre op liquid diet and i just feel like i am starving myself. just before I broke down and ate 2 oatmeal Cookies... should I be worried? i just dont understand how all different doctors have different pre op diets... how is it fair that i have to suffer 14 days while some only suffer 3??? it should all be the same guidelines in my eyes...

Hi all! So yesterday was my first official day for my pre-op diet consisting of 3 protein shakes, 1 small yogurt, 2 cups lettuce w/ very light clear dressing, and 2 1/2 cups of SF jello.... Needless to say yesterday didn't turn out so well. I ended up caving in and having a pita wrap with coleslaw for dinner along with some chocolate..... The pre-op diet is hard! I don't know how to go from eating like I used to, to eating almost nothing without the aid of a sleeve! It's getting me depressed because I realize how dependant I am on food to feed the hunger I seem to always have..... and I have to do this for 2 weeks before my surgery on Jan 17th. Today was better but I'm co…

  35. I amd on day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet. OMG. Its getting closer! Anyway, I was given all of these post-op nutrition guidelines and phasing and examples, but for pre-op, was simply told to do full liquids for 6 days prior to surgery and Clear Liquids 1 day prior to surgery. What was not included was whether my pre-op portions/calories/protein targets should be the same pre-op as they will be post-op. The sample post-op full liquid diet phase is 4 oz of Protein shake for Breakfast, 1-2 oz of additional full liquid if still hungry, same for lunch and dinner, and then an evening 4 oz of Protein Shake. is that the total amounts i should have in pre-op phase? That w…

I work with Diabetes patients and thier Insulin Pump Therapy devices, not being focused is not an option for others as well as myself... So I called my Short Term disability people and asked to move my start date to today and then 2 weeks after surgery ( nov 28th is surgery) ... she said it was fine as long as the MD was ok with it... 37. I am about to go shopping to get items for my 2 weeks liquid preop diet which starts Tuesday! Looking at my list I see soups, pudding, protein shakes, etc but no jello. I was pretty sure I could have Jello but as it is Sunday I can't call my nutritionist So what do you guys think...any reason why I shouldn't buy it (I will def call Monday before having it to make sure) or is there a reason for no Jello? I would assume it would be the sugar free kind like the pudding.

Hello! So today is my second day on the pre op diet. I'm supposed to have 5 to 6 protein shakes a day and that's it! The nutritionist said I may have non starchy vegies if I'm starving. Yesterday I did fine. Today however, has been a nightmare. I have had a headache all day (I kinda expected that), I've been dizzy, and threw up twice. I only had 3 shakes. I just ate half a cup of green beans. I hope it works! I just hate that I'm already having problems. I stil have 7 more days of this to go! Has anyone else been through something similar? I believe my blood sugar dropped. I'm feeling really discouraged. Any advice or encouragement is welcomed! Thanks!

So I started my pre-op diet (high Protein, no carb) last Tuesday. I'm getting sleeved November 8 so I'm excited. However, I've messed up a couple times and had some carbs so now I'm worried about the surgery. I know everything will probably be okay but I'm still nervous. My husband was sleeved almost 2 weeks ago and did great. However, me not so much...any advice? Brandy

  42. I am not sleeved yet. I am a little nervous about starting the pre op diet. In the past, on at least two occasions I recall trying a very low carb diet. I would reach that stage of Ketosis and was miserable. Has anyone experienced like thier back or kidneys hurting. It was horrible. I could not lay down or sit down for that matter. I really did not understand. lasted about 2 days and gave up. It was something stupid like cabbage Soup diet and I believe also when I went to the diet Dr. and would take pills that were like an appetite supressants. I I did take ibruprophen and it did help but I was afraid my kidneys were failing. Anyone experience anything like t…

  43. I just had my final Dr. visit yesterday (Wednesday) and he had an opening for Monday; I took it. My question is that since I do not have the traditional 2-3 weeks of pre-diet and a full week of liquid diet, what is my best option? I just checked out the options from WalMart and they have a decent selection of ready shakes: SlimFast (high carb/med sugar, moderate Protein, low fat) Atkins Advantage (very low carbs/sugar, moderate protein, high fat - 9/3.5g) Boost - High Protein (high carb/low sugar, high protein - 25g, low fat) EAS Lite - (moderate carb/low sugar, high protein - 20g, low fat) - not Meal Replacement, designed for post workout. 45. I am a few weeks away from band removal and then have wait time before i get the sleeve. I would really like to start losing weight now, but haven't been too successful on my own. I am considering one of these "programs" for the next few months, just to get some weight off preop. I know, voluntary torture but I am beyond sick, beyond tired of being so fat. I don't feel good, I hurt all the time and I can't stand how clothes fit or how I look. I have generally been pretty okay with myself, even as an overweight person, but I am close to 300# and feel I can barely function. 46. Started by Neoteric Verve,

Today is my pre-op diet day one. I am at 06:00 going through the hows any whys. I have read that this is the hardest part of the Sleeve process. I've been on clear liquid diets before but only for a day or two. Not ten days. I'm told that I can have 4 Protein shakes and a salad. Daily. The goal is minimal calories to reduce "fatty liver". Are the pre-ops usually this strict or is it surgeon-specific? Others in his (my surgeon) office say that keeping calories low is mist important not necessarily what you eat. Well I can't imagine shrinking a liver on an Atkins-style diet. Zone diet maybe but right now I just want to keep the calories way down. What has everyone's ceil…

This pre-op diet is killing me. I started on Aug. 19th, and have had a headache ever since. I feel so tired and weak. It makes me second guess am I doing the right thing about having this surgery. Will this feeling pass in a few days or will this be how I feel permanently . I was thinking if I feel this way before surgery am I going to be weak, tired, and have headaches after surgery. I am on a 2 week pre-op with 2 protein shakes and 1 salad with chicken a day. Does anyone know why I can't have Diet Dr. Pepper on my pre-op diet? I guess I'm having withdrawals.

Technically, I dont have to start the liquid diet until Wednesday since that is technically 2 weeks until my surgery on Sept. 14th. So I thought "what is 2 days? I can do this." Yeah, right. I have had 1 EAS carb control shake so far today and I have been in the kitchen so many times, its not funny.
