Pre-op Diets and Questions

  1. Started by Monica_Lynn,

So I have read many postings how the pre-op diet is a real killer. I will have my surgery date next week and I know it won't be until the first week of October. My surgeon requires 2 weeks of a pre-op liquid diet. I have just ordered a starter kit from Unjury.because I am going to start bringing in liquid items into my diet way before I HAVE to. I have found that this has worked with soda, I have already quit that and caffeine is gone too. I think the only thing I will miss is chewing once I get to that 2 week mark. Has anyone else done this so it isn't such a shock to the system?

  2. Started by Monica_Lynn,

I have read that a lot of people got really bad headaches after starting their pre-op liquid diets. I am prone to migraines and this worries me. I don't have my surgery date yet because the surgeon is waiting for the authorization from the insurance. In the meantime, I have cut out all soda and caffeine to get prepared. My question is for those that have had the headaches, were they caused by cutting out the caffeine or something else?

  3. Ok, right up front I am going to admit I skipped Breakfast. Its still something I struggle with everyday and in my defense for today I slept in and ate within an hour of waking so its not like I starved myself today. I said all that to explain why I have only had 1 meal thus far, I will be eating dinner shortly- A chicken Cesar salad. So I am giving a go at this pre-op diet and HOLY CRAP! I use whole wheat bread so to be perfectly honest (since I try to low carb it anyway because of my PCOS and because I planned a very low carb dinner) I didn't even check the label for the carb content. This morning I changed all my daily limits on my online calorie counter, before tod…

Hi all- I started my pre op diet yesterday and things went pretty well. I was a little tired and ended up going to bed earlier than normal. I'm curious, how much weight did you lose on your pre op diet? My surgeon's diet is two weeks, a shake for Breakfast, shake for lunch, yogurt/fruit/veggies for a snack, and a small dinner. I must admit I'm quite hungry and even dreamed about fried chicken and mac & cheese last night. I found that quite funny because the last time I had a piece of chicken was 7 years ago!

I have a question, my doctor has a specific plan pre-op with packaged meals ( medifast packets ) and i might use the jello (with protein) but have no use nor want to keep the remaining packets. Anyone know of a good use for them or anyone need these? Send me a message.

Hi Everyone! I'm getting sleeved in a little less than 5 weeks, but I have one of those surgeons who doesn't ask his patients to go on a pre-op diet. However, I don't really like the thought of going from eating anything I want to being on a very restricted diet overnight, and would rather ease into it. I see a lot of people on here are on pre-op liquid diets, and was hoping that someone could share their recommendations for a pre-op diet. Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

  7. Started by ravenjeh,

So, I know I have over 3 weeks until my initial visit and to schedule surgery since I am still saving the last few hundred, but I decided to call my surgeon's office today and ask about his pre-op diet. From reading the boards, I assumed it was going to be a 1-2 week liquid diet. But no, he only requires a one day liquid diet. Seems a little unusual. Are there any benefits of dieting a week pre-op rather than 1 day, other than it gets you used to liquids? I might go ahead and get on the liquid diet a few days before instead. Any advice?

  13. Started by Nancy Rivers,

I have a pretty generous pre-op diet compared to some - 4 Protein shakes made with skim milk plus 6 other foods per day that include fresh veggies, Soup, yogurt, applesauce, oatmeal and sf Jello. The first 2 days, I did fine - in fact, I couldn't eat everything that I was supposed to as I still had 2 servings of "real food" left at the end of each day. I had thought that maybe I could do this and would not experience the cravings or carb detox as I was taking in 80 g of carbs (thanks mostly to the skim milk). Today is a different story. I am so hungry! And I am craving pizza, sandwiches and lunchables. I know it's most likely me entering carb detox based on what others …

  14. I'm self pay and because of some major changes in my work schedule, I'm able to bump my surgery up sooner (was originally planning for the start of August but am now looking at mid July). My only problem is that I'm supposed to go to Las Vegas (Lost Wages) with my family during the start of the clear liquid diet right before surgery. Do you think that this is possible? I'm not a Vegas-buffet person but I'm worried restaurants there aren't going to have much in the way of Clear liquids that I can eat. What do you think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi everyone, My surgery is this Monday (6/27) going from a band to the sleeve. I am a week into my pre op liquid diet but I now have a HOT DATE! Only the 3rd date, so Mr. Wonderful has no idea about the surgery. I am trying to think of a way to go out to eat without ruining my pre-op diet. I spoke with a friend who said that the diet is more important for you mentally (which I agree) then the actual physical shrinking of the liver and she said one meal shouldnt be a big deal as long as I am back on fulll liquids the next 3 days before surgery (which was her pre op diet). Since every pre op is different - I am thinking if I stick to fish (sashimi) and light vegg…

  19. So per insurance requirements, I have to be on a pre-surgical diet for 3 months and I chose Take Shape for Life with Medifast and have lost 5 lbs in the first two weeks! I think it's a realistic meal plan considering the small, frequent portions I'll have to eat after surgery. Just curious how many others have chosen this path and what your results look like. Favorite meals?

I'm sitting here with a moment of calmness because the slight headache has subsided and I don't feel the need to have another one of those swweet protene drinks. I hadn't had my 800 calories for the day so I think this moment is short lived because the headache will come back and I will have to drink sweet again. Wish I could take a pill to let me sleep for the next 5 days but the pre-op program restricts that. Hope I make it to Wednesday night without a massive meltdown. Wish me luck.......

I was told that I have to do a 2 week pre-op diet by my surgeon's office. I decided to begin a week early and do 2 Protein shakes per day along with one healthy meal. Today I had to start the surgeon required portion of the diet and I was told that I could have 2 shakes per day, and could only eat Soup, SF Jello, and SF popsicles, though no specific calorie limit was set so now, I have absolutely no idea how many calories I should be eating. Last week I kept it at 1200 per day with a lot of success, I wasn't hungry and I lost 6.5 pounds. Today I've had only 535 calories and I'm not starving, but I am hungry and am not sure if it's ok for me to go up to 800 or if I…

  27. Does it get easier? I just accomplished my first day of my surgeon's pre-op diet which is 6 small meals, 3 of which are protein shakes. I am starting earlier than is asked...he requests two weeks strictly. I just want to give myself a better head start on the weight loss, but God is it hard. I am starving and very grumpy! How many days until it gets easier? What is the norm for the amount of weight you should get off before having surgery? I read somewhere that 5% is common. I am hoping to be able to do that much to give myself some sense of accomplishment. Everyone thinks you are taking the easy way out for having weight loss surgery, but that is so not that cas…

  28. My pre-op 2 week diet (which my surgery had to be moved for) asks for 7 grams of fat, less than 30 grams of Carbs and about 60 grams of Protein. I can eat food, it is preferred until the day before. You'd think someone fat could count fat, but I have no idea how! I can do Atkins..but that's fat! Less food, grill my veggies and chicken? (over the sausage I ate this morning before I read the whole thing..day one failure!). I don't even know how much fat is in cheese, my old stand-by has in it. Ironically, the Dr. had examples of low-carb and high protein items on the sheet, but nothing about Fat-which I will tell him later would be helpful to have. Any obvious ideas? …

I think Im going to starve to death lol. Ok, well maybe not starve to death but IM HUNGRY! I have no idea what all to eat, my doctor gave no guidelines on the pre-op diet other than saying it was full liquids for 2 weeks prior to surgery. Guess I need to go find my after surgery book for some ideas on what to eat. I've had a Carnation Instant Breakfast made with fat free milk and some decaf coffee with vanilla creamer. Not much in the way of calories or substance at all. I'm also using regular stuff, the sugar free stuff makes me gag so Im saving that until I HAVE to switch. 31. So I'm feeling pretty good....finishing up day 2 of my 2 week pre-op diet. I'm allowed up to 50 carbs a day, but yesterday rounded out the night with 28, and right now today I'm sitting at 21 with 1000 calories consumed. Don't get me wrong, physically I feel fine. Been a little bit hungry all day because I've been eating small amounts every 3-4 hours...I never really feel satisfied. I just want some carbs and starches so bad...mashed potatoes, bread, Pasta...you name it and I've got head hunger for it like mad. I know this is so ridiculous. When I went for my first appointment in September I was at 35.1 and my surgeon cautioned me about losing weight prior to approval. Well, I did pretty well at maintaining right up until my last appointment. I finally started cutting back on calories and lost about 8 pounds. However, since getting my approval and have a surgery date (12/28) I seem to be shoveling food into mouth as if I'll never eat again! It has me a little frighened, because I'm just adding pounds I'll have to lose again at the end of the month---not to mention that my body feels terrible stuffing food in all the time. Has anyone else hadthis problem right before surgery?

I started my pre-op liquid protein diet on Friday. My instructions are 2 protein shakes a day plus one meal with a lean protein and a vegetable or salad. I've done my shakes with either water or skim-milk, and it doesn't matter to me which I use. I still get a little hungry between lunch and dinner. I haven't seen the nutritionist yet, but here's my concern. If I make my shakes with water, then between breakfast and lunch, I get 280 calories, leaving 720 calories for dinner. That's a lot! I was wondering if it was okay to have something like half of a tomato, hardboiled egg or cup of green beans with my shake for lunch or a midday snack to counteract the hunger and…

Maybe this is just me stuggling, BUT really why? My doctor has me on liquid and Protein drinks only for TWO weeks. She said it is to soften my liver and reduce the slick fat off of it to make it more pliable in surgery. How exactly does that work. Other people have said that it take alot longer than that for anything really to change in your liver. Is it not eatting solid food that FLUSHES the liver?? Is it not having carbs and sugar? I know I am suppose to follow doctors orders to the letter, BUT if you are slipping is there better slips than others. Protien, real fruits or verggies?? I know the further into I get, MAYBE, it will get easier. That or as…

We had to do a 3 month low carb diet for insurance purposes and now we are supposed to be on a two-week high-Protein diet consisting of meats, green veggies, eggs and cheese ONLY, staying under 20 grams of carbs per day. I'm on day 4 of my two week pre-op diet consisting of 2-3 Protein shakes a day and one "palm sized meal" of fish, chicke or pork with veggies and very limited fat. The pre-op diet scared me most, more than surgery and leaks! I must say it does get better each day and it's nice that I've dropped about 4 lbs. Things I'm doing that maybe I shouldn't: - I feel best in the morning and not hungry, so I don't have a Protein Drink for Breakfast. I hold off until about 11:30 or noon. Then I'm hungry and have the other two around 2:00 and 4:00. Then I white knuckle it to 6:00 and have supper. - The first night I shoved a handful full of parmesean cheese in my mouth I w…
