Pre-op Diet is a killer

Recommended Posts

This pre-op diet is killing me. I started on Aug. 19th, and have had a headache ever since. I feel so tired and weak. It makes me second guess am I doing the right thing about having this surgery. Will this feeling pass in a few days or will this be how I feel permanently . I was thinking if I feel this way before surgery am I going to be weak, tired, and have headaches after surgery. I am on a 2 week pre-op with 2 Protein Shakes and 1 salad with chicken a day. Does anyone know why I can't have Diet Dr. Pepper on my pre-op diet? I guess I'm having withdrawals.

OMG!!! I have to start my preop in about 2 weeks. Believe me I am dreading it. Atleast you can have a salad. My doc only allows a cup of veggies. I am off work til October. Don't know what I'd do if I had to work through it!!! Best Wishes

I struggled on the pre op diet too! I could have 4 slim fasts a day and it was hell. I felt the same way as you. Trust me, you feel way different after surgery I promise! You can do this!

Hi there. I'm on day 6 of my pre-op diet and it isn't' fun, but its gotten easier. After the 3rd day my body adjusted and my stomach isn't growlig as much and I'm not as tired. The one thing that has helped is chewing sugar free gums. Keeps my mind off of food and gives me somethig to chew. Hope things get better for you!

I don't start my pre-op diet until 9/6 as my surgery isn't until 9/20. I remember the nutritionist mentioning headaches during the pre-op diet and saying that it tends to not only come from hunger but also from a lack of caffeine - which we can't have. I hope your headaches subside and that you feel much better soon. Hang in there and be encouraged! All the best to you!

Be well,

Niki

Yeah, it royally sucks! I'm glad I'll never have to do THAT again!

The LAST day was the worst, I was sleeved last December and I didn't want to chance flying in e day of surgery and be late because of weather so I flew in a day early. I sat in a hotel room, stomach churning and rumbling screaming FEED ME - FEED ME! A local pizza chain was bombarding the local stations with commercials, seems like 3 or 4 times an hour the same 5 cheese and 2 bacon pizza ad came on - damn it looked good! I nearly caved and ordered one, but I stuck it out. I wouldn't want my colon to be packed with pizza post-op, had a "hard" enough time as it was.

That's funny Rootman, I have the same feelings, when I see commercials on the TV about food which is constantly I have to turn my head and look the other way. I also want to say you have done an excellent job on your weight loss. Everybody on this forum inspires me with their weight loss. I can't wait to be on the loser's bench. :P

I am on day 2 of the pre op diet. My Dr will only let us have a Protein shake and clear liquids for two weeks. No food. I don't know how I am going to do this. Right now everything sounds better than broth and a nasty Protein Shake. I stopped drinking caffeine last week, the headaches were horrible. I took a lot of Tylenol.

I hear ya- my pre op diet sounds exactly like yours except I found out I can have SF Popsicles and SF Jello and some kind of Yogurt 4 oz with the Protein powder or silk or 1/% milk or carnation instant breakfast-

but pretty much - I just drank broth and tea all day and tried to keep busy.

Course on Day 4 broth and tea have grown real old- I'm hungry, tired, lethargic, sometimes confused and lightheaded- especially If I'm outside getting overheated

carbmaster yogurt has been a good addition and my Unjury Protein vanilla flavor tastes exceptionally good mixed into that- and today I splurged and got egg drop Soup and put it through a strainer- it did wonders for my hunger and the moral booster was much needed -because it's getting really tough.

I was just sleeved last week and the pre-op diet helps a lot for after surgery. My diet was a liquid diet for 10 days. So I didn't get any food intake at all. But you can't eat anything for 2 weeks after your sleeve either. So it helps in the long run. Increase your Protein if you need to help you when you have the hunger pains or feel hungrey. Also try crystal light peach tea, or diet tea to get your caffeen in. But you can't have soda and you can't have that especially after you've been sleeved. It's been more challeging for me to adapt after the surgery. I know it's tough but you will do great!!

I am on the pre-diet now, day 13 and some days are better than others. I remember on day 3 considering postponing my surgery so I could have one last Quarter Pounder. I was stressed at work, had a headache and just knew it would make me feel better. But, I didn't give in and pressed on and each day it has gotten a bit easier. The main thing is to drink lots of Water, a lot of times we feel hungry when we are actually thirsty. The Protein shakes & bars are a lifesaver as well.

My doctor prescribes a two week pre-diet consisting of 5 slim fast shakes/bars and a sensible meal of baked/grilled meat (5oz) and 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables. I cannot tell you how great that one meal is!! Whatever I am having (Ground Beef Patty, Tilapia) it is the BEST I have ever tasted.

Thanks everyone for commenting. It's good to know I'm not the only one struggling. I was thinking it was only me. Well, I am now post op 4 days. I am feeling better but I am so tired of liquids. I keep thinking will this ever end. I think I am having head hunger because I know my stomach feels full but I would love to eat something wonderful. Hopefully soon I will feel better about having this surgery when I can actually chew food .

There's definately a mental change after surgery. That's for sure. When the grelin is gone. It's all in the head about feeling hungry.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
