Pre-op Diets and Questions

  1. Started by Foodie to bypass,

I am really struggling with this while liquid diet thing! I have to do it for 2 weeks and I barely made it through day 1! Are there any tips and tricks that you all have tried that help get through this time!

  2. Hi, I am new to the site, my first post. I just saw the dietician and am overwhelmed by the shopping list of protein drinks, protein waters and protein powders choices to buy in the next few weeks before surgery. Any recommendations of what tastes the best, with little or no after taste? Thank you!

  3. Started by Reina73,

I just started the program and I need to keep a food log. Is there an app that can help me with my protein, fat.and calorie intake for my meals for the month that's easy to use?

  4. I am so excited - I found a really tasty soy protein on Amazon. It's called 365 Everyday in Unsweetened Vanilla. I mixed it with a banana this a.m. and it is so good I would have ordered something like it at a Tropical Smoothie. Heading to the store today with my grocery list for the pre-op and post-op puree phase (since most won't go bad): Unsweetened applesauce, various meat baby food, canned peaches/pears, sugar free pudding, about 60+ AdvantEdge and Atkins shakes, and 15 Healthy Choice meals for pre-op. Going to grab some cottage cheese and 1% milk as it gets closer. I'm not a huge fan of yogurt. Anything you guys particularly enjoyed during the pureed stage…

I've started my pre op diet which includes meal plan ideas etc, it says the calories and carbs to stick to, but doesn't say how much fat I can have. It just says low fat. I've been having 20g of fat a day (as little saturated as possible) is this too much?

  6. I am on my pre-op diet, protein powder 4X per day. I am taking lactaid with it but my stomach is STILL gurgling, gassy and diarrhea is still pretty bothersome. I've been on the diet three weeks already and have another two to go. Could the sweetener be doing this? I am hesitant to buy unflavored/unsweetened because its a money investment and if it doesn't work I don't want to waste it. Any ideas for me? Did anyone else have this issue?

  7. Ok so I'm 10 days post op, YAY! This weekend we have softball, ALL DAY. I'm not worried about the temptation of ball park food. But, how do I go about my full liquid diet while out? I'm sorry I unnecessarily overthink EVERYTHING!??‍♀️

  8. Started by kimmie83,

I'm two day's post up with the no appetite. Was anyone else like this?

  9. I know this sounds crazy but I just started the clear liquid phase of my pre op diet and am on clear liquids until my surgery on October 17. I am so sick of liquids, and at this point I genuinely don’t know how I’m supposed to reach 800 calories on clear liquids only. It’s not that I’m not hungry (man I would kill for a single piece of buttered sourdough toast), but I feel bloated (hormone related) and just exhausted of these liquids to the point where I don’t even want to eat more soup broth. Has anyone else had these issues?

  10. Started by crissy1589,

I was approved for surgery and I'm getting it done on the 23rd of oct... I'm so nerves n excited at the same time ... I'm currently on the 2week diet is it me or did any one else didnt know what else to eat other than salad n chicken lmao.... I'm tired of salad can someone tell me what else did I can eat? plz...

  11. Started by mousecat88,

lol! i was so enthusiastic going into this, knowing I would/will feel better in a few days.. but I am ending Day 1 and this super sucks. i have THE FIERCEST craving for spaghetti. also pork lo mein. I'm still at work, but want to crawl immediately into bed and take sleeping meds so I don't have to feel hungry/have cravings and can just sleep til tomorrow. rinse, repeat until my surgery. ugh, and don't say the cravings go away. i was on a strict low-carb diet for 5 months last year (lost 60 lbs) and those intense carb cravings NEVER went away. need to find a way to not mentally dwell on them, but i sit and just envision the taste in my mouth and it's like a drug. this…

  12. Started by kimmie83,

I'm 7 day PreOp and I haven't been sticking to my 2 week clear liquid diet. At least one of my meals has been some I shouldn't be eating. Will the have a major effect on whether or not I can go through with my procedure? And if you went through this but were able to proceed how did you do after the procedure was completed?

  13. Started by E G,

Hey What are some of your favorite Slim Fast flavors?

  14. Started by Lioness815,

Can anyone recommend their favorite protein shakes... powder or RTD? Taking suggestions. Thanks!

  15. Started by Linda Cooney,

I hope to have gastric sleeve in Houston mid-October. A planner by nature, I would implode if not fully prepared. Have seen many posts about broth frozen cubes and jello with protein and assume that is added protein powder. Would welcome any input from you seasoned sleevers about protein powder - unflavored vs flavored and planning for that first post month. Linda, in beautiful historic downtown Humble Tx

This is finally the last day of my Optifast. Tomorrow I can have clear liquids (sounds heavenly) and Tuesday is "the" day. I don't EVER want to see another Optifast item again LOL.

  17. So, I work as nursing staff at a psychiatric hospital and our crew is very tight-knit. We have potlucks in our nurses’ station for every reason. Birthday? Potluck. Back from vacation? Potluck. Trying patient going back to jail? Potluck. It’s a Saturday? Donuts, chips, and other goodies. Today, I came into work and there was a box of donuts from our psychiatrist because he wanted to show his appreciation. Right now, there’s a bag of Doritos and gummy bears right in front of me as I begrudgingly eat my salad. I’ve managed to do pretty well so far and I haven’t given in to temptation, but man, that apple fritter was calling my name. What are your favorite snacks to keep …

  18. Started by 2-Liter,

NEVER EVER EVER go to the Grocery store when you are 3 days in to your pre-op liquid diet. My preparation left a lot to be desired. I decided that starting my Liquid phase 4 days early was a Great idea lol. They almost had to mop up the drool on aisle 9. I wasn't even obsessing over any of the wrong foods but those Rotisserie Chickens were calling my name laying there looking all Sexy. I am Thankful to say that I survived and left the Store felling like Conan The Barbarian all Rough, Tough and Victorious.

  19. Ugh. Trying to find a salad dressing that actually tastes good. I normally have Thousand Island or Honey Mustard but I haven’t found any low carb, low sugar, low fat dressings. Any recommendations?

Hello there friends. Just finished first month of supervised weight management. I know I have LOADS to work on for the next 6 months until I can fully qualify for surgery. I am looking for a fellow pre op person who is starting this journey or actually anyone who has been down the road also. I need someone to help keep me accountable. I have been doing the food diary thing now for 2 weeks (didn't know until this past Thursday when I attended seminar that it was a thing.) and have been trying to get some ducks in order so I can continue. Things I am struggling with currently: PORTION CONTROL. Holy cow that's huge. Never had to pre measure things out e…

  24. Started by macadamia,

So tonight for dinner, I steamed a couple of servings of stir-fry vegetables, three ounces of grilled chicken breast (with no sauce or seasoning when cooked), a serving of jalapenos, and a dash of Cholula Green Pepper hot sauce. I was taught to clean my plate as a kid and almost always have. Tonight was only the second time that I stopped eating when I knew that the next bite was too much. I had finished all of the meat, all of the jalapenos, and about half of the steamed veggies. I set the plate aside, started my 30-minute timer until I can drink again, and sat back. Within a couple of minutes, I was very full. Officially today, I'm at 705 calories, with 95g…

I'm start my pre-op diet tomorrow morning and I'm having a lot of anxiety about it. I am not a good dieter and this one feels pretty restrictive. I guess they all feel restrictive when you are the one having to do it:) Anyone else starting their pre-op diet this week? I have to do a shake for breakfast, one for lunch, then a lean protein and veggie for dinner. I'm starting a couple of days early so I can get this going on a day off before I have to try to do it at work. I have started a VLOG and did a post about this. Check me out if you get a chance.

  26. Started by macadamia,

I'm in the pre, pre-op diet phase, but trying to transition into the pre-op diet early. I made a parfait this morning for breakfast that tastes awesome and is much healthier than my usual frozen breakfast burrito. I'm really trying to limit my carbs to between 25g & 40g and my sugars to near zero as I can. I used the following: Dannon Light & Fit Greek Nonfat Yogurt, 1 container - 80 cal, 8g carbs, 6g sugars Fresh strawberries, 100g - 33 cal, 8g carbs, 5.1g sugars Fresh organic blueberries, 50g - 28 cal, 7.2 carbs, 5g sugars and Premier Protein, 11 fl. oz. - 160 cal, 5g carbs, 1g sugars This gives me a breakfast that contains 302 carb…

Good morning everyone!!! I just went to my first appointment last week. Doc advised me to start a 6 month diet. I haven't met the nutritionist yet. Just wondering what did you eat? How was it? Any advice on what I should be doing? Thanks in advance!!

  28. Hi all, sorry but has anyone else noticed that the colour of their urine has changed colour since starting the pre op diet? Im two weeks into the diet (total four weeks to do) which includes three protein shakes and one meal a day but I have noticed that my urine is almost neon yellow! is this a side effect of the shakes or something? (and no, its definitely not an STI or other infection, i get tested regularly)

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anybody can recommend a powder whey protein flavorless supplement instead of the clear drinks that were supposed to drink. I tried those things and they were nasty to me at least. I know that I was told you a lot of chicken broth and stuff like that but I know I'm supposed to at least get a hundred grams of protein which is what my dietitian wants. I have already got approved when my psych evaluation and my surgery is scheduled for July 10th. I'm about to start my liquid diet on the 26th and I'm just needing some advice. 31. After reading just how difficult the liquid pre op diet is, I don't think I could function at work on so little food and calories! Thinking of taking that week off from work (my surgeon does not require 2 weeks). Anyone start their medical leave early and stay home from work during pre op diet? Or am I just a wimp? I am meeting with my surgeon on Tuesday but his nurse practitioner told me to already start losing weight. Problem is I don’t know what meal plan to use. Keto, Paleo, Mediterranean, ???? I am not sure where to start. I still have a few months at least until my surgery, but I want to get a jump on it. Any advise from those that have done this would be appreciated.

  34. I was doing so well w/ 2 week preop liquid diet, I've lost over 10lbs so far & following it to a T. I've been having 2 shakes a day & 4oz of lean meat & sm salad &/or celery & carrots for dinner. Well today I had 1 protein shake for breakfast then went to Red Lobster & had Lobsterfest Surf & turf w/ garden salad. The steak was 6oz & I did dip my lobster a few times in butter but my biggest mistake was I ate the mashed potatoes. I've got 5 days til surgery... I feel so guilty now of course. How can I rectify this situation? Laxatives? Make my myself throw up? Drink Mag. Citrate? Or do u think I'll be ok?

  35. venting so feel free to ignore. don’t get why there is such a bias against weed. i met with the dietician and social worker today. both asked me about my marijuana usage and alcohol consumption. i said my marijuana use was down (a half lie? it is down but not as much as i said it was) but alcohol was up due to celebrating graduating college on saturday. they were both disappointed that i didn’t completely stop smoking pot, but had no problem with my drinking. they obviously want time to stop both for surgery, but didn’t seem phased about the drinking. in fact the social worker told me to “party it up” this weekend. granted i’m not phased about the drinking either, i’m r…

hey guys. so at my last appointment the scale showed that i had gained about 3lbs. which is what i had expected between finals stress, graduation celebrations, etc. but they made a really big deal out of it. and i explained myself but i was also kind of like “hey i can’t easily lose weight... hence why i’m here?” i was hoping to get surgery in july but because of my weight gain they have pushed it back to august. at first i was disappointed but now i’m mostly okay with it i guess. i’m just worried because they want me to lose weight (currently at 351 and they want me down to like 345). i know that isn’t a lot of weight, but it’s hard. that’s why i’m getting surgery!!! if…

My surgery is only a month or two out, but I'm just starting to get serious about nutrition and meal planning. I should have started a long time ago, but I'm finally feeling really motivated to do a good job at this. For better or worse, my insurance doesn't require a liquid diet, so I'm very much on my own. I'd like to start planning meals and eating the way I'll have to eat after surgery. I know it'll be difficult, but I also know I really have to do this. If you have any resources for bariatric meal planning could you please share them with me? I'm looking for things like: Meal planning software or spreadsheets? Shopping guides? Tips about…

  44. which is how I ended up where I am today. so if I know logically what I should and shouldn't eat, why do I still overeat? I think I have a legit fear of being hungry, like if I don't eat this now, it might not be here later or if I don't eat now while food is available, I will be hungry later on. I feel like if I don't "fix" these issues before my surgery then I'm going to fail. So much over thinking going on right now. 47. Hi I’m on day 2 of this liquid diet and I have 3 weeks to go! My surgery date is May 28th. I already had a break down and I have been so moody. I’m just confused because from all the forums that I have read, people are allowed to eat yogurt, sugar free popsicles and jello and some even get to have some time of “real meal”.
