Hi everyone - just wanted to see if this was common or not. My two week pre-op diet is not liquids. It’s a diet focused on low calories and high protein, but I get to eat actual food until Day 14. Is this common? I see so many people on here struggling with a liquid diet pre-op and I’m kinda confused why some have it and others don’t. Thanks for any insight!

Hi all, Ill be having the sleeve done later this year. Ive had my first appointment with the surgeon i want to go with, it was just with the nurse that time. I did tell her my private health insurance reaches that one year mark in the middle of October and with my sons birthday a few days later I'd be wanting the surgery to be around early November just so I'm not on the pre op diet on his birthday(a kid only turns 10 once!). They gave me my next appointments to be 19th October which is after that one year mark. Its with the dietitian and the surgeon. So im just wondering what the timeline is like with these appointments?? …

Hey. My surgery is scheduled for 8/10/21. I am to start my pre-op diet on July 27. I'm starting to weed out my sugary and carbonated drinks for water and 0 calorie/0 sugar drinks. Here is a list of what I have already tried for flavored stuff: ICE Sparkling water (yes I know it's carbonated. That's just to help me make the switch off Soda for the next couple weeks) Clear American (same reason as ICE) Propel (not a huge fan but will drink it if I have no other desirable options Different sugar free powdered juice mixes including Crystal Light (the Great Value version which is 0 calories/ 0 sugar) I am planning on trying Splash water today when I bu…

Hi all! I am new to this forum and looking for some support. I’m having my sleeve surgery on July 26. I am hosting a bbq pool party for family (first time we’re seeing each other post COVID) but I will still be in phase 3. What are some good food choices that don’t scream “I just had bariatric surgery”? I was thinking deviled eggs with light Mayo would work…. Any other thoughts? Thanks!

I am trying to taste test as many protein products as I can so I can have what I need in the house ready to use after my surgery, mid June. I would like to hear some recommendations on the best tasting protein soup mixes, and fruit juice/flavoring for water. I've already tested several protein shake mixes. But any and all recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

Just curious about something....the bariatric doctors and nutritionists keep saying 70 to 90 grams of protein a day to keep your organs functioning and muscles from depleting etc etc. but did we all ever really get this BEFORE in our lives? I mean I know my overweight butt only ever has gotten a fraction of that. Just curious as to why the difference in requirement or was this supposed to be the requirement for our bodies all along? Thank you!!!

I am just curious if we are allowed to drink any of the ready to drink protein shakes, such as Fairlife or Premeir being that one has 2 grams of sugar and the other has 1 gram of sugar? I know I can as my dr when I go for my pre surgery appointment on Dec 31st, but I was thinking about ordering some. Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

I am on day 3 of my pre-op diet. It's not liquid but I have to keep calories 800-1000/day, with most coming from protein. Getting in the protein. Still so crazy hungry. I can't concentrate bc I'm so hungry. I've never been this food focused in my life. Any advice for not feeling so hungry??? ~ AuntieMAME

Hi, everyone! I’ve been on my two week pre-op liquid diet faithfully for eight days now. My surgery is six days away. Today, my mom made chili and the aroma overwhelmed me. I caved and put spoonful in my mouth along with three Ritz crackers, chewed it up, and then spit it into the toilet without swallowing. My dietitians have stated and restated how important it is to shrink my liver before surgery. Will this hiccup put me in danger of postponement? I haven’t deviated from liquids any other time and don’t plan to do it again. I rinsed my mouth with water afterward, feeling paranoid that I may swallow a small bit after spitting. In hindsight, it was not worth this fee…

Hello All! I'm Peach! ?? My surgery date is 6 count em.. SIX DAYS away. I was put on a 3 week ALL LIQUID pre OP diet. In the first week I cheated but I have been trying my best. So far I have lost around 10lbs. I see alot of people say that if you are not successful in the diet and your liver doesnt shrink enough, the doctor could sew you back up and not operate. My question is: has anyone ever been sewed back up and not operated on due to their liver not shrinking? Tips, stories, &advice are all welcome.

Hi everyone. I am having a really hard time drinking any of the pre-made protein shakes. They are so thick and have such a overwhelming fake sweet aftertaste. The only one I can somewhat get through is the Fairlife nutrition plan 30g protein shakes, but I am afraid there is no way in God's Green Earth that I will be able to drink these day after day for the upcoming pre-op diet. So, I am search of places to purchase trial and/or sampler packs of protein powder. I would really like to avoid purchasing an entire tub and not be able to choke it down. Any and all suggestions welcome! Also would love protein shake recipes! Thank you!

Has anyone done a 1200 calorie diet for like 2 months straight (eating healthier foods) and then cheated and ate something you haven't had since before your diet then had an allergic reaction to it? I cheated on Christmas day and then again yesterday and ended up having my throat close up on me, could hardly breathe. I didn't eat anything new that I've never eaten before.. just hadn't eaten those things for the past 2 months. I feel like my body is punishing me for cheating lol Thankfully though those situations made me decide I'm not cheating again.

Hi! I've been reading for a while but this is my first post. My surgery is on January 13th. My pre op diet is pretty loose (basically just stay under 1000 calories a day and aim for high protein/low carb). My post op diet is a little more detailed but my surgeon is pretty big on getting off the liquid only as quickly as possible and not just chugging protein drinks. So, when I don't have super strict guidelines to follow, I do much better if I meal plan a week or two in advance. Has anyone used an app to meal plan? Or does anyone have a meal planner suggestion from amazon? Also, bonus question, I have 3 teenagers. I'm trying to figure out how in the heck to…

I have always spent a lot of money on groceries. Food was just a given, we live in the country so a trip to the grocery store was always between 200 to 300 dollars and we went frequently. I have a large garden and can a lot and we have our own beef and pork so I never buy meat at the grocery store so basically I am buying garbage at the store but I a year ago I would have never admitted that. So the last few months I have been very diligent about what we purchase and reading a lot of labels and I am shocked to see how much more expensive healthy high protein foods are. I have found I really like the taste and texture of the Fuel for Fire protein smoothies but the…

I’m going to ask this question to my surgeon as well, but I’m wondering if anyone here knows: Is there a reason that protein snacks (e.g. Kay’s Protein Snacks or Quest Protein Chips) aren’t listed as permitted foods on most pre-op diets but protein drinks (and sometimes protein bars) are allowed? The nutrition facts on some of these protein snacks are only negligibly different from the protein drinks I’m drinking, and sometimes they even have less carbs and fat. So it doesn’t make sense to me why I can’t have them. They are sometimes just a bit higher in sodium, but I haven’t been advised to limit sodium.

I have been drinking about one 32 ounce Gatorade a day since 9/2 (Wednesday). That is the day I started my pre-op diet of 2 protein drinks or bars, and one meal a day. My surgery is on 9/16. I have been experiencing bloat and pressure in my lower abdomen and lots of gas. I started a post about it and some thought it may be the artificial sweetener in the shakes. I wasn't thinking that was it so cut out the gassy veggies, but still had problems. This morning I woke up with a very wet bed, and when I went to pee it was full of blood. I was really scared and couldn't understand what was going on. My caregiver had just asked me yesterday about drinking more water. I thought …

This isn't so much a question but I just mixed my Premier powder with 2 ice cubes, a round metal shaker ball, 7 oz of plain almond milk, and one scoop of premier protein powder in a shaker glass in that order. I shook it really well. I have never had good luck getting those to dissolve, but this blended excellent and tasted better than the pre-made drinks and cheaper!!!

I had surgery on 8/20 since then water doesn't taste good at all. My doctor says it's common and to try other brands to find one I might like. Also I have a bad taste in my mouth most of the time. Wasn't sure if anyone experiences this, and if so Is there a brand of water you like?

So I bought a variety of protein shakes to find one I like before surgery. So far I've only tried a premier protein chocolate shake. Omg it's awful. I mean I think I can maybe force myself to choke it down but it's awful! It tastes like what I would imagine tube feed tastes like! How am I going to do this lol. Anyone else out there who struggled to find a good one?

I’m having surgery in another week, and am on the 2 week pre-op high protein, low calorie Optifast 800 diet. So far it’s fine but the powdered soups are truly disgusting. I’ve been adding spices and seasonings, but curious if anyone has any good spice ideas to make these soups more palatable.

I’m currently on my second round of pre-op diet as I had a VSG in December 2019 and am having a revision to RNY in a few days but over the last year I’ve amassed quite a collection of protein powder and drinks. I’ve gone through 2 other 2lb tubs of the syntrax nectars and I’ve lost count of the protein shakes. But yeah, I may be hoarding protein powder and shakes. Anyone else do this? I need to know I’m not alone. ?

I am being revised Band to Bypass and have been dreading the pre-op diet. I was 3 days out when all elective surgeries got cancelled due to Covid. I had followed the diet well and was rescheduled. Date of the reschedule was coming up, was on the shakes and doing ok, only slipped once... again 3-4 days out was re-reschudled due to Covid. I am due to go in tomorrow. I really struggled this time, Firstly I missed the start day for the shakes (I work in government and between drought, fires and Covid I barely know what day it is), then I got in my head and have only successfully managed to do 4-5 days VLCD. The VLCD I was given was: Brekky: shake, Lun…

Hello, I had my pre-surgery labs done yesterday and today marks the two week countdown. My surgery was cancelled once and literally the next day, they rescheduled me for the same day. If anyone has their surgery date in or around July 16th, or starting their pre-op diet today, please msg me. My diet consists of 2 protein shakes, 64oz of water, 4oz with non starchy veggie and Sugar Free popsicles/Jello (if I need it). I hope to be more present in the near future on this site, since I need something to pass the time. But it is great reading about people preop and postop.

Hey everyone! I start my 2 week liquid diet on 6/24, so I'm trying to get my ducks in a row now. I know a lot of people use the ready to drink protein shakes, but I was wondering if anyone has any go-to protein shakes they make on their own with protein powder. I usually make almost a smoothie with protein powder, with yogurt and fruit, but my nut told me I won't be able to add the fruit on the liquid diet. The thought of just adding protein powder to almond milk grosses me out for some reason, so I figured I'd ask for some suggestions. TIA ?

I've only used Premiere Protein shakes and powder. It's beginning to taste odd to me. I'm looking for your fave alternate protein shakes. I have to do a liquid diet for several days before my pre-op colonoscopy, so I thought I'd try some new ones. I've heard of folks losing their taste for the Premiere shakes taste, Post-Surgery. I am wondering if there is a food database where I can input specific restrictions on certain macros to find something that will work with my diet. For instance, I am currently on the keto diet and I managed to hit my limit of carbs and and am way over my allowed fat for the day (damn you, IKEA meatballs and Oreo eggs ?), but I don't have enough protein! Normally I eat the same thing everyday because it's easier since I know everything is being met. However, on days like today, I am struggling to find something that isn't going to add more carbs and fat to what I've already managed to shove into my body. So, anyone know of a database where this information could be …

I’m 3 days into 14 day pre op diet and I’ve failed. Ate like he!! first 2 days and struggling today. So far I’ve had 1 shake, 1 protein drink, water, 3 slices of lunch ham and wonton soup minus the noodles. My question is.. how does the surgeon determine if your liver is too large? Do they examine you? I have 11 more days to go and I’m scared. I’ve already read through several posts regarding this subject. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Edited to add.. My original diet is no more than 6 shake daily, broth, sugar free jello and popsicles.

So this morning in church I told my husband IDK if I should participate in the Lord's Supper or not. We partake by drinking a small medicine cup maybe 1 ounce of grape juice and an oyster cracker to represent the blood and body of Christ! I said that grape juice has sugar in it! I finally just said you know I am going to do what I always do every week and take it because I know the Lord will take care of me. Somehow I ended up getting the biggest oyster cracker I have ever seen. I think it was honestly the size of a dime! I made my granddaughters laugh so hard on the way home because I told them that the Lord blessed me by having me pick up the biggest cracker in the …

My surgery is Thursday the 27th. I have been doing the 2 week pre-op diet. It is soooo hard. I have had protein shakes, daily, jello, cottage cheese ect. that is called for. Last week when I started I make this chicken santa fe soup all the time for my family( a family favorite)that consist of chicken breast, black beans, onion, taco seasoning, chicken broth and tomato juice! Since my diet consist of up to 2 cups of tomato juice daily and unlimited chicken broth I would eat the broth part of the soup that was more flavorful than just having tomato juice or chicken broth by itself. I have a very active job sometimes walking anywhere from 6-10 thousand steps a day, so this…

I made myself some eggs and sausage for dinner tonight. ? Out of impulse, I grabbed the sriracha sauce out of the fridge and poured some over my meal. Looked at the bottle to check the nutrition and saw that it was loaded with carbs (which I am trying to avoid while doing the keto diet) and was pretty sad about it. Does anyone here love sriracha? Have you found a low-carb alternative? If so, do you have a recommendation (bonus points if I can get it over in the EU)?

Mine is a clear liquid diet for three days + milk. I'm in my second day and honestly I'm so hungry. I was losing weight prior to surgery but with the amount of milk I'm drinking I've been stuck on the same weight these 3 days. I prefer to eat a tuna salad that actually fills me up at lunch, than a carton of milk that does nothing for my appetite. But I know I have to stick with doctors' orders. But it sucks.

Good morning/afternoon, I was wondering if anyone had pre-op diet counseling. Like, did your surgeon have you take classes on HOW to eat better? What foods are actually good and bad for you? And how to get onto a better food path? So far my monthly check-ins have only consisted of the nurse practitioner asking how I'm doing. There is really not much support. I mean I got as heavy as I am because I was never taught how to eat right. How am I supposed to know what foods are good for me?
