POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Mersh,

Hey, So I love reading all the various advice and stories from everyone. I'm almost 2 weeks post op and searching these forums for some guys. Seems like theres a bit of an overbalance in these forums. Anyways, looking to hear some stories of how to deal with head cravings, what to expect as a guy in my first couples months post op. (I know men and women loose differently)... Looking for some creative ways to hit that 80g protein mark early on... I'm downing 40g in an Isopure bottle daily and then more with some cream soup. I'm craving meat and can't wait to puree a ribeye or something... Just any men out there? Marsh

  2. I'm at day 15 post op and for the last 4-5 nights I wake up 2-3 times a night drenched in sweat. I get up change my pjs and the sheets and go back to bed only to repeat 2 more times about 2 hours later. Something else that is really odd. I have noticed that twice while i was asleep I ended up with a regular sized pillow on my chest (Once) and once on my stomach. the area under the pillow was very hot both internally and to the touch of the skin.. Almost burning up hot. Any ideas why the small pressure of a small pillow would cause the body to create such heat? PG

I had a few questions. I am one-week post op tomorrow! I had a really rough first couple days, I had a blood clot in my hand and was allergic to all the pain medications. But now I am doing pretty well, I am home after 5 days in the hospital and two nights at a friends house, I have pretty good mobility and have finally gotten a good nights sleep! I did have some questions if any Gastric bypassers can help. First of all, I would love some stage two liquid diet recipes, i got one more week and hate my protein shakes. I am having a little hard time getting my protein in. I know it's only week one, any suggestions? I think I might meet my goal today, I am trying ve…

It hurts my stomach too much to sleep on my side and my hips hurt when I'm on my back too long. I am a roller and sleeping in one position is not working. HW-292 • SW (6/29/17) 256.6 • CW 243.2

  6. I am whole liquids phase since yesterday, and have found myself able to eat 3 oz of cottage cheese at a time. My Dr. told me at discharge that my pouch was approximately 3 oz, so I guess this makes sense. However, I was told before the surgery that it is usually only 2 oz and my diet instructions indicate eating 2 oz of cottage cheese at a time and I started out with that but don't feel satiated without the extra ounce. Is it because this is still the liquids phase or am I overeating, or is this really the size of my pouch?

I can't tell what the pain that comes in waves are. It feels like, before my surgery starving pains, like if I didn't eat for the whole day and my stomach would growl and hurt and I'd be so hungry! This time, my stomach doesn't growl. I don't know if I should be worried of this pain or not. It brings a slight nausea feeling with it each time. HW - 230 SW - 215 CW- 200 GW - 130 Height 5'5"

I thought I show some pictures of what is a real aspect of post op. I have a picture of my blenders&sippy cups&measuring cups&scale. A picture of my water & gaterade&shaker bottles. A picture of my floor with me missing the waste can. I figure I wait every 30 minutes to get up and actually pick them up. Bending is not going well for me. Not well for me at all. I am actually living off of sugar free popsicles for my water intake. Water just tastes so bad to me and I havent started with the propel yet. So post op is moving but slowly & painfully iamready4this

So I was cleared to drink anything pourable, and decided to have some Broccoli & Cheddar soup, with no chunks. This was a big mistake. First I did eat a little more that I should (but not that much), but about 20 mins afterwards I was regretting it. Hoped I could walk it off, so walked for about 45 min. No relief. Figured I would try a nap, 1 1/2 hours later no better. This all started about 4pm yesterday. I had a horrible night, I would wake up about every 2 hours be bloated and nauseous. I didn't start to feel better until 2-3 this morning. Trying to figure we're I went wrong? Wrong type of food (bad choice)? Wrong Time, e.g. Too early from surger…

I have been out of the hospital for only 2 full days so I am not expecting perfection now, but I find it very painful to stay in a seated position for more than a couple of minutes, mainly at my large inscission. When will this change. I really would like to know for 15 min, an hour, and indefinitely. I know everyone is different so I am just asking for your results.

I ate 1.5 oz of fish this afternoon. It was my first bit of something soft and I still feel like it's sitting in my stomach five hours later. I'm guessing this is a sign I should go back to purée for a bit longer. Drinking fluid is uncomfortable for the first time since surgery. Now I'm not sure if I will get my protein in today. Oh well. Lesson learned. Next time I try soft food eat less and see how I tolerate it. HW-292 • SW (6/29/17) 256.6 • CW 240.8

I am 7 weeks post op and am having difficulty with vomiting after eating meat or fish. I will chew it for at least 60 seconds and even after a bite or two I will throw up everything and it tends to continue for a few hours. I grill my meat or broil it with no oils and I do not understand why I can't keep it down. I can't even do protein shakes as they make me sick so i'm living off of yogurt and i have oatmeal in the morning. My doctor put me on meds but it's making it worse. I'm not losing a ton of weight. 18. During my clear liquids phase, I so craved savory foods, especially a ricotta bake recipe I found online. The ricotta bake was for soft food phase, but I figured out a great alternative for my full liquid phase! 1 oz of tomato bisque soup ( try deli dept of King Soopers or Kroger) 1 oz cottage cheese Pour soup through mesh strainer to get any lumps out. Mixed strained soup with cottage cheese. Heat in microwave for 30 seconds. Enjoy the taste of lasagna! Please note that my Dr okayed cottage cheese during the full liquids phase, please make sure it is okay on yours as well. Enjoy!

I have been told that after so long I will be picking up something to wear underneath my clothes like Spanx or other support under garment. However, when I look at the prices, I am thinking it might be easier to just wear loose fitting clothes. I know I have to stabilize for 18 months before I can have any skin or tissue reduction. What do I do in the meantime? Can anyone give me a clue as to what the normal course of events will be?

Hi all! I am kind of frustrated and looking for feedback on my weight loss progress. I had my surgery June 16th and I am about one month post-op. I have been eating between 500-600 calories and working out 5-6 times a week since a week and a half after surgery. I have not been super diligent with water, however, on most days I meet my protein goal. I have only lost 16lbs since my surgery. This scares me because if it is moving slowly now, I am scared it will even get worse as time goes on. Any suggestions on changes I should make? Thank you!

  26. I had my sleeve done on June 15, 2017 and even though the first 2 weeks were ruff, I'm slowly doing much better. I find myself drinking over 64oz a water each day and only using the bathroom maybe once or twice. Is the common? Should I call the doctor? Is this serious?

Random question. I know that after surgery, pain is to be expected. One source of pain could be from gas in our smaller stomachs. I'm in my pre op liquid diet phase and finding that there is a lot of air when I swallow. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you!

  32. I'm 10 weeks in to my Gastric Bypass, after a failed Lapband. I have had a big problem finding food I can eat and getting the required protein. I was 379 lbs at my surgery and I'm already down to 301 lbs. Which is awesome for me, but protein shakes make me vomit almost right away after 6 weeks of nothing but the shakes.(2 weeks before surgery and 4 weeks after) I thought I could get protein from fish and shakes but can't seem to get them down, and stay down? I had RNY on 4/4/17. I lost 26.6 lbs in like 2 1/2 weeks. This week I started on soft foods and gained 5lbs. I am super nervous. I know I shouldn't pay attention to the scale so I weigh myself once a week. My question is, is this normal? I drink at least 1 premier a day, been doing at least 48 oz of water but more when I can fit it in. I eat yogurt for a morning snack and eat 1 meal. Am I doing something wrong? I guess I figured my weight would just instantly drop off weekly.

This week was my one year anniversary. It is amazing how much my life has changed in a year. For anyone on the fence about getting this surgery as I had been for years, I will say my only regret is that I did not do it sooner. I have lost over 100 pounds from my heaviest. For the last three months I have stabilized between 126 and 130 pounds. I workout regularly including a personal trainer, yoga, spinning and TRX. I have so much more energy and can do things I never would have thought I could do. People constantly refer to me as skinny which blows my mind. 41. Any nurses out there or someone who might know? When I'm eating and my sleeve is just about full, my nose starts to run. I'm not the only person to report this as I've seen many people on here comment about it. It seems so weird to me (although it is a helpful indicator I do confess). All the times I ate past satiety with my natural stomach I never ever experienced this. I'm just curious what the metaphysical explanation for this might be? Why does it happen? And why does it only happen after surgery?

So... personal question. Is there anyone else that has the Mirena and after surgery your menstrual cycle decided to go haywire? Had my cycle before surgery. Ended day of surgery. 2 days later it's back and has been non stop ever since. That was 3 weeks ago. If it were just spotting... I wouldn't mind too much. I was used to that. But this is full force. I know my estrogen is probably playing a part in it... but I am getting very tired of this. Lol. I had just started having normal monthly cycles 6 months ago with Mirena so I was very happy to be done with the daily bleeding. I don't think my body liked it too much for a couple years. Now I feel good enough for some "fun"…

I'm regularly weak and tired. Cleaning makes me very tired and I get dizzy and weak knees sometimes. I'm 3 weeks post op, and I can't drink protein shakes (my doctor knows). I'm trying to eat my protein but I don't really like my food choices and I've become resentful of my choice to have surgery ( I try to focus on the results). With that being said my desire to eat has decreased from lack of like and interest in my food options. I just feel myself getting really upset for making this choice. I don't know what to do....anyone felt the same way?
