POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

Well, that wasn't too bad. It's a bit like being holed up in a hotel with jet lag. Time is measured out in sips of water and, thankfully, Earl Grey tea. Sleep was fitful and unconvincing. As I can't concentrate quite well enough to read more than a page of a book at a time I go for walks around the ward. After a pain free surgery day I feel a little more shaky today. There's an ache in my shoulder (my body dealing with the gas that was pumped into my stomach cavity, it's like a strain and easily bearable. The closest thing I have to pain is the feeling of cramp or constriction when I try to take deep breaths to my diaphragm. It's like a band that makes you wince when …

  4. Hey everyone Sorry it's a tmi post but I'm 3 weeks post sleeve surgery and I've been having loud gurgling noises in my upper chest on the left side and loose bowel motions ? None can tell me what it is and I'm Worrying ! I thought it was lactose intolerance but I've been off dairy for a weeks now and I still have it ? Is this normal ? I'm taking a probiotic and some Reflux meds ? Just don't now what to do about it as it happens with a variety of food etc baked beans, ricotta bake, tuna, cordial ? I have no idea why and I am due to return to work in a week and don't want to have to run to the bathroom all the time ! Thanks

Hello I was sleeved in oct and am wondering if anyone is using any product for diet, fat burners, etc?

  7. On September 11, 2015 (less than 2 months from 2 years.) I opted to have the Bariatric sleeve done. Starting weight was 248, my height is 5'2 small build, diabetic among other things. So naturally I was morbidly obese... Fast forward to now, I have ONLY lost 75lbs..([emoji24]) I weigh in at 173 today, still in a unhealthy percentile for my build. I haven't lost more than the usually give or take +1 or -1 lb each week in over a YEAR!! ([emoji36]) I have tried RESTARTS. I go down a lb. but right back up a few days later. I'm not sure what's worst, me wasting my time on having surgery. Or having surgery and not losing near the amount of weight you want and/or need to lose…

My surgery is scheduled for 8/30. I've been on vacation for about 11 days and still have 7 to go. I figured a longer vacation with my family would be just what I need before I undergo this big change. I had my lap band removed after 12 years on 4/26 and had to heal for 3 months before having the conversion surgery. During my pre op appointment, my surgeon went over the risks and benefits of the surgery and there was on thing that he said that hit me in the head and now has my questioning if I'm making a mistake. Apparently band to sleeve conversion patients tend to have less overall weight loss, sometimes as low as 40-50% less, than us non-banders. On top of this, there'…

The pulmonologist just gave me the news that I have developed a sticky lung. My lungs are not expanding like they should and is causing breathing issues. It could take up to 14 weeks to resolve it. Basically, its from me having to have surgery twice which my lungs did not have a chance to expand after the initial surgery and so the second surgery made it worse. He wants me to know that lots of energy will go toward my healing and to include this lung condition in the mix too. He wants me to do my lung exercises 8-10 times every hour! God bless him for finding out the problem iamready4this

Have been experiencing breathing difficulties. My pulmonologist says that the anesthesia caused inflammation in my lungs which triggered my asthma. But since I had to be put under again after the initial bypass he wants to rule out any clots or if a lung collapsed. So im here to get the worse case scenario ruled out. iamready4this

Can someone explain to me why there is so much talk of Gas-X post op? Am I missing something here? I thought the gas pain was from the CO pumped into the abdominal cavity during surgery which has nothing to with gas in the GI tract. Is this a myth/misinformation that we tolerate on these boards or is there an actual basis for taking Gas-X post-operatively that I am clueless about? Can someone please explain this (and I mean the medical basis, not something that was read on the internet)

It started about 3 weeks out. Eating makes me nauseated, especially meat. Everything I've eaten thus far sits fine, but actually eating it is the problem. Nothing smells good, texture makes me gag, and thinking about eating makes me sick. The only thing that I can think about is bread and nuts. Is this normal? All the foods I would enjoy I can't because I get so nauseated. Like I said everything sits fine when it finally goes down but I really just force it down. I'm on nausea pills but nothing has changed. Anyone else dealt with this? (And no I haven't had bread [emoji23])

  25. Hey all, I had my sleeve done 5/26 and was out for a month. I recently returned to work was an ICU nurse. When I was cleared by my DR he told me that he does not want me drinking protein shakes and wants all my protein to come from food (doesn't want me drinking my calories). My concern is that I rarely ever get my 30 min uninterrupted break. I worked my first shift the other day and because it was the weekend, I could keep my drink out without being nagged about it. I took me a majority of the day to finish my large yeti cup which I did have a protein drink in (100 calories). I got out late and hadn't eaten all day so I ate some of my salad that I had brought…

I'm sure it's from the muscle being stitched after surgery but I'm wondering if anybody had this pain and if so how long after surgery did it go away. It goes away immediately after I sit up straight but I've noticed as I lose more weight it hurts more and gets a bit more intense. It never lasts and does feel like the muscle is being pulled but I just didn't think I'd be experiencing issues with the muscle this far out and maybe I thought wrong and that takes longer to heal. Last week (after not weighing myself for 2 weeks, I lost 1.1). I try not to weigh often but the scale calls me. I was weighing every day and now I do it once a week or every other week to keep some sanity and it does make me feel much better. I never measured myself at the beginning which I regret, but my clothes are looser. I just feel like I'm not losing the way most other people are. 35. I drink the vanilla or caramel Premier RTD protein drinks. I made some cold brew decaf concentrated coffee. Making cold brew extracts the acid from the coffee and tastes a little sweeter. I pour 4 oz. od the cold brew over ice and then pour in the 11 oz. of the vanilla or caramel Premier and it tastes just like a Starbucks iced latte! I started on regular food today so now am down to one protein drink a day, but doesn't even seem like a protein drink when I drink it this way. When I was on soft foods, most of the time I could not get in even 3 oz. at a time. Yesterday I had no trouble getting in 4 oz. per meal. No problems at all and had a perfect, normal bowel movement this morning. Now I am off my afternoon protein drink. i am looking forward to adding bread and rice but that is not until August 12th! It does get easier, so don't worry. Just eat what you can and don't push it if you can't.
