Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Lose100,

I am now able to walk 2 miles without passing out. It took me 38 minutes with the average speed of 3.3. My goal is to walk 2 miles in 30 minutes.

  2. Started by Regnu,

Does anyone have an oscillating vibration exercise machine. We bought one before the band and I am afraid to use it thinking it might cause the band to move. The machine shakes and vibrates your entire body which is supposed to be good for your bone density, circulation and toning.

  3. Does anybody else think the calories burned is too high ?!? I said I did 2 hrs of moving furniture they said I burned 1600 calories ? WTF ? I love it if it's true but it seems a little off to me

I am 18 days post op, and still can't bend over to put on my tennis shoes to exercise because of soreness where my port is. How long does this usually last? I'm so ready to start exercising!

I have been taking Water Aerobics and Zumba classes now the flabby skin is starting to appear. So me and my hubby signed up for a free personal trainer on the military base. Monday was day one core only a little sore but felt good. Tuesday was lower body only and bore was I in a whole lot of muscle pain. When I got in the car I thought I was going to vomit. Now here is the problem, my thighs and buttocks are so sore that I can barely sit, stand, or walk and I have been like this since Tuesday after the workout and today is Friday. I have not been back to see the PT because I am so sore. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? I expected to feel some soreness but not like th…

Hello all, I had heard that gardening was a good exercise, but I have never been horticulturally inclined, but my mother loves her flower beds and has been wanting to weed and plant. It is has been much too hot, but last night was comfortable enough that I decided to help her weed...I mean how hard could it be? My tiny 82 year old mother with moderate cognitive impairment worked me into the ground. After an hour, I was sure I was going to die; after 2 hours, I was sweating so hard, it was raining inside my glasses. This morning, all of my muscles from the neck down are threatening to file a class action lawsuit against my brain for reckless endangerment LOL. We fi…

So a friend and I have decided to start the couch to 5K program next week. I am sooooo nervous! I still have a long way to go to become physically fit and still almost 70 pounds to lose before I'm where I'm supposed to be. I'm really nervous I won't succeed at this. I'm excited to set a new goal, but definitely more nervous. Have any of you been through this program and succeeded? Were you physically fit when you began or were you a non runner like me? I have been going to the gym/walking for the past 3 weeks, 5X a week. That may have helped me a little. I just don't want to jump head first into this if it's not realistic. The program is supposed to be for people who are …

I LOVE MY SLEEVE! Tonight I completed a 5K in 39 minutes! This is a major accomplishment for me. Before being sleeved it hurt to walk across campus at my school. This evening I ran a good 2.5 miles without walking or stopping AND I was chatting. My pace wasn't anything to brag about, but I DID IT! I have lost 62 pounds and I have quite more to go, but my body is capable of so much more than I ever believed. I registered for two 5Ks and I plan on running the tinkerbell half marathon in January. I can't believe that these events are even possible. Thank you to those who have offered guidance and answered my questions recently. My sleeve and the VST community are aw…

I was just looking on Craigs list an ebay at exercise equipment for when Im ready to purchase something. I see a lot of Golds Gym ellipticals for sale and am wondering why....is it just because most people buy the equip and never use it? Or is that a bad brand? I thought I read on here where a couple people didnt like the Golds Gym brand. What do you guys think about getting used equipment? Is it better to just invest in something from a retail store? Just looking for some thoughts

  16. OK, its been 9 months since my surgery and I'm down 106 lbs. I joined a gym to do some cardio (treadmill and elliptical) and also signed on with a personal trainer (started about 2 months ago) working out with him 3 times a week (weights and core exercises). I've been doing cardio at the gym 2 X a week for about 30-40 mins. In the last 2 1/2 months, I have not dropped 1 single lb. UGH!. I bust my butt with the trainer and then do moderate cardio at the gym with NOTHING on the scale. I've been struggling getting in my food per day, because now that I'm more active, I'm even less hungry. My trainer would like for me to get in 1200 calories per day, but that is ver…

I went to my first Zumba class tonight and I was SO excited. Ive seen all the ads on TV for it and have heard how much a lot of people LOVE it. Well, I felt like a complete fool. 1st of all, going by myself kinda sucked. 2nd, I didnt realize quite how UN-coordinated I am, lol. I had absolutely NO idea what was going on 90% of the time. It totally kicked my ass though, which is good. I was going to do some extra cardio after the class, but had to go home because I was sooo whipped. For Zumba lovers, will this get better for me? How long did it take you to get all the steps down? Also, a kind of NSV, I was able to beat the helliptical yesterday by doing 10 minute…

  18. Hey everyone Have you heard of the book "New Rules of Lifting for Women"?? I want to add in weight training into my exercise routine. Right now i'm just doing cardio really, and a few machines (i don't know how to use them, so i've had to take a lot of time to learn each one). I heard about this program through MyFitnessPal and i'm curious to know if anyone here has experience with it? I'm a bit nervous since it apparently uses free weights, but on the other hand following a program would be easier than "winging" it right? Thanks!

  25. Hi Everyone, I'm looking at my surgery on the 3rd of July and have scheduled a backpack trip starting the 30 August - 8 weeks post. This trip is in montana glacier national park for 11 days - likely 10 to 12 miles per day - we are resupplied on the 6th day. I'm carrying a pack of likely around 35 pounds or so. Is this possible after surgery and in this short of a recoup period? How does one stay hydrated during the hiking?, and coordinated carbos (other food)? I would appreciate any feedback!! I started using MFP because I saw a lot of people on here using it, and I like it to see how my calories and fitness can be recorded, but other than that, I really HATE IT. The people on there are psycho! Every single time I venture to look at posts people put, they are SO negative. I've really only seen one negative post on this site since I've been on it, but that site is freakin crazy. Those people are SO judgmental about what other people post, how many calories their friends eat, who their friends can be. They get really nasty if someone says something they don't agree with. I've never seen anything like it. I only have my sister as a friend anyway, because it…

I'm not sure where to put this, but I figure exercise is the closest place to put it although a mental health forum might be a close second (if we had one). Last night, I watched the plump pole dancer, and I was horrified and in awe all at the same time. She was doing things and seemed so much more confident with her body than I have ever been with mine. Plus, she was athletic. I doubt I could climb that pole now let alone when I was at my heaviest. It just made me feel like I did in gym class and couldn't climb the rope. I have never had upper arm strength. But here she is, and she is big but strong and flexible. She did drop splits! I watched the whole thing imagini…

Has anyone been successful loosing weight without doing a lot of strenuous exercise? I was recently banded, but several weeks before being banded I hurt my leg and back. I plan on going to the pool after my incisions heal, but as far as a lot of walking or using exercise equipment, that is out for the time being.

  33. Started by waterchick,

So I hired a personal trainer once a week for the next six months to get me "into" my groove at the gym. Am I lazy for doing this? I just feel like I need a little extra push and accountability in the exercise department. The band pretty much takes care of the food department.

  36. Hey everyone Recently I've come across some very interesting and varying information about cardio vs weight training to weight loss and I was curious to know what you opinions are! Now, I haven't spent as much time as I'd like figuring out what is medically accurate... and even what I have read seems to contradict itself... that's why i'm asking for opinions! I've heard that - cardio is the best for weight loss because it gets your heart going and makes you sweat - cardio is only for what it stands for :cardiovascular. It only benefits your heart and won't affect your weight loss - cardio is not effective for weight loss because the amount of time you spend vers…

I don't want to lose anymore weight, I just want to keep fit and keep myself toned. I enjoy exercise and have missed doing it (who would have thunk it! Lol!) Was telling my brother about the above because he's a personal trainer and I wanted to NOT build bulk, I wanted to work out from home, but I also wanted a total body work-out without having to buy home gym equipment that would take up heaps of room. He suggested the TRX ssuspension trainer. Now I've seen it at use in his gym and I'm thinking of buying it but to be honest, I don't know much about it. Has anyone used it? Is it easy to learn to use on your own? Does it do what it claims and give you a total body w…

I ordered the part ($100!!!!!) and got it and went to change it and it looks like I'm going to have to take half the elliptical apart to fix it. My dh, though wonderful, is not at all handy nor helpful. I have been on SUCH a good kick! I'm up to 40 minutes- 10 min at level 1 and 30 minutes at level 2. SOOOOO- Of course I have other things to do- my Wii is broken and we're not replacing it until after the new one comes out around the holidays so I can't do my Wii Zumba. i do go to the Y for zumba 2-3 days a week, so that's covered. This is probably a question I should ask my doctor but I just wanted some input from others. At what point do you think it would be safe to lift weights? I'm not talking about machines or lifting to tone up, I mean stuff with free weights (squats, deadlifts, bench presses etc.). I used to lift a lot years back and enjoyed every bit of it and anxiously wanting to get back into it. No I don't expect to go all out and kill myself in the gym, gotta work up to that.
