Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by cleescruggs,

Ive been hearing from family that I should just stick to cardio because I still have 50 more lbs to go and I'm going to just build big muscles under the fat and then look hideous. Should I wait till I reach my goal to strength train and just stick to cardio. Been working out a month and am enjoying my routine.

  2. Started by Now&Later,

So I decided to go to Tijuania, Mexico for my sleeve. BCBS was taking forever to approve me so I had decided to go through a company called Ready 4 a Change. It was less than $4500 and the process from start to finish took about a week. We are staying at the nicest hotel, the Marriotj and the hospital was clean and quaint itself. But now is where my worry sets in at. I have questions about dieting, exercising and just tons of other questions. Like when can I start working out and what can I do to expedite my weight loss?

Yesterday morning, I pulled into a parking garage and purposely drove to an upper level so i would have to climb stairs to get to my car! That has NEVER happened before. I was always one to find the shortest & flattest route!

  7. Started by gettinghealthymama,

I was banded in April and lot 55 lbs. I weighed myself for my this morning and didn't lose anything from last weeks weigh in. I was feeling upset but instead of eating whatever I could get my hands on I went to the gym. I completed an entire ActivTrax workout for the first time. Entire body workout with weights and 40 mins cardo. I struggled some but I did it and feeling pretty darn good!!!

  8. Started by lalaj,

Has anyone tried it and saw results especially with the strength training portion? I have a free pass and I want to try it out. Just wondering if the banded community has had any experience with it. Thanks in advance Lala

It's easy to overlook things that happen in slow motion, but the other day when someone complimented my ability to resist overindulging, it hit me: I've been building discipline! Okay, so the brain may not technically be a muscle, but you can strengthen it by exercising it. Just as pushups get easier the more I do them, saying no to junk food, Desserts, and even extra helpings of healthy food gets a little bit easier every time. I used to eat whole pizzas in one sitting (and breadsticks! and pasta!) multiple times a week. It felt like a compulsion. I still have my pizza nights, but now it's because I want to, not because I can't resist. Just some "food for thought".…

I went to my first exercise class yesterday and chose yoga. I have been exercising for almost 2 months on the treadmill and with weights. However, today after that yoga class yesterday morning, I am sooooo sore. My back, arms, shoulders, arm, and even lower abs are really sore! The weights have nothing on this! I will definitely be going again! Though probably not today.....

  13. Started by ouroborous,

So, my trainer's got me doing barbell squats (4x12 reps) as the start of my legs routine. It's brutal (all quads/hams, with one calf exercise thrown in for good measure), but effective. The only thing I'm not sure of is form -- specifically, foot placement. I know that I'm supposed to place my feet a "little more than shoulder width apart), but doing that seems to put a lot of strain on my knees as I lift the bar. Specifically, as I lift, my knees want to separate, and if my feet aren't placed right, that seems to put a lot of torque/twisting motion on my hips and knees. Fortunately, I'm not doing much weight on the bar yet, so I haven't injured myself. But I'd real…

I would love to do some ab workouts but I am so uncomfortable lying on the ground. It's like a stinging sensation wherever there is a bony prominence, even though it layered with fat. Any suggestions to make it more comfortable or other exercises I can do for an ab workout?

  16. Started by ouroborous,

I've started working on my own private weight/fitness tracking site. http://gym-bunny.herokuapp.com/weights It's still early days -- if you click on the "weights" item, you can see that my weight timeline is hard-coded into the app (well, it's in the database). What I really want to do is add workout information, sets, reps, and so on, and get the same charting capabilities that I have for weight. What's nice is that I built the weight graph as a reusable component, so as soon as I figure out the data schema for the exercise stuff, it should be as simple as adding another page to the app to display it. Yes, I know that a lot of this functionality is replicated els…

I'm sad to say that after being sedentary for so many years, I'm at a bit if a loss! Keep in mind we have an almost-3 year old that we'd like to include in our activities. If you are a Hubby who refuses to walk with your wife in the evening because you have to walk on the treadmil so you will know exactly how far/how fast you walked. Well, when you are bit on the toe by a hybrid poisonous spider of herebefore unidenified species brought to your town in the coffin of a guy killed by a bite from said hitchiking spider - then, well, you were warned, weren't you?!

Used to own one of these many years ago and lost 40 lbs using it everyday when I wasn't even that big at the time. Since now I've had surgery, I really wanted to get one again and was so excited to start using it today; however, I could only last about 25 minutes because of the pain it was causing me to have in my ankles and the burning sensation on the bottoms of my feet. I'm not sure if this is because I am heavier now but I don't really remember this being a huge problem before. Does anyone else use the gazelle and/or have any advice for pain? I was thinking of getting some ace bandage and using it to help support my ankles, do you think that would work? I think I…

2nd week of walking 1 lap, but today I could barely lift my legs up. They weren't sore, just heavy. I've had both knees replaced and lots or arthritis. Walking is good for you, but I need something else for days like today. I was a couch potato! But am really trying to exercise. Hubby walks 2 miles every morning, but I can't walk that fast. Any ideas?

Well I recently joined a gym and today I went to have my fitness assessment. I was doing great and here comes the part where I have to do a step test for 3 mins. The trainer was telling me not to stop and go faster well before I knew it I hit the floor and heard my knee pop. I only had 20 seconds left I was so embarrassed if I wasn't in pain I would of ran out. The trainer was very sweet about the whole thing but I am discouraged. I was banded April 4, 2012 and I know the journey has just begun but I can't imagine the workout part getting easier : (

Its my new favorite thing!!! I'll admit I totally DESPISE exercise. I do. Sorry but I don't workout. Ive lost 110 lbs with little exercise. I'm sure I will pay for it with loose skin, but.... Anyway my surgeon really wanted me to try swimming. But for me putting on bathing suit was out of the question. But I put my big girl panties on and sucked it up and got a bathing suit and didn't care. Now I go to the pool a few times a week and I'm loving it!!!! I stay for hours and I really work my legs and arms. So easy on the joints. Love it.

  31. I am doing cardio 5-6 days a week and strength traing on the weight machines at a local gym. MFP will let me add the exercise, sets, repetitions and weights lifted, but does not show calories burned. How can I add this into my MFP?

I am due to have the surgery the end of September or beginning of October. I know this is the right choice and that it is something I need to do for me and my kids. However, I know if I exercise and watch what I eat I could loose the weight on my own. Then I tell myself HELLO it has yet to work cuz you don't do it. I hate to exercise and dont have energy to do it. I am worried that this wont work for me.

  34. Started by DivaK,

I had surgery on July 2nd and I am going to the gym and walking on the treadmill for an hour at 3.5 speed with no incline. This is really fast for me...I am only 5*1 I am trying to see what is a reasonable goal to set for walking on the treadmill. I have to wait six weeks before I can do any light weights. Thanks!

Life in the other. I can be myself, by myself and enjoy myself. Even if I'm sore or in a little pain afterwards, that's ok. Peace never hurt so good Just sharing my new found peace... Thurs , I worked out and then Fri I think I was asleep by 6PM and a nap on Sat. And actually I'm still sore today. My energy level PLUMMETED the day after workout. I assume I should make sure I'm getting all my vitamins in / up my water / increase my calorie & protien intake. Any other suggestions. I am a single mom to a 7yr old. Can't afford to have …

  39. I started a workout program with a trainer at the gym and was surprised at how much I was able to do. Unfortunately, my body was not ready and I have developed bicep and rotator cuff tendinitis from over use (who knew?). Now I am doing PT and they want me to take Ibuprofen which is on the no-no list. Anyone have any recommendations on anti-inflammatory pain killers? I have been trying to tough it out for a few weeks, but it is excrutiating especially when trying to sleep. Not to mention now I am totally depressed about that and want to eat everything! Good thing it is not possible to do that.

I'm looking for some exercises I can do at home. I plan to go and get some dumbbells. I am a stay at home so Im looking for exercises or web sites that I can check out at home.

I am so mad right now. I work out atleast 3 hours a day once in the evenings and once in the morning. I am trying my best to eat when I should I can't get over 800 calories in, I am feeling more and more exhausted each day.......and I AM AT A STAND STILL! My doc says more protein, my nutritionist says more calories, and my trainer says more carbs so I can have more energy. I need to hear from someone who has had the surgery because none of these people have. What do I need to do?

Here's how it works: 100 jumping jacks 90 crunches 80 squats 70 leg lifts 60 jumping jacks 50 crunches 40 squats 30 leg lifts 20 jumping jacks 10 minute run Even if in the beginning you can't do all of that, try cutting each in half and working your way up.
