I have not been sleeved yet, but I want to get into a routine that I can stick with before and after surgery. My problem is I just can't get into a groove. My question is, when is a better time to exercise, when I wake up or shortly after, or before bed? I don't want to be tired before work, but I'm afraid if I workout before bed I won't be able to wind down. Any advice or personal experience would be very welcome!

I had surgery on September 6th, so I am 17 days post-op. I am still a little sore, but overall, feeling much better than a week ago! I had my staples out six days ago. I have been cleared to walk which I have been doing, but told to wait another week and a half to go to the gym. My dilemma is this: It is a beautiful day outside, and I am contemplating going kayaking with my husband. I'd like some feedback on whether anyone has done this a few weeks post op, and whether you think it is safe to do? I know, I know, I could call my surgeon's office and ask, but I figured I could grab some quick feedback here first! Thanks for your thoughts and opinions! I appreciat…

Well, I did it!!! I finished my first triathlon in 2:15:09. I was super slow on the bike and run but I didn't come in last!!! I loved the ocean swim and I was 20/57 in my wave!!! I'm already signed up for another one in September and hope that I can drop a little more weight by then. My weight loss has slowed to about 4-5 pounds a month so it probably won't be until next year when I'm able to really improve my times considering I won't be carrying the extra weight. I have a question for those of you that have done/are doing triathlons: my back aches on the bike and run after some distance and I'm wondering if that is weight related or just core weakness???

As anyone done a Ragnar relay race? I'm looking for ideas for foods to bring and eat during the race. (it's a 24 hour relay race where you dont really have an opportunity to eat a proper meal or sleep!) Other people on my team are bringing bagels and other things that won't work for me.

Hi Everyone! I have signed up for my first 5K race and will run it this Sunday here in Texas! It's the Plano Balloon Festival 5K. (http://www.planoballoonfest.org/event-information/festival-runs) I have set a couple of goals for this race and since it's my first, Winning it is not one of them. What I am wanting to do is to actually run the race and not have to stop and walk. The other goal is to finish it in a time of under 35 minutes. I have been following the C25K training app (free one in the Apple app store) and am on week 5 day 3 today. I have been working out six days a week, doing cardio all six days (3 days of running/jogging on the road and 3 days of run…

If you told me that I'd be rinding my bicycle for 30 mile trips a few times a week. I'd especially scoff at you if you would tell me that one day I would take a 55 mile ride like I did last Saturday. I could not beleive it as the miles just racked up further and further as I headed to a trail system about 3 towns south of us, the GPS trip computer I use registered 54.94 miles when I hobbled off the bike in the driveway. 2 years ago I would be wheezing and panting at a trip around the block! If you're still undecided about a VSG I can tell you it has DRAMATICALLY changed my life. I am a totally different person than I was 2 years ago and MUCH more physically fit. I…

So today was the first day I've been to a gym in a loooong time - I know, hurrah! I actualy wasn't overly comfortable with the environment (a lot of people running on treadmills while I sat there peddling away on my bike) and to be quite honest, as a student without a car it's almost too much of a pain to try and figure out how I'm going to get there and back every time I want to go. So I thought of things I could do in my own house and thought hey, why not try a work out dvd? Two questions: 1. Does anyone have a favorite or that they found not particularly difficult that a beginner should try? I've looked up tons and I've watched youtube reviews on many of them...…

All, This has been a great journey and I am terrible greatful for where I am at. I am finding that with the sudden weight loss, though I exercise roughly 3 times a week (cardio mostly), I am very poorly defined. I am 45 yo and not looking to enter any contests however I am looking for some definition between the bottom of my tooshy and the back of my knees as well as toning in other areas. Are there any cost effective, easy resources to help those of us who are challenged with knowing what to do weights to learn how to set goals and accomplish them in the weight room. IE like the couch to 5k website but for weight lifting?? Thanks, WCM

Hey everyone...I suppose, I have a stupid question...but I'm going to ask it anyway. So last Thursday I went in for my 1 month post-op visit. The DR cleared me to exercise. Since then I've been at the gym everyday doing 1hr cardio (couch to 5K and either elliptical or stair master) I alternate weights every other day. Since I started the gym I have not lost weight. I was losing every week up until this week. I actually gained a lb. :-( I'm kinda bummed and worried that I'm going to fail. I called the DR but they didn't return my call. I guess I just want to know if this is normal, or if anyone has experienced this and if I should not go to the gym until I get to goal? …

I've been doing a lot of reading about circuit training and cross fit workouts lately. I really wanted to join a cross fit center but it was $100 for 2 classes per week. So I just came up with my own circuit I did at home. I started with 10 hard minutes on the elliptical. Basically sprinting by the end on 10/10 resistance and incline. Then.... 10 modified pull ups (cause I can't do real ones) 10 mountain climbers 5 barbell dead lifts with 135 pounds 10 crunches 10 pullovers with 35 pounds 10 dumbell curls 20 pounds Then run 200 yards Do that circuit 3 times with no rest. It took me 21 minutes, I should be able to do it quicker next time now that I …

Where do you find a bike for an overweight person? When I get on my daugter's bike, standard Wally world bike, the tires go flat. Is it just that I need bigger tires on a bike, or are there bikes specifically for us? I'm 5'7", 250lbs. Thanks!

Ugggh. I've made up my mind that I'm going to get 'sleeved'. I'm at the very beginning though. Attended the intro class and turned in a lot of paperwork and now I'm just waiting to hear back. I figure it'll happen in January, or so. Well, I don't want to just sit here getting fatter! I' really discouraged though. A 20 minute walk leaves me in pain and barely able to walk the next day. It's very painful and I feel defeated. Did anyone else out there have plantar fasciitis that went away as you lost weight, post op? Any tips to help in the meantime? Thanks.

Has anyone heard about the supplement. I picked some up from GNC yesterday, but am hesitating to even open the package after reading reviews on Amazon and GNC site. Is it dangerous for sleevers specifically? The reason I got it was two fold: looking for something to boost metabolism and GNC sort of pushed it on me describing it as being good for boosting metabolism. It is a stimulant and there are multiple warnings on it concerning not to go over a certain daily amount and to find your tolerance before increasing.

Hey all a barrel racing friend of mine has offered to start giving me riding lessons on the cheap in exchange for work around the stables. I know nothing about horse riding at all sounds like it could be fun and according to my fitness thingy it'll burn around 650 calories and hour (not counting bailing stalls haha). Seems like a win win situation and a new thing to add to my workout repetoire. Thoughts/opinion/advice?

Yesterday evening I went for my walk and I decided to add some arm movements and also added some left to right hip (waist) movement. All day today I have had the worst pain ever on the area with the largest incision. ( sleeved 8/29) I had to take my lortab tonight. Extra strenghth tylenol did not help. I didn't have this much pain after I came home from hospital. ..I didn't even need pain meds after surgery. I think I aggravated the stitches and the muscles.

I asked my surgeon to clarify the post-op exercise guidelines and got a pretty detailed list, so I thought I'd share it for everyone's benefit, as some of the stuff was surprising to me. I used to be quite active before the surgery, so this is kind of depressing to me, I was really itching to start weightlifting and running again! Bowling is kind of random, haha.

My surgeon requires 3 months of supervised diet before surgery. It's not the insurance requirement but his requirement. He said programs like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig count. I haven't done that but I do have about a month and a half of Myfitnesspal from earlier this year. It's detailed with everything I ate and the nutrition information and all my workouts. It has my weight info too. I wonder if he would accept that as part of my 3 months and shorten my diet that I'm on now so I can have surgery sooner. Did anyone else use myfitnesspal for their proof of diet?

My doctor didn't clear me for exercise for 8 weeks (other than walking). I have done Chalean Extreme in the past. It is mostly just for building lean muscle. I don't want to lose too much muscle and am trying to prevent a pancake butt, if possible, so I thought I would pull it out yesterday and try it. I did it and just skipped any parts that involved my core since it is still healing and used very light weights. I felt fine and it felt good to do it, but I was wondering if anyone knew if this was acceptable? I plan on not doing the cardio or the core and just doing the strength training. I am very cautious and do not want to do anything to hurt my sleeve.

It was a year on 8/26/12 that i had my LBS, i have already lost 70 lbs, but would like to lose about 50 more and tone up all of my fat. I have basically not exercised at all. So i decided i would get serious about getting into shape and losing the rest of the weight. I joined Title Boxing Club on tuesday. I love it!!! They have boxing and kickboxing classes, each class is 60 minutes long and very intense. They say that you can burn 1000 calories an hour. I have been to 2 boxing classes this week, they do a mixture of boxing, cardio and abs exercising. I know i am not burning the 1000 calories yet because half the stuff i cannot do, but i try. My questions is how often do …

Hi all, I was sleeved on June 14th. Prior to surgery riding had become a chore & I couldn't do much under saddle! And trying to find a dressage saddle to fit ALL my curves was quite a challenge. I'm happy to report I rode my pony for the 2nd time ever & first time post op & it was fabulous!!! I had so much fun & did not get out of breath at all!! I can't wait to see how I feel when I get closer to my goal...I've decided a new saddle will be my present to myself. Very excited. I'll post pics when I'm on my laptop. I'd love to connect w/any vsg horseback riders out there & hear your stories!

Well, except for allergies. Yesterday I skipped working out because my allergies were killing me. So today I was feeling guilty because I'm still not feeling great, but better than yesterday. I managed to make it all the way until 8pm before I decided I need to work out somehow, but without leaving the house. I just went old fashioned with 6 sets of body weight squats: 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5. http://www.acefitness.org/exerciselibrary/135/bodyweight-squat. You might be surprised at how out of breath you will get doing just simple exercises with body weight. I definitely was. I have this rule that helps me feel guilty, but not too guilty, while keeping me on track: it …

I'm going to be cleared to start exercising this week, so I'm wondering what to start with. I had just started exercising after 3 years prior to surgery, so it's not like I'm returning to a heavy routine. My goal is to "work my tool" to it's full advantage. So...how do I do that?

Hi! I am being banded tomorrow and a friend wants me to join her in the Crossfit Program in Tucson. I was considering a personal trainer after I am cleared for strenuous excercise but she has been doing this program for almost 2 years and swears by it. As a lifelong couch potato, I am worried that I will drop dead of a heart attack if it is too much for me but I really need a push. It took a doctor telling me I had to eat certain foods in order to get my surgery for me to actually pay attention to what I eat and to eat healthy. I need that hounding of an actual excercise program to be held accountable. Anyone have any experience with this program?

So I changed my avatar to my pic before I headed out in the rain to do the race! 3 months ago I never would have attempted a 5k and now I can't wait for my next one. Have no doubts I love my sleeve and my new life! We can do this!
