Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by goldenraisin214,

Good morning all, Just wanted to share an exercise/fitness NSV. I ran the Hot chocolate 5K this past Sunday in Chicago, and my time was 43:48. Last year, pre-VSG, I did a 5K (walked pretty much the entire thing) and came in at 53:55. This time I was able to do a substantial amount of running/jogging, and shaving 10 minutes off my time felt awesome! Yay! I guess next time I need to shoot for under 40 minutes

Anyone know a good wii fit workout DVD? I need one a beginner can do but allows me to grow with it. Kinda want to make use of my wii fit board. Lol

I'm not cleared by my surgeon to start working out yet, but just curious, how quickly did you see results with exercise mixed in? I get my first full in 2 weeks and then can start working out! I'm sooooo excited!

  4. Started by my new self,

Started Zumba today. I have been starving ever since. I had tuna with a slice of cheese for breakfast, then ground chicken with veggies for lunch, 2 protein shakes as snacks and a few crackers. It is only 5pm and I have had more to eat today than any other day.

  5. Started by ljperez,

I've been walking but haven't been back to the gym since surgery 9/5. Well I made it and it was tough almost 9 weeks without working out. It made me realize I can't stop ever again. I worked so hard before to reach fitness goals and now I'm so out of shape it hurts. Let's see how I feel tomorrow. hopefully not to bad.

  6. Started by BKMama,

Hey guys! Ok I need a little guidance with this. I am doing the gym 3-4 days a week and I love it so far. 2 days are cardio and 2 are strength...each session 60 minutes. Today during my strength training I got dizzy at around minute 35 or so and I just struggled overall to get through the class. I know it's likely I had too much time between a meal/snack and the class but I struggle on what to have before working out that isn't too heavy (makes me nauseous especially dairy) but will help me get through the workout. I make sure to have lean Protein or a shake immediately after the session for recovery. I'm drinking at least 32 oz of Water while exercising too...…

  7. I discovered this in a related article on diet vs exercise for weight loss results. http://www.pbrc.edu/...loss-predictor/ Though it doesn't provide quite the extreme for caloric restriction that we undergo, it DOES show how regular exercise can really impact the results. I entered my gender, age, height, weight, and caloric reduction. I had to play around with this for a few minutes to see how it worked and to make connections between how it worked and corollaries to the unique nature of the sleeve and our general nutritional plan. If I have a caloric deficit of 1,000 calories a day (It would take 2,665 calories a day to maintain my current weight of 187), then i…

Where can I find a good beginners weight routine/workout? I am 3 months post op and have not begun a weight regimen yet but I would like to. It's been several years since I have done any type of weight workouts! I have done a good job with weight loss but I do feel like I'm losing some strength. Any help help would be appreciated!!

I just started running c25k and am loving it. But it's been 10 years since I really ran regularly and that was in a warmer climate. So...I live inPA and will now be running in 20-45 degrees for the next few months. Here goes... How do you keep your nose from running nonstop or do you just bring tissues? What is the best way to keep your face from getting windburn or chapped. I really don't want to wear a mask or neck gaiter. What is the best to eat/ drink the night before and morning of a big run bc the old days of eating lots of Pasta are gone! Any other good tips? Thanks! Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk

My fitbit likes to take off my calories earned from my fitness pal. When I add in that I did my elliptical trainer or most any other exercise my fitbit will add the same calories burned as a subtraction to my fitness pal and i dont know why 0.o . This is driving me nuts and I can't make it stop . Anyone have a clue ? I do about 10k steps a day that's with working out. I want to keep track of my steps on fitbit but I want to keep track of calories burned through my fitness pal.

  24. I got sleeved on 5/30/12 and bought a lovely scale (Beuer BF66) to track my weight-loss, bone density, water, etc., but it was recently damaged (thanks to our upstairs neighbors flooding our apartment) and needs to be replaced. Even though I loved it, Bed Bath & Beyond doesn't carry it anymore for a quick buy, so now I'm looking into other scales that measure everything. I still have a high BMI of 32, so it can't be for the next Iron Man or anything. I'm looking into the Omron HBF514, Seca 804 and browsing into Tanita scales. Any insight would be helpful! Thanks!

  25. Hi All its 3 1/2 years since I have been banded and 1 year since my body lift. I need some help to see if I am just fooling myself and eating too much or If I really OK and should accept myself where I am. Its really frustrating. My top weight was 330 335 in High School. Today I'm 240. The lowest I was was 233 a few months after my body lift when I was recovering. I have been around around this 240 Mark now for a few years! And don't know what I can do to get to my goal which is moving up now to from 225 to 230! I am 6 Ft and a big guy. I have been heavy all my life, my dad and mom were big. So the it's in the Family. I started taking water aerobics classes this week at the Y. I was really surprised. It was a great workout! The class is an hour long and we use these water weights that provide a lot of resistance! I had always brushed off water aerobics as too simple, but it was a fantastic workout! My YMCA location even offers aqua zumba! Has anyone else tried water aerobics?

Who has one, and would you recommend it? I have an elliptical, but it hasn't seen much use. I have been using a treadmill at the gym, and have really enjoyed it. Planning on selling the elliptical and buying a treadmill (not enough room for both). I would like to start a C25K program soon...and am looking for a good lasting treadmill for a beginner runner.

  28. I was pretty familiar with interval training from decades ago, but HIIT is an intense form of interval training. I read up on a few different websites and decided to just give it a try. My main take away was don't overdo it as you can hurt yourself. I thought I was starting out easy, but I am actually pretty tired this morning. So I was on the elliptical and did a 5 minute warmup followed by 5 repeats of 15 seconds full out exertion with 45 seconds of recovery. I then did about 5 minutes of steady state cardio because I was feeling surprisingly sweaty and "exerted" by those 5 repetitions (I really went as hard as I could so pushed myself very hard). I followed th…

So we're riding the hurricane out at the in-laws' house and it looks like I'm not going to be able to go to the gym tomorrow or Tuesday. I brought some workout DVDs with me, but I forgot the in-laws don't have a DVD player. Anyway, sometimes when I'm channel surfing early in the morning I see programming for things like zumba and other workouts. Are these actually workouts on TV or just infomercials for exercise tapes? Also, any good ideas on how to work out at home? I have no fitness equipment with me at all.

I am wondering what the current "best practices" are for strength training. My goal is fitness, toning, strength, injury prevention (best way to protect joints is strong muscles) and to build enough muscle to help me maintain weight loss. Time efficiency is paramount - shortest workout with results. In the old days, we used to always do 3 sets, reps of 8-12 per set for each exercise. I am reading "Weight Training for Dummies" and they seem to be recommending doing 1 set per excercise for someone in my situation. Perhaps doing multiple exercises for a specific muscle, but only one set of 8-12 reps for that particular exercise. Any thoughts? In the past, I really…

Hi all. I have lost 54 lbs since my surgery on August 14th. I feel I am at a good point now to move from walking to jogging. But I need help. The last time I jogged was in 1999 in gym class. But I decided to jog this past Monday. I did much better than I thought I would. Only thing is, the next day I felt my whole body ache and my shins felt like they had been jackhammered. I read online that it was normal for beginner joggers to feel sore the first few weeks. But I was so sore I felt it when I walked. I really want to start jogging. I think it will greatly help me. But do I jog through the pain? Do I wait until I don't hurt then jog again? Any tips or tricks? A…

That's how the old saying goes. I've decided to change this up and put my feet where others money is... I signed up for a Make-A-Wish 5K run fundraiser and put it out there that for each $50 donated above $100, I'd run an additional 5K. One week into the donation period and my family decided to punish me! I'm now running a marathon with more than $500 in donations. Signed up to run the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, CA the day after the Make-A-Wish 5K here in Las Vegas. I've take the last month off after doing the Ironman 70.3 World Championships and a half marathon the following week so it's time to get my butt in gear and back on road. This should be int…

  39. So how does this work if you do cardio and weight training separately? Does doing cardio count as letting the muscles recover or does it have to be a true day of rest (no exercise)? I'm starting a new regimen that will look like this: Monday - BodyPump (full body weight training) Wednesday - Either BodyCombat (cardio kickboxing) or Water aerobics Thursday - Zumba Saturday - Body Pump (full body weight training) Sunday - 1/2 hour core class and Zumba This would be an ideal week, so I may not make it to all of these every single week. But I'm just wondering if I'm not giving my muscles enough time to recover from the weight training. It's Monday and I'm still s…

I have a recumbent exercise bike. I have been doing well on it but have hit a problem. I am having chafing and skin problems in my groin area ( where my legs meet my torso). It isn't heat rash. I thought it might be due to wearing loose clothing. I am trying to find biking shorts that fit. I have some on order and they are due soon. I have tried powder and washing and changing immediately after working out. Has anyone else had this problem? It is getting so that it is uncomfortable even if I am not riding my bike. Any ideas would be welcome. Due to health issues, riding my bike is my best exercise option. I wouldn't be able to do as much if I tried walking. Thanks!
