I am pre-op and recently started walking again. I've been doing 1.7 miles in about 45 minutes (slow pace). Today I did 2.0 miles in 50 minutes and now my legs and feet are killing me! Is it simply because I walked a little bit faster?

I just finished reading the book "Born to Run". It really made me want to go run an ultramarathon. It also makes me want to order myself some of those minimalist running shoes. I'm really determined to be able to run injury free.

I was banded June 12. I started at 255 and I am currently 189. I was losing 2-4 per week and eating 900 (800-1000) calories a day. I stayed within my allowance 98% of the time. Majority I am 920. I started working out. I do 30 cardio and weights 5 days a week. I have only lost 2 in the past 3 weeks. Very frustrating. Any thoughts if I should increase my calories to 1000-1200? I do focus on protein and have 70-90 a day.

I was banded 11/7/12. Before I was banded, I ask my doctor if I could still barrel race after I healed, even took a picture of me doing this. He said absolutely sure, no physical limitations. To anyone not familiar with barrel racing, it's running a horse wide open, quickly turning 3 barrels, all in the fastest time you can. It does consist of hard bouncing in the saddle. After reading on this forum about band slippage, I'm just a little concerned. I'm going to wait at least 8 weeks post op before I return to the saddle. He said 3 weeks but I really don't think he understood the physical demands involved in this sport. What do ya'll post banders think? Any help a…

I was sleeved 10/11/12 and started walking the week after surgery. Slowly, leisurely around the block once. After about 2 weeks I picked up the pace and added a little more to the length. Now 4 weeks out I am starting 2 times around the block at a normal pace (not fast and sometimes stopping for the dog LOL) Today it was raining and I wanted to make sure I got in some exercise so I decided I would walk the stairs. I read an article that at my weight 248 I would burn 10 calories per minute. I said I would do 10 minutes but could only do 5 minutes. Afterwards my heart rate was super high (didn't time it) and was coughing quite a bit. When I had my pulmonology ap…

I left the gym on cloud 9 yesterday! So I've been going a lil over a week now and when I started I thought I was going to die. I was sweaty, I was outta breath, my body hurt, I was soooo thirsty after, I just felt like poo. But I didn't stop kept an internal conversation that surgery was a tool and I need to work harder than it. Every "thing" kicked my butt no matter what order. BUT last night I stayed on the elliptical the entire workout I maintained the right heart rate. I didn't kill myself and I feel awesome. I did the body stuff too and noticed it didn't kill so my trainer says to start mixing it up more and push. I've always given up. I have never finished a machi…

I am not sure if I am tired or if it is lack of motivation or if I am letting life get in the way. I am 10 months out...and it feels like my body is fighting me to exercise. I have no energy, no desire....and have no clue where it went. I use to sweat and bust my butt now it is like I barely can do 30 minutes. Please tell me this is a phase.... I am on B12, so I am getting that. How do I get my motivation back? Where did it go? I still have 40lbs to go......

About two years ago I decided to change my way of eating. Eating "clean" is how it's been described. Fresh fruits and vegetables, wholegrain, complex carbs, low fat Proteins, zero refined sugar, etc., etc. Basically prepackaged foods/meals were a no go. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store, and be mindful of how your food is cooked/prepared. In addition to eating healthier I worked out for 2-3 hours 5-6 days a week. Cardio for 60-90 minutes and strength training for about a hour. In eight months I lost 25 lbs. Well, good... right? I looked better. I felt better. Now fast forward to today... two weeks shy of two months post-op. Still "eating clean", finally up 90 min…

I like to do some king of workout every day because it really effects how I feel. Recently I have switched to using my elliptical every day in addition to a barbell workout. Now do not think I am working out 4 hours a day because of this thread subject. I'm not. My workout is about an hour. Anyways, I was doing my 45 minute interval program on the elliptical today and changed my approach to be as relaxed as possible, remain flat footed and focus on my core area. It felt really great. I did not get any fatigue even though I was really pushing myself. In fact it felt like I was high on a drug ( no, I do not abuse drugs; just remembering surgery recovery when taking oxy). Th…

So I have recently been looking into pedometers to help with my excercise tracking. For a while I was looking at the Fitbit and just saw today that they are coming out with a new model that is Water resistant. I am contemplating buying it but have yet to use one. The main concern I have is the accuracy. I don't always wear pants that have pockets or loops and saw that it can be worn at the center of the bra; which I think would be more comfortable since I put stuff in my bra all the time. Has anyone used one clipped on the bra and how well does it work?

Three years ago I went on a cruise and did a cycling tour at one of the ports. The guide was extremely rude about having a "special" bike for me because of my weight. Today I am 63kg (140lb) down in weight and tonight I ordered my first road bike, a Giant Defy 2. I've ridden about 3,000km on my old hybrid this year so this is a huge step up for me.

We just finished changing one of our basement rooms into a home gym. I'm so excited to use it! The pics attached show it is still a little messy but totally accessible. What is you favorite piece of equipment - the one that you couldn't live without? For all of you post- op folk how long was it before you felt truly comfortable working out?

I had success with HIIT as part of the Body for Life program when I was in grad school. I just recently started doing HIIT again to boost my fat loss (and I would prefer a short 20 minute intense workout over an hour long moderate workout any day). Here's my program on the elliptical: 3 minutes warm up 1 minute high speed 2 minute medium speed Repeat 3 minute cycle 4 times (total of 15 minutes) Cool down 2 minutes. My heart rate gets as high as 170 and in the 140s during my medium speed. I love doing this. So what program are you guys doing and have had success with?

The second photo shows a lady who has 10 lbs of difference between the photo on the left and right. She weighs less in the photo on the left, but looks much more fit and in shape in the photo on the right. The lady shown in the grocery store is holding a model representing 5 lbs of fat. The last photo illustrates the difference between fat and muscle mass. Helps put a few things in perspective.

I was in a bad car wreck 7 weeks ago today. I broke one ankle and sprained the other. The orthopedic dr. cleared me to go back to title boxing today but I'm nervous. It's such an intense workout with lots of running, lunges, squats and more. Both ankles are still a little sore. I will try to ease into it and hope I don't reinjure it. Wish me luck!

Saw this posted on the forums on myfitness pal.... had to share. I want to preface this with the fact that I did not write this, I am however the Fat Girl and this blog made me tear up, because it hit home! (This is a blog entry from flintland.blogspot.com) Hey, Fat Girl. Yes, you. The one feigning to not see me when we cross paths on the running track. The one not even wearing sports gear, breathing heavy. You’re slow, you breathe hard and your efforts at moving forward make you cringe. You cling shyly to the furthest corridor, sometimes making larger loops on the gravel ring by the track just so you’re not on it. You sweat so much that your hair is all we…

I am 4 weeks post op. Have been walking and doing the elliptical at no resistance. When I ask my Doctor's office what other types of exercise I can do the only answer I get is "4-6 weeks" for exercise. It's been 4 weeks. I want a straight answer on what and when. I've seen people in the forums jogging at 2 weeks and others say no core work for 8 weeks. What was your dr's advice?

Exercise may actually suppress your appetite, two new studies suggest Getty Images stock Exercise actually decreases your appetite, so the urge to snack after a workout may be all in your head, experts suggest. By Lindsey Emery, pancakes, or maybe even a burger and fries. What they don’t want? To not eat anything. And yet, a few recent studies found that moderate intensity aerobic training could actually decrease your appetite or increase your feelings of fullness or satiety. Strange, right? Previous research has shown that people who exercise often reward themselves with food, increasing overall calorie consumption, and often sabotaging their weight l…

Hello, I am in a good place with having to change my diet, but I have to work on changing the lifestyle. I had just finished physical therapy with my second knee replacement when I decided to re-start banded living. I weigh 310 (5' 5"). This is WAY too much weight to be placing on prosthetic knees, that's just part of why I decided to try the life again. I tried to exercise at the gym, but found it way too difficult and painful. I can't walk for a very long distance without my knees hurting and I'm out of breath. I'm not supposed to use a treadmill, but they'd like me to walk. I want to say I can't, but I think I should be trying. I am mortified of people "seeing"…
